But there is more to life than school, and after 2:40, the possibilities are endless. Some students jump in their Cars and drive to Work. Others wait for the last bell on Friday, anticipating another roaring weekend in Wayland. All of us long for the Summer, when we are able to relax for the first time in ten long months. The typical Wayland student leads a very hectic life; as we rush off to all our ac- tivities, we sometimes forget to . . . CELEBRATE THE MOMENT. ■ Summer ' s Pleasures ...they are gone like to visions every one And the cloudy days of autumn and winter cometh on I tried to call them back but unbidden they are gone Far away from heart and eye... -John Clare, ' Remembrances ' Everyone agrees that two and a half months is not enough time to recuperate from the stressful school year, catch up on sleep, acquire a tan, maintain a gruel- ing summer job, go on those family va- cations, and have fun; yet this summer WHS students did their best! Summer ' 88 brought the Red Sox winning streak, early stages of Election ' 88, the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit? , Car- away ' s delicatessen, and Domino ' s Pizza in Wayland. WHS students jour- neyed as far as Europe, the Caribbean, New Hampshire, Cape Cod, or as close as Great Woods and the town beach. De- spite the usual groaning that the summer was too boring, too hot, or too tiring, when September and fall preseason rolled around, everyone realized how great it had actually been! ■ The sophomore troupe: Lauren Rossman, Laura DeVoe, Katie Basch, and Naomi Greyser pose for future posterity. What do sophomores do during the summer? Apparently Rinda Wardle decides that while she ' s partying at Betsy Bennett ' s house, she ' ll grow flowers on her head. Take me out to the ball game! Karen Potochney, Laura Sunderland, and Rebecca Black watch the Red Sox continue their winning streak at Fenway Park. 6 The Catch of the Day! Seniors Pamela Cokin, Mara Shapshay, Jen Smith, Karen Schofield, Julie Moyer, Anna Rutherford, and Amy Pond enjoy an afternoon at Singing Beach. Juniors Rebecca Spoerl, Alex Meek, Liz McCullough and Darcy Conant won ' t be smiling after they ride the roller coaster at Riverside. Seniors Jen Thompson Breed and Ann Marie Allara are getting ready for the harvest season at Drumlin Farm. Sophomores David Montague, Matt Arnold, and Victor Chang: what ' s wrong with this picture? Seniors Brian Emo McMullen and Eric Shaw display their lobster legs while vacationing in Florida. I i Weekends Wayland in The Weekend: 2:40 Friday to 12:00 Sun- day. What would we do without it? After a week of homework, papers and killer calculus exams, the only thing students want to do is relax and enjoy themselves. During this time, people do everything possible from sleeping until noon to par- tying all night. Telephones ring off the 100k, and friends ask What ' s going ight? Most people spend the we going to the movies, hanging arou Christy ' s, or driving all over tow searching for something exciting to do. Without the weekend, Wayland students would probably all go insane! ■ Christy nirlil II nlin. Deb Seniors Ann Kml«i « i i . . i- •• i I hiii (itay their weekends shopping for sun celebrate Kami ' Birthday on those Ivy icense to Drive Cars. Call it materialistic, call it spoiled, call it whatever you want, but the fact re- mains that most juniors and seniors at Wayland High School have cars. Some students are given cars by their parents, while others must buy them themselves. The school parking lot holds everything from 1989 Saabs to mint green ' 57 Chevys. Although the big craze this year seemed to be Jeep Cherokees, Senior Karen Schofield loves her Caravan: My family truckster ' s awesome. I can squeeze fourteen people in it at once. Yet not everyone has a car all the time. Around the license plate of Junior Brad Pope ' s Toyota it reads: Brad ' s Truck... Sometimes. ■ sior David Wilkinson drives his Honda ;cooter to school everyday, whether in now. You only have to our permit to drive a scooter. ■ miles from the iw of his car. ash for Cash Why do people sacrifice their social life to earn that extra buck? Senior Lorian Kiesel, a salesperson at the watch counter at Lechmere, admits that she does not really like her job; she just does it for the money. Whether it is babysitting, raking leaves, shoveling snow, or flipping bur- gers at McDonald ' s, students from all bur classes can always use some extra Some of us have to buy our own hes, pay for car insura nce, buy gas, nd put some money aside for college. Senior Anne Bryant displays the shoes she bought while on the French exchange. Tie-dyed shirts were extremely popular, whether they were home-made or bought at the store. These are the days to hold on ' cause we won ' t although we ' ll want to. This is the time... ■ Mr. Harris took over the job of class advisor at the beginning of sophomore year. The first major event that he organized, the Sophomore Senior brunch, was so successful, teachers commented that it was the best they had ever attended. The two class ski trips and the Junior Prom were just as spectacular. For the first time in four years, the senior class sponsored a Back to School dance, which was thoroughly enjoyed by students from all classes. Its tremendous success was the beginning of an exciting senior year. While acting as assistant coach for the varsity football team, Mr. Harris was also able to oversee the senior concession stand which was profitable at every game. His innovative ideas have allowed the Class of 1989 to turn normal class functions into creative events. All in all, Mr. Harris has added a new dimension to our class, and for that, we are all thankful. ■ 22 It threatened to rain on Saturday, May 21 , 1988, the night of the Junior Prom. However, by the time the limousines arrived at John Boyajian ' s pre-prom party, the skies had cleared. Approximately one hundred and twenty couples appeared at the Royal Plaza in Marlboro to enjoy a night of dancing to the theme of .. .Somebody to Stand by my Side, with music played by the band Vienna. After the usual dinner of chicken, couples began filling the dance floor, and for the next four hours, everybody had the time of their lives. The evening ' s success was due to the excellent planning of chairpersons Carrie Clif- ford and Kristin DeVoe. They, with help from the Prom Committee, parents, and WHSPO made the 1988 Junior Prom a night to remember. ■ Dwight Blaha and Anne Bryant, Doug Ball and Michelle Montague, Liz Salomon and Ken Holmstrom, and Karen Schofield and Ted Ball gather at the Montague ' s pre-prom party. The Three Stooges: Wilson Pilette, Jeff Adams and Mike Bonner. Eric McCallig and Yana Markov, surrounded by springtime foliage, pose for a picture. 