We hope that this REFLECTOR will bring back many memories for the students, from their first frightening and exciting days as Freshman to their triumphant Senior year, with its approaching glory of graduation. At the same time we see this as a tribute to the ad- ministration, the faculty, and all others responsible for making our school the liveable, sometimes almost lovable, place it is. After half a year of planning, re-planning, running around, tears, and work, we have come to feel that this REFLECTOR is perhaps one of the most creative yearbooks ever to be produced at Wayland High. So with much pleasure, we give to you the REFLECTOR. RAYMOND ALEXAND ...TGAFRIE Well, I suppose I was getting into the groove-out in front with a stiff wind in my face, the course ahead clear of traffic, the less spirited crowd lagging behind me. This, the tedium of the track, running hard and gasping, gulping in the breeze, foot-sore and brain-fagged-with no end in sight and the be- ginning too far back and too painful to recall. But a runner must run: it is his only lot. Then from somewhere, or perhaps out of nowhere, a new figure pulls up alongside me-half-grinning, and with a glint of magic in the eye. Well, now things start picking up. What is this? . . . I no longer plod along the course, heavy with exhaustion, like some ancient plowman behind a yoke of hard study, aimlessly turning the sod into furrows . . . the two of us are borne almost off the ground and carried away by new and unknown forces of acceleration, exhilaration. Flying over the earth now, with laughter in our straining lungs, eyes watering wind-blown tears, and every once in a while, just for spite, a clap of the hands-Lord, this is a new sort of race! For two years, side by side the both of us fly along, skimming over the cindered track. Whenever needed, this new-found friend of mine was al- ways ready and willing to drop back and run with some other member of our team, always there to call out an encouraging word, always ready to befriend a teammate. And gradually, this road I had traveled took on a definite direction. At the beginning of the eleventh lap, my friend pulls out and takes the lead-I do not fear, my friend has made it a good race and there are yet almost two laps to go. Oh what a thing of beauty it is-to soar along, skimming over the path, the Past retreating from sight while Destiny, onrush- ing, looms up before me, leaning into the curves, fleeing over the earth with the wind-song in my ears and the silent landscape slipping by. And my friend, always there just before me as we float along the downgrades, strain on the upgrades, and squeeze through the corners-my friend sets my pace, my friend's confidence encourages me, I follow the path of my friend. And now we come into the final stretch, the end in sight and a new ioy is mine. I'm going to make it. I am caught up and mastered by this surging toward the promise of Success, alive and rampant, speeding, exultant, through light of sun and moon. Now my friend does a strange thing, slipping back and away, with a wink and a grin, saying quietly, It's your race, and the lead is mine. Next thing I know, there's a happily beaming man before me, pumping my hand. In the other hand I hold a diploma. Quite suddenly the race is over-the prize is won. I feel the slap of a hand on my back. I feel the presence of my friend behind me, no doubt smiling, still flushed with the heat of the race, and anxious to congratulate me. I turn, the team turns, to thank this true friend-Mrs. Alexander. Epitomizing the height of personal interest and encouragement, overflow- ing with integrity and diligence, tempered with firmness, blessed with percep- tion, and aglow with humor-it is these qualities which have made so valu- able your guidance and direction throughout our high school experience. You have graciously and selflessly devoted your efforts to our welfare, we can hope but only to begin to show our gratitude by dedicating this, our yearbook, to you. And we do this not only gratefully, but humbly . . . for we wish to reflect the humble yet energetic spirit with which you labored in our behalf. May this book become the long standing record of your de- votion, as well as our achievements. Thank you, Mrs. Alexander. Sincerely, The Class of I968 4? Graduation represents another milestone among the many you will experi- ence in your total life span. It is a time for looking backward and for looking forward. If you will spend but a few moments in comparing or contrasting the kind of persons you were, and the kind of world in which you lived when you en- tered Wayland High School with your present selves and the world of to- day, perhaps you might feel as Charles Dickens did when he wrote: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. But in your age might it not seem as if he were contemplating affluent America, with its deepest pockets of poverty, educated America, dropping out one million of its youth each year, America searching for meaning, but deserting society through drugs, America progressing towards ecumenism, amidst racial iniustice, America seeking peace, as it expands its nuclear arsenal. This is the life style in which you are coming of age. It is an exciting age filled with unlimited opportunities and awesome responsibilities. As we have walked the path of education together, l have come to feel that you will accept the challenges of your times and improve the conditions in which you live, that you will reexamine the assumptions of the past and formulate new assumptions to advance society, that you will close the gap between what Americans believe and what they practice. The