With a record of five victories and three losses for the regular schedule, the Eagles were awarded the Steuben County soccer title for the third straight year. Nunda outscored the squad both times they clashed, as they did last year and the third defeat was the result of the Hammondsport game. Addison and Hornell posed no problems too large for Coach Don Schopf's Eagles to solve, and the second bout with Hammondsport produced a hard-fought two-to-one victory for Wayland. At the quarter-finals, the jinx with Nunda was broken, so the team jumped at Holly in the semi-finals with a four-nothing win. At the finals the Golden Eagles Met their Waterloo , when they lost to Wayne Central in a tight game. Wayland's total of 39 points to their opponents' 21 pointed to a very successful season, for which the credit not only goes to Coach Schopf, but also to the team working in a unit as they did. 1953 RECORD Addison 2 Wayland 12 Hammondsport 1 Wayland 2 Nunda 2 Wayland 0 Sectionals Hornell 2 Wayland 4 Hammondsport 6 Wayland 4 Nunda 2 Wayland 3 Addison 0 Wayland 5 Holly 0 Wayland 4 Hammondsport 1 Wayland 2 Wayne 4 Wayland 0 Wayland Central's basketball Eagles hit an off-season this year when they dropped thirteen games and gained two victories. Some of the scores indicated that the squad lost by a very close margin. These games were heart-breakers, but put the Eagles on the debit side of the book. Wayland lived up to the spirit of Dansville-Wayland rivalry, though, by edging the Mustangs out 40-36 on the home court. Coach Lander's Junior Eagles brightened the picture, however, by winning twelve games while losing four. 1953-1954 RECORD Alfred Almond 65 Wayland 32 Dansville 44 Wayland 43 Peny 50 Wayland 37 Canisteo 63 Wayland 51 Alfred Almond 55 Wayland 24 Perry 51 Wayland 38 Arkport 61 Wayland 49 Addison 48 Wayland 40 Dansville 36 Wayland 40 Hammondsport 55 Wayland 36 Nunda 36 Wayland 34 Canisteo 50 Wayland 47 Addison 37 Wayland 39 Arkport 59 Wayland 43 Hammondsport 61 Wayland 46 STANDING, Left to Right: J. Coach White’s Golden Eagles slugged out three times as many victories as defeats, and in twelve contests, brought in 79 runs while allowing their opponents only 39. Canisteo and Arkport were the first to beat the Eagles, in the fifth and sixth battles, respectively, Canisteo returned for the eighth game to hand the boys another defeat, in so doing clinching the county championship. No other team was able to garner two wins from the Eagle squad. 1953 RECORD Canaserago 2 Wayland 11 Addison 1 Wayland 7 Nunda 3 Wayland 4 Canisteo 3 Wayland 0 Cohocton 7 Wayland 14 Dansville 7 Wayland 8 Addison 0 Wayland 13 Wellsville 4 Wayland 2 Canisteo 1 Wayland 0 Campbell 4 Wayland 12 Arkport 9 Wayland 5 Dansville 0 Wayland 1 J Malcolm Newfang, P. The soccer team was spurred on by support from the Senior Band, even when the weather was cold enough to freeze the water in the trumpet valves. When basketball season got under way, the Senior Band again played to cheer the Eagles at home games. Members of the Senior and Junior Bands--over sixty in all-- attended the Marine Band Concert in Rochester at the Eastman Theater early in the fall. Way land Cen- tral was represented at the Elmira Sectional All-State Festival by three students from band, and at the Steuben County Band Festival by fourteen students. Wayland and vicinity residents had a chance to see and hear both the Junior Band and the Senior Band perform at the Spring concert in May and the Winter concert in February, and to round out the year's schedule, the band traveled to Pittsford May 7 for a band contest. A. - Faculty Pancake Supper were entertained by the choir and the Girls' Chorus in a program of a Christmas and win- ter hue. The annual Christmas pageant was colored by appropriate music provided by a mass choir made up of the Junior High Chorus, Girls’ Chorus and the Choir. Ten vocal students were Wayland’s delegates to the Sectional All-State Festival at Elmira, a two-day program, to be well remembered by those who attended. The Choir participated in the Steuben County Vocal Festival in April, and the Spring schedule was filled out by performances at the Spring Concert, an assembly program, and contest in May, and the graduation performance in June. The girls' trio rendered numbers at several occasions, such as the Ro- tary banquet, the American Legion Armistice dinner, the Lowell Club banquet, and an appearance at the Bath Veterans' Hospital. The double quartet and other groups appeared for the Lowell Club dinner and the Senior Play. Mrs. McLaughlin is satisfied that the year's, activities provided a well-rounded and enjoy - able program.