24 Matthew Lincoln Alford John Angier WhatALongStrangeTripItsBeenAGRDA HEMOJCAMESDGyouwangpissw Mitch wherethefckdidtheygrowyou Goenlatenightat RogdhouseemanyBs SodasW Boysgoodtimes put-tingonthegoglesGrossyouranAnimal Fall86PromW KGLAX 25SkiWV WeDont NeedNoThoushtContvoleSB143ThanxM D K TColoradoBound later! This is a glowing statistic, but it doesn ' t say anything about the hours of agony seniors suffered dur- ing the whole College Experience . ■ March-April 1988: W Attend those Wednesday College Decision-Making Workshops given by Guidance, u Buy various Barron ' s SAT practice books, and enroll in a SAT prep course to boost those scores. ■ May 1988: Collapse after the grueling three-hour SAT exam and decide whether the $500 dollar prep course was actually worth it. ■ June 1988: Take three Achievement Tests of your choice. ■ July-August 1988: Travel to every conceivable college, and pray that your parents don ' t embarrass you while on the campus tour by asking about co-ed bath- rooms or alcohol consumption. ■ August 1988: i Faint when you read the essay question to First Choice University. ■ September 1988: Hope that the grow- ing pile of applications will magically dis- appear. ■ October 1988: Attempt to make an appointment with your guidance coun- selor, and find that he she is completely booked until December. Write a rough draft of The Essay to First Choice Uni- versity, only to have it destroyed by the teacher to whom you show it. I Rewrite The Essay, Rewrite The Essay again, Fill out the mindless Basic Information Form to First Choice University (why do they need to know where your parents were born?). Midnight, October 31st. Have parent edit essay, Type essay; only to find that the correction ribbon has run out. Find more correction ribbon and finish application, u Have parent write a check for application fee. ■ November 1, 1988: Mail application to First Choice University, and laugh at those who have November 15th Early Decision deadline. ■ December 15, 1988: Cry when youi find that The Admissions Committee feels. ' it needs more time to fully consider youri candicacy. In other words, you ' ve been deferred. S Dec. 16: Congratulate (grudge ingly) those who were accepted early, and realize that you have fourteen days to complete five more applications. Dec. 27: Decide that you don ' t really want to go to college anyway. ■ January 1, 1989: 4:53 p.m.: Fly to post office to mail all applications with a Jan. 1st deadline. Jan. 15: Celebrate Closure! Jan. 16: Start filling out the FAF form. ■ February 1989: WAIT AND WORRY! 1 ■ March 1989: W WAIT AND WORRY! ■ April 1989: On or around the 15th: Laugh, cry, and swear after dashing home to check the mailbox. ■ May 1, 1989: i Inform First Choice Uni-i versity that you will be attending as a member of the Class of 1993. Belonging. Beginnings. The Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman classes all have unique characteristics which add to the diversity of Wayland High School. The individual enthusiasm and class spirit contribute to activities such as dances, fundraisers, ski trips, and class outings. Although the classes are usually judged as a whole, each stu- dent is an essential member with a var- iety of interests and activities which adds to WHS. This past year underclassmen learned to CELEBRATE PEOPLE !■ m Stress. Junior year-it is rumored to be the worst year of the high school experi- ence. SAT ' s, Achievements, and the general anxiety of maintaining a steady grade point average are usually major concerns for the tense junior. In addition to tremendous academic pressure, students place an incredible amount of emphasis on finding a date to the social event of the year... The Prom. Another highlight of Junior year is earning the re- vered driver ' s license, the first sign of freedom. The faculty not only teaches the three R ' s; they give their students a sense of discipline and perse- verance. Their willingness and dedica- tion to their profession adds to the spirit and success at WHS. Most teachers ' workday do not necessarily end at 2:40; some members of the faculty advise clubs or classes, coach sports, and have outside avocations. Although students groaned with homework assignments, exams, and papers, they learned to CELEBRATE EXPERIENCE !■ Isabel Bouin When I am gone, How glad I shall be If the light of my life Shall be burned out for thee. After thirty years at Way land High School, Isabel Bouin has a lot to celebrate. Boston born and bred, she attended Girls ' Latin School, Girls ' High School and Boston University where she majored in biology and minored in psychology. Plans for a career in medicine went right out the window after practice teaching at Newton High School. She then went on for a Master of Arts degree in secondary education, and was the only woman that year who planned to teach science. Dur- ing the 50 ' s and 60 ' s she took summer classes through the Na- tional Science Institute at BU, BC, Bowdoin, FSC, and Uni- versity of Hawaii. Her research encouraged her to examine the phenomenon of creation through the eyes of science and faith, and she wrote her thesis on Teaching Science in Relation to Religious Concepts. Miss Bo uin came to Wayland in 1958, and when she retires in 1991 she will have taught here 35 years, 19 of those as a department head. She pioneered new curricula such as the na- tionally acclaimed BSCS program, and she developed a lab program which had never existed before. She introduced the first AP courses in Biology and taught it until it became so popular that students were divided into three separate sections. Her most memorable experiences come from working with students. She will always remember the day her former dys- lexic student won the science fair for doing a case study on the disorder, and then received a standing ovation from the entire student body on senior awards day. She is proud that the sci- 98 ence department is remarkably stable, cohesive and profes- • sional — involved in student activities and dedicated to teach- 1 ing challenging high powered courses. Miss Bouin has also been invaluable to Wayland High I School as the advisor of the yearbook. She took over the posi-i tion in 1968 because she felt it was important to get to know students through extra-curricular activites. She remained for-i six years, stopped when she was appointed department head,i and resumed the role again in 1985. She will never forget thei late nights scrambling to meet deadlines or the inevitable pizza , parties which follow. One would never suspect that this former Ford Foundation Teacher of the Year was an avid modern dancer — a regular performer at every school occa-i sion at BU. Although she now enjoys writing, her first love is drawing and painting; she specializes in portraits, and would eventually like to try sculpture. She also cultures a wide var-i iety of African violets, collects and mounts seaweeds, and I breeds tropi cal fish. As a biology teacher, she feels that her credo is best I summed up by this quote ascribed to St. Francis: He knowthll best who loveth best all things great and small. She says thati I Loved or unloved, appreciated or not, I ' d like to be re-; membered as someone who cared, who gave the best possible and expected nothing less from students. Miss Bouin ' s con-i tributions have been appreciated and it is for this reason that) the 1989 Reflector is dedicated to her. ADMINISTRATION Dr. Sharon D. Dr. Roemer: Once I had a very rowdy sophomore English class in M67 in the Arts Building. During one class which was particularly out of control, a student climbed out of the window. Until he walked back into the room, I had not even noticed he had left. Mr. Auciello: While teaching at the Junior High School, I left an English class to go to use the bath- room. Mr. Kavaleski took my class and hid them somewhere. When I got back there was no class, and Mr. Kavaleski, who had come to do my teacher re- view, wanted to know where all the students were. Mr. McCoy: I taught an entire class with my fly down. Mr. Clark: I used to teach at a High School on Cape Cod. It was my first year teaching, I was younger then (and looked younger). I was sitting in the school cafeteria seventh period — my daily assignment. Suddenly a fight broke out — with fists and the whole bit. I grabbed the two students by their shoulders and began to