DEDICATION Mr. Clement B. Fenton taught Latin and English at Wayland Junior High School from 1962 to 1968. He was undoubtedly one of the finest teachers in the school system, and was the prototype of a Latin teacher at an English boy's boarding school. His manner was alternately forbidding and hilarious - one shuddered at his feigned wrath but simultaneously giggled uncontrollably at his antics. One felt enoromus respect for the in- telligence, ability, and compassion of this man. He once told us, Do you know what my parents named me? fHe was glaring ferociously at us with blazing eyesj Do you want to know what they named me? CLEMENT!! That means kindness! Qwhich statement he punctu- ated with his Mephistopholean snicker.j Ironically, Mr. Fenton was exception- ally kind, but he tempered his kindness with a fearsome humor. Mr, Fenton added an irreplaceable, uneraseable texture to our not- so-scholarly existence. Our reminiscences retain an incredible vividness: CAAASTRA - What's that? Like Castro Convertibles? It's CAHSTRA, not CAAASTRA! Christmas! Someday, someday, when you're home watching Fred Flintstone, Cas he draws caricatures across the boardj, it will come to you! You'll cry, 'I understand the perfect system of tenses!' TERGUM, - I, NYEWTERR!, NOT NOOTER - lT'S NYEWTERR! IT HAS A LONG MARK! las he draws a chalk line around the entire room - drawing along doors, windows, and bulletin boardsj. MISTER KOCH, you will make a sign, three inches in diameter which will read, 'tempus fugit', 'time fIies', and you will no longer watch the clock - we have Mr. Faigen for that. IRon Faigen's iob consisted of bellowing, Ignoscas Magister, tempus est , Excuse me sir, it is time', two minutes before the end of the period, regardless of what was going on.j Troiani cum Graecis multo annos bellum gesserunt-our first translation - The Troians waged war for many years with the Greeks. Don't you dare yawn in my class, Miss Ames!! You will write me an essay, to be passed in tomorrow, explaining the physical phenomenon of the yawn. Do you know why one yawns? Do you? it's due to lack of oxygen - so BREATHE, Christmas!! Alright, inhale! Recite! IThe class in breathless chorus hurriedly began to recite the whole declension of HIC, HAEC, HOC, trying not to breathe - but someone always had to take an illegal gasp.j Stop! Exhale! Somebody was breathing! Did I say you could breathe? Christmas! Attention, INHALEI RECITE! IAII the while, he was pacing fiercely around the room - panting ferociously and wielding his enormous yardstick, which he occasionally allowed to crash to the floor with frightening loudness. Then he took his station at the front of the room at his podium - and still breathing fiendishly, pushed his way towards the back of the room - like an angry bulldozer, disregarding all the desks, books, students, and chairs in his way.l You go home after school and you say to yourself, 'I should do my Latin homework'. You should do your Latin homework and you want to do your homework and you have to do your homework, but you don't do your homework. In the spring, choruses of Gaudeamus Igitur wafted tunelessly out of room five - as always Mr. Fenton was frenetically and hilariously directing. A host of memories flood our minds as we think back on our Junior High School days. Like parts in a puzzle they fall into place and a picture of joy emerges. It is with ioy in our hearts now that we dedicate this book to a man who touched our lives and made a difference.
