The entire yearbook staff has been looking forward to this statement since last summer. It has required many hours of hard, often frenzied, work. We have attempted to picture the friends who surrounded us and the happy events of our senior year. We cannot name all those who gave help in so many ways. To each we give grateful thanks. 7 STANDING: Dr. Roy Robinson. Mr. Lynn Worth. Mr. Arthur Shriner. SEATED: Mr. William Wittig. Mr. Robert Wallace. BOARD OF EDUCATION Mr. C. This year, in order to get more people interested and involved, membership was opened up for the en- tire high school. Last spring, the Council present- ed their first Fine Arts Festival. It started off Thursday night with a great band called the Dixie- land Ramblers. On Friday night each division of the arts presented a short performance. There was an art exhibit for the people to look at before the other performances began. The Pop Chorus came next and sang several selections. The Drama de- partment followed with a Theatre of the Absurd. The band finished the evening with two separate programs by the Woodwind and Brass Ensembles. On Saturday a banquet was held for all members and their parents. Mr. Chester Rowe, associated with the NYS Council on the Arts, was the guest speaker. A prize was given for outstanding achieve- ment in each of the arts. This year the Fine Arts Council has already sponsored a one and one-half hour concert by Bat McGarth, a former member of the Chuck Man- gione band. A second festival is planned for May 9th through the 11 th of this year. Gap Mangione will make a special appearance for it. BACK ROW, Left to Right: W. Goss, J. Sabo, M McKelvey. R. Hill. W.C.S. YOUTH PLAYER In the spring of ’73 the WCS Youth Players presented THE NIGHT THOREAU SPENT IN JAIL. This play was the vehicle for a new star! It brought the stage debut of Myrtle- the chicken. Myrtle winged her way into our hearts and the halls of WCS. After a brief tumultuous career which took her all the way to Geneseo, she retired. Myrtle was last seen fluttering into the sunset beyond the hills of Perkinsville. After one week of rehearsal with a new Henry David the play was presented at the Dramatics Competition in Geneseo. To everyone's surprise, it placed second-with a special award given to Sean Shappee for his performance. The fall production, LOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL, was beset by squeeky beds and various other complications. One of these complications was a leading player’s lost voice -only partially restored by the entire bottle of Chloroseptic. Definitely an eventful year! 71 BACK ROW. Left to Right: L. Averill. S. The Christmas concert brought an unique talent among the fine arts to the community as Mrs. Barbara DeCario, a professional harpist, accompanied the choir dur- ing the performance. The Pop Ensemble, twelve selected stu- dents from the choir, sang primarily folk and popular music to which they frequently added movement and dance. This group offers to perform for community functions and this year sang for the Gunlocke employees, the St. Joseph School, and the Senior Citizens. Cindy Weber will always remember the Gunlocke performance where, in the middle of her solo, she suddenly lost her voice. The group was prepared for this possibility, however, and quickly filled in. The chorus offers the opportunity to all other students who enjoy singing to participate in a vocal group. POP ENSEMBLE BACK ROW, Left to Right: K. Bronson. J. Sabo, T. Kicsl. R. Bauer. THIRD ROW M. The concert and cadet bands traditionally offers three concerts each year. All proceeds front the Daniel Jerome Benefit Concert, are used to provide scholarships to a summer music camp. The past year Sue Koch and Milton Kuter attended Fre- donia Music School with the aid of these scholarships. The bands this year gave a “Pop Concert” featuring popular folk, and show tunes. A medley of songs of the Carpenters was particularly welcomed. Jeff Sabo was soloist for “Concerto for Drum Set,” and nearly brought down the house. A new instrument, the electric bass, was added to the band this year and played by Milton Kuter. Milton and Jeff, on drum and bass, assisted the Junior High Chorus at the Livingston County Festival which was hosted by the Wayland Central School. Spring and Fall seasons are marching times. The band participated for the first time in the Fall Foliage parade in Warsaw. They were awarded a second place trophy for their performance, one of many such awards for an outstanding group. Genovese. Library Club, with approximately forty-five members, is always a great way to pass study halls