pull them apart then a janitor intervened. He thought I was a third student joining in on the fight, and he sent me down to the vice-principal ' s office with the other two boys. Mr. Smith: I slammed the door to a classroom, and the clock fell off the wall. Mrs. Buffington: One time I had just finished giv- ing a lecture, and I meant to say: ' If the shoe fits, wear it. ' However, I scrambled the words together so it came out: ' If the foo sh-ts, wear it. If you have ever called the Superintendent ' s office, you have heard Mrs. Blades ' cordial greeting. She has been a sec- retary receptionist for sixteen years. Dotty, as she prefers to be called, was a teacher ' s aide at Claypit Hill School before manning the switchboard at the Super ' s office. She is the mother of two Wayland graduates, Rick and Debby. Penny Lazarian has been secretary to the Superintendent of Schools since 1983. She retires after 33 years of dedicated service to the Wayland school system. She was a secretary at the Junior High for many years, and secretary for two business adminis- trators, Art Wagman and Dave Connolly, before assuming her duties as Dr. Zimmerman ' s right hand. Knowing the myriad of tasks a secretary must perform, we join them in celebrating a job well done. Two members of the WHS staff also retired this year-Marcel Richer and Paul Heffernan. Mr. Richer has taught both Latin and French in a career spanning twenty-eight years at WHS. Mr. Richer was cited for his enthusiasm and his energy in the 1987 yearbook. He is a role model for anyone contemplating a career in education. Clearly, he is a teacher who enjoys his students and loves his subject. We add our voices to the chorus of praise and wish him well in his retirement years. Seniors, does your name begin with Mat-Rob? If so, you know your counselor Paul Heffernan better than most of us. For those who know him personally, he is the master of the pun. For years, he was a member of the rollicking group of faculty members known as the Southborough Express (a carpool). We all know him as a caring person who helps, en- courages, and works his heart out. He is an army veteran who taught at both the elementary and middle school levels before coming to WHS in 1967. We congratulate him and all the happy retirees! 109 Wayland ' s ABC ' s Accounting ■ For anyone who ' s interes- ted in a business career, this course offers essential beginning bookkeeping and accounting pro- cedures. Our athletes are active in a variety of sports, from field hockey to wrestling. Along with providing exercise, discipline, and teamwork, sports were a good way to meet people and enjoy yourself. Every competition was filled with intensity, but the individual performance was just as important as the actual score. Whether we were on the field, or cheer- ing enthusiastically in the stands, Way- land students learned to CELEBRATE VICTORYM m ■ ■ ■ LEADERS OF THE PACK The Cross Country team led by senior co-captains Brenden McMahon and Barry Snyder fin- ished the season with a 5-2-0 win- ning record. Going into the season, the team looked strong with im- pressive wins against Lincoln- Sudbury and Acton-Boxboro. Top runners, Mark Leonard and Kotaro Minami led the team to victory in these earlier meets with their out- standing performances which con- tinued throughout the season. As always, Coach Benedetti did an excellent job of preparing the team for Weston, the team ' s toughest opponent, and also in organizing and hosting the All-League Meet. With the help of Dan Danimal Weintraub, our manager and as- sistant coach, the season ran smoothly despite the efforts of Mike Mahon and the new introduc- t ion of the Barry Stretch to all team workouts. Good luck to next year ' s team which promises to be unstop- pable since all of the top varsity runners are returning. ■ Front Row: Coach Benedetti, Ari Etelman, Dan Weintraub, Co-Capt. The team finished with a 6-5-1 record as opposed to the 2-10 rec- ord of only one year ago. The sea- son was highlighted by a win over archrival Lincoln-Sudbury. Once again, the team was led by senior captains Tom Montesi, Doug Chis- holm, and Eric Shaw. These se- niors held down the top three spots and their skill will be difficult to re- place next season. Despite the loss of these three players, the team ' s future looks optimistic. Juniors Tucker Brown, Mike Lopez, Dave Berns, Adam Grossman, Pete Sor- rentino, and Brad Pope will all re- turn with match experience. Also returning will be promising fresh- man Keir Thielen who posted one of the team ' s best victories while playing the eighth position. Lastly, the team would like to thank Coach McCoy, whose knowledge of golf and sense of humor made this year ' s team live up to the potential that we knew we had. ■ Front Row: Mike Lopez, Tri-Capt. Coach Laurie Nelson, and senior tri-captains Rosemary Looney, Catherine Kennedy, and Amy Pond led the team to a third place finish in the DCL. The warrior stickwomen ended with an 8-4-2 record. This meant, that for the third year in a row, the team made it to the DCL tournament. They traveled to Georgetown with high hopes but were defeated in a 2-1 loss. What set this team apart from past teams was everyone ' s enthusiasm and dedica- tion. The all-star team consisted of Suzi Merselis, Catherine Kennedy, Lori Danieli and Amy Pond; honor- able mention, Rosemary Looney. After a slow start, the spirited team fought back and ended the season with a record of 7-5-2. The top scores were Junior Liz Cohn and Sophomore Becky Williams. The links did a superb job of supporting the forwards and the defense stayed strong. However none of this would have been possible without the assistance of our spec- tacular goalie, Sophomore Betsy Bennett. ■ Back Row: Annis Gilbert, Chapin Spencer, Sharon Hart, Marisa DiCarlo, Lisa Vocatura, Amy Cohn. After this first impressive victory, both coaches and players knew that Wayland had put together a team which would challenge the Dual County League. The Warriors trav- eled to Randolph the next week, only to suffer one of the few losses of the season (7-6). The team re- fused to lay down after this loss, and spirits were high as they pounded out a four game winning streak which was highlighted by an away victory over the previously undefeated Lincoln-Sudbury. Wayland walked off the field with the coveted Warrior trophy. After suffering two losses to powerhouse Acton-Boxboro, and undefeated Westwood, Wayland again stuck it out to beat Newton-South, and therefore clinch a share of the DCL championship. The DCL Champi- onship has not seen the likes of a Wayland football team for over a decade, and team was proud to host the game at home. After the New- ton-South game, the Warriors looked forward to the traditional Thanksgiving day game against Weston. The Warriors were excited to play, and were confident that they would leave the field with a 5- 1 record in the DCL and a 7-3 rec- ord overall. For a team picked to finish 74th out of 75 teams in Di- vision 3, the Warriors gave Way- land a great season and a promise for more to come. The captains and the rest of the Warrior team would like to thank head coach Tom Her- manowski, and assistant coaches Bruce Harris and Tim Cavanaugh for a great season. We would also like to thank the fans who went to our games and supported us throughout the whole year. ■ Front Row:Keith Hills, Keith Parker, Brian McMullen, Captain Adam Hawkes, Captain Jeff Bortone, Captain Darrick Edwards, Captain John Boyajian, Brian Danieli, Stephon Rochelle, Tom Burke. We ... are ... the cheerleaders . . . and we ' d like... to show you... our SPIRIT! The 1988 Fall Cheerlea- ders definitely had something to cheer about this year. They were also successful in spreading spirit throughout the school. There were several fresh faces on the squad, led by Co-Captains Shannon Brothers and Shawnda Rose, and by Coach Pam Pambo Miller. Working together, they made up moves to several new cheers and a half-time dance. It was a very re- warding season and it was def- initely, For the Girls. No matter how cold it is, the cheerleaders stand by their team. 131 GOING FOR THE GOAL Coach Snow says, Don ' t Worry, Be Happy! Contrary to popular belief, success is not mea- sured alone by the record a team earns. True suc- cess is measured by the growth of a team on and off the field. During preseason, we learned that we were not individual players but a collective unit — a team that could hold its own with Di- vision 1 squads. The question was, how we were going to compare with rival D.C.L. teams? The answer came in our first game against Bedford. We could play as a team and compete with the best. Each one of us continually met the chal- lenge. The Roanes inspired us with their hard work and determination. Dave Gaff in kept op- posing goalies on their toes with his finesse shots. The skill and hustle of Dave Watts kept each one of us our toes. As Matt Kavet threat- ened many keepers with his speed and aggres- siveness, Dave Fay protected our net with snagging saves. While opposing teams and ref- erees feared Rob DeSimone ' s tenacity, rival offenses were frustrated with the webbing de- fense of Eben Emery, Doug Ball, and Dwight Blaha. Whether in practice or in a game, each player stood out not as an individual but as con- tributor to the team effort. Through team cooper- ation, we rose to levels of play we should all be proud of! The taste of victory over rival Weston is only surpassed by our stands against Concord- Carlisle, Lincoln-Sudbury, and Acton- Boxborough. On the field we became a function- ing unit under Coach Snow ' s guidance. Off the field, we also grew as a team. We shared laughs at Papa Gino ' s and in school. Our growth on and off the field reveals the true success of the 1988 Varsity Soccer Season. Thank you for all your hard work and commitment this past season. ■ -Bill Wardle, Jeff Adams, and Eric Lavin . - • i Front Row: Tri-Capt. Jeff Adams, Tri-Capt. Eric Lavin, Tri-Capt. Bill Wardle. We played well, but we just proud to be captains of a team with couldn ' t make it happen. That was a positive attitude towards the the quote of our season. Everyone game. Everybody contributed to the successful season which ended in a 8-3-3 record. They had a very strong offense this year. Many goals were scored by Freshman Jody Blank, Sophomores Rebecca Black, Stephanie O ' Connell, Meghan Tufts, Junior Co-Capt. Lisa Handy, Senior Co-Captains Christina Ely, and Jane Troxler (unfortunately, Jane had a rough season due to an ankle injury which kept her out of many games). Mid- field the team was equally strong. It was led by Senior Erica Labb, Ju- niors Lauren Ferguson, Rebecca Spoerl, Darcy Conant, and Eliza- beth McCullough, Sophomores Jackie Urell, Kara Keenan, and Hillary Anderson. These halfbacks were the players who kept us going when the fatigue started to set in. Our defense was outstanding. It was led by Seniors Muffy Connelly and Deb Larsen, Juniors Kim Reynolds and Sophomore Kathy Heppner. The team ' s new goal- keeper, freshman Lauri Schofield, did a great job for her first year in high school. Unfortunately, the team was knocked out of the tournament in the first round. How- ever, it was a close game and everyone played their best. The team is only losing five starting se- niors, which means next year the team should do just as well, if not better. ■ Senior Muffy Connelly wonders if the team will really make it to the tournament this year. The team was led by D.C.L. All-Stars Tom Montesi and Tri- Captain Matt Weagle. Montesi pro- vided the team with scoring via his three point bombs and penetrating moves, and Weagle gave the team rebounding and a strong inside game. Also helping the cause were guards and Tri-Captains John Boyajian and Mike James. These two were able to easily defeat op- posing teams ' presses and convert them into layups. Tom Burke was a force to be reckoned with on the boards as one of the league ' s top re- bounders. Ned Burke, Matt Thompson, and Brian Danieli chipped in with strong contri- butions off the bench. Also on the team, although not seeing much playing time, were David Watts, David Roane, Craig Simpson, and Todd Perkins, all of whom formed the enthusiastic bench cheering squad. The team would like to thank Coach Porrell for his time and effort in the past season and hope for his continued success. Despite the lack of communication on the part of the Wayland Girls ' Swimming and Diving Team, they once again surpassed all expectations and received second place in the DCL championships. Captains Andrea Wald, Andrea Harthorne, and Jen Breed worked with coaches Charlie Davis and Mike Piazzo to keep the spirits high and the team hopeful. This season was a growing experience where individuals exceeded goals set early on in the season. The team is looking for another astounding season in 1989. ■ Front Row: Nicole Lanza, Winnie Chase, Amy MacMillan, Julie von der Heyde, Samantha Jacobson, Heather Barnard. The three captains Dennis Doherty, Brian Cromwell, and Jim Kissane kept the team ' s optimism and spirit at an all- time high. The team was always grateful for the many three-point shots that Dennis Doherty managed to accumulate. Most of all, the team was thankful that all players made very valuable contributions to fheir success; the bench was very support- ive and enthusiastic. The team hopes for continued success in the future. Front Row: Jamie Roane, Dave Kelton, Andy Carini, Bob Andrews, David Montague. HOOP-LA We ' re gonna tell you ' bout this year ' s team, We ' d like to say we were champs, but it ' s only a dream- We had a coach who made us tough, But when it came to games we weren ' t so rough- We were a young team, so there were many disasters, But come next year we will be basketball masters! The Frosh on our team was very good, Even though she didn ' t see as much playing time as she should. The Sophomores on our team were really neat, Because in the games they never had cold feet. The Juniors on our team had loosened up joints, And in all of the games they racked up points. The Seniors on the team there were only three, And for running the games they had the key. So, for next year we have big plans, Come watch us, we need more fans! Senior Jen Thompson-Breed keeps a firm grip on the ball. Front Row: Kara Keenan, Rebecca Black, Tri-Capt. Erica Labb, Tri-Capt. Due to accidents, our team fell be- hind this season. Four days into the season, Captain Lauren Ferguson broke her finger and was out for al- most the whole season, although she eventually came back to part- icipate on beam. Kristen Coletti, a promising freshman, severely sprained her ankle the night of the Milford meet; however, she came to every other meet and helped to keep up the team spirit. Jill Hard- enberg, another promising fresh- man, dislocated her shoulder, but also came back to participate on floor. Kistra (Boffa) Lewis hit her personal best on bars (5.85), Alex Meek hit her personal best on floor (7.3), and Michelle Chiasson hit her personal best on beam. The freshmen Amy Cohn, Kristen Col- etti, Jill Hardenberg, and Courtney Sullivan will continue