High School Administration Change is an absolute in our society and in our world, and our effectiveness as people is influenced significantly by how each of us deals with change. Each of us is a change agent in his own life. Our effectiveness as change agents is determined by the goals we set for ourselves and our determination to achieve these goals. When we are able to set purposeful and productive goals and when we have the determination to achieve these goals, we become effec- tive change agents in our own lives and we can, if we choose, influence, in significant ways, the institutions around us. XX' hen I look back over the 1970's and consider the changes that have occurred during this time period, I am impressed with how students have learned to influence change in the schools and in the society. In the late 6Ois, pressed by the Viet Nam War and responding to societal injustices, student groups throughout the nation rallied together, formed protest groups and made efforts to change the world around them. Their actions, their dress, their manner all contributed to the clash that followed. A new value system was being proposed, and the adult population could not hear the ideas of the protesters because the superficial values of dress, manner and action got in the way of the message. Today, student groups are working in a more systematic way to achieve the goals they have established for them- selves. At Wayland High School, in the seven years since the sixties, there have been many changes in the pro- gram, and students have had a significant part in the change process. The Open Campus program developed out of students' effortsg a Human Sexuality course was introduced into the curriculum through the efforts of students, and the Independent Study program was influenced significantly from its beginning by students and the opportu- nities they sought. For the past two years we have seen Student Council working in a systematic way toward improved staff X student relationships. A school workshop for the total Wayland High School community Cstu- dents and staffj has already occurred. A second one is being planned. The student Advisory Board is currently making plans to establish an inter-community program with other SAB groups in the area. Each of these efforts brings about or effects change and each requires the setting of goals and determination to achieve these goals. We are in a new era of student involvement. Student groups are increasingly effective in planning and achieving the goals they set. The results are orderly and productive change. Value clashes are minimized by dia- logue and opportunity for reapproachment. For the future, we can expect that change will occur at an even more rapid rate. Each of us has the responsibil- ity to look at his own part in the change pattern. We can become effective change agents, and we can influ' ence, in a positive and productive way, our personal lives as well as the lives of the institutions which make J up our society. M Charles E. Goff Principal Upper right: Dr, Charles Goff. Bot- tom. Mr. joseph Mauger, Mr. David Connolly. :S 24 Guidance This year the guidance department, with the aid of six new personnel, extended its efforts into many new areas. For the first time, guidance has combined with the learning resource team, which has organized programs in reading, basic skills, and l..R.T, 980 Ctutorialj. Students seeking direc- tion in future planning have found useful information in the new career resource center directed by career planning specialist Mr. Heffernan. Ms. Morris and Mr. Moyer, along with college plan- ning specialist Mr. Oxford, have been dealing with seniors. Next year, guidance looks forward to the continuation of successful programs such as future planning night, S.A.T. reviews, College Exploration Day and the ongoing Aday program. , ,uv A 4 -v. 5 J N--my jf ,X I ll .7 j H .L 4 f. .. In its elective program for juniors and seniors, it offers a wide variety of courses for stu' dents of all abilities and interests. The courses are regularly reviewed, and new courses are added to update the program. This year, Black Literature and The Personal Voice, a course in essays. letters and poetry, have been added. Next year Contemporary Culture, a course in media such as magazines, television, and movies and their effects on our lives, will be offered along with the course Practical English. The Communications Skills Program continues to provide an attractive option for over one-fourth of all students. It is a unique program in Massachusetts and has been cited for its innovative approaches to teaching English. ,-nw., -jx fix 1I. ,,,,,L7 Y. ..' i-. Mr. Walter john SOD. fd' History This year the History Department went through a major renovation, the relocating of its offices from the Media Center to its own building. This turned out to be a great convenience, despite the cramped conditions. The Department has dropped some of the old social science elec- tive courses and added some new ones, but on the whole has stressed revisions of the parent courses, while the basic Freshman, Sophomore and junior courses are due to remain the same. As other departments have turned to using only medium group rooms, the History Department has remained the only one still using the small, medium and large group rooms, thus emphasizing continuity over change. In a wide range of courses, thirty new hand- held calculators, complete with buttons for pi and the trig functions, are saving students the time and bother of arithmetic computation. The calculators, by facilitating easy solutions once prob- lems are set up, allow the student on any level to concentrate on the concepts of the mathematical process. In addition, the course in statistics, now in its third year, hopes to spark student interest by applying math to the practical world, Finally, an expanded student tutoring program, coordia nated by Seniorjanet Blau, has provided a useful service to struggling pupils. ff! 