W President Congratulations to the sponsors, members of the annual staff, and others who have had a part in this worthy undertaking. This annual will serve as a medium to recall many cherished memories. May the spirit of loyalty and enthusiasm, so characteristic of the class of '40, be a counterpart in all of your successes and achievements. fSignedj G. VV. MCDONALD Illia. llleDonald Begins Seventeenth Year Hs President of Ulayland -Tribute given by fudge Frank Day The First Baptist Clitirch of Plainview is paying tribute to Mr. G. W. McDonald in a special service this morning, January 7, 1940, to celebrate the beginning of his seventeenth year as president of Wayland Baptist College. Mr. McDonald has served the denomination for twenty-two years, having taught in the college for six years before his elevation to the presidency. During his administration l1Vayland College has made remarkable progress, and the Baptists of the South- west are rapidly coming to realize that in the quiet, unassuming president of our college at Plainview, the denomination has one of its ablest leaders. When Mr. McDonald came to the president's chair, there was an indebtedness of 344,000.00 which has been reduced to the negligible amount of 83,700.00 fPer- haps some Baptist who learns this will be inspired to remove this small remaining debt.j Mr. McDona1d's good judgment and willingness to sacrifice for the welfare of the college he loves has made possible this vast reduction in debt. He planned and executed an arrangement by which maintenance expenses could be kept within the current income, and let it be said to the credit of all the faculty, that they have cooperated and sacrificed with him, accepting a pro rata salary in order that Wayland might continue to operate in spite of financial difficulties of the depression period. Under Mr. McDonald's leadership, a gymnasium has been built and paid for, other buildings have been reconditioned to better meet the present needs, and the campus has been beautified. Not only is VVayland in better condition than ever before, but it is the opinion of many people that it stands on the threshold of a new day in its service to the youth of the west. Called by many people The Lighthouse of the Plains Wayland holds a strategic position among our Baptist institutions. It stands in a position to minister to a wider area than any Baptist school in the southland. With the nearest Baptist college 210 miles east of Plainview and no other Southern Baptist school west of her, Wayland truly stands forth as a lighthouse of learning for the Baptist youth of West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and part of Oklahoma. Its enrollment has for years been made up of students from all these regions. Among the ministers of Texas, Wayland has many sons to whose work she can point with pride. Included in its present enrollment are more than fifty young ministerial students, and these show promise of a continuation of outstanding service in the future. Mr. McDonald has endeared himself to the hundreds of students whose lives have been touched by his, and has merited the love and esteem of the citizenry of the plains area of Texas. That he is regarded as one of the outstanding laymen of the state is testified by the fact that he was elected state president of the Lay- men's Conference of Texas for the coming year. With his flashing wit, ready sympathy, and mild-mannered dignity, combined with sound logic and sane business judgment, he is a figure to command the respect and claim the love of all who know him. 9 Board of Trustees of lllaylancl College lDay, lplainview C. February 23-Dear Diary: The debators gave a trial exhibition in chapel today. ' The bunch this year really have possibilities. I hope they go to towni' at the state meet this year. February 22, 23, 24--Dear Diary: The basketball boys won the tournament at Amherst this week-end. They also got in a little hitch-hiking experience when the Blue Comet broke down. February 28-Dear Diary: There is a rumor going around that some men are measuring rooms on third floor for repairs. We hope sol!! March 1, 2-Dear Diary: Oh me, I believe little Indian papooses are the cutest little kids there are. We saw plenty of them at the I. R. C. convention at Alberquerque. I hear the cute boy Betty Brandon met Uustin Glickj is going to write to her. March 2-Dear Diary: Well, our hospital quotient is 100 per cent now that both Frances Gleaton and Avery Timmons are back. Think I'll have appendicitis. 35 Diary of C1 lllciyldnd Jcickrdbbit March 5-Dear Diary: Mr. McDonald pulled a good one in chapel today. How are you going to get into a No Admission game? Oh, me. March 11-Dear Diary: We never knew Evelyn Hicks was an actress before. She was really good in the Y. W. A. pageant put on at Tahoka. March 13-Dear Diary: Sometimes I wonder if maybe Mrs. Warren doesn't have a little oriental blood. She reviewed rlloment in Peking today and it was swell! I thought she was very nice to give that just so the seniors could make money for their memorial. March 18-Dear Diary: Saw Mrs. Ivey up here again today. Wonder what daughter Janelle is into now. March 20-Dear Diary: I think the faculty ought to have the Academy award V for the farce they put on in chapel this morning. Honestly, it was a scream. April 2-Dear Diary: Sometime someone is going to get hurt at these Junior-Senior basketball games. It takes days like these to bring out the cave man in us. May 4, 5, 6-Dear Diary: Gee, I feel like the morning after the night before. Not that I mean we did anything bad on the senior Carlsbad trip, but it's so wearing on one to have such a good time as we did. May 9-Dear Diary: The Dairy Show is here again. Thelma Jo was the Wayland representative and naturally Tabor was her escort. I think they upheld the honor of the school in a very charming manner. May l3-Dear Diary: The Choral Club was simply stupendous when they gave their program last night. It was probably all due to the fact that Shirey has been coming to practice lately. May 14-Dear Diary: Junior-Senior banquets always make me feel more kindly toward the Juniors. When they give us such lovely banquets as they did to- night I begin to feel like maybe they'1l amount to something after all. May 19-Dear Diary: These Baccalaureate services always make me feel like a funeral hunting for someone to bury, a mixture of laugh and cry. I made it down the aisle without tripping on my gown. May 22-Dear Diary: Well, it's all over but the shooting. As I look back over the school year I can't find a thing wrong. With me will go many cherished mem- ories of happy times with my classmates. This number soon dwindled away to about twenty-five of the more talented, and more 'experienced boys. 'The team was severely handicapped due to the scarcity of Junior Colleges in this section. However, the good showing they made against their bigger opponents and the way they easily put asunder two all star teams, easily shows that the football season was a success. ' September 23-The San Angelo Junior College Rams invaded Plainview and after a hard fought battle were victorious 19-7. September 29-Wayland journeyed to Silver City, New Mexico to encounter the strong Teachers College team. The jackrab- bits bowed to their senior college foe 33-6. October 6-Wayland went to Roswell and met defeat at the hands of the New Mexico Military Institute 26-16. November ll-Wayland put up a strong fight in the game with New Mexico Normal University. It was not until the closing min- utes of the game that they yielded to their foe and lost 25-0. November 17-The Jackrabbits easily de- feated the Ralls All Stars 32-0. November 26-The Plainview All Stars challenged lfVayland, but were easily out- done 34-0. 47 FOOTBHLL E.Q.slw1f0n End Boyer Tackle Scott Halfback Avary Sullivan Guard lack Dunlap End A. JT. Reverend Thomas Cobb, Bible instructor, broke the silence: Mr. DeLoach will have charge of the chapel program this morning. Mr. DeLoach walked to the front of the auditorium and, glancing up from a col- uminous sheaf of notes spoke: I thought that I would