to contribute to the teams ' success. The sophom- ores, Michelle (Madda) Chiasson, Nissa Halting, and Kistra Lewis will aid the team for the next two years. The juniors, Captain Peggy Charlton, Capt. Lauren Ferguson, and Alex Meek contributed to the team ' s final scores. Captain Sherry (Sliceman) Earle, the only senior, will be missed; her high scores and hard work have made her a role model for everyone. Our coach Mr. Sharkey (Rusty), has helped to keep us motivated, and has put up with eleven girls ' attitudes and still manages to understand. He has been a good coach and the whole team thanks him for a great sea- son. Lacking experience and depth, this year ' s squad struggled in the very competitive Dual County League. Hopes were high in the early season as the Warriors returned thirteen lettermen and op- ened with a 2-2 tie against Stoug- hton. However, from there, things seemed to go downhill as the team lost several close contests. Despite the disappointing losses, the Warriors continued to work hard and show a healthy attitude under the leadership of senior players Jamie Berger, Doug Chisholm, Andy Grosso, Keith Hills, Eric McCallig, Martin McNary, and Keith Parker, which resulted in two ties against league rivals Weston and Bedford. With a strong core of returning underclassmen, the team looks forward to continued impro- vement in the future. A hockey player attempts to block his opponent ' s incoming shot. Captain Mike Angus scrutinizes the offensive players. Warrior player maintains control of the ;fense. 149 CHEERS! The winter cheerleaders brought tremendous spirit to all of the basketball games this year. They were an eneregetic and enthusiastic group of girls who helped all the Wayland fans cheer on the home team. All the team members, whether new or experienced, worked well together to come up with several orginal moves, cheers, and dances. These girls often do not get much recognition for all the en- ergy and time they put in through- out the season, but they deserve a lot of credit. ■ Promise you ' ll catch me if I fall?! ' Yeah, that ' s right, we ' re SURE! Clapping in rhythm always helps to get the fans psyched up. 150 With a few exceptions, it was an ex- cellent season. Ninety-nine percent of our team achieved our goal of teaching everyone to be a groovy dude. While we ' re on the subject, this year ' s Best Freshman Award goes to the Groovy Dude himself (from the Tune Master). Thank God there was hardly any snow, so all the cross-country meets were short. And luckily Nashoba saved us with the Ultragroom. We dev- eloped a special bond with Mike- we kept the bus the cleanest, and of course Freddy K.- even though he made us late because of a flat tire. With most of the let- termen from last year ' s DCL cham- pion team lost to graduation, this was a rebuilding year. The Warriors surprised everyone, though, with a 5-2 season, losing the league cham- pionship by only two points to Acton-Boxboro in the Acton- Boxboro Weston tri-meet. Many new talents emerged this year, and Arthur Lowe, Doug Labb, Omar Lawrence, Co-Captain Rob Des- imone, Eben Emery, Scott Orem- land, Co-Captain Mark Leonard, Kotaro Minami, Chuck Colella, Keith Dejesus, George Hamilton, and Greg Demartini were top per- formers in their respective events. Thanks to Coach Snow ' s leadership and knowledge, and Manager Jen Snow ' s assistance, these athletes worked together to produce a winn- ing team. The team will miss the seniors, but since the majority of the team consists of underclassmen, the team hopes for success at the state level next year. The re- building year resulted in a 4-6 sea- son, which is actually quite a good record; three of those losses were to the traditional powerhouses Weston, Acton-Boxboro, and Lin- coln-Sudbury. First year coach Reid Christen trained the eleven man team so well that it managed to beat teams more than twice their size. Under the leadership of Cap- tains Tim Sosnowski and Jon Cannon, the team cheered Sophom- ores Noel LaPierre and Andrew Gronewold to new heights. The team looked to Matt Whelton and Jeff Swarz for their freestyle sprints, and the much improved Rob McCauley for diving. Seniors Kevin Slep and Jon Harlan turned in exceptional times throughout the season, while Bill Wardle provided Way land with crucial points. Next year, the Warriors will watch Mike Daly and Jon Shelton at their best. Front Row: Capt. Tim Sosnowski, Capt. Jon Cannon, Andrew Gronewold, Michael Daly, Jon Harlan. For the first time in many years, the team ended the sea- son placing second in the Dual County League with a record of 7- 1. Thanks to an abundance of un- derclassmen, this team was able to dominate most meets. We were able to fill every race, and consist- ently placed several runners in the top five. A highlight of the season was when we were faced with the Tri-Meet against Acton-Boxboro and Weston, two tough opponents. The team, led by captains Suzi Merselis, Julie Moyer, Jane Trox- ler, and Amy Wallace, raced their way to a well-deserved victory. The team used this meet to explode and show the other two teams what it felt like to be blown away. It was especially exciting to defeat Weston for the first time in eight years. For the rest of the season the girls did not let down for even one step; this young team showed spect- ators the way track was meant to be run. TWIST AND SHOUT The 1988-89 wrestling season was one to be remembered. Going into the season as the number one ranked team in Division II central, Way land swept through the Dual County League, defeating all opponents by thirty or more points, except Weston. The rival team lost by quite a bit more, as the Warrior matmen gave Coach Moyer his second shutout in twenty-two years by def- eating them 73-0. The team, led by Tri-Captains Aaron Ashton, Dave Hanlon, Keith Thomason and sen- iors Dwight Blaha, Scott Clark, Dana Ruzicka, Dan Messina, Paul Boogie Dragonetti, and Jeff Beef Bortone guided the team to a 13-1 season, losing only to Western Mass. Powerhouse Monument MT. by a small margin. Backed by a solid squad of underclassmen, the open spots that the seniors left open were easily filled. Juniors David Schuma- cher, Ted Keenen, J.J. Maroney, Sophomore Chris Terrenzi and Freshmen Dan Hennessy and Mark Carapezza took to these spots. Per- sonal stars of the season accumula- ted two Tournament Champion- ships, an Outstanding wrestler, and a handful of D.C.L. All-Stars. Coach Moyer has waited four years for this team which was the most ex- perienced team he has ever coached, having five or six wrestlers with three or more years of varsity com- petition. The warriors are the fav- orite to win the Central Sections, and have five six wrestlers who can place in the Div. II State Tourney. The 1989-90 team will have a tough act to follow. REALLY FINE ARTS Whether it is academics, sports, or extra- curricular activities, Wayland students excel in whatever they do. Fine arts is no different. Way land ' s programs in music, art and dramatics are superior to many other schools; this is evident in the way that WHS students make the most of what is available. Mr. Rumrill, the director of the art program, has been encouraging talented young artists for some time. Working in various media, including oils, watercolor, pastel, clay, and metal, art students are allowed to express their visions in any way they choose. By offering classes as well as workshop courses, students are able to elect programs which best suit their specific con- centrations. When the end product is displayed, it is always a source