There's a wonderful picture playing--a Wayne Central pro- ,,f' f duction-- The Best Years ofOur Lives , starring my own Class of '53 f' .. .Directed by Nolan Powell and Mary Cheatham, it should be good! . . .Come in and wait with us until it beginsg it'll be starting soon. Ah. . .finallyl Hey, who is that riotous bunch of youngsters. . .it can't be. . .yes, it is.. .it's my class on the first day ofour high school sojourn, all togetherin the study hall justlike one big, happy family, with Mrs. Cohen the mama and Mr. Powell the papa of the brood . . .Quite a spirited and ambitious -looking group, huh? We wanted spirited leadership too, so we elected Rose Catalano as our president, Jim Schultz was our vice-president, Betty Lou Cone started recording the minutes, and Barry Blake set our treasury rolling. . .New York was our goal from the start and we started preparing for it, industriously earning money. Although we were the babies of the high school, we had big ideas, and plenty of drive and ambition with which to back them up.. .We discovered that nine hours of sleep were not necessary. September, 1950--Most of us were united again in the studry hall, this time as Sophomores. . .We began making a name for ourselves in WCS: we boasted the presence of many of our classmates in the sports light , in band, chorus , and other activities. . .Barry Blake copped the spotlight as president and Dick Blankenburg as vice-president. Shirley Bailey kept an eye on the class notebook and Mary Jane Lomondo took care of our growing treasury. . .Mr. Powell and Mrs. Childs had quitea job controlling us. . .Our deviltry may have got us into trouble, but our ambition and friend- liness set our pace. . .We discovered that eight hours of sleep were not necessaly. September 1951--Our Junior year found us in divided homerooms but still united in spirit. . .Miss Cheatham be- came our new mama . . ,Eddie Tobin was chosen to lead us, and lead us he did, with the aid of Joyce Wilcox as vice-presidentg Phyllis Masclay, as secretaryg and Betty Lou Cone, as treasurer. . .Yes, we were booming with ac- tivity that year. . .Remember our first enterprise' -the Cole Circus? After that came the Leap Year Hop, most successful dance ever held in Wayne Central territories. And how you laughed at our Junior play, Faith, Hope, and Flarity l . . .Topping the year off just right--our beautiful Lilac Ball ! It may not have been such a financial success, but it was definitely a great social success. . .We discovered that seven hours cisleep were not necessary. September 1952--our last year. What is that?. . .No, it isn't a wild party.. .No, it's not a riot. . .It's just one of our Senior class meetings. Again, Barry was elected president, and Phyllis was at his sidef as usualj in the office of vice-president. Helen was kept busy with all the incoming and outgoing money, and Mary ,lane kept up the minutes and correspondence. . .We put our all into our last class enterprises, reaping huge profits. The annual magazine sale netted us a profit of over SIOOO. Our dances augmented the fund.. .Actors and actresses in the class made a smashing hit in Meet Me In St. Louis . .. And then, the big day arrived! Off we were to the big city on a trip that we'l1 for- ever remember. . .What a time we did have! . . .We discovered that we could get along-without any sleep-. The finale--graduation... Rather sad to see everyone bidding each other farewell after so many years together.. . Yes, they really were the Best Years Of Our Lives . . .At the end, Wayne Central gladly foh, I mean, reluctantlyj closes its door after the one and only Class of '53, The show is over and there will never be another one like it We're glad you came along.. .hope you enjoyed it. 10
