64 H I L I T E S WAYLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL WAYLAND, NEW YORK VOL XXI FOREWORD . . . This book is a recordofbutoncycar at Wayland Central School. To the members of the Senior Class, however, it is a special year, one we will always remember. As we pause to reflect, we realize that here we have learned to respect knowledge and wisdom, that we have learned to study, work, and play together as men must in this world of today. In the years ahead, may the happiness and the meaning of this year be recalled in the pages of this book. CONTENTS Elementary Grades Secondary Grades Seniors........... Administration . .. JENNETTE VAN PATTON We first remember you as our first grade teacher where your warmth, kindness, and patience meant so much to us as we began our school years. As seniors, your help as librarian guided us through many difficult assignments. You were never too busy to lend a hand. During the intervening years, we learned to regard you not only as an outstanding teacher but a warm friend. This enabled the paper to be more timely and interesting to all of the students. New fea- tures such as a school calendar and faculty-student inter- views were combined with sport reviews, featurearticles, and the ever popular gossip column to provide interesting copy each week. Editor Don Brooks and his staff are to be congratulated for these innovations and the consistently high quality of the paper. ELIZABETH GARDNER She scurried like a mouse between her magazines and sports and even had the squeek” to go with it. 47 JUDY GILMAN Our pixie in disguise always did things in a big way whether leading the band or the cheerleaders. JOAN GRIFFEN Grif may swing high on the grape vines, but that’s not the only time when her feet aren’t on the ground. ANTIONETTE GLADY From Rochester to Albany, Nanette represented the teenage views ofW.C.S. ALAN GROUSE As enthusiastic as A1 was at square dancing, it still couldn't top his smile. RONALD GLASSBROOK Ronnie may have been quiet, dark and handsome, but his trumpet sure sounded out in band. 48 KATHY HUBER With Kathy, red hair doesn’t mean a hot temper. Her quiet ways charmed all. NORMAN JOHNSON As President of the F.F.A., he was a good example for future farmers. EVA JACKSON Eva’s bright red hair matched her flare for sports. EDWARD JOHNSTON Ed proved to be our pot of gold when it came to creating a paradise Over the Rainbow. DAVID JOHNSON Dave’s swinging ”sax” has been heard by music lovers throughout the area. 49 AZEL JONES Acc had the jump on everyone including any English vocabulary book. THEODORE KURTZ Until Ted came our way, Smut was a fungus. SANDRA KERN If all politicians followed Sandy's example at Girl's State, they would face lively competition. I DONNA LEESON Donna put as much hum into a bowling ball as she did choir. JERILYNN KRAMER If these pictures were in color, Lynn’s bright-pink blush would reign supreme. 50 WAYNE LE VESQUE A spotlight doesn't dampen Wayne’s school spirit when he's painting a Dans- ville bridge. MARY MARK Did you ever play 52 Pickup ? Mary is prob- ably the girl who enjoys it, so she does it with towels instead of cards. CAROL LAWRENCE Ethyls and Esters created problems in chemistry, but there was no misunder- standing about every Tom, Dick, and Harry. TIMOTHY MARK During an exciting swim meet Tim swam so fast his trunks had trouble keeping up with him. THERESA MALONEY Every seat in study hall bears Terri’s mark, and her snap, crackle, and pop echo through the halls. 51 LiNNiE McAllister Linnie is as dever with a needle and thread as she was at organizing our library dub. MARGORIE McKELVEY The first Soprano’s of choir and Girls’Chorus would be at a lost without Marjorie’s rich voice. KATHY McCOY We ought to take Kathy on our next camping trip. From what we hear, she can really saw wood. GERALD METOTT Even though our soccer team could beat any- one around, Gerry could not conquer his cow- lick. james McDonald If Jim ever has a farm, he’ll probably grow flowers like he helped make for our Prom. 52 MARY LOU MICHIELSON As our class reporter for the Democrat, Lou kept us up on the latest at W.C.S. ALICE NASH Even though she lost it once, her Nash always found errands to run at Prom time. DARRYL MILLER Darryl ascended the throne ofthe Prom in a royal way, but he was down to earth on the soccer field. SHARON PARKS Although Sparks wasn’t a mechanic, she had as much energy as an A.C. Spark Plug. GARY MILLS Our Henry Ford sure got a charge out of life. This was proved by his talent for mechanics. 53 RODNEY PERKINS Because of his knack for throwing paper wads in bookkeeping class. Rod should have been on the basketball team. SANDRA PRESLER Sandy may have been short, but she approached any stunt in gym class in a big way. LINDA PIRRUNG She had a smile like a mustard hot-dog at the Drive-In, and her gum chewing holds a school record as far as Mrs. Eager is concerned. RONALD RAUBER Ronnie was always found Midway between school and home. DIANE PRAGLE Diane has no trouble getting strikes in bowling, but striking the keys on a type- writer just isn’t up her alley. 