Although we all are in one small world and looking toward interplanetary travel, we must ever keep our feet firmly planted on the ground. Never frown at your neighbor's differences. This complex life requires many types of people. No individual has the ability to absorb all the answers to all the questions in a lifetime. Every group has to have a combination of types and personalities which produce a unit to operate in harmony. Our school has proven to have diverse scholars and teachers all aiming at a single goal. In life now and in our future. this world, geo- graphic, political and spiritual. will at times seem to be difficult, maybe even senseless, nevertheless patience with strength of mind and body always prevails. When you look through this REFLECTOR, remember Reflector means mirror. A mirror can only reveal the present: it's up to the vision in the glass to shape the image of the future. Hoping you have enjoyed a happy past, praying for your pleasant future, we now present a graphic mirror of today. C0 TET Administration ,..... ....... Faculty ............. Seniors ................ Much of our progress, our ideals, and our values are the result of the lives you have lived here. Your leadership is valued. It should continue to be reflected in outstanding work wherever you may be. Good luck and the best of everything for each of you. TH Tlll 4 WILLIAM M. GRIFFIN Principal Congratulations to the Class of 1956. You all may take a deep satisfaction in what you have accomplished, but do not be satisfied. Let this graduation be the beginning of greater achieve- ments. Strive always to place service above self, and to develop an awareness of your responsibilities to society. Your community will then receive the benefit of a thoughtful, participating citizen. May success continue to crown your endeavors. IAMES E. It was a hard struggle but the enjoyment that will be received from the book in the years to come will be worth the eiiort. Iust think of the number oi times we will look through the yearbook and recall all the exciting events and happy times we had during our high-school days. That Fall we elected Gerald Humphrey, Presi- dent: Bruce King, Vice-President: Paul Bradley, Treasurer: and Mary lane Fabisak, Secretary. Shirley May and Bruce King carried our criti- cisms and suggestions to Student Council. The unusual thing about this election was that all the candidates elected ran on the same ticket, the Studocrats. The new-comers to our class were Cynthia Iohnson and Gordon Gullage, In the Fall of '52 we were represented on the football field by Doug Hatfield, Iohn Thorbum, Spike Marotte, Ronny Houghton, Paul Bradley, Fred Tassinari and Robert Sandwell, with Paul Zayotti as the manager. Our girls went for field hockey in a big way. Carol Archer, Carol Lindbohm, Claire Witzell, and Agnes Houston helped us to have a better than .500 average. Will you ever forget Initiation Day? We had tea bags hanging from our ears and old shoes around our necks. Gerald Humphrey and Iudy Simoni were awarded prizes for being the fun- niest-looking Freshmen. Ioan Lizotte, Iudy Simoni, and Betsy Tanger were the actresses of our class, participating in the Dramatics Club. The Wayland Whispers received many new members from the Freshmen class. Those in- cluded were Kathleen Andrews, Agnes Houston, Nancy Tarr, Betsy Tanger. Mary lane Fabisak, Barbara Beal, Ioan Tewksbury, Iudy Simoni, Iohn MacKeen, Eileen Bresse, and loan Lizotte. Many of the Freshmen eagerly helped in the Library Club. A few of the members were Carol DeWolfe, Mary lane F abisak, Eileen Bresse, loan Tewksbury, Marilyn Heizmann, and Maryann Smith. Paul Zayotti, Paul Bradley, and Fred Tassinari had places on the I. V. basketball squad. The girls had their own basketball team, on which most of the girls played. Iohn Thorbum and Fred Tassinari played on the baseball team while Carol Lindbohm and Marilyn Dusseault played on the girls softball team that spring. When final exams were over, we welcomed summer vacation bringing a successful Fresh- men year to a close. In the Fall of '53 we returned to the Halls of Wayland High to continue our learning. To our class we welcomed Carol Bucknam and Barbara Roche. Like the year before we started off with class elections: Iim Merikangas, President: Cynthia Iohnson, Vice-President: Ianet Shepard, Secre- tary: and Mary lane Fabisak, Treasurer. Also ludy Simoni and Betsy Tanger were the Student Council members. Our football stars were Iohn Thorburn, Gordon Gullage, Gerald Humphrey, Donald Graves, Spike Marotte, and Fred Tassinari, with ever faithful Paul Zayotti as manager. The girls had a fair field hockey season with Claire Witzell, Carol Lindbohm, Carol Archer, Rita Brosseau, Mary lane Fabisak, Ioan Lizotte, and Agnes Houston. Our great social event of the year, a record hop with Stan Richards and guest Ian Strickland, turned out to be a tremendous success. Our class had many of the highest scorers on the basketball team, Paul Zayotti, Fred Tassinari, Paul Bradley, Spike Marotte, and Iohn Thorburn. To root our boys on we elected Rachel Wheelock and Maryann Smith to the cheerleading squad. When our girls formed their basketball team for the year: Carol Lindbohm, Rita Brosseau, Claire