We began with a vision, however ideal, and built and rebuilt it until it became real. After months of hard work and frustration we begin to see a final form, a history of a school year. To us a special year, our last year, our Senior year. And in retrospect, we begin to real- ize that we will better remember this year—for we helped write this yearbook we present to you. 7 10 12 17 MR. C. LEROY HURLBUT Wayland Central School has been, throughout its existence, the center of activity for the many hundreds of students who have walked in and out of its doors. For more than thirty of these years, until his retirement in the late summer of 1974, Mr. Hurlbut was the Supervising Principal of Wayland Central, the guiding force behind the growth of our fine educational institution. For all of us who are about to leave WCS, we know that what we are and what we may become is, in great part, due to our experiences and growth at WCS and the people who made it possible. The Yearbook Staff and the Class of 1975 would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks to Mr. C. LeRoy Hurlbut-a fine administrator and friend. 20 2! BOCES The Mt. Morris Charles G. May Occupational Center exists to serve all the schools in Livings- ton County by offering programs which the local schools cannot make available because of finances or the lack of enough students to make such programs feasible. By drawing from the county as a whole, this B.O.C.E.S. Center can offer a wide variety of courses aimed primarily at providing vocational training and experience. About 75 students from Wayland Central spend a half day in Mt. Morris, Seniors in the morning and Juniors in the afternoon, while attending the local school the remaining half day com- pleting their required subjects. Most vocational training courses are two years in length and pro- vide attending students with a subject major re- quired for graduation from W.C.S. Seniors are also placed in part-time work situations within the school or community for practical experi- ence. The major goal of the B.O.C.E.S. program is to allow and prepare graduating Seniors the opportunity to continue their vocational train- ing at the college level or possess the skills to find rewarding work careers. 39 FINE ARTS COUNCIL The Fine Arts Council continued this year to present programs for the Wayland area’s involve- ment and enjoyment of the creative arts. During the last spring’s Fine Arts Festival, the “FAC” brought Gap Mangione and his versatile group to Wayland for a truly fabulous professional perform- ance. During the Fall season, the Dixieland Ramblers returned for an encore performance. Everyone agreed they were even better the second time. This year the Council initiated a new program, The Faculty Recital, which, judging from its acclaims, might become a yearly tradition at WCS. Mr. Little showed how the flute could be a solo instrument and WOW could he play that flute. Mr. Thomas and Ms. Westlake showed that they can do more than just critique their student’s work with a fine art show. Two new faculty members demonstrated their expressive talents: Ms. Hermanson at the piano and Mr. Fedorchuk with folk dances. The recital concluded with the stun- ning performances of Ms. Shappee as “Doris” and Mr. Weidentan as “Felix” in an act from “The Owl and the Pussycat.” BACK ROW, Left to Right: W. Goss, L. ART AND PHOTO CLUB The Art and Photo Club, a new organization at Wayland Central, was formed for students in- terested in learning basic art and photographic skills. Meeting one evening a week under the tutelage of Mr. Thomas, these students both discussed and practiced the commercial tech- niques of both art and photography. The Club brought in reference sources from the community who were specialists in certain areas which were being studied. They spent one Saturday at a professional photography studio in Dansville gaining practical experience in photography as a business. All members of the group felt they gained additional insights into the fields of art and photography as mem- bers in this organization. BACK ROW, Left to Right: H. Jones, B. Jones, B. Gonyea, C. The Deutscher Verein had the added pleasure of having a German girl, Karoline, as a friend. Both clubs have gone with Mrs. Jablonski to Rochester, where the French 3 class saw a theatrical troup from Paris present a play by Ionesco, and the German classes watched Mummenschanz, a Swiss mime group. The clubs met together for their annual Carnaval party, held this year on Rosenmon- tag. Joined by new members from the first year classes, they ate, put on skits, ate, sang, ate, danced folk dances, and ate. An added highlight of the evening came when Mr. Fedorchuk joined the dancers to show them other folk dance steps. For the Fair, Presidents Sue Conrad and Judy Price again had their clubs cooperate on one booth, the Patisserie-Backerei, to sell delicious baked goods. BACK ROW, Left to Right: P. Luther, M. Following the most successful and hilarious production of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS pre- sented last spring, Ms. Shappee and troupe walked away with its share of honors at the Dramatics Competition in Geneseo. This talented group’s production won top honors, while Elise Harten- stein won first place as best actress and Jeff Sabo was second in competition as best actor. Deb Hoffman. Mike Kuhn, Wayne Goss and Sandy Kepler also combined to take two seconds in Dual- acting and Group Oral Interpretation. The fall production, THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, starred Sandy Kepler, Lisa McAllister, and Wayne Goss. This satire on history and the values of society opened on Broadway the same year that Mr. Hurlbut came to Wayland Central and the WCS Youth Players proudly dedicated this falls production to him. 52 BACK ROW, Left to Right: L. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club, an all-girl service organization, has had an eventful year under the leadership of Mrs. Van- Patton. Besides helping to get new books ready to put on the shelves and checking out books for students, the club also orders and sells paperbacks for the classrooms. Even though each girl works separately one period a week, they all spend one day together when the club travels to Rochester for a shopping spree and a hit movie. The thing that the club enjoyed best, next to Mrs. VanPatton’s ice cream sundaes, was the Faculty Tea the club hosted near the Christmas holiday. The tea afforded all the faculty a chance to see the Library’s new beautiful tweed carpet. Oh, yes! Some people can’t believe when the girls call themselves fisher- men. But they certainly proved them- selves at the Fish Pond at the school fair. BACK ROW, Left to Right: T. Townsend, D. Bartoff, J. Kimmel, N. Pfeiffer, FOURTH ROW: C. Ruscitto, S. Ott, S. Newcomb, L. The Wayland chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America continued their fine tradition of service to their school and community. The Club participated in the Cistic Fibrosis fund drive and volunteered themselves to the Rotary Club to lend a helping hand. In addition to their regular business meetings, the club particularly enjoyed Mrs. VanDruffs Values Clarification presentation which helped club members define their feelings and learn about others’ points of view. With many new members, the F.B.L.A. Chorus entertained at the Pryor Rest Home during the Christmas holidays. Sherry and Sabrina’s duet really had the folks kicking their heels high. BACK ROW. With Mrs. Barr and Mrs. Cox providing a helping hand, the 19 members of the Future Homemakers of America became involved in a wide range of rewarding and worthwhile experiences. This club did some traveling and entertaining this year. They traveled to Newfield for a F.H.A. Rally, enjoyed a bowling excursion, and plan to take a final trip in the Spring. These girls also enjoyed hosting the Naples Homemakers and holding a Christmas Party for needy elementary students. Making crafts for sale at an Open House, a cookie baking contest, and the pizza concession at the Fair were just a few of their other activities. 56 BACK ROW, Left to Right: C. Gessner, H. Vogt, M. Under the leadership of President Michael Hargrave and Vice-President Jim Briggs, the Future Farmers of America gained a wealth of experience in enjoying many activities. The greenhouse, still relatively new at W.C.S., was but one of the centers of interest. The F.F.A. grew and sold many varieties of flowers, including the 250 poinsettias sold near the Christmas holidays. The citrus fruit sales continued to be outstanding successes with over 500 cases sold this year. Occupational training included many trips to area farms, working on small-type tractors, building feeder wagons, and a trip to the Horticulture Show in Rochester. And, for re- laxation after the hard work, there were the two bowling parties, the year-end steak dinner at Vin’s Lounge, and, of course, the imitations of Mark Walker-barnyard style. 57 BACK ROW, Left to Right: J. Anyone interested in working with children in the primary grades may join. This year the S.S.O. had 43 members and could provide numerous services to teachers and staff in the elementary grades. Most members are assigned to assist a teacher on a somewhat regular basis, usually not more than one period per week. Students can do a wide variety of classroom functions from teaching a whole class to individ- ual tutoring, but always under the supervision of the classroom teacher. Monthly meetings brought guest speakers such as Mr. Dutchess, Mrs. Hughes, and our foreign exchange students. 58 GUIDANCE AIDES STANDING, Left to Right: T. LeVesque. A. Nelson. SEATED: J. Bill, P. Theresa lived with a family in a small town near Santa Fe, Argentina. Her “father” was a grain dealer; her “mother” was a pharmacist. Theresa was especially impressed with the kindness and warmth of the people she met while traveling around the countryside even though she often felt “kissed to death.” Kim’s experiences were in many ways quite different. Rio de Janie- ro, Brazil, a modern international city, was where Kim called home. Cus- toms and traditions were, therefore, much like home. Kim will recall her trips to the ocean for the first time and the trip north to a small tobacco farm owned by relatives of her “family”. The latter could only be achieved by jeep as it resided in a very primitive part of the country where most transportation was by horse and cart. Last fall Wayland Central played host to two foreign visitors, Hitomi Ouchi from Japan and Karlina Oastman from Germany. Hitomi has devel- oped an unsatiable taste for pizza and American music, though she doesn’t understand all the words. Wayland can be proud of its part in the foreign exchange program when our guest, Hitomi, says “1 like WCS better than my own school back home!” 63 STANDING, Left to Right: M. Merrill, J. Shriner, G. With the first snowflake in the air and a winter storm on their minds the W.C.S. Ski Club began to wax