54 CHARLES ROGERS Chip should get the academy award for getting his cues on time. KENNETH SHAFER We know Ken can sing pretty well, but we have heard his trumpet in action, and it is hard to decide which is better. CARL ROOK Carl is a real do-it-yourself handyman. If you don’t believe it just look at his car. ELAINE SHAVER Elaine was that extra bubble of carbonation in the 7-Ups”. JACQUELINE SAXTON Jacquie is the sleepwalker in everybody’s dreams. 55 JOHN SPENCER John added that extra little something not only as a class officer, but also in band and choir. MARY ANN STILSON Mary Ann may have been a bang in Chemistry, but her witty remarks left us spellbound. BELMONT STEPHENS He was the flower of the Stephen’s family so his parents called him Bud”. GERARD SULLIVAN Sully seldom made sense to Mr. Hughes, but he made plenty of cents at soccer games. EDITH STEPHENS Edie kicked the ball that scored the point that won the game in our school. 56 ANN TENBROOK Docs she or doesn't she? Even though this is Tennie's hairdresser's secret it’s no secret that she was queen of our Prom. RONALD VEITH To be sure Ron’s sharp apparel was not worn on his paper route, but he couldn't be equaled in his clothes at school. FRANCENE TONKERY Fran sure helped put our Prom Over the Rainbow”. RUTH VOSE Ruth is a real interested F.H. A. member, but the enthusiasm and energy tides away in gym class. MICFiAEL TROJAN Although he’s quiet as a mouse in physics, he fought like a Trojan in chemis- try. 57 RONALD WAGHORN Here is the only hitchhiker who doesn't want a ride-who’s in a hurry to get to school? ROBERT WALKER Bob's wheels were always under motion, whether on a tractor or in a hot Chevy. JAMES WALKER As the reporter for the F.F.A., Jim sure got a lot of news-especially at the bowling alley on Friday night. SHARON WHEATON Sharon never talked much, but with a soprano voice like her’s-why talk? JOAN WALKER Joanie has proven that she’s a lifesaver in everything but Driver Training. 58 WAYNE WILKINSON Waynes always on the ball--whcther it's bowling, soccer, basket or baseball. WARREN WOLFANGER Tork, our knight inshiningarmor, could really charge down the soccer field. ADA WILLIAMS While Ada was shy in Library Gub.this shyness failed to curb any of her enthu- siasm for sports. LINDA WOOD She’s got the spirit, she’s got the voice, she’s got the steam to do it, she’s got the pep. she’s really hep, so Linda, keep doing it. LEO WIXOM Although Leo made it through the magazine drive in fine style, the bridge on the Dansville Road created some problems. 59 JOHN WRAY People think of cheer as being a deter- gent for white, bright, washes, but it was this extra touch that Sting added to the Senior Gass. NORMAN YOHON In English he was Herm or Martin, but it was always Norm, who never missed a tree in Driver’s Ed. JOHN WRIGHT John’s deep bass voice couldn’t quite compete with his tympani in band. f SALLY ZIGENFUS Light as a feather, Sally could really fly like an angel in gym class. BEVERLY YOHON Bcv’s great enthusiasm was a real asset to Mrs. Foster’s homcmaking depart- ment. 60 JUNIOR PROM Queen Ann Tenbrook King Darryl Miller From a white cloud covered by a rainbow Queen Ann and King Darryl looked out upon a world we called Over the Rainbow . It was a world of bluebirds, butterflies, and flowers. The walls of the gym were covered with murals and giant flowers. Baskets of daf- fodils were everywhere. We danced to the dreamy music of Don Jones and his orchestra. For a short time we were truly in Heaven”. SENIOR BALL Queen Linnie McAllister King David Gehr In December the white cloud was replaced by a huge crystal ball within- which Queen Lin- nie and King David sat upon their throne. The gymnasium was transformed into a wonderland of stars, bells, and angels. AgiantChristmastree, beautifully decorated and light- ed, highlighted the room. Special thanks go to Mrs. Ro- berta Johnston whose helpdid so much in making both the prom and ball successful. The Sound of Music” is not only a successful Broad- way musical but also an apt description of the corridors of Wayland Central. With nearly 400 students participating in seven choral groups and numerous small ensembles, it is seldom that the sound of music does not filter into the school corridors as they practice for school assemblies, public concerts, and community activities. Mrs. McLaug- linand Miss Sterner, vocal directors, have reason to be proud of these groups-as proud as we are when we hear them perform. The start of the Christmas holidays is traditionally marked by an assembly at which all of the high school groups take part. This year the girl’s chorus set the mood of Christmas when they sang The Song of Christ- mas . The choirclimaxedtheprogramsingingaselection of favorite carols while informally wrapping packages and putting ornaments on the tree in the middle of a beautifully decorated stage. Easter, too, was greeted by a school assembly as well as an evening concert. The feature of these programs was the presentation of the cantata The Crown of Glory” by the high school chorus. An innovation in the vocal music program saw the eighth grade chorus join with the drama club in the presentation of Once Upon A Time”, an operetta based on the story of Rumpelstilschen. The success of this endeavor prompted the same groups to perform the opera Amahl and the Night Visitor” duringthe Christmas sea- son. Leading roles were sung by Keryn Wolfanger, Susan Hargrave, and Dana Wolfanger. This, too, was warmly received by the public. There is an old saying There is magic in music”. We like to say that there is musical magic at Wayland Central. 