for those of us who could afford this. During the assigned periods in the library, it was all work and no play. There was always something to be done. Mrs. VanPatton had her hands full trying to get something accomplished at meetings, however. The peace and quiet of the library seemed to vanish whenever the club came together. The girls once again used their creativity at Christmas time to design that special ornament for the li- brary tree that would win the prize. Cindy Ruscitto was named the winner this year. The traditional Christmas party was held before the holidays, and Mrs. VanPatton’s efforts were rewarded with a set of Swiss China Beils. The girls reluctantly gave up their stolen gifts; and returned to the table, time and again to find a gift they could keep. The parties, shopping trips and movies were still worth the time devoted in the library to putting away books, straightening the shelves and running errands for Mrs. VanPatton. The year ended with a baseball game at Mrs. VanPatton’s house followed by a picnic and the presentation of awards. 84 BACK ROW, Left to Right: J. Briggs. J. McAllister. J. White, C. Weber, J. Those able to attend enjoyed conversing in the language, singing of folk songs, playing games such as the German and French ver- sions of Scrabble, and, most of all, nibbling on the refresh- ments which were always included in the meetings. Such an easy way for the members to familiarize themselves with the language and customs of these countries. By selling buttons with the phrases “Souriez en Francais” and “Achtung, du musst lacheln” (which simply means smile), the club raised money to carry out these activities. The highlight of the year was the observance of Mardi Gras. Festivities began with a delicious buffet featuring many French and German foods served to approximately seventy members and guests. The clubs took turns entertaining each other singing native and American folk songs, all in the native tongue. As a change of pace, Kevin Johnson, Karen Bronson, and Patty Mastin gave humorous pantomimes. The greatest fun, however, was again The Polka and The Schuplattler dance. These were first per- formed by selected couples in costume. Then Meistertanzer Bruce Johann Wolfgang Kapron invited others to participate and the fun really began. Finally it was Auf Wiedersehen, Au Revoir, and Goodbye-a really wonderful evening came to an end. BACK ROW: M. Dudley. THIRD ROW K. Bronson, K. Zone, K. Kurtz. SECOND ROW: M. Wittig, S. Kepler, D. Once again, students from seventh through twelfth grade joined together to go skiing at Swain for the winter of '74. The Ski Club had 48 members, 20 of whom had never been on skis before. Many of us were down more than we were up at first and had plenty of bruises to prove it. How- ever, with the help of some of the more expert skiers, we finally overcame our fear of “Meadow” and “Brewer” and were skiing them with ease. Bruce Capron sort of led the pack as he was co-chairman of the junior ski patrol at Swain and sure looked like he knew what he was doing as he flew down “Clark”. Despite all the commotion on the bus, Mary Alice Robertson, president of the club, could always find a way to make us listen. It usually took a while, but she would finally get it said. A “SKI WEEK” was set up in the last week of February when the members made posters, bulle- tins, and pictures to let the other students in school in on all of the fun they were missing. THINK SNOW became the motto. At the end of the week, the shooting snow-makers, hot chocolate and chili, cold noses and rising chair lifts, were only beautiful memories of the past. Skiing and winter had ended for another year. 88 F.F.A. BACK ROW. Left to Right: R. Conrad. D. Lean. J. Gessner. J. Hawkins, J. Holly, R. W'hitney, B. Milton, F. Shutt. THIRD ROW: C. Gessner, T. By selling an amazing 540 crates of oranges and grapefruit, the club made a profit which made one member suggest they ought to have steak at their banquet this year. The green house, added to the school this year, created a new interest for the boys. They grew a limited number of flats of vegetables and annual flowers to sell. This could become another profitable as well as educational refer- ence. The chapter was very proud of Jim Briggs and Hugh Vogt when they won first place in the small gas engine contest at the County Con- test Fair. Their service has ranged from assisting the school psychologist to aid in the music, art, and physical education classes. Many members who are interest- ed in a career of teaching have helped teach regular class- room subjects and activities in the primary