Tall, straight and strong, these stately columns standf as symbols of Faith, Truth, Vision, Honor, Endeavor and Achievement. These columns are invitational symbols to venture the untraveled roads of learning and to explore like courageous pioneers all areas of knowledge. iv The straight and strong columns inspire. 'Wayland students to stand tall and to think straight under pressure. Aroundgthese upreaching columns many selfish ambitions have died and in their stead ?i1lfl'l.liSlllC desires to serve even unto the uttermost part of the world have been born. For nearly fifty years, the white columns have served as a landmark for Christian education, and whe-rever Wayland students go in the years ahead, they will remember with quiet pleasure the tall, straight columns silhouetted in White against a turquoise sky. Hope Owen at home. A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT You will enjoy this edition of the Traveler. The staff has preserved for you many meaningful events that took place during the year. As you peruse the pages, you will travel again the campus trails where you scratched your name in the cement of Memory Lane, laughed in the bookstore, yelled at the basketball games, studied in the library, walked in the mystic twilight from vespers, and made life changing decisions in chapel. Those of you who graduate will follow modern trails to tomorrowis isolated frontiers where you will join other Wayland men and women engaged in constructive endeavors. You will meet the tomorrows unafraid and unfaltering as you follow jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Sincerely, I -.,..,-- A. These extra-class activities are an important part of college life, helping to make you a more mature person, better prepared to meet the problems of the future. I hope you have taken full advantage of these opportunities. ' As you look through the pages of this book recalling the events of the year, may you be reminded that college is not merely preparation for life, but that it is life. I hope that you have lived it to the fullest and that you have benefited from these experiences to the limit of your ability. Sincerely Maurice Sharp, Dean Of Students Christian college. ., .- To- the Student Body of Wayland College: The world's greatest figure in the diamond industry was quoted as saying There is a special place reserved in hell for the mining man who does not dig the deposits the good Lord has given him. A philosophy of development so explicit and commanding is not unworthy of a Wayland's potential deposits are rich and the task Q of locating and developing them is a challenge not only L of tomorrow. 41-Feb- Dear Wayland Students: What is school spirit? It is that intangible quality that makes one school different from another. Where does it come from? Largely from you students, your attitudes and your actions. You then are the Wayland Spirit! What have you this year contributed? My opinion is that you have contributed much in 1957-58. You have provided a nucleus for growth in student spirit through your cooperation in many activities and your pride in your college. In next session's Golden Anniversary celebrations, you can play a still greater part. You will, won't you, appoint yourself a member of the Public Relations Staff for 1958-59 to insure our making Wayland Baptist College known in many areas we have not as yet reached and to insure that all of us will be proud of our Colden Anniversary, which is but a marker to a greater second half centiu'y of service. Sincerely, QXWOZWV Ailese Patten, Director of Public Relations - . to the administration of Wayland College but to every alumnus and student as Well. A fuller, larger, and better Wayland is our aim. Billings, Coach Once a key member of Wayland's Pioneer lineup, Billings ends his second year at Wayland as the Pioneer coach after serving as Harley 1. Redin's assistant his first year hack. Following his graduation from Wayland, Billings served two years in the Armed Services. After being discharged from the service, he was awarded a teaching fellowship in Physical Edu- cation by Baylor University from which he re- ceived the M. S. degree. He began his coaching career at Cisco Junior College as basketball coach and assistant football and track coach. s-- . 1-- -...r- - 'Z Don Klnard a junior from Memphis Texas, has completed his first year as Freshman coach. Due to an injury his sophomore year, Don was forced to quit playing varsity basketball. Be- cause of Don's interest in basketball and his ability to play, he has done a terrific job with the freshmen in preparing them for varsity ac- tion. Also, Don has done a swell job of backing the varsity team by broadcasting as many of their games as possible. Don is seeking a B.
