F The most striking feature of the Language Department is its dedicated staff of professionals who are enthusiastic about the subjects they teach and enjoy working with young people. Strik- ing too is the charismatic head of the department, Frank Smith. Mr. Smith is celebrating twenty-five years as a teacher at Wayland High School and concurrently the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Latin Club which he founded. Voted Mass. Teacher of the Year last spring, Mr. Smith has been featured on TV and asked to speak at many gatherings. He was recognized at a formal ceremony presided over by Govenor Mike Dukakis. As in past years, students from France and Spain visited WHS as part of the department's ex- change program. The upcoming trip to Italy has drawn an overflow crowd. Mr. Smith had to turn away sixteen students. Curri- culum work during the summer provided new cultural units for the classical studies courses and a course of study for French V. Mr. UAGE DEP RTME Karen Chacon Jeanne Smith Smith is particularly pleased with the increased enrollment and enthusiasm for the history courses offered by the depan- ment, a trend which he hopes to see continue. 24 - Faculty Ev' Ms. Mensh Types away So. you forgot your homework again! MATHEM TICS DEP RTME Mathematics is another department noted for its ability to draw and hold students beyond the two years required for graduation. A policy allowing concurrent enrollment in two math courses has made the difference. The competitive spirit of students finds an outlet in math. As in years past, math luminaries excel on brain- teaser exams such as the Annual Olympiad Examination and the traditional MAML Test. Notable among changes this year is the retirement of veteran teacher Richard Bolster and the arrival of rookie teacher Steve Tarver. Mr. Bolster is leaving Wayland High School after twenty-two years of service. Mr. Tarver is one of several former Douglas Stather, Dept.
