Mr. Arie Van Howeling whose memory is honored To honor a pioneer West Texan, Arie Van Howeling, his wife gave 600 acres of Hale County land to Wayland Baptist College for the erection of the beautiful Van Howeling Memo- rial Library, which was dedicated January 12, 1958. On the program were Miss Thelma An- drews, Abilene, president-elect of the Texas Library Association, who gave the dedicatory address, Tom Z. Parrish, director of develop- ment, and Robert L. Davis, senior, who paid tribute to Mr. Van Howeling, the Wayland In- ternational Choir, Dr. Strauss Atkinson, Czmyon, trustee, and Rev. Howard Lyons, pastor of Col- lege Heights Baptist Church, which Mrs. Van Howeling attends. President A. Hope Owen presided over the ceremonies.

Mrs. Cecil Cosper and Wayland students assist in receiving and showing guests through Van Howeling Memorial Library at the open house. They are standing at the front entrance, which is flanked by a marble flower divider that leads to the stairway. Mrs. I. M. Murphey, 91-year-old Plainview pioneer and long time friend of the Van I-Iowelings, sat at the guest register at the request of Mrs. Van Howeling. Assisting was her daughter, Mrs. A. E. Boyd, former student and wife of local trustee. Miss Florrie Conway, college librarian, greets one of the hundreds of guests who attended the January 12 dedication ceremony and open house of Van Howeling Memorial Library. To the ll left are Mrs. A. Hope Owen and W. A. Mays, Amarillo, chair- . man of the Board of Trustees. Serving tea in the Heritage Room is Miss Gladys Holley, Plain- view, former Wayland librarian.
