A tribute such as your theme is rarely paid to our colorful Orient. XY'ith the write-ups, so skillfully and ably composed by the hardworking literary staff, we find as much enjoyment in reading this book as we would in reading a much publicized classic. How wonderful the layouts are and hovv authentic the lettering? XVithout the contribution of the talented art staff, your yearbook might never have become the masterpiece it is today. XY'e can almost visualize the photography staff collecting a multitude of pic- tures - serious and humorous. No professional could have employed more imagination. XY'e realize that the yearbook could not have existed without the business-circulation staff. Every production needs an able managment. In this respect your yearbook appears to be unique. To Mr. Schaffer, the Etzgfcir faith- ful advisor, and to the Editor. Gayle Eaton, we express our heart-felt ap- preciation. Congratulations, Seniors, you have a wonderful book to cherish throughout the coming years. XY'e sincerely thank you for giving us the starring role in this. the 59 Erzgfe. She graduated in 1934 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Syracuse University where she was a member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, an elected member of Pi Mu Epsilon, Mathematics Honoraryg Sigma Pi Sigma, National Physics Honorary, and a member of the Womens Athletic Association Board. In 1943 she received her Master of Science Degree, also from Syracuse University. Previous to teaching in Wayne Central, she taught at Lyrrcourt School in Syracuse, and Cortland High School in Cortland, New York. Since 1950 she has taught math and science here at Wayne Central, opening many ears to the great task of learning. Both she and her husband, Mr. Rexford Ransley, are active members of the First Baptist Church of Ontario. With skiing as one of their main interests, Mr. and Mrs. Ransley spend as much free time as possible in Vermont and the Adirondack Mountains. They both lHce an- tiques and have chosen many fine examples of early Americana for their home, which is one of the older houses in the community. Much of their spare time has been spent in restoring the Ransley homestead to its original beauty. They also share an avid in- terest in the legitimate theater. And Mrs. Ransley still finds time to sew. This year she is an advisor to the Junior class and the advisor of the Mathematics Club which was newly organized this year. BOARD OF EDUCATION Rau' One: Mrs. Lucille Twitchell Mrs Emily Nf' Huntley, Mrs. Ruth Connolly R011 Tuo Mr Charles Hack, Mr. Robert Harris Mr james Bene igx way, Mr. Daniel Tomlinson, Mr Roy Welker Dear Seniors: The search for knowledge is a challenge which continues throughout our lives. You as seniors, your parents as allies, your faculty as leaders, and we of the Board of Education have met the challenge to this time, As seniors you are to be congratulated on your achievement. Years of school and hours of study have brought you to this time of recognition. Let this be a time of joy, but let us remember that having reached this plateau you must move onward and upward, whether in a career, in the military service or in continued formal education.. Your foundation of knowledge is firmg build well upon it. As parents, faculty and Board of Education let us rejoice in this time of attainment, catch our breath, and charge ourselves with continued effort to provide the best in educational opportunity for all. SUIUERVISING PRINCIPAL THOMAS C. ARMSTRONG Dear Seniors, The value of an education has often been emphasized during your years of study in school. It is one asset which cannot be taken from you. Its real value will become more apparent as the years go by. Too frequently we have overstressed the monetary value of an educa- tion, and have failed to stress some of those things which money cannot purchase. Your education should mold you into being a more tolerant individual as far as race. color, and religion are concerned. lt should also make you more cognizant and appreciative of many of our American heritages such as freedom of speech. religion. travel, voting, ownership. etc. You should help to guard these priceless heritages that they might not be gradually taken from you. XY'hen you become eligible, be sure to exercise your privilege of voting. Only in a democracy can freedom be pre- served. Best wishes for an enjoyable and fruitful life. Sincerely, THOMAS C. MILDRED MC NEIL Each day our complex society seems to demand more from each of us, Especially is this true in the field of education. A few years ago, an eighth grade diploma would lead to success but now, gra- uation from high school is the minimum qualification for many careers. Some, of course, demand higher education. As the future comes along, this upgrading of training will be more necessary. W'hether we admit it or not, each of us has an obligation to our fellow men to make the most of