The yearbook theme this year evokes all of these and leads us to our private fantasy worlds as we conquer the roaring California surf or skillfully race towards the Hawaiian shore. lt does little good to catch the wave if you don't plan to also ride it. And riding one takes courage - the courage to dream and the courage to risk. Thoreau tells us that dreams are the touchstones of our YES .. . l'T1el l .... character. As educated, bright people you should realize that impediments to success often lie within ourselves. We must not content ourselves with accept- ing what comes easilyg not just any old wave will do. If we sit back passively awaiting our fate, mediocrity andfor failure are just around the corner. Dream high. Believe in yourselves and your abilities. Your dreams are yours to shape and mold. Do so with vigor, en- ff l6 ...68 ...79 ...86 94 all ...l-46 ...l80 thusiasm, and confidence. Catch the highest wave and har- ness its force and power. Be certain that you will occa- sionally choose the wrong wave. The small swell will swirl and accelerate and look like just what you want. You will be tempted and you will be fooled. Each of us is human and the es- sence of that humanity is that we have, and will inexorably ex- ercise, the capacity to be less than perfect and make mis- takes. Remember that Abraham Lincoln lost several elections before he won the presidency. Columbus found America, but he was looking for India!