74 1 I 5 I ft it BACK ROW, Left to Right: C Boring, K. McCoy, L. Pirrung, H. Bowers, J. Milter, T. Maloney, M. Weber, J. CONCERT BAND Highlighting the program of the instrumental music department were the performances of the Moonlight Serenaders, the school dance band. For many years this group was a much practiced but little heard group. This year, however, the band performed monthly at the senior and junior dances and also played for the Living- ston County Inter-High Ball held at Mt. Morris. Featured soloists were Ken Shafer on the trumpet and Rick Schaffer with his sax. A combo of Wayne Saxton, Karen Saxton, and Rickey Stocking added variety to the programs and were always well received. The string base, played by Paula Plain, returned to the band after an absence of several years. Topratingsandcomplimentarycomments from the judges at the dance band festival held at Pavilion Central School were fitting rewards for the efforts of this swinging group. The concert and cadet bands gave two evening concerts during the year in addition to performing at numerous school functions. The bright gold and black uniforms led by the high stepping majorettes added color and rhythm to the Memorial Day and Little League parades. This year the bands also marched at the Bath Dairy Fes- tival and the Gorham Rigeant of Bands as well as par- ticipating in the mass band day at Cornell University. Even the elementary band got into the act as they pre- sented an assembly for the elementary grades. Directors Douglas Little and Robert Morrow should be proud of the accomplishments of these groups. 80 BACK ROW: Left to Right: F. Plain, M. Drum, R. Glassbrook, A. Brunswick, K. Shafer, R. This is one of the cheers that the Wayland cheer- leaders learned when they went to the cheerleaders tournament at the C.Y.O. in Rochester. Last year the varsity girls won a third place award; this year it was the Jay Vees who won an honorable mention. These awards attest to the hard work and hours of practice used in developing their cheers. The enthusiasm they generate play an important role in the success of all our athletic teams. Two losses to start the season seemed to bear this out. However, the rapid development ofyoungswimmers, parti- cularly Jim Brewer, John Coley, and Dave Keenan, quickly changed this outlook. At the end of the season the team was undefeated in league competition and had an overall 10 won - 6 loss record. Co-captains Charlie Brewer and Dave Gehr along with Harold Andrews and Jim Dewey will be sorely missed next year. School records were set during the season by Bill Reigel- sperger in 440 free style and by Jim Brewer in the breast stroke. In the seasons finale, Wayland finished second behind Canisteo in the first tri-county meet held this year in the Wayland pool. CONSECUTIVE COUNTY TITLE Go! UNDEFEATED SEASON Co-captains Darryl Miller, Wayne Wilkinson, and Ernie Wil- liams admire championship trophy with Coach White. As the gun sounded, ending the final game of the season with Nunda, the team and the spectators let out a mighty roar. This game was the twelfth straight win for Coach White's boys, and the first undefeated season in Wayland history. As Coach White put it, This was a team record. No single player starred during the season but every single player from the goal to the line did his part.” Strong reserves making possible frequent substitutions also played an important part in the seasons success. The strength of the Eagles is shown by the fact they scored forty- five points while holding the opponents to only ten. In sectional play Wayland moved past Alfred Almond to thcsemi-finals. Here they met Wayne Central and battled to a 3-3 overtime game in which each team scored in the extra stanza. In the rematch of the teams Wayne won a very close 2-0 decision and went on to win the sectional title. The Junior Varsity also had a fine season with only one tie to mar a perfect season. This squad will do much to offset the heavy losses by graduation as the team sets out next year to see if they can duplicate this seasons record. JUNIOR VARSITY-BACK ROW, Left lo Right: C. Although losing both tournament games, the most exciting game of the whole season saw the Eagles overcome a huge lead before falling to arch rival Dansville in the closing seconds of play. This season Bath and Wayland were the only A schools in Stueben County. Each team won easily on its home court. In a play-off game for the county championship, Bath turned back the Eagles 56-48. Outstanding during the season were Ernie Williams, the