grades to give themselves an insight into this profession. Regular meetings provided interesting programs. At one, Mrs. Cowley and her guest, Miss Campbell, discussed handicapped children; at another, the exchange students talked about their native countries. At Christmas time, the group gave a party for Mrs. Cramer’s first grade with David Schubmehl again acting as Santa. The children enjoyed both their presents and Santa. The club members enjoyed it most of all. This party and the May banquet always are the highlights of the year. 91 C.Y. BACK ROW, Left to Right: T. Wheaton. S. Wolfanger. THIRD ROW: T. Austin, G. The group previously consisted of girls only. With the addition of two brave boys this year, the group has had a chance to get varied ideas, as well as a wide range of opinions. Among the club activities were a pot-luck dinner, a spaghetti dinner, and a bowling party. The group organized a bazaar and sold baked boods at Open House to raise money for its activities. They made and distributed Christmas cook- ies to nursing homes during the holiday season. A Christmas party, complete with games, gifts, and food, was also given to deserving children. This new group is certainly off to a flying start. 92 The Latin Club, composed of students who have taken or are taking one or more years of Latin, had a limited pro- gram this year as a result of Mrs. Mader’s absence because of injury. The members, however, resolved to keep the club ac- tive even with a start late in the second semester. They be- gan with the observance of Latin week in March. First year students were required to be “slaves” for second and third year students. What tasks these masters thought up! All Members made badges which were required to be worn throughout the week or a fine was paid. On one day, mem- bers came garbed in togas or other typical dress. It’s hoped that the annual banquet in May can be held. The members wish to thank Rev. Scott and Mr. O’Connor for the help they have given to them during Mrs. Mader’s absence. Ann Marie Perkowski and Donna Ellis went to Albany State College for a three day FBLA Lead- ers Conference which was attended by leaders from chapters throughout New York State. To avoid the necessity of dues, the chapter put on a bake sale and sold peanut brittle to raise funds needed for their program. Each student in their classes works in the store during the year. Started four years ago with five hundred dollars of borrowed funds, the store has repaid its loan, and made a profit of several thousand dollars. All profits are used to buy equipment such as show cases and display racks for the store. This year a new cash register will be purchased. The store now carries a wide selection of supplies and novel- ties valued at nearly fifteen hundred dollars. A number of selected girls assist Mrs. Bowers in making decisions on questions concern- ing the girls’ athletic program. The girls also conduct various intramural programs. They stay after school to organize teams, referee, keep score, or run the clock. Some give up their study halls to help in the gym or work in Mrs. Bower's office. The girls’ first major money-making project was a Swim-a-thon. This left most of the school and community a little short of change, but gave the club the funds necessary in order to operate. This year a dance is being planned. The money is used to buy uniforms, equipment, and to pay referees. GUIDANCE AIDES Guidance aides are kept busy answering the phone, taking messages, typing, and making opportunity for the guidance staff. Each has volunteered to work one period each day. The working conditions are good, the bosses swell, and best of all, no dull study halls. John Belanger has the honor of being the first boy to serve. His special work is to assist Mr. Hughes with the distribution of audio-visual material. 5 BOYS’ STATE As soon as the boys arrived at Morrisville College they were grouped by counties, and each county was assigned a Marine Sergeant. Each Marine Sergeant di- vided his group into two parties, The Nationalists and the Federalists. This was necessary for the con- ventions which were held every day. The purpose of these conventions was to show the boys a little about the operation of our state government. Boys State, however, was not all politics. Rick and Dennis participated in many sports such as la- crosse, swimming, soccer, tennis, and handball. Although both boys enjoyed the activities on the campus, they both agreed that meeting and associat- ing with boys from all over New York State was their best and most memorable experience. D. The members also assisted