class, led by a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and a tree-lance educational writer, teacher and consultant fAnne Sexton and Robert Clawsonj, is a non-directive session with little pre-supposed except that students are encouraged to speak and write of things dear to them, and to express these things in concrete terms. The main point of focus involves students in dealing seriously with what they think is important. The class is, therefore, a written and oral dialogue about the milieu and the relationships of the teacher and the student. Mrs. Sexton has helped the members of her class to learn that for which she is most well-knowny to express with strength, and clarity, and candor their feelings about their individual lives and works. Like her poetry, it has demanded of the students immediate response and personal involvement, and it has resulted in the same deep sense of fulfill- ment as her poems. And with it all has come the realization that the quest for meaning and identity in the world is not on easy endeavor, but a worthy one-an intense experience. ,.. 1. ',,. - ff- - - 5. It sounds like a war. Have you smelled the field house yet? Woods Hole-it was supposed to be academic! We never really learned the difference between R-11 and R-48, nor did we manage to memorize our schedules, but by November we were forever part of Wayland High. With the leadership of our president, Holly Roehrig, and the other officers, Pam Lewis, Cvice-presidentig Steve Kendall, Ctreasurerjp and Suzie Salomon, fsecretaryb, we settled into the task of planning our class activities. These consisted of two dances: Swiss Chalet and Spring Fever. We were the first freshmen who ever made money on a dance. As far as sports went, our Freshmen football team was first in the league. The Basketball team held its own. We even had a few boys who made the J.V. team. Although reading Shakespeare was a new experience, we finally completed the first year. September, 1965 My curfew is 11:30 now. Being a Sophomore is nothing. Well-at least I'm not a freshman. We have to dissect a what?! Richard Cavour for President! Who spiked the punch? Better get it out of here. Mr. McGill is next in line. Again it took a while to get organized, but by the end of September we did it. Mrs. Stafford took over as our advisor. Our class was led by president Steve Kendall, vice-president Nancy Malkin, treasurer Dennis Morgan, and secretary Jack Hessian. Again we held two dances, but our major endeavor was extremely exciting. We had adopted a Vietnamese orphanage at the cost of S200 a year. This led to new activities such as bake sales and car washes to finance our proiect. We also demolished the Christian Science Monitor building. On the gridiron, our boys had a record of four wins and two losses. In basketball we managed nine wins and nine losses. September, 1966 Chemistry Rule -9651: If you don't know what it is, taste it. 'Do we really have to read Shakespeare again? 'Now they tell me I have to go college. What are P.S.A.T.'s? Who do you think will be queen? You mean I'm an upperclassmen? Even though we did have to struggle through Shakespeare again, our main task was creating a first-rate prom. Under the guidance of president Nancy Malkin, vice-president Kevin Burke, treasurer Skip Halpern, and secretary Paul Gravina, we set our- selves to this iob. First, we secured permission to hold the prom at the Maridor. Then with the help of our prom chairman, Phoebe Smith, we decided on CastiIian Courtyard as a theme. Lynne Harrison was our queen . In her court were Nancy Malkin, Valery Ferreira, Shelley Freeman, Beth Fricke, Pam Rich, and Ann Wesley. But the prom was not our only activity. We produced our I I first play, a re-creation of the traditional Cinderella , complete with Prince Charming on a motorcycle. It was an original play and we won the award for the best play. Sports took on new importance, with our boys now on the varsity squads. The football season was good, with a record of eight wins and one loss. Basketball was --. Hockey was great, with a record of 10-2-2. In June our dreams were realized at a Senior Take-over Day breakfast. September, 1967 Study halls-you study in there?! The Yearbook-Where do we start? You mean I looked like that three years ago?! What happens if you don't write a thesis? We're number 1!!! Gee, filling out our applications is fun. We weren't all sure that we could stand one more year. But the class was unified, and we set out to be the best Senior class ever under the leadership of president Nancy Malkin, vice- president Skip Halpern, treasurer Dennis Morgan, and secretary Jane Beniamin. We attained the Senior privileges we wanted, right down to the last quarter that the Coke machine wouldn't change. Miniskirts and pants were acceptable dress for the first time. We had several projects fbesides graduatingi. Our Senior play was Harvey. The white rabbit became a hero. We won a great deal of applause from the Winter Week production of Mad Breakfast. Our awards for this performance were best play, best actress and best actor. Our prom was another task at hand. Besides class proiects, we had our school studies, including a laugh-in sponsored by the English department, and the thesis to write. Our senior year also meant new responsibilities and a realization that we would soon be adults. Courses such as Social Science helped us to realize what these would be. Last but not least we had an extremely successful year in sports. Our football team was the sole possessor of the number one place in the state. One of the most thrilling victories was the Weston game. We won 6-O. Basketball-well, uh-. Hockey