'Q.?7 Foreign Languages The Language Department, although it offers no required courses, has long been one of the most stable departments at Wayland. This is mainly due to its fine faculty and its appealing curric- ulum. Since all language courses are taken on the students' own volition, the department has found it imperative to maintain high standards and to cater to the students' intellectual needs and curiosity. This year, both the modern language and the classical studies courses have modified classroom materials. Further changes have been made in the large group room, L-lg audio-visual equipment and theatrical lighting have been added, enabling the department to have a formal speaker program, plays, and other dramatic and cultural presentations, This will also allow the department greater flexibility in its curriculum. Although the Language Department contains both the classical languages and the modern lan- guages, the department continues to function as a cohesive unit. In November, the entire depart- ment, along with the corresponding language clubs, recreated a Medieval Banquet, an effort which had never previously materialized. The Medieval Week which followed included a number of guest speakers, as well as unique film and videotape presentations. The Language Department hopes to provide all students at Way'land High School with the opportunity to learn about the languages, literature, and culture of Wfestern Civilization. Physical Education The words physical education have begun to take on a new meaning at Yifayland High within the past few years, Students are rapidly becoming condition consciousg more aware of the whys and hows of physical training thanks to a widened curriculum and the adoption of a new teathing method associated with the School Planning Educational Communications System. The SPECS program is a relatively new concept designed to develop within each student a greater degree of proficiency and competence in a particular sport. It also attempts to give a pupil enough knowledge about a sport for him to really appreciate it outside of school. This year tennis and badminton classes were set to the SPECS model, and after a period of initial adjustment, Department Head Bowers believes the program is a success. In conjunction with the implementation of SPECS, the department has taken steps to provide as many life-time sports as possible, resulting in such classes as conditioning and orienteering. This year, aerobics and jazz dance were offered to students for the first time. Fencing has also been refined. These classes tend to stress individual effort rather than using the traditional team sport approach. Top left: Mr. Ralph Salvati. Center: Mrs, Donna Olson, Miss Debra Ritgirdi, Mr Charles Bowers. These programs, which have been uf. productive for students in past years, have been successfully continued this year, Home Eco- :.ics, Industrial Arts, and the business courses give students the option to elect useful and inter- esting courses outside of the expected mayors. The work study program gives the student an opportunity to receive credit for holding a job outside of school, and independent study offers the student the alternative of working outside the classroom. Recently the occupational education department has begun to allow students to elect business courses earlier in their high school careers. This year, Accounting I has been offered to Freshmen, and next year Stenography will be opened to Sophomores. In addition, two new teachers are work- ing in the Occupational Education department this year: Ms. Joanne Smith in Stenography and Msklune XX'ard in I-Iome Economics. Z' 'f Fine Arts The Fine Arts Department holds classes in Art, Music and Performing Arts such as chorus and concert choir, orchestra, marching and concert band, stage band, and chamber music, As usual, the Fine Arts Department is meeting with much enthusiasm on the part of students and teachers this yearg Arts I, II, and III Cstudio artsj, Art IV fcraftsj, crafts minor and drawing minor, among others, are offered. For music enthusiasts, Music I and Music Theory classes are available. Many changes are planned for next year, including the replacement of the Art History course with a sculpture minor, and the formalizing of art workshop, an independent study program which gives students the opportunity to receive credit for art lessons outside of school. In the music depart- ment, a new class called Contemporary'Music Techniques will be added. It will be a music com- position class using wynthesizers and other un-traditional instruments. This year the Fine Arts Department is in the fourth year of a five-year capital-outlay plan, which involves buying new instruments in order to have a good catalogue of the instruments that most students canlt afford to buy themselves. A new pair of tympanies were bought this year, and hopefully next year we will be receiving new porta-shells. Q-Q K L-I NJ: up Top right: Mr. George Doren. Mr. Barsh, along with the full-time Library Aides and part- time student helpers, has tried to keep the Media Center environment friendly and non-prohibitive while maintaining enough order to keep the peace and to discourage vandalism. In an effort to bridge the gap between the academic world and the actual world, the Media Center has sponsored a series of Reality Workshops or informal lectures delivered by unusual personalities including a psychic and representatives from Alcoholics Anonymous. The former upstairs English office was converted into a multi-purpose room