of pride for the artist and the other members of WHS. 168 The music program is further proof of Way- land ' s artistic brilliance. Concert after concert, the band and orchestra continue to delight packed audiences. The Wayland High Jazz Band is another instrumental delight. The concert choir is chosen from the terrific chorus, and both groups develop some of the most beautiful voices to inspirational heights. The Madrigals, yet another singing group, also present quality mus- ical performaces with their original forms of music. Dramatics is another area filled with talent. Since the program is constantly seeking new and versatile talents, every performance draws upon the wealth of great actors we have at Wayland. Each and every show has a certain unforgetable life and vibrance. All in all, it is obvious that the arts program here at Wayland is truly outstanding. ■ Wayland students excitedly celebrate yet another Superquiz victory. John Todd is too busy to think about math... BRAIN POWER Wayland! Nationally rated?! Any senior knows that it is definitely an advantage to be coming from a school like Wayland. We ' re so academic- ally advanced, we have clubs that are primarily academic. However, as of all the organizations here at Wayland, academics here are only the start... One of the most prestigious groups at the high school is the National Honor Society. An annually chosen honor, each year ' s ceremony is full of excited juniors who finally receive rec- ognition for their hard work and their outstand- ing achievement. This year, when Wayland hosted the Academic Decathlon Competition, some of the society ' s members even worked as guides for the visiting decathletes. And speaking of Academic Decathlon, this year ' s team showed that academics truly can be a good time. This year ' s team, an incredible example of aca- demic prowess, won one four golds, four silvers, and three bronze medals, as well as the trophy for the highest scores in the honors category. Also, the Academic Decathlon team placed first in the State Finals and then went on to the Nat- ional Championships in Rhode Island. All together, this year ' s team, though a little more cynical than previous years, carried on that great tradition of the new decathletes. For even more intellectual challenge, many students tried their brains on the Math Team. The team participat in head-to-head competition in the Massac! setts Mathematics League and the Grea Boston Mathematics League. And when I team competed in the New England M; League, they were fortunate enough to have i golden opportunity of sampling Ms. Gagn home-cooked goodies. Although suffering slight lack of quantity, there is no lack of qualil and several juniors and sophomores have ceived accolades for their outstanding perso performances. Ms.Gagne ' s double-chocol brownies also got a round of applause. 170 Juniors Ted Gulley and Pete Sorrentino eagerly anticipate the start of another Tuesday meeting. Junior Mike Gardner, Sophomore Rick Suvalle and Senior Ann Marie Allara wait for the meeting to get underway. For years now, the Student Council has not nec- essarily received the highest praise; however, this year, under the extremely lively care of Pres- ident Carrie Clifford, the Student Council has given itself a new image. Yes, it ' s true, from those party-like meetings right down to our rip- roaring social events, the Student Council is def- initely New and Improved. One of our first tasks was to figure just where things had gone wrong in the past. Once we found that out, then came the remedies. You might have noticed that the Student Council bulletin board in the office was always in full swing, and kept things up-to-date on our activities. Whenever we planned events, we were also sure to get your input instead of working in a vaccum as in previous years. And one of the newest features of the council was our new Community Awareness Policy in which we helped out our community both where needed as well as where it was a matter of a good time. From delivering groceries to the poor on Thanks- giving to a council-wide participation in the Walk for Peace, the council was always ready to lend a helping hand. But don ' t think we also didn ' t look out for things in our school! The an- nual task of Winter Week was at last given proper consideration and planning time, and the results were terrific. Between Rebecca Black and Lauren Ferguson ' s Dating Game , right up to Kristin DeVoe ' s Win, Lose or Draw , and Ann Marie Allara and Danny Chung ' s Battle of the Bands , the school was treated to a week that was full of good times and lived up to the true Winter Week tradition. At the meetings them- selves, the council was part of a new or- ganizational mode of operation. The meetings were more efficiently run, and every task we set out to do was accomplished with utmost speed and ability. All around, it was a great year for tl newly revised Student Council. Not only are Latin Club productions masterfully acted, they ' re also filled with dynamic special effects. WATCH YOUR MOUTH ! We all take at least three years of it, some of us even five years. Yet, despite all this time inves- ted, the three language clubs receive enthusiastic turn-outs every year! Be it Latin, French, or Spanish, the language clubs are so much fun that some students would even claim the clubs to be their favorite activity! ! The clubs hold events for the public: plays, exhibits, and of course, everyone ' s favorite, International Night, a time when we all get a taste of cultures around the globe, with a touch of Way land High School ' s own! The Latin Club ' s first event of the year, a spaghetti dinner, was one of the most successful of all the dinners the club has ever held. Good attendance followed by raving praises set the club off for a terrific year! After the fear of dwindling membership, the club was delighted at the glory of thirty-four new members, making the annual infamous initiation a exciting event. And the Saturnalian! Truly a crowning achieve- ment (even despite Charon Sosnowski ' s show-stopping raft ride!), Mr. Smith ' s undaunt- ing inspiration and Bruce Greenberg ' s off-beat leadership lead the club to other exciting flights of fancy, with the results of an ill-fated yet well- done production of the Greek classic, Trojan Women. Oh, and yes, Mr. Smith, Christian WILL get right on it! The Spanish Club met with a bit of ill-fortune this year, turning their usual fiesta into a siesta! They mainly experienced problems out of their own control, (you know how tough scheduling can be!) but even still, they were filled with zest and zeal! Although they had a lack of activities, they made up for it at their wacky meetings! And in the end, the Chi-Chi ' s dinner was a hit. 01 Last but certainly not least came the Fren Club. They kicked off the year with a simp scrummy orange juice and croissant breakfi where they started a debate on how to correct pronounce croissant. And Christine Girarc secret crepe recipe made the club ' s Crepe Sal mouth-watering masterpiece. Due to an unfortunate lack of school furniture, Mr. Auciello proceeds to edit the literary magazine sitting on the floor. Sophomore Jen Montbach is clearly amazed at the quality of the finished product. OUTSIDE IN ! No matter where it is, inside or out, Wayland students have a great time at what they are doing. These pages contain what most people might consider the least associated groups at the High School, but they share one common tie: they ' re all examples of Wayland ' s excellence and diver- sity. For