teams leading scorer, Azel Jones with his re- bounding, and Don Brooks in the back court. The JV squad, led by Gary Wolfanger, finished the season with an identical 10-8 record. Coach Kise substituted freely to give the entire squad a chance to gain experience which will be needed next year to replace the five seniors lost on the varsity team. As these newcomers gain varsity experience, it is hoped that the Eagles will fly high as they return to the Livingston County League after an absence of many years. A sixteen league game schedule should add great excitement to the schedule. Leading the squad was Jurgen Kersteins, an exchange student from Germany, who developed into an out- standing defensive player. Steve Didas and John Davis were other standouts on the squad. In league play both Bath and Hornell proved too strong for the netters, sweeping home and home matches. This fall the cross country team could win only once in five outings. Tom Bowers and Charlie Brown were the leading runners. While this season was disap- pointing, Coach Benning feels that the development of some of the first year men may produce a strong team for the next few years. FRONT ROW, Left to Right: B. Smith, E. A young baseball team composed of three Sophomores, four Juniors, and only two Seniors played like sea- soned veterans to finish the season with a fine 8-4 record. In a play off game for the county championship the Eagles bested Addison 6-2. In sectional play, after winning over Oakfield, the team lost to Holley in the semi-finals after leading into the sixth inning. Wayne Wilkinson had a fine 7-3 pitch- ing record and batted .429. He had batting help from his battery mate, Ronnie Rauber at .372 and Darryl Miller hitting .389. The Ludlam boys, Louis at short and Lary at first, an- chored a strong infield which played an important role in the winning sea- son. TRACK The track squad also had a fine season, splitting even in four dual meets while finishing first and second in triangular meets. Better balance, particularly in the field events, was an important factor in the teams success. During the season four school records were set. Record makers were Azel Jones in the high jump, Dick Szyman- ski in the shot put, Jim Robinson in the broad jump, and the relay team of Charles Leeson, Otto Calderone, Azel Jones, and John Zone. All but one of these boys will be lost for Coach Kise next year and dims the hope for another fine squad. STUDENTS HONORED FOR SCHOLASTIC FRONT ROW, Left to Right: A. Glady, C. Belanger, J. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Eleven members of the Senior class were formally inducted into the National Honor Society at a special school assembly. Beforetheentirehighschoolbody, the candidates lit candles symbolic of membership and re- peated the vows of the society. At the same time seven members of the junior class were elected to probationary membership. This honor is truly the highest award our school offers to a student. It is not based upon scholar- ship alone, but also on leadership, citizenship, and service. The pages of this book will show the promi- nence of this group in all phases of school life - music, sports, clubs, and classes alike. ONE YEAR- BACK ROW, Left to Right: C. Landino, V. Jones, G. All students from grade seven through grade twelve who have maintained a scholastic average of at least ninety percent are mem- bers. These students and their parents are honored at a special banquet held each year in May. Only three students have kept membership in the club since it was organized five years ago. Ann Tenbrook, Antoinette Glagy, and Richard Szymanski were specially awarded for this achievement. FOUR YEARS-L E F T TO RIGHT: J. Davis, B. Dean, D. Brooks, Linda Abbey, John Zone. This year the library was expanded and much of the moving and shelving of books was as- sumed by these willing workers. Mem- bers of the faculty look forward to the tea given in their honor each year by the club. Each spring the club takes a trip. This year they visited the Uni- versity of Rochester with particular at- tention on the university library. The girls have their lighter moments, too. A party is held at Christmas and a picnic at Mrs. Van Patton’s home tra- ditionally ends the year. To raise funds for these activities, the club under Presi- dent Ada Williams, sold paperback books during Book Week. Eight girls received book pins for completing four years of service. We are indeed grate- ful to these girls for the service they give to our school. BOOKS AND PLAYS YOUTH PLAYERS Lights are dimmed; the curtain rises. The youth players begin another performance. This club, in only its second year, gave three productions this year. To celebrate the Christmas season, they first presented Amahland the Night Visitors” with Karen Wol- fanger, Susan Hargrave, and Dana Wolfanger singing the leading roles. To help raise funds for the American Field Service program in Wayland, they next presented Rebel Without a Cause” with John Coley as Jim Stark. Members of the senior class aided in this production with Antoinette Glady and