where teachers can offer video presentations to classes, and which is also used for slide production, for other kinds of media production, and for confer- ences. The old game room insures optimum privacy for students who wish to view films and slides independently of the classroom. Overall, the Media Center has once again proven itself ultra-sensitive to changes in students' needs and interests by adapting to account for these changes. Y gl N S 'tar Top left: Mr. Larry Barsh. Later on in the evening, King Louis XIV and Queen Marie Antoinette held court in order to execute one of their unworthy subjects. Naturally, the guillotine was used for the execution. After the poor soul's head was taken away, the King and Queen invited everyone to ear and drink cider with them. ln December, the French Club gave a Christmas party for the Haitian children, who live in Dorchester. French students presented skits, mime, and puppet shows, and then the children played musical chairs or pin the nose on Rudolph. Pere Noel paid the children a visit and gave each one of them presents, which they all enjoyed. The party came to an end as everyone sang French Christmas carols. Many of the activities have been held annually but some were held for the first time this year. To start the year off right, the club ree- nacted the Spanish Inquisition of the fif- teenth century, during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella This reenactment was the club's initiation, annually held to acquire new mem- bers, A few months following the initiation. I-.i Tuna performed in the Little Theatre. This was .1 group of students from Barcelona, Spain, who sang songs from their country, It was a cultural experience held for the first time and most likely will be held again in future years. The club's members had plenty of Christ- mas spirit this year after leaving the Christ- mas party for the Spanish children of Fram- ingham Unlike the past Christmas parties held in the Language reference center, this year's party was held with success in the Framingham Spanish Community Center. In the planning stage for this year, a num- ber of the members will be involved in Inter- national Dessert Night, an annual festivity involving all of the language clubs in order to raise scholarship money, These members will be forming a singing group to serenade the audience with Spanish songs. Also in the planning stage is a trip to the Mexican restau- rant Casa Romero, in Boston. And for the first time, the club is planning to act out a play, or perform some other means of enter- tainment in Spanish, to various grammar schools in order to cultivate an interest of the language in future students of Wfayland High Nduud K .A X x s ,J -N-.-,sa,i....a,a:s 4 Q 4 I 9 I 4 qua sq! 600 lov 00000 sqm: 9.0! 4 as 9 9 0 0 on, O 'von loo, :'OIos, 9loo, on, , 959:45 fig ' u v Q 9460 my 060 909i Ag sooo 4 9500 l v 4 s I Q . 1 :film 1. wg st. hal 2. 6Fn -Q ,, 1-- N -. For example, a medieval feast presented in November by all the Language Clubs was an effort crystalized by the Latin Club. This was the first year the Club dealt with the travels of Aeneas at its longstanding Saturnalian Banquet, an unparalleled social event. Furthermore, the Club's production of Sophocles' ANTIGONE revived tragic drama at the High School. The spaghetti dinner, Intemational Night, and Classics Day were other events organized by the Club. The Club functions as a cohesive unit mainly due to motivation, participation, and leadership. MAXIMUS CAESIUS Francisco Smith is regarded as the Lorenzo Di Medici of modem society. Mr. Smith works assiduously to diffuse westem culture into the Club's members so that his torch for excitement might ignite their flame for activity. This year he found inspired students thronging to the Club. With help from numerous upperclassmen, especially a large group of persevering seniors, the Club initiated over seventy students at its infamous initiation. In all Club activities, members participated, whether creating or . acting, decorating or cooking. The Latin Club remains the unequivocal vanguard at Wayland High. -111: 'n1,1t1:E1-z -f--4'-f- L, ,i ,.,,...,,.. , A -..D-4 .,-,a,,,g,.,-,-3. Y i fl otggk. Now this Imperial Kleager had a friend, Albert Leung, whom he taught two very impor- tant facts of life: don't take homework seriously, and muff around whenever possible, Thus from this friendship emerged the local branch of the National Honorary Misinformed Society or The Albert Leung Club for the Misinformed. The motley clan was smartly organized by advisor ,Ion Rubin into two distinct branches: The Albert Leung Repertory Theater for the Misbegotten, a small circle of friends who perform regular NON SEQUITURS, and The Four Hundred Alliance for Mischievous Miscreants, a coterie dedicated to the fine art of looting and pillaging. The Soci- ety functions as the most inventive, popular, lucrative, lewd, perverse, illicit club at the High School. fSpecial thanks to the Muses for inspirationj N L. Then add the remainder of the day's requirements - innumerable yearbook meetings, know-how in the arts of cropping, stamping, identi- fying, numbering, lay-out, camera setting and loading fhaf J, advertising, selling and, of course, the deadlines. Few individuals could endure such a work day. But Marcel Richer, who has worked here for seventeen solid years, has devoted many long hours in the last three years to the trials and responsibilities of being the Yearbook advisor. He has done a tremendous job. He has been unstint- ing with his time with each staff member, never too busy and always dependable, I-Ie was our inspiration. Without his guidance we would have remained a noisy group of rampant idealists. unable to channel ideas onto paper and into print, Mr. Richer