our talents. Assumption of this responsibility is vital for the American future. Whether you become a scientist. teacher, doctor, carpenter, or anything honorable, be a good one. Once you have really en- joyed the thrill of a job well done, youre on your way. Sincerely, 'I2 Parker N. Bridges MISS SHIRLEY ALEXANDER Phyxical Education 17-5 MR. Both the students and faculty can exchange pieces of conversation whether it be serious or just a friendly hello with the secretaries who listen intently to anyone who happens to be in the office. Secretaries may be associated with clerks since we can buy paper, pencils, pens and any other small but necessary articles. Many times teachers have to call the office for lost pupils, and the secretaries do their best to recover them. The secretaries also help new students to adjust to our school. Perhaps we may not thank these two people personally every time we go into the office, but we do appreciate everything Mrs. Beach and Mrs. Massielye do for us. STUDENT COUNCILS JR. HIGH Heading the students' government in most United States schools is the Student Council. In Oriental countries the student government is run much differently. Let us compare these two for just a moment. In the Orient, there is not much student participation. The students do not vote for the officersg they are merely handed down, so to speak, from year to year. Here in the United States, the student government is run almost entirely by the students themstlves by means of the secret ballot. This year we were fortunate to have had Danny Cass as President: Kenny Stevens as Vice-President: Kathy Herbst as Secretaryg and Kenny Hend- erson as Treasurer. Doing a very capable iob of advising this group was Mr. Parker Bridges. The council took over the roller skating parties to ap- propriate money for the bleacher fund. As honorable little brothers and sisters to the Senior High Student Council is the junior High Student Council. Elected as officers for the year were Bonnie Taber, President: Richard Billings, Vice-President: Sharon Fisher, Secretaryg and Ronald Fillmore, Treasurer. Two of its permanent accomplishments were to make posters for the Ontario Com- munity Red Cross Drive and to collect toys to be repaired in the Industrial Arts Class and distributed by the On- tario Youth Council. Vandewinclcel, S. Richmond. When they are little, most girls, whether from the Orient or elsewhere, want to be nurses. They want to cure the sick- ness and soothe the troubled minds of the ill as best they can. For the past few years the girls in our school have been given the chance to do just what they have always wanted to do. This year the girls have worked in the nurse's office and have helped in the clinics to gain some experience. With the advice of Mrs. Brewer, the girls have carried on the work of S.H.C., which has been one of the most active groups at W.C.S. for many years. Developing their agricultural abilities while participating in the functions of the Future Farmers of America, our Vifayne farmers have formed an organization of which they can be proud. Farm- ing, the oldest occupation of man, requires that the Chinese teenagers spend their days from sun-up to sun-down, wading through rice fields in order to produce meager meals for their families. ln the fields of XY'ayne County one might discern a present FFA. memher riding on a shiny new tractor while plow' ing up to eight acres a day. Much in contrast to the meals of Indo-China. the result of our boys' toil will he some of the scrumptious meals that we eat almost every day. Good sportsmanship. as shown on November l0th dur, ing the Donlcev Basketball game, is also practiced by our boys. Seventy-eight dollars was won at the Palmyra Fair, one of the great events of the vear. At the Rochester Fruit Show, the boys scored the hivhest in the disease and identification con- tests. This is truly a good rec- ord boys. Carol Keymel Nl THEMATICS CLUB Ron One: W. Rowell, W. Knapp, B. Spence, D. Bauer, R. Billings, B. Schum, C. Schillaci, P. Ficarro, Mr. Faulks. Ruiz Tito: H. The goal de- cided upon was: to increase the enioyment and under- standing of Mathematics. The members' knowledge of math grew, they might even have tried to count on a Japanese abacus. Since the people in the Orient do not have such a variety of food as we do. they do not have the need for such a club as our Fu- ture Homemakers of Am- erica. The members of this club prepare many of our common dishes and most likely would be capable of cooking a japanese dish such as curry and rice. The organization pro- motes the skills and tech- niques that may be ap- plied at home now and for their family in the fu- ture. The club members and officers for the year were Mary Whittleton, Presi- dentg Ernestine Bel, Vice- Presidentg Carol Tusche, Secretaryg and Bonnie Pembroke, Treasurerg and Mrs. Beth Colburn, ad- visor. PARKER BRIDGES Chinese stick ball, although similar