Witzell, Marilyn Dusseault, Carol Archer, Ioan Lizotte, Ianet Shepard, Betsy Tanger, Agnes Houston and Kathleen Andrews participated. The Spring came again and out for baseball were Iohn Thorbum, Paul Bradley, Paul Zayotti, and Fred Tassinari, while Maryann Smith, Carol Archer, Carol Dyer, and Ioan Lizotte supplied Wayland High with another successful season on the softball diamond. With this came the end of the Sophomore year. With the Fall of '54 we, the Iuniors, elected Barbara Roche, our first girl-President. The other officers were as follows: Ianet Shepard, Vice- President: Carolyn LeDrew, Secretary: and Agnes Houston, Treasurer. This time we called upon Ianet Shepard, Iudy Simoni, and Barbara Roche to represent us in Student Council. The new-comers that year were Paul Senory, Carole Haugh, Diane Dudgeon, Beth Cusumano, and Francine Schiavone. Spike Marotte, Buster Keating, Paul Senory, Gerald Humphrey, Ronnie Houghton, Fred Tassinari, Paul Bradley, and Iohn Thorburn pushed the football squad to a record of six wins and one loss. The girls elected Agnes Houston captain of the Varsity Field Hockey team. Her fellow team- mates were Carol Dyer, Claire Witzell, Rita Brosseau, Mary lane Fabisak, Ioan Lizotte. Eileen Bresse, Carol Archer, and Kathleen Andrews. We were very proud of the nine girls elected to the National Honor Society, the highest pos- sible honor conferred upon anyone in high school. Congratulations to Kathleen Andrews, Iudy Simoni, Rita Brosseau, Ioan Lizotte, Carolyn LeDrew, Barbara Roche, Mary lane Fabisak, Eileen Bresse and Agnes Houston. Iohn Thorburn, Spike Marotte, Fred Tassinari and Paul Bradley were the four juniors on the basketball squad. Again this year many girls showed up for basketball. Agnes Houston, Claire Witzell, Mary Iane Fabisak, Ioan Lizotte, Carol Archer, Marilyn Dusseault, Carol Lindbohm. and Kathleen Andrews were the enthusiastic players. We had the most successful Iunior Prom in the history of Wayland High School. Our class President, Barbara Roche. was chosen Queen with Rita Brosseau, Beth Cusumano and Ioan Tewksbury in the court. Paul Senory, Fred Tassinari, Iohn Thorburn, and Paul Bradley helped our team to have a fairly good season on the baseball diamond. Our girls, Carol Lindbohm, Ioan Lizotte, Nancy McEnroy, Carolyn LeDrew, Carol Dyer, Ioan Tewksbury, Maryann Smith, Marilyn Dusseault, and Claire Witzell, beat Sudbury in one of the better softball games of the season. Marilyn Hiezmann was the manager. Paul Senory and Iudy Simoni were elected to represent us at Boys' and Girls' State for a week during the summer. Iohn MacKeen brought honor to our class by placing third in the Math Contest conducted by Mr. Boothroyd. Also he was given the Harvard Award for the highest marking junior boy. Carole Haugh and Paul Senory led the Class of '55 down the aisle at graduation, thus bring- ing our junior year to a close. We have finally reached our destination. We are THE SENIORS! Again this year we had three new-comers to our class. They were Nathalie Baker. lim Berry, and the return of Barbara Beal. We have been able to hold our heads high under the guiding hand of our class officers. Paul Senory, President: Paul Bradley, Vice- President: Mary lane Fabisak. Secretary: and Agnes Houston, Treasurer. Once again our Stu- dent Council representatives were all girls, Iudy Simoni, Ianet Shepard, Barbara Roche, and Carolyn LeDrew. Paul Senory, the President, was later appointed to Student Council. Even though the opening of school was de- layed, our football squad started practice under the leadership of captains, Spike Marotte, and Fred Tassinari. Other senior squad members were lohn Thorburn, Ronny Houghton, Paul Bradley, Paul Senory, and Buster Keating. After beating Weston by a score of 18-0 in the final game of the season, we held our annual football dance. Barbara Wilbur and many other seniors were busy helping with decorations. The dance was spotlighted by an enormous cake, beauti- fully decorated with all the names of the players, coaches, and managers, made by Kathleen Andrews and Agnes Houston. Let's not forget our field hockey team. This year under the leadership of Captain Ioan Lizotte, the girls surpassed last year's record and did not win a game. The following girls were on the team just the same: Rita Brosseau, Eileen Bresse, Claire Witzell, Carol Archer, Carol Dyer, Agnes Houston, and Kathleen Andrews. Mary lane Fabisak and Marilyn Heizmann were the managers. Early this fall Paul Senory and Barbara Roche were elected co-editors of the Yearbook with Rita Brosseau, Business Manager. For the second time in the history of Wayland High we conducted a record poll on WHDH's Boston Ballroom. Representing our school were Fred Tassinari. Paul Senory, Eileen Bresse, and Carol Dyer. By the way the top tune was Six- teen Tons. After winning the Dual County League Cham- pionship, our magnificent team, composed of Spike Marotte, Iohn Thorburn, and Co-captains, Paul Bradley and Fred Tassinari, journied to Natick for the first of the Tech. Tourney games. In the quarter finals we outwitted Sacred Heart of Weymouth 47-38. The next week in the semi- finals we tromped over East Bridgewater 60-49. Bridgewater beat us by a close margin in the finals, but still our basketball team will go dovsm in the history of the school. Not to be outmatched by the boys the girls continued their record on the basketball court by not winning a game. This fabulous record was upheld by Ianet Shepard, Claire Witzell, Marilyn Dusseault, Ioan Lizotte, Agnes Houston, and our Co-captains Carol Lindbohm and Carol Archer. Carolyn LeDrew and Kathleen Andrews were the managers. Eileen Bresse was elected our DAR good citi- zen and also our representative at Student Government Day, two very great honors. For the second time in Wayland High a boy was chosen for DAR: Fred Tassinari had the honor. Three members of our class were received into the National Honor Society. Everyone was very proud of Carol Archer, Marilyn Heizmann, and john MacKeen. ln the spring we put on a comedy call Young April, which was a tremendous success. We shall never forget all the trouble Mr. Taylor and Miss Gilmore went to for us. The leads were Catherine Regan, Paul Bradley, Iohn Lizotte, Bob Keefe, Carole Haugh. Spike Marotte and Mary lane Fabisak. Other members of the cast were Kathleen Andrews, Ianet Shepard, Iudy Simoni, Iohn Thorburn, Paul Senory, Ronny Houghton, Carolyn LeDrew, and Beth Cusumano. The back stage help was Nathalie Baker and Agnes Houston and the usherettes were Carol Archer, Barbara Beal, Rita Brosseau, Ioan Tewksbury, Rae Wheelock, and Claire Witzell, The following day we had the Sports Banquet. After a hearty meal the awards and jackets were given out. Paul Senory and Carol Lindbohm worthily were given the Babe Ruth Good Sports- manship Award while Fred Tassinari deservingly received the W.H.S. Best Athlete Award. Fifteen girls and seven boys got jackets. We, seniors will always be remembered for our outstanding selling ability. The following boys practiced this in Way-Co: Mickey Gladu, Bruce King, Buster Keating, Spike Marotte, Iohn Laughlin, and Ronny Houghton. Again this year Iohn MacKeen bestowed hon- ors on our class by placing first in the math test conducted by Mr. Demeo. He also came in sec- ond in Massachusetts in the UN Scholarship. He was given S50 and the honor of shaking the Governor's hand. For the first time in Wayland we participated in the state wide Science Fair. The Student Council is the sole student governing body. Its members. from every class in the high school, are elected by their classmates. The Student Council is the voice of the students. Its responsibility is to convey the wishes of the student body to the faculty. Its object is to prepare and educate the students in the iob of selt-governing. The Council helps to further a spirit ot cooperation throughout the school. This year the Council visited neighboring high schools to better understand how their Councils function. For the third consecutive year the Council has aided the Kiwanis Club with a Halloween Party. It has sponsored a paper drive. paid assemblies and after-school candy selling. This year the Constitution was amended to allow the Presidents of each class to become Student Council members. Front Row: I. Simoni, I.. Cherry, D. Herland, I. Simoni, I. Houghton. C. LeDrew, D. This year the School's Driver Education Course has increased immensely. The high school has at its convenience a 1956 Chevrolet through the cour- tesy of Cochituate Motors. So far approximately 300 students have received their license through this program. In order to receive their license the student must have class room instruction and behind the wheel experience. The students of Wayland are very fortunate to have cr Driver Education Program tree, and every- one is waiting patiently for his tum at the wheel. Way-co is our school store. organized and sup- ported by the Commercial Law and Salesmanship classes. Pupils who are interested. buy shares of stock in the store which sells pencils, erasers. rulers, ink. book covers. and gym equipment to the entire school. At the end of the school year, inventory is taken and the remaining supplies are tumed over to the school. Then the profit is figured and dividends are paid to the stockholders. Every pupil is proud and happy to receive his dividend, gained by his cooper- ation and support. Left to right: Mr. Gladu. B. King. I. Laughlin. R. Marotte, P. Gladu, P. Keating. R. Houghton. Each year. at the termination of the first semester. the faculty selects those members of the junior and senior classes. who having attended Wayland High School for a minimum of one year. best exemplify those four requisites. A candidate's scholastic average must be B or better for his entire school program. At the impressive induction ceremony held each spring. those students elected to the National Honor Society receive pins and certificates as tokens of membership. After the induction, parents and friends of members were guests at a breakfast held in the seminar room. In the evening. the Parent-Teacher Association provided a most enjoyable banquet at the historic Wayside Inn for the members. Many parents and friends attended. This year members of the National Honor Society headed a drive to collect good used toys to be sent to a children's polio clinic in Fall River. Many articles were collected which will provide hours of enjoyment for the patients who attend the clinic.