the athletic program by acting as coaches in the intramural program. BACK ROW, Left to Right: K. Robinson, W. Goss, M. Wittig. MIDDLE ROW: J. Abbey, D. Dudley, S. Koch. HONORS CLUB Members of the Honors Club often take good natured kidding about their high grades. In reality, they are both re- spected and envied for their accomplishments. As a reward for their efforts, members had the opportunity to attend a performance of the rock opera “Tommy” at the Eastman Theater as guests of the Teachers Association. This was en- joyed by everyone. Later in the year, members and their parents were saluted at the Honors Banquet jointly sponsored by the Teachers Association and the Board of Education. It was a special treat to be waited upon by their teachers (for once!). Guest speaker for the evening was Dr. James Wom- ack. District Superintendent of Schools. Certificates were re- ceived by all members while special awards in the form of selected reference books were given to those who had main- tained their membership through five consecutive semesters. These rewards made the many hours of study worthwhile. 98 BACK ROW M. I ahy. J McLaughlin. M. Last. K. Gobeyn. MIDDLE ROW S. Applin. L. Becker, K. Robinson, S. Koch. FRONT ROW: E. McAllister, A. Both Patty and Jeff had many wonderful experiences in Brazil. They both found the Bra- zilians very warm and friendly, and Patty said that almost everyone she visited welcomed her with a kiss. Our exchange students became very close to their adopted families during their stay. Jeff took a trip to the Amazon. He saw some of the primitive natives still living in that area. However, the Brazilian government is flying supplies to aid them and is building a road across the basin in order to speed development of the region. Patty’s trips, on the other hand, led her to the beach where she stayed almost constantly. Patty and Jeff got a chance to try out new music, and a new language down in Brazil. The music in Brazil was the samba-a very warm and rythmical dance that fits the mood of the Brazilian people. Both had language problems: Patty kept speaking her Portuguese with an American accent and Jeff found that German was the only class in school that he could understand. 100 In September it was our turn to welcome two visitors to our school, Patty Tarregrosa from Bogala, Columbia and Fransisco Garza Moterrey, Mexico. Francisco soon became “Paco” to us all. Later in the year came Hermann Sattler of Sao Louis who was Patty Mastin’s brother in her Brazilian family. They too have had their problems, especially with the English language, but they have come through them. Now they are as much a part of this school as if they had been here all their lives. They have shared in the basketball games, dances, and parties. Patty loved the beauty of the snow while the two boys took delight in skiing and snowmobil- ing. Unfortunately our winter was limited. The cold was another thing! We only hope that they have had as good a time here as Patty and Jeff did in Bra- zil. We students have enjoyed the Exchange Program. The program has brought joys, sorrows, misunder- standings, and amusements to those in it, but we feel that it has enriched all of us at WCS a little. 101 SPORTS Junior Varsity BACK ROW, Left to Right. ' F BASEBALL A veteran baseball team with six seniors in the starting line-up gave the Eagles their best season in many years as they won twelve games in eighteen starts. An oddity of the season saw Wayiand play rival Dansville in a double header on the home field. In the two best played games of the sea- son the Mustangs won the opener, only to see the Eagles come back to capture the second game. Tom Robinson’s .455 batting average led the team with Rob Kuhn close be- hind with .421 including three homeruns which was high for the team in that department. The same pair also led the Eagles in base stealing and in the field. Senior manager, Barry Shaver, broke the into line-up on one occasion when the team was short handed because of injuries. The surprising performance of sophomores, particularly pitcher John Crossett, was a great help during the season and will give Coach Wood a nucleus around which he can rebuild next season. 