quite some while, the Outing Club has been creeping up as one of the most popular in the school. By far one of the most laid back clubs here, trips are their thing, and there ' s no limit on what they end up doing. However, con- sidering it ' s the Outing Club, they are limited by the ever-swaying weather conditions. And this year they sure did sway! However, that didn ' t snuff the club ' s spirit, and they just kept trying. Unfortunately, other than a soggy school-front camp-out, it was a slightly slow year. Oh well, the slide-shows weren ' t that bad. . .Student Awareness for a Better School Environment, better known as SABSE, might be considered one of the low-profile clubs here at Wayland. Yet their annual Freshman Clean-up was a suc- cess (no, they cleaned the campus, not the Fresh- men). If you ever happened to be walking into school one morning and noticed that things were slightly cleaner, remember it was probably SABSE ' s doing. The great outdoors isn ' t every- body ' s cup of tea, but the Literary Magazine proves that that doesn ' t matter — and this year they did it twice! The wealth of hidden talent in our school was truly amazing! Poets, authc artists, you name it! The two publications of ' Literary magazine — the first tw o-issue y ever — were both incredible hits. The Liter Magazine was a success story that just goes and on — like a run-on sentence! And speak of literary success stories, this year ' s newspa was truly a crowning achievement. WORTH THE WAIT ! Waiting for Lefty... And Righty, and Richard, and Lou, and John Harvey ' s entrance, and Rob ' s sanity; yes, the cast of this year ' s fall dramatic production did a lot of waiting even after the script. Yet, even though Lefty didn ' t quite make it, the play was a smash! We started out with what most would call a completely bizarre cast. Some of us were long, long (oh! too long) vet- erans, others were beginners, and a select few were complete and total first-timers. However, it could have been Kashi ' s and Christian ' s Pepto Parties, or Rich Abraham ' s 50% Elvis-arm- flailing, or Damian Burkemper ' s and Dave ' s Dep-o-rama, but whatever it was, it brought us together like no other experience. For anyone under forty to really understand what the Depres- sion was about is a lot to ask. Most of us can only guess at facts. Yet this odd, mismatched group had to find some way to find out what it was like. Richard ' s inspirational slides, Michael ' s abun- dance of A. P. facts, Ama ' s leggy-tassles, and all those clothes (even the Indiana Jones hats and form-fitting lab-coats) helped us to piece together an era that, for us, is no more than pen on paper. Yet these things were only a start to the road ahead of us; there were a lot of subtleties we had to master if we were to get this thing right. How did they talk? (Somehow, only Chris Blanah Blane managed to differentiate be- tween beaneries and Runout powders. ) How did they move? (Think boxer, Rick, BOXER! And Kate, never mind acting like it, what IS an Oscillot?!) Where did they live? Graham ' s house? (Erica, the ironing board ' s got to go!) What did they do? (eg gives a GREAT massage.) Were they like us? (Sid and Nancy and Sid and Florrie and Irv and Florrie and Mike but NOT the Young Hack.) The most difficult question we had to ask, though, was what were these peo like. Oh, sure, we could very well have done musical-comedy version of Lefty (she ' s goi leave ' ya Joe... she ' s gonna leave ya...Look yourself, Joe! What are ya doin ' JoeJ Sr gonna leave ya Joe! Look in the garage, Jo ' however, this play in particular had to be i ious. We had done the work, now it was tirrn wait for things to pull together — time to wait the elusive Lefty. Finally, on opening ni[ he made it! Then Dave Jones shot him. giggled. (Poor J.T., he ' s dead. Oh well, w buy a new one!) The play was an energetic, r istic show that left the audience stunned. Chris, there you are.) And from the f Where ' s Lefty, to the last Home of the AND the brave, (O.K. you little teapot — f time to fight), Waiting for Lefty was a h NO CONTEST! What a long, long trip it ' s been! In the begin- ning, the contest play, Love Letters to Amer- ica, was just a thought in Director Richard Weingartner ' s head. Then the cast, nine young actors, came together for an experience they ' ll never forget, and one they ' ll cherish forever. Many of the vignettes started as simply notes on paper. Eventually they were developed into scenes and, after days of sweat, fret and frustra- tion, it was all molded into a script. Many vari- eties of topics were covered so that the forty-five minutes seemed a whirlwind flight of fancy across America and back! The cast ' s experience at Emerson College was indeed a beneficial and enlightening one. Not only were they able to get a sampling of dramatic performances from seven other schools, but each of them were able to attend workshops on all aspects of theater pro- duction — from how to take a fake fall to just what lighting gives the best effects. And boy, wasn ' t that lunch just sumptious! Yet, with all the learning that went on throughout the whole process, there were other elements involved tl made the experience of Contest Play a truly sj cial one. Each year is a new cast, and each yeai a new experience. The gang in Letters gr together and shared a common tie they will h dear for years to come. The cast made a trail tion to family somewhere along that long ro; and now share a warmth and sensitivity t ' i makes Contest not so much a play as it is an perience. Bring a lil ' water, Sylvie... 180 Junior Latanya Fulgham and Freshman Brian Cromwell were part of the incredible presentation, The Metco Experience. Officer Williams lets them have it. And here is yet another thrilling student discussion group. I ' M SO DIVERSE! It started as a dream — no wait — a vision. Whose it was, no one ' s really sure, and it doesn ' t matter. A little support here, a few nights of typ- ing, a survey, and some 153 phone calls later the concept of Diversity Day was complete. So many people were involved in putting it to- gether, especially during those first few meet- ings when everyone and their brother wanted to get involved. However, maybe it was the fact that we met on Friday afternoons, or that no one ever really knew exactly what was going to hap- pen next, but the group dwindled down to a few ambitious folks who kept that original vision alive. Granted, it was sometimes kept alive on 182 life support, but it survived all the same. The months came to weeks, the weeks to days, Mr. Tornrose had a breakdown, days to hours, Chris- tian lost the schedule, hours to minutes, Who ' s hosting what? ; and finally it began. Ms. Buck- ley all a-grin and Mr. Frio lost to all that was evolving around him, students began to show up. First the job of perking this school up. That went to a small two-micrphoned Latin-samba band. Where are you going first block? A2008. Whatever that is. Amazingly, most of the problems we ex- pected were ironed out quickly and smoothly. The Metco performance was inspirational ai those student workshops... well, a few were brain child from hell. Officer Williams, the mc popular event of the day, was the most inform tive event, and the Holocaust workshop left a I of people with memories. Yes, eventually tho pent-up faces turned to relief and pride as the d slowly bloomed into a success. There are a lot people left over who now patiently wait for t next one. To most of us, it ' s no more than, vague memory of a winter day turned topsi