The Wayne High Chapter was established in 1946. This organization's purpose is to promote scholarship, service, character and leadership. The members are selected from the junior and senior classes with one-third of each class eligible. Only five per cent oi the juniors and fifteen per cent of the seniors may be elected. - These students are not only honored as being members of the local chapter but as a part of 2300 chapters established throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and the Philippines. A large percentage of colleges and univer- sities recognize members ot this organization on their campuses. The oiticers of Wayne Highs Honor Society for this year are: President, Alice Benthackg Vice President, Bob Carhartp and Secretary-Treasurer, Bonnie Sorensen. Bam! Vocal music has beena part of Wayne High School since the present building was constructed, but it was not until l927 that instrumental music was introduced under the direction of Professor Reed. That same year the high school band was merged with the city band, discontinuing instrumental music in the high school until 1933. The band is now under the direction of Mr. A. I. tPatl Atkins. The Wayne High Band is composed of 62 members. lt meets Monday. Wednesday, and Friday mornings. During the summer months of June, Iuly and August the band presents a concert every Friday evening. The various public performances this year have been: State Fair, College Homecoming, County Fair, the I-lallowesta at Norfolk, Window unveiling of the business store Windows twice a year, convocation at the college, and marching the afternoon the Hollywood Movie Stars arrived in Wayne. One of the highlights of the year is the District Music Contest which is held at Wayne. The band plays a very importantlpart in this event. A number of small instrumental groups and soloists also participate in the contest. This year another added feature was the Band Clinic which was held here. Many of the surrounding towns took part in this event. The high school students practiced under Mr. Rice, the guest conducter, while grade students were instructed by attending band leaders. ln the evening a concert was given by both groups at the City Auditorium. -30-