104 Varsity BACK ROW, Left to Right: A, Farr, D. SWIMMING Swimmers at WCS this year took off with a momentum as never before. They tied Letchworth swimmers for first place in the league and ended their season with an overall record of 14-3 and a league record of 9-1. The boys set records at nearly every meet and by the end of the season a total of 23 schools, pool, and league re- cords were set. Still not satisfied, the team walked away with the county meet and finished second in Section V Class C sectionals behind Wheatland Chili. Kurt Robinson won the sectional title in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.7 erasing three seconds from his own school record. Brother Todd, a freshman, and Sophomore Bob Reigelsperger were outstanding throughout the season. Senior co-captains Rick Gould, Bruce Capron, and Rick Bauer were consistent point winners, with Rick Gould setting a league mark on the 50 yard free style as will as anchoring the med- ley and 400 free style relay teams to new records. Rejoicing over their victories, they enthusiastically dunked their score keepers, timers, and announcer after the last meet, and, with that final act of tradition, ended the WCS swim season and their endless work- outs for another year. 06 Season Record Wayland 44 Naples Opponent 39 76 Letchworth 96 70 Vi Bath 10114 46 Dansville 37 50 Alfred Almond 33 48 York 35 60 Mt. On the first day Coach Porazzo had to watch his son lead Honeoye to victory over the Eagles. The team came back the next day to beat Harley and win the consolation trophy. The boys had a new experience as they journeyed to Marion to play a night game under the lights before over 500 spectators. This was a game the boys enjoyed even in a losing cause. The overall season was disappointing with four victories and three ties against eight losses. It was simply a case of not being able to put the ball in the goal. Against Warsaw the Eagles shot 50 times on goal without being able to score. The team was shut out unbelievably in seven games. The JV team, on the other had, had a great season, winning nine and losing five, two of the losses coming in overtime. This raises hopes for a great season the coming year. Two players from the varsity squad received the honor of being named to the Livingston County All-Star Team. This is the second year in a row Wayland has been undefeated and has won the Livingston County Championship. The WCS track team also won the Section V Championship for the third time in the last four years. Coach Martello did a great job in instilling in the boys a sense of self assurance and pride. The team s strength was in its balance and the ability to score in many events. School records were set in the discus, pole vault, half mile, and in three relays. Individual winners for Wayland in the Livingston County Chapionship were: Danny Stephens in the high hurdles; Harris Jones in the 100; Darrow Jones in the 880 plus the mile relay. Danny also had the privilege of competing in the state meet, a rare distinction for a freshman. At the McQuaid Invitational the team placed second, at Alfred Almond third, and at Penfteld fourth. Sophomore Bob Hill led the Eagle runners in each meet and demonstrated his ability by placing fifth at the Alfred Almond Invitational and first at Penfteld. He also won the Livingston County Championship title. Finishing second in Sec- tion V competition at Alfred Almond qualified Bob to run in the New York State Cross Country Cham- pionship meet. BASKETBALL Off to a slow start in which they lost three of their first four games. The Eagles came back after the Christmas vacation to end the season with a 10-8 record. A strong bench enabled Coach Martello to substitute freely through- out the season. Darrow Jones and Jeff Sabo, co-captains, led the team in rebounds, while scoring honors went to Mark Walker who also had the high single game total of 25 points. The junior varsity squad, sparked by Andy Benbower in an otherwise freshmen lineup, also enjoyed a winning season with twelve victories in eighteen games. Coach Brewer will always remember this season because of a broken ankle re- ceived while practicing with the boys. For a winning season, it was ALMOST worth it. Kurt Robinson and Kevin Kilbourne led in singles with identical records of 6-3. The double teams often changed, but the best combination proved to be Mike Fahy and Larry Drum. Kurt McConnell played only in the last three matches and came through with 3 victories. Marj Hitt, playing only the last half of the season, became the first girl at Wayland Central School to earn a victory. This year the weather was uncooperative. Two matches were postponed by rain; the Livonia meet was interrupted and had to be finished the next day. The meet against Dansville had to be played in a light rain with some strange results, such as balls that didn’t bounce. There were no seniors on this squad and Coach Henrekson used twelve different players during the season. This helped everyone gain competitive experience for the