Kevin Dolan giving excellent per- formances. The final play was a musical version of Winnie the Pooh”. The beautiful stage setting and animal cos- tumes, all made by the group itself, entranced the elementary grade audi- ence in a special assembly and later an adult audience at a public perfor- mance. The cast of each play. Directed by Mrs. Shappee and assisted by Miss Sterner in the musical numbers, did a 94 wonderful job and their efforts were warmly received by the public. At each monthly meeting they discussed some phase of this topic, emphasizing the need of fun and recre- ation within the family. As a money raising project, the girls again sold Christmas decorations, the proceeds from which were used to give a Christ- mas party for thirty elementary children and to provide baskets of food for the needy. The girls also had a little fun for themselves with a bowling party - the scores from whichareadeepsecret. The officers of the club and their ad- visor, Mrs. Foster, attended the state convention in Rochester and also went to the county meeting in Prattsburg. The group, as usual, closed the year with a banquet for their mothers. BACK ROW, Left to Right: L. Grouse, D. Abplanalp, B. Schaffer. N. Slocum. C. Kina. V. Jones, M. Slocum, J. Rauber, D. Lecson, P. The Future Farmers were led this year by President Norman Johnson, Vice-President Lawrence Duel, Secre- tary Robert Walker, Treasurer Tim Mark, Reporter James Walker, and Sentinel Dave Caron. Funds for their activities were raised by the sale of flares and tire stoppers. The club partici- pated in the Steuben County Fair at Bath, the Field Day at Alfred Tech where they saw displays of farm ma- chinery and other farm necessities, and the horticultural show' in Rochester in which the group won several awards for crop judging. Club activities in- cluded the annual tracto operating and public speaking contests. The lat- ter was won this year by Dick Kurtz. Three boys, Robert Walker, Dick Hu- ber, and David Caron represented the dub at the national convention in Kansas City. This year the boys gave a pageant based upon American Free- doms as a school assembly and then repeated this at the Father-Son Ban- quet. At the closingmeetingoftheyear chapter awards are given to the members, bringing the years work to a 95 fitting dimax. AMI RICA F.T.A. BACK ROW, Left to Right: L. Nor- thrup, M. Teed, C. Lawrence, S. NEW ORGANIZATIONS The Future Teachers of America is an organization of high school students who are interested in pursuing teaching as a career. Advisors of the local chapter are Miss Yohon and Mrs. Merrill. In monthly meetings they hear talks by guest speakers on various phases of edu- cation. During the year they also visited the State Col- leges of Education at Brockport and Geneseo. High- lighting the years work is the opportunity to work with one of the elementary teachers during the school day. Many services to the school were performed by this group. They served the honor club banquet, assisted in the coat rooms at school functions, and gave a tea in honor of the cadet teachers at our school. All of these activities helped the student gain an insight into the teaching profession. ADVFNTURHS IN THINKING A limited number of honor students from the Junior and Senior classes are given the opportunity to attend a group of seminars called Adventures in Thinking at the State College of Education at Geneseo. With representatives from all area schools, they hear members of the college staff lecture on a college level on a wide variety of subjects. A discussion period follows each lecture. This year five juniors and three seniors were chosen to represent Wayland High. Each one agreed it was a valuable and rewarding experience. BACK ROW, Left to Right: R. Kurtz, A. Glady, R. Walker. D. This year a Latin Club was formed, consisting of Latin Two and Three students who are interested in things Roman. The dub, under the direction of Mrs. Mader, furnishes an opportunity for the members to learn about the Romans and their contributions to world culture. The club meets once each month with varied programs such as plays, speeches, book reviews, and projects. The group is affiliated with thejunior Classi- cal League which is a national organization interested in promoting Latin. A dozen members of the club attended the state convention of the League in the spring. Latin week in March was highlighted by many spetial activities. Displays were featured throughout the building, and it was very surprising to see students in Roman apparel moving through the corridors. BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ STATE Boys’ and Girls’ State are held each year at Colgate University and New Paltz State College. Senior students, sponsored by the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary, are chosen on the basis of school dtizenship. At State, the students learn about government from the local to the state level. The role of politics is also demonstrated. This provides the students with a valuable educational experience besides a lot of fun. James Dewy. Sandra Kern.