was great and we were in the Eastern Hockey Tourney. Indoor Track tied with Weston for first place and finished third in the state. The Wrestling Team was sixth in the state. This greatly successful year helped in increasing the school spirit. March, 1968 ll ll Senior White Sock Day is tomorrow. Only 59 more days. How will we ever pay for the yearbook? Do we have to have a prom? I haven't done any work since Mid-years. As the college acceptances start to come in, our futures are beginning to take shape. We still have a prom to produce and graduation week to face, yet most of us now look beyond our high school years. But no matter where we go from here, Way- land High School has taken a great part in shaping our lives. Thank you for all you have given us. Good luck, Class of '68 The Reflector Staff 4 I Last ill and Testament We, the illustrious class of nineteen hundred and sixty-eight, being of sound mind and body, do hereby bestow and bequeath the following: Article I To Mrs. A. we leave 700 donuts and one recording ot Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett. Though it was a time to relax a bit, the Class of '68 had been for from idle in preparing for it. Probably the largest and most attractive event consisted of the two nights dedicated to the Inter- Class Play Competition. We were ready. A group of seven or eight students under the supervision of class advisor, Mrs. Alexander, collaborated in the writing of a comic spoof of Cinderella. The play and the players were exhaustively well rehearsed under the guidance of director Betsy Nagle, and the production was finally staged. What with, amongst other antics, Tom Nylund in combat boots playing Cinderella's sister, Dave Bicchieri in pink tights and leotards as the Fairy Godmother, plus the pumpkin coach being replaced by a motorbike being driven around on stage-it was little wonder that the production stood an easy number one in audience appeal. Other members of the cast were Beth Fricke, Jim Graham, Nancy Malkin, Steve Rizzo, Dennis Morgan, Dave Jones, Maureen O'Reilly, Jim Wood, and the chorus: Pam Maxwell, Diane Carlson, Dave Osborn, Pam Neill, Steve Crowley, Kevin Burke, Pam Knaack, John Silan, and Skip Halpern. Despite jobs well done by all other classes, we as Juniors tied for first place with the Freshmen for their production of The Lottery. A MAD BREAKFAST 5 1. 522 5 l 'W 5-2 , , S3-S E i is 1 Atl, X A, Our performance in the lnter-Class Play Competition as Seniors much re- sembled that of the year before. The play was again a comedy of a most highly entertaining category, and the production was equally as excellent. Once again also, the players worked under the proven direction ot Betsy Nagle. And this year, when the judges had finished their deliberation, the Class of '68 was in sole possession of first place and, in addition, the awards for best actor and best actress both went to seniors-.lim Wood and Pam Rich, respectively. But there is some thing more to be said than this glittering, spotlighted listing of award winners. Our productions in both our junior and senior years exhibited not only audience appeal, but upon closer examination it could be seen that they demonstrated a certain pace and uncanny confidence, not only verve but polish, and above all, flexibility. Credit must also go to the unseen helpers and supporters led by Pam Neill and Pat Neill. Members of the cast were: Debbie DeRoche, Scott Rossborough, Leslie Siegel, Kathy Man- gan, Jim Graham, .lim Wood, Pam Rich, Nancy Malkin, Beth Fricke, and Dave Osborn. , V . . f -.E ' A i!ia-L5 -lu Lrg'-ll' li' ' ' K lj E Rabbit stew for dinner For the production of their Senior Play, the Class of T968 selected Mary Chase's irreverent yet light-hearted Harvey. Good solid performances were turned in by all members of the cast, the players, in turn, were supported by an expectably efficient stage crew. Mr. Barry Groweof the English Department directed, while our own class advisor, Mrs. Alexander, served as production manager. Dealing with the somewhat psychotic yet illustrious adventures of one Elwood P. Dowd and his invisible companion Harvey, the play provided relaxing fun for the audience and an oppor- tunity for members of the senior class to display their dramatic talents. Though Time may see the Class of T968 fade into archaic oblivion, there is little doubt of the fact that the Little Theater will be eternally haunted by the ethereal form of Harvey, the six-foot rabbit. ..... -- ' 1 I ' - ' ,.....-.-- What's that, Nance? Sansone. Over the years Wayland High School has produced some outstanding athletes and many outstanding football teams. The boys who played for the 1967 team can be very proud that they upheld the Wayland tradition by winning both The Dual County League Title and The State Class D Championship. But even if these boys had not won honors, they would have earned the respect and love of the coaches, for this team was a first- rate outfit in every way. lt was made up of mentally and physically tough individuals, players with an intense desire to do their best at all times, young men who know that the effort a person makes is the real measure of his success. It is the hope of each coach that the outstanding qualities exhibited by these boys week after week of the season will show up again when they deal with the challenges of their individual futures and the future of the world they will live in. u'3'- Hi' .1 J 4 Coach Walker Coach Moore Coach Witten Coach Moyer Coach Devine .5 ? g scones A 'io We ' Acton-Boxboro 22 1 Westwood 32 V ' F Lynntield . . . . 30 ' - Tewksbury 24 - - Ashland . . 22 A Q, ' ' Milford .. 36 'I r-'- ug .