coming year. BACK ROW. McKelvey. D. Speers, Mr. Porazzo. FRONT: D. Morsch. J. Blum. The golf team began its third season of interscholastic competition in '73. In spite of almost no experience on the squad. Coach Porazzo had something to smile about. This year’s team had seven members. While only three more than last year’s team, it meant that no matches had to be lost by forfeit as was the case last year. It also made necessary a play-off round before each match with the five low scores competing in that match. This friendly competition did much to improve the game of all the team members. Seniors Dave Morsch and John McKelvey usually produced the best scores. Peggy Morsch and Mary Beth Dolan held their own with the other boys, however, and were frequently among the five top scores. While the team was able to win only twice in eight outings, they had much to cheer about. These were the first victories since the start of the sport at WCS. This made the season a success! The cheerleaders were at an advantage this year as it was the first year that they had spring tryouts. These early tryouts enabled the girls to practice during the summer months and begin work with their squads as soon as the basketball season started. Patty Mastin’s new Victory cheer not only caught the attention of the crowd, but also inspired the younger cheer- leaders to participate in developing new cheers. Six cheerleaders attended Camp Onanda on Canadaigua Lake during the summer in order to learn new cheers, chants, jumps and mounts. This experience was invaluable to them, and in turn, for the entire squad. BACK ROW, Left to Right: E. Averill, K. Carney, P. Stephens. C. Saxton, M. Dolan, S. Knapp, M. Morsh, M. Lowery, M. Hitt, P. Moore. 20 The girls started their first year of interscholastic competition in an auspicious fashion as Marj Hitt scored from under the basket as the buzzer sounded in the opening game to give the team a 31-30 victory over Caledonia. Thereafter, however, the team dropped its remaining six games. Outside of two losses to the league champions from LeRoy, the other four losses were by a total of only eleven points making the team the “hard luck” champions of the school. The girls never lost heart, even composing a song about their near wins. Marj Hitt and Kathy Saxton averaged nearly nine points a game to lead the scorers. Co-captain Peggy Morsch, playmaker and leading rebounder, enjoyed friendly discussions with the referees. Next year, this team will be hard to beat. GIRLS SOCCER BACK ROW, Left to Right: E. The girl’s soccer team had a great season this year. Captains Marj Hitt and Peg Morsch led the team to an undefeated season. Goalie Peg Morsch had 6 shut-outs on the season. Marj Hitt was the big scorer with 6 goals and 2 penalty kicks. Melo- die Martindale, recovering from the broken leg she received last season, was second in scoring with 4 goals. Joan Martina scored only one goal the entire season. In the scoreless game against Avon, as time in the second overtime was about up. Joan fired at the goal and scored. A banana split was her reward. After having such a sensational season the team was disappointed to find that they could not go to the sectionals because Geneseo had one tie game and we had two. Wayland had previously tied Livonia and the game with the rival Geneseo team was the deciding one. At the end of the game consisting of two overtimes and two sudden death periods, the game ended in a 0-0 tie. BACK ROW, Left to Right: Mrs, Bowers, B. Jones, C. Saxton, P. Stephens, V. Hart, D. Smith, The girls’ volleyball team started out the season with a “bang” by winning the first four matches. Marj Hitt and Carol Smith were captains and helped a great deal in pulling the young team together in building up their skills as well as their team spirit. Suddenly in the middle of the season the girls met their matches. They began to play some of the stronger teams and dropped 7 in a row, before they once again tasted victory. The Geneseo team, a rival, destroyed the home team and then went on to win the sectional title. This didn't make the girls feel any better about the defeat but it was reassuring. For some reason, the girls seemed to enjoy sliding, diving, and even running into walls. The girls’ kneepads were put to good use as there were many five girl pile ups. To help team play next year the girls have developed a secret game plan. The height of the net is approximately 7 ft. The tallest girl on our squad is 5’8’ . There- fore, a few members are planning to attend a cheerleading camp to leam some mounts. This should improve their spiking abilities.
