After this, Mr. Anastas and his founding presidents Carl Olsen and Dana Fokos realized that they had a mission to accom- plishg spreading the word to other students in other schools. Within two years, chapters of SADD had sprung up all over not just Massachusetts but the entire country. Millions of Contracts for Life have been handed out and signed. This contract states that a parent will provide transportation for a child, and vice versa, if he or she has been drinking, or if the driver of the vehicle they would have been riding in has been drinking. Both parents and children sign this docu- ment, promising to help one another in any drinking and driving situation. ln many communities, studentfparent groups have formed to provide transportation in these situations on a regular basis. - Kim Mitchell The Student Awareness program is made up of a group of 12 students who were selected from a group of 50 applicants last spring. They spent time over the summer learning about the effects of drugs and alcohol on people so they could take that knowledge this winter to the younger grades to educate them about their role in decisions later on. lt has been a rewarding and special program for all the participants, one they are sure to remember with fondness.
