' .................. 4 ' ................... 4 ' ................ 4 Class Hlstory In September of 1939 one of the great e ents IH rustor took place' Tne present Sen1or Class started to school FIVE of us Vlulard lVlcConnaugrle, Clara Jean Butcher Snerdle D1xon Jerr Dunn and Joan Herron started our educatlon at Wal ne Mrs Lovett was our fxrst and second grade teacner Under her we lear ed our A B C s and how to s1t next to one another wlthout too much trouole Of course there was the usual amount of p1gta1l pulllng and tattletalelrg In the thlrd and fourth we learned not only our multlplxcatxon tables but also how to alm the well known splt ball W1llard 1VlcConnaugne moved away mn the thxrd grade Mrs Florence Lust was our teacher In the flfth and slxth grades under Mrs K1ng we gamed three members of our present class They were I-Iarrlett Penwell from Gree fleld ln the flfth Dalsy Walker and Paullne KD1Sl6y ln the sxxth Daullne sta,ed a few months and then moved to Columbus When we got to the seventh grade we were sad chlefly because we could have no more recesses Howe ver we soon forgot thls when we could orgamze our own Jumor H1gn basketball team Ruth Ann Jenklns and David The exghth grade gave us a few anx1ous moments wnen the elgntn grade test appeared on the horlzon However we passed thls wlth flylng colors and were promoted to the Freshman Class Now we were b1g shots' We moved to the study hall we never could flgure out how xt got that name and settled down to stay a whlle We were 1ncluded 1n the hlgh school partles sports and other act1vxt1es Paullne Dalsy and Willard moved oack ln the Freshman year and Sherdle moved to Washmgton The Sophomore year found us a l1ttle brxghter for all of the hlgn scnool faculty efforts We ordered our class rxngs 1n Octob r and recexved them the followmg Aprll Our .Tumor year was one of our b1g years We elected our class offxcers whlch were Ruth Ann Jenklns presldent Clara Jean Butcher vxce presldent Harrxett Penwell secretary and V1rg1l Wallace treasurer We selected our class flower the carnatzon our colors rose and wh1te and Where There's A Wlll There's A Way for our motto We sold ads for the annual nad a supper before the Sen1or Class Play sold at the basketball games etc to make money for the Junlor Semor Banquet The banquet was held at the Country Club We started our Semor year off w1th b1g plans We elected class off1cers with Joan Herron as presxdent Wlllard McConnaughey v1ce president Daisy Walker secretary treasurer 10 C , , , V, L . , . . . Prophecy After a course ln teachmg at Asbury College ln Wllmore Kentucky I declded to take a tour of the states before assum1ng my duty as a teacher S1nce I had not seen my classmates for many years I thought I would V1Slt them whxle on my tour I had heard that one of my classmates was 1n Calxforma So I made that my fxrst stop Upon arrxvrng at Cahforma I saw a sxgn wh1ch read Butch's Beauty Shop Knowlng that was a mckname of one of my old classmates I dropped 1n to see zf xt was she My nunch turned out to be rlght as It was owned and operated by Clara Jean Butcher She gave me a swell permanent and after a mce v1s1t and a short rest wmth Clara Jeanl was on my way once more My next stop was to be San Franclsco where Clara Jean told me that Paullne Kmsley was statxoned as a WAVE camp Upon arrxval at the camp I saw a recrultxng offlcer comxng down the hall To my surpr1se the offlcer turned out to be my old classmate Paulme Whlle talklng wlth Pauhne I learned that Joan Herron was under her super v1s1on Paulxne told me that Joan was on K P duty Paulxne told me where to fmd Joan so I went to look her up Joan was peellng potatoes You could hardly see .Ioan there were many potatoes There were potatoes of all smzes shapes and colors Joan saxd that she was enJoy1ng her work as a cook very much After a meal of potatoes with Joan I was on my way once more My next stop was to be Oregon Upon arr1v1ng at Oregon I found a nxce hotel 1h whlch to spend the mght As I went up to the desk clerk to ask for a room I was very much surprxsed to see my old classmate Dalsy Walker After Daisy graduated from school she marrled a very wealthy man from 17 After landing my plane in San Francisco, I made my way to the WAVES' ' . so Oregon Daxsy and her husband moved to Oregon and bought one of the best hotels 1n the land Dalsy gave me a very mce room and after spendmg the mght w1th her I was ready to leave Oregon After leav1ng the state of Oregon I drove out 1nto the country to see some of Oregon s land After I had gone a few mlles I became th1rsty so I stopped to get a drmk I was very much surprlsed when my old classmate Ruth Ann Jenklns came to the door After graduatmg from school Ruth Ann dec1ded to leave Good Hope and go to Oregon where she would settle down as a hOUSeW1f6 Ruth Ann showed me her farm and her hvestock enjoyed my V1S1t wxth her very much I left Ruth Ann s and came back to Good Hope where I met one of my old classmates Darrell Henry ln the Red and Whzte Food Store Darrell moved to Xema after graduating from school and settled down as a p1tcher for Xen1a's baseball team Darrell told me that he had Just been to v1s1t the boys and th1s IS the report that he gave me As I had been away from home for twenty years I thought that I would start home and on my way v1s1t the class of 19:1 My f1rst stop was to be Jerry Dunn s Jerry marrxed shortly after graduat1ng from school He now owns one of the largest farms 1n Fayette County Jerry doesn't have to h1re any farm hands as he has plenty help of h1s own w1th hxs s1x boys and two glrls As I left Jerry s and was gomg toward Good Hope I saw an old man who was headed toward hatf1eld's I thought I recogn1zed the fxgure sol stopped to let mm r1de It turned out to be my old school chum Wxllard McConnaughey Wlllard has been trymg to flnd a Job ever sxnce he graduated from school 18 , . . . , . As I was dr1v1ng through Good Hope and heard the church bells rmgmg I thought I would go to church there I was very much surprxsed when walked mto the church and the preacher was Reverend D1xon After gradu atxng from school Sherdxe went to Ohlo Umvers1ty to study for the rn1n1stry After church was over I went down to the front to have a talk wlth Sherd1e and I was very much surprlsed to see my old classmates Dav1d DeW ees along Wltb hls wlfe and twelve chlldren slttlng on the front row We Started tallung and Davxd told me that he had a Job rnakxng a salary of S350 O0 week as a spec1a11st1n Chemistry I thlnk he needs to earn S350 O0 a week as he saxd h1s motto xs Cheaper By The Dozen We w1ll now return to our work happy to have seen the class of 1951 Wrltten by Harrxett Penwell Darrell Henry 19 .