turvy. Yet not just another day. Whatever hi pened was once in a long time. So D-day sa good-bye. Until the next vision... Now just a dim glowing memory, while it lasted it was one of the most memorable events of the year! Winter Week is a tradition that has been around much longer than most peo- ple cared to remember, and in recent years have shown enthusiasm has been lacking. However, this year ' s ever-so-perky Student Council made it one of the best in its history! Games, contests, social events, and a laugh or two were all shared by the school in a week that truly blew off the steam from Mid- Year exams. (And how!) The week started off with the now famous Human Diversity Day. But that was only the beginning. Everyone always crams themselves into an over- packed Little Theater to see their friends put on the annual talent show. This year, it was even more crowded than ever. Who could forget the stunning performance by the teachers or the mel- odious refrains of Mr. Tornrose ' s 6th peri od En- glish class. Yes, the talent show was, as usual, first rate amateur entertainment. But if the Talent show was good, then the first annual Battle of the Bands was incredible. Members from all grades were involved, and the turnout was phenomenal. The first annual Golden Amp award bestowed to the rather hairy group who called them- selves Freedom Rock . The fun didn ' t stop there, however. Wednesday ' s Dating Game was another first-time smash. Pure silliness ran wild on stage as the gentlemanly (cough-cough) bach- elors and demure (A-hem) bachlorettes went a to try to find their perfect match. Yes, the uendoes were flying high as this makeshift bat of the sexes sent us all into uproarious laught Thursday was the usual John Dellaria Cut-up a the lines went on and on. Apparently Mei hairstyle was a hit! Then on Friday we all tr our hands a the first-time Win, Lose, or Dra Well, we may not be the greatest artists, but had a great time trying. All in all, the New Improved Tradition of Winter Week was that payed off and will hopefully be can through future years with equal success. The Dodgers captured their sixth World Series title in October with a 5-2 victory over the Oakland A ' s in the fifth game of the series. It became an international effort of good will. Russians and American rescuers cut through the ice in Alaska to save two California gray whales. The whales were trapped in the ice for more than three weeks. News media from around the world converged on the tiny village of Barrow, Alaska, to cover the successful rescue. President Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev worked for several years to bring the two countries together. After a treaty was signed to eliminate certain nuclear weapons, 1988 was the year the efforts of these two leaders finally went into effect. The stars of the 1988 Summer Olympics, clockwise from top: diver Greg Louganis won 2 medals; track and field star Carl Lewis won 2 gold (including 1 after Canadian Ben Johnson was disqualified) and 1 silver; Florence Griffith Joyner won 3 gold and 1 silver; swimmer Matt Biondi celebrated with 5 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze. 1988 SUMMER OLYMPICS 218 V ' •. s The Democrats decided on the Governor of Massachusetts, Michael Dukakis, to be its candidate for President. He picked Lloyd Bentsen, a senator from Texas, as his running mate. The shuttle Discovery blasted into orbit in September, the first space flight since the shuttle Challenger mission ended tragically after 73 seconds, lifted off on Jan. 28, 1988. Forest fires spread throughout the western part of the country in the summer of 1988, destroying million of acres of national parkland. The most heavily damaged was Yellowstone National Park. The yellow walls become a cage imprisoning the strangest of all life ' s forms-the 1989 Reflector Staff. Most students don ' t know exactly what goes on in this room, and wonder what this special breed does from 2:30 to 6:00 every day. (In case you ' re wondering... on page fourteen, we used a gradation screen of Hunter Publishing Company process yellow, top to bottom, to 100 percent. All white boxes are kicked out with two-point close register tool lines. All copy was printed in one hundred percent black Americana 220 with headlines A, B, and C in 30 point and all body copy in 18 point. The page kicker was one hundred percent black in Avant Book 161 in 18 point). The Reflector ' 89 story began last August when Co- Editors-in-Chief Kristin DeVoe and Saeyun Lee drove in Kristin ' s white Jeep Cherokee all the way down Route 128 to Westfield State College. Here we attended a seminar sponso- red by Hunter Publishing Company. We participated in sev- eral workshops and were named the official 1988-1989 Theme Queens for all our fabulous theme ideas . We finally decided on Celebrate because it reminded us of Kool the Gang ' s song, Celebration which was played at our eighth grade dance in Washington D.C. (Although Saeyun hobbled around all four days with a sprained ankle, she managed to clean up the blackjack table on Las Vegas night.) On Freshman Orientation day, the editors met for the first time to plan for the coming year. September, October and November were spent frantically trying to meet that first deadline on November 15 (just kidding Jen; it was the 22nd!) Karen and Anna completely freaked when they discovered that they would indeed have to subject themselves to the dreaded crappy croppers . While Justine and Lorian did a successful in redesigning the Faculty section, Doug had some difficulty keeping the freshmen faces in order. Mean- while, Andrea treaded water in order to take the girl ' s swimming team picture. In order to create the beautiful photograph on pages two and three, we bought balloons from Paperama, stood on the table in S22, and spent the afternoon licking pieces of con- fetti to make them stick to the balloons. After shooting count- less pictures from countless angles, we finally came up with this four-color masterpiece which cost approximately $450 dollars to produce. After November 22nd, we scrambled to layout the 69 pages needed for the December deadline. Kevin, as the Most Organized senior male, had already completed all his layouts, and his Senior section was sent without a flaw. Kristin and Saeyun spent the entire month of December in front of the computers, Fred Harold, typing blurbs (we ' re extremely glad everybody had great times w great friends ). The January deathline was non-existent, and Arnie, our beloved yearbook representative, was shocked; I can ' t be- lieve this. . .from my Wayland girls! Christian also graced us with his presence this first month of 1989... will wonders ever cease? While Aran was off skiing at Nashoba, Anu and Dave begged for money by calling every senior parent, and contacting every business in Wayland. Erica ran around tak- ing pictures of all the Winter Week activities, and Dan dropped by every once and a while to keep us company. Feburary and March were hellish, but on March 7th we really had cause to CELEBRATE.... after eight months of stress and hysteria, the 1989 Reflector was finally finished. We never could have done it without Ms. Bouin, Arnie, Mr. McCoy (we like your red sweater! Thanks for your advice and support!), Harold and Fred (although we do miss you Fred), and Domino ' s Pizza. Many thanks to Anytime Anyplace for all of your creative inspiration. CELEBRATE COMPLETION !■ 229 ... so bring your good times and your laughter too, come on and celebrate we ' re going to party with you! 230