to our game of golf, cannot be entirely compared with our Wayne Central golf team. It might be very amusing to see how our golf players would play such a game. In their first year on an or- ganized basis, the golf team had four interscholastic matches with Newark and Sodus, XVayne's team won two and placed second in the others. In the sectionals, held at Coming Country Club on Septem- ber 2', James Bridges was one of four Wfayne County representatives. Dan Daily was elected Captain and Mr. Parker Bridges was the advisor. It is expected that the spring of 1959 will see an extended sched- ule of matches when several other schools enter teams. Geraldine Denno r 3? . At last the boys were ready to tie their opponents into knots. With the sole purpose of building character and developing friendly relationship with other schools, the wrestling league is constantly growing. For this year our team chose Richard Wacenske and Willard Rowell as their captains. With Mr Gentile as their coach the boys participated in Central Western Conference Running round the school building the Track team rn their practice uniforms have become a common si ht to all of us The 1958 track team elected as their captains Jim Pate and Eddie Adams With the help of this years freshmen who made up the malorrty of the team the 1959 season was expected to be quite bright Our track team strived to participate like champions and doing so to regain the Wayne County Championship Jim represented Wayne County in the 1958 section five track and field meet Winning the ABCD Championship and the section als was the aim of the l958 baseball team They had a good season for 1958 but the team expected a better one for 1959 Coach Gentile hoped that 1959 would find our team strong and willing With the best of defenses and pitching units in the county the coachs only problem was the teams weakness at bat As participants in a nationally popular sport our 1959 baseball team with captains Harley Geil and Dennis Tallie has done a good job of which wc ought to be very proud Also working hard guarding the bases and scoring the runs for good old Wayne Central were the boys on the JV baseball team Its members played hard ever feeling the strong and persistent urge to play on Varsity While the boys were competing against other schools for honors and trophies stiff competition prevailed among the high school girls rntramutals was the center of girls gymnastics throughout the year Even though soccer the introductory sport was not as well attended as some of the other sports the girls who participated had fun while learning the ways and means of the game This year the senior team with a record of three wins and one ne came out on top Immediately following the score the girls under Miss eagerly began bouncing basketballs baskets were scored Competition the announcement of Alexanders direction One after another the rose high as sports sailing into the far outfield of the boys baseball dia monds the girls swinging their softball bats were taking their bases in tride While expessing an ardent spirit in this national sport the girls gained experience and simul taneously brought the 58 59 intramural season to a close To develop skills to practice sportsmanship and to win games that was the aim of the 1958 soccer team and follow it they did Placing second in the ABC league enabled them to ne for first place in the Section V finals Better than anyone else Coach Gentile really knows how hard the boys worked and how much spirit they pos sessed Proving themselves to be a winning team they were truly a TOP team the boys scored a record of eleven wins and three defeats Behind the Varsity stood the Junior Varsity eager to learn and willing to try The JV team hope to play rn and mn the secnonals in the near future This years JV record of five wins three losses and one tie is not a record to scorn Todays JV team will be tomorrows Varsity and will carry on their shoulders the honor of Wayne Central Under their captains Harley Geil and Dennis Taillie the soccer team played their best against some mighty stiff competition The team really appreciated the spirit that the students showed In commemoration of a grand year for soccer we do humbly offer at all costs our voices -l 1 - and our hearts for the purpose of backing next years Varsity and JV teams The result of the sectionals in soccer had barely be came official before the basketballs emerged under Coach Zonnevylles watchful eye A new team was formed partly veterans and partly novices but a good team it was We looked forward to a victorious season Co captains Harley Geil and Dennis Taillie led the other members toward the sectionals and the high scorer championship of the county From a large group of freshmen and sophomores the JV Basketball team containing the hopes of the future was picked by Coach Sones who worked hand and hand with Coach Zonnevylle With the knowledge that the future success