their skis and search for those outfits long past put in mothballs. Winter was here and our ski-buffs were ready to brave the slopes of Swain each Wednesday afternoon. Weekly, these hearty outdoorsmen boarded the T-bars and chairlifts to the top of the hill and managed, one way or another, to negotiate a descent through wooded trails and open fields. The season, however, was gone all too quickly. The time had come to remember all those wonderful times—“Ski Week was here!” President Mark Traphagen daily announced the coveted skiing awards highlighting the better achievements of the Ski Club. Who will forget that twenty skier colli- sion that sent the Ski Patrol diving for safety? This young and inexperi- enced team improved steadily throughout the season prac- ticing and playing their home matches at Brae Burn in Dansville. Expanding the season to 14 matches produced two victories—both over York. With most of the team returning, next year looks promising in producing the best golf season ever. In spite of the rain, cold, and wind, each regular starter managed to maintain a winning record overall. Junior Kurt Robinson led the team in singles victories with a 6 and 2 record while Senior Larry Drum and Junior Mike Fahy teamed up in doubles to post a 5 and 2 record. Bruce Capron, Kurt Robinson, and Kevin Kilbourne repre- sented Wayland at the county tournament held at Geneseo State. With five regulars returning next year, the 1975 season looks quite promising. After losing the opener to Dansville, this young and inexperienced team led by Bob Hill won the next five meets. Finishing the season with an 8 and 6 record, the team was very pleased to place fourth at the Livingston County Conference Meet after having lost top-runner Bob Hill halfway through the sea- son. During the season, the team placed 8th at the Alfred-Almond Invitational Meet and at the post-season Section Five Class B Meet they placed 16th of 25 teams competing. With the interest shown in the junior-high program, Coach Martello and the returning runners are looking forward to improving their record in 1975. 71 VARSITY BASEBALL BACK ROW, Left to Right: T. Despite losing two-thirds of the previous season’s team through graduation, the 1974 baseball version posted a re- spectable 7 and 5 season record. While winning their opening game against Letchworth, the team enjoyed being on the right end of a baseball lesson-to score you must touch all the bases. Their opponent just lost a home run when called out for fail- ing to tag a base. Wayland’s baseball record could have been better if just a few more runs could have been scored. Only 5 times this season did they score more than five runs and won all five games. John Crossett led the pitchers by winning five games and losing only one, and Bruce McWilliams’ .370 slug- ging average was tops in that department. 72 JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL BACK ROW, Left to Right: Coach Dehn, H. A year ago Wayland seized most of the track honors and 1974, well—just more of the same. Wayland’s depth and ability to place in all events enabled Wayland to extend its consecutive dual meet victories to 43 and remain undefeated for the third season in a row. After taking first place at the Bath Invitational in mid-season, the Eagles continued their successful ways to bring home a fifth Livingston County Title in the past six years. Another Section V Class B Championship Trophy, our fourth in recent years, was brought home from Brockport where out- standing trackmen, Darrow Jones and Dan Stephens, quali- fied to compete in the New York State Meet held in Sche- nectady. Several season records were surpassed during the year, but the mile relay team of Mark Walker, Mike Har- grave, Ron Hill and Darrow Jones topped them all—a Sec- tion V record time of 3:33.9. 75 BACK ROW, Left to Right: M. Consistently outplaying their opponents all year, the team again lacked the ability to net the ball. Wayland, for exam- ple, outshot Marcus-Whitman 35 to 13 only to lose the game 1-0. Playing Warsaw three times, losing one and tying two, the Eagles scored only three times—all by Harris Jones. In Section V competition, Wayland was eliminated in the opening round by Naples. All three Wayland co-cap- tains, John Price, Harris Jones, and Mike Hargrave were named to the Livingston County All-Star Team. Despite losing many Seniors this year, the future looks promising for Coach Porrazzo. Coach Brewer put this team through a rough conditioning program and the hours of hard work were well worth it. In addition to regular season meets, the WCS Swimmers brought home three fourth-place finishes in special compe- tition-the Christmas Relays, the County Tournament, and in our class in Section V. New records, a tradition in our swim program, continued to be set. Kurt Robinson, the team’s most consistent swimmer, established a new school and Class C Sectional record. Junior Bob Reiglesperger set two school distance records in the 200 and 500 yard free- style events. Our 400 yard freestyle relay team of Randy Wheaton, Rich Mastin, Bob Reiglesperger, and Kurt Robin- son lowered the school record to 3:46.77. Coach Dehn, in his first year as the JV mentor, guided his powerful team to an outstanding 16-2 record. Sophomore guards Bill Morsch and Tim Rauber teamed with forwards Phil Shepard and Rick Hober in developing a tight, full-court, man-to-man defense with fine shooting and excellent rebounding. Jim Al- sheimer started the season well before being plagued with injuries and Bernie Belanger played well coming off the bench. A talented Sophomore team which should be of great help in rebuilding next years Varsity. The Varsity Team started out the season looking like a surprise in the Livingston County circuit this winter. Shortly after the Christmas holidays. Coach Martello’s Varsity Five found themselves sporting a 6 and 1 record with a third of the season gone. Then, finding themselves on the road and having to play consecutively the powers of Livingston County-Perry, Mt. Morris, and Keshequa, the team dropped their last 12 games including 5 in a row by less than four points. Entering the Sectionals in March, Wayland regained their winning at- titude with an opening round victory against Warsaw and a fine showing while losing to second ranked Waterloo. 81 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS TOP: K. Our WCS Cheerleaders again helped make the win- ter sport season fun and enjoyable. Under the very capable leadership of Terri Boardman and Kim Der- renbacher, Senior captains, both squads spent many hours each week changing old cheers and developing new ones and then developing the high level of pre- cision and movement necessary to encourage fan sup- port for our basketball teams. All this hard work was to pay off. Section V, for the first time, sponsored a cheerleader competition. Throughout the year our Varsity Cheerleaders were judged by the cheerleading advisors from other schools in five categories-image, effect, difficulty, precision, and sportsmanship. Our girls placed third in the Class A competition, only .18 of a point from first place! Both the Varsity and JV squads completed the year by participating in the C.Y.O. competition in Rochester and again made a very fine showing. GIRLS’ VARSITY SOCCER Almost. Almost was the word that the girls’ soccer team used to describe their soccer season. The girls, posting a 3-3-2 record, almost won seven of their eight games. Two ties and two one- goal losses stood in their way. They almost made it to the Sectionals. In the final game of the season Way land played Livonia; a win for Wayland meant a Sectional berth. Wayland played a tough defense but could not score, but neither could Livonia. After regulation play, two overtimes, and three sudden-death periods the score remained 0-0. The outcome of the game was decided on penalty kicks, Livonia winning 2 to 1. Throughout the year Sherrie Walker, Cathy McAllister, and Melody Martindale shared the scoring honors while Judy Price, Cathy Saxton, and goalie Peg Morsch bol- stered the defense. Truly, this was a season the girls won’t forget. BACK ROW, Left to Right: M. Martin- dale, K. Lewis. J. Martina, S. Walker. THIRD ROW: B. Bauer, L. Cowley, E. Averill, E. Averill, C. Smith, J. GIRLS’ VARSITY AND JV BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team faced another difficult season this year. In their second year of interscholastic competition, they managed only three wins, twice over neighboring Dansville and once over York. The girls lost two heart-breakers to Caledonia and Livonia after being in the games and leading most of the way. Mrs. Bowers tried some bubble-gum and milk-shake psychology toward the end of the season as incentives for consistency in layups and foul shooting, but to no avail. None will forget too quickly the game in which Peg Morsch lost her incen- tive prize. Cathy Saxton became the workhorse of the girls’ team, leading them in scoring and rebounding. The season ended with a 3 and 7 record but the girls, with another years experience, are already looking forward to next year. 86 BACK ROW, Left to Right: T. Harter, (manager), K. Sabo, T. Co-captains Cathy Saxton and Carol Smith led the team into the Sectionals with an 11 win—3 loss record. Our Wayland girls defeated Rushford and Alexander in the first two rounds allowing us to go to the semi-final round against arch-rival Geneseo. Mr. Dutchess came back East from California to begin this year as an administra- tive intern at Wayland Central. In directing our elemen- tary program Mr. Dutchess arrived with impressive credentials, a wide range of educational experience, new ideas, and boundless energy. Primarily interested in curriculum development, he has worked with teachers at many levels and in different subject areas. He has demonstrated new approaches to teaching in the elementary classrooms, conducted a high school social studies workshop, and directed an eight- week in-service workshop entitled Innovative Teaching Techniques. As a sideline, when time permitted, Mr. Dutchess has spoken to our Student Service Organization, helped out officiating sports, coached the JV girls’ basketball team, and had fun playing ball on the faculty men’s bas- ketball team. As luck would have it, we chose the worst winter day to take our elementary grades’ pictures. The photographer arrived, but un- fortunately, many of our students didn’t. The buses were late, some students couldn’t get to school because of the weather, and others were down with “the bug.” In order that we may get as many students’ pictures in the yearbook as possible, the photograph- er made a special trip to Wayland to make this a reality. Maybe next year we “shouldn’t try to fool Mother Nature.” 161 AirFrwhencr GIFT SET FOR YE LOVERS OF Colonial Tradition There is an Establishment Devoted to the Most Elegant Gift Ware—Including Glassware Woodenwares—Authentic Pine Reproductions larly Ammratt B ljop North ot the Village Wayland.