has been remarkably patient, and despite his prediction for car mirrors this lights up, can you believe it?h and metallic covers. he merits hearty thanks from all. Anyone who has the moxie to tell the editor she has messy hair, and constantly to give Taylor'a piece of his mind, deserves commendation. It is with much warmth and love that we pay tribute to you, Mr. Richer. Thank you for tying all the loose ends together and for making what that silly Texan lady dreamed about in southern tones, come true. It was magic, wasn't it? svn 4' . - 1 ' Z . . Every day the members of the Cross-Coun- try team are out running up the hills and through the sand pits, They run mile after mile through rain and snow, Although this yenr's team ended with n 2-4 record, they always worked their hardest and never gave up trying. Cross-Country mnning is one of the most strenuous sports and the team should be commended for its persistent work, The junior Varsity team finished with .1 record of 7-O and should provide for .1 strong squad next year. Combining good shooting with tough rebounding and defense the team put together many exciting wins. Some injuries in the middle of the season hurt the team, but they adjusted extremely well and continued to win games. A few close games during the year could easily have changed the season dramatically for the team. X5C'ayland's final record was good enough to qualify them for the Tech Tour- nament at the end of the season. .Q f'f AEEz-f i Q f,,,, N, .YU1 N yggw 1 X ' PNY MYUNH 5 B 3: 1 490 17,y4?'7Z nl K' if ' x J 'K' Alan-yfll , if 31,42 v , ,N ,J : .... , 44, Lf- N, . . . . 7. wi vw f ' - wx? xg. With a new coach and three disap- pointing years behing them the team went through some changes, and with the changes came improvement. XX'aylan finished fifth in the DCL with a 8-IO-O record. They had many impressive wins, and in each loss they outshot their opponents. The offense was always a threat, scoring as many as eleven goals in one game while the defense always did their best to stop the opponent with many members of the team returning next year Way'land hockey should continue to improve. i X.. in Q . Both factors contributed to Wayland's success, Led by Co- captains Connie Langer and Emil Tanner, the team came breathtakingly close to Concord's first place record. The depth of Wayland's team, in cross country and slalom, rather than any particular stars, gave the team points as well as good spirit. The dedicated slalom team this year practiced much more than it was accustomed to, braving Buzzy's Bump without the benefit of a tow. In general, the future of the Ski Team looks bright. In the Back: Mr. Stather, Advisor, Remember her? During two of our most formative years CFreshman and Sophomorej Ms. Delairio was advisor to the Class of 1977. Often she went above and beyond the normal duties of a class advisor. She endured being squirted with a garden hose, baking eighty pounds of macaroni and various other tasks that only an advisor to the Class of 1977 would be called upon todo! She combined the role of teacher, advisor, and friend into one and she made every activity a little more fun and a little more special. Ms. Delairio moved to Michigan after our Sophomore year to develop other talents and Michigan's gain was our loss, For all she did for our class and for the many memories she left with us, the Class of 1977 sincerely thanks her. Ms. Delairio is no longer with us in person. but in spirit she has never left, lil .W --1 af f Walk into the Math office this year, and immediately something seems different. Something is missing - a bright hello, a friendly smile, a warm laugh. Mrs, Mabardy may no longer be physically with us at Wayland High, but her presence is felt in many other ways. For three years, she guided us with a steady yet gentle hand, unselfishly devoting herself to the success of the class, inspiring us with a desire to Work hard for ourselves. From our first stationery sale to the prom, Ivirs. Mabardy was always there when we needed her, directing but not driv- ing us, firm but not overbearing. Not satisfied just to concern herself with a class, she took a special interest in us as individuals, helping us with personal problems - school, prom dates, parents, love lives for lack thereofj - always genuinely concemed and gently reassuring. Though presently busy raising her son, Christopher Gabriel, with hus- band Phil, Mrs. Mabardy continues to exhibit her concern for the class, attending class activities and staying in touch with many 77ers. It is said, and rightly so, that our class is one of the best to pass through Wayland High and there is no denying the important part Mrs. Mabardy has played in shaping our success. It is with sincere appreciation, gratitude and love that we, the class of 1977, thank you, Mrs, Mab, and wish you all the happiness you deserve in your new career. 5? E ff:-x :Zi-. It may reach, like widening ripples, Down a long eternity. joseph Norris When o person selflessly gives to others, he is a friend to all. During the past year, Mr. Stather has been more than a friend, not only giving us his support and time, but also the patient giidance only a thoughtful advisor can provide. Without dominating us, he has continually led us toward our goals, clarifying them when they have been clouded by our inexperience or idealism, and reinforcing them when our faith has been shaken by disappointments. Our Senior year, as all Senior years, has been filled with the usual dances, the fund drives and the Saturday concession stand, but has also been marked by the poignant moments of growing up amidst the elation, worry, and sadness of leaving a familiar part of life. We always will remember the inspiration and guidance Mr. Stather has given to us.