of the Varsity will rest on their shoulders the JV team as a whole worked hard to de velop the basketball skills They were out to establish a new record in JV basketball for 19581959 to top the four wins twelve losses of the 1957 1958 team In front of the school but strongly behind the team stand the cheerleaders dressed in the traditional blue and gold A large group of talented girls tried out for these extremely important squads and rt was only after a truly hard decision that Miss Alexander wisely chose the mem bers of the JV and the Varsity Cheerleading squads Under the able leadership of Captain Sharon Bolton the squad members worked on the cheers that would be used throughout the year to cheer the teams on and show them that the school was behind them Dorothy Mmnamon captain of the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders did a marve lous yob in getting her squad ready for the first pep as are in their fir t year of cheerleading Great hopes have been expressed for their future success In the fall of 1956 several girls were chosen from their respective classes to yom Leaders Club Under the guidance of Miss Shirley Alexander they were provided with a knowledge of girls athletics After two successful years they have improved the interest in leadership sportsmanship and athletics within the school The girls receive points for each sports activity in which they par ucrpated After they have accumulated the required amount they receive an award After choosing President Joyce Miller Vice President Beverly Miller Secretary Treasurer Carol Keytnel and General Chairman Mary Stigel, the girls made plans for a soccer sports day in which girls from neighboring schools competed When this was over the girls looked forward to officiating during rntramurals and keeping in the gym classes The news of games and sports travel much faster than do the records of history From the Orient we in herited such an intellectual game as Chess Chess is widely played in our country today and is enyoyed by many Since it origimated rn the Orient one might suspect that it would be the most popular game there but this is not true When todays Oriental youths have a moment of free time one can find more of them playing baseball than any other game Fsther Hilton and Carol Keymel . , . To many it is a book that cap- tures the reality of Wayne Central in pictures and write- ups to cherish for the rest of their lives - to me it is that plus an excellent example of the full co-operation which we have received from the student body, the ad- ministration, and the faculty this year. The 1959 Eagle staff has co-operated to the fullest extent to produce this yearbook for you. The many hours of work and planning can not be imagined until one has worked on the yearbook staff. This work was carried on not only during yearbook meetings, but also after and be- fore school hours and occasionally on Saturdays. As any yearbook member could tell you, one can spend any amount of time on the yearbook and still do more. There is no limit for success if there is a staff such as I have had this year - one that is willing to give up much time to the cause of producing a beautiful and outstanding annual. For many on the staff, working on the yearbook has been one of their first big responsibilities, for others it was a test of presenting their talents to the very best of their abilities. This book has been a big challenge to us all, but we have had fun, gained new and lasting freindships, accepted re- NORMAN SCHAFFER Adviwr Gayle Eaton, Editor-in-Chief Joyce Foley, Co-Editor sponsibilities, and received experience that will be bene- ficial to us forever. Most of all we have received satis- faction. The sincere and never ending advice given to us by our advisor, Mr.. Norman Shaffer, has been a great help to every yearbook member, I'm sure. At times the road ahead seemed to be one that was impassible, but, through careful planning and a sincere interest in our goal we achieved a fine 1959 Eagle for Wayne Central and our community. At this time, we, the yearbook staff, would like to express our deepest gratitude to you, the student body, the faculty, and the administration, for the lasting co-oper- ation given us in helping to make this annual possible. The complete success of this book was achieved through the constant dedication given to you by the 1959 Eagle staff. They have sacrificed much time and many activities in order to make this book possible. Accomplishing our interpretation of the Orient as played by Wayne Central would not have been possible for the 1959 staff without the excellent leadership given to us by Donna Henderson and the staff from last year. The 1959 Eagle staff hopes that they have helped the 1960 staff with Joyce Foley as Editor to make their job easier next year. Producing a fine yearbook for you - the stu- dent body, the faculty, and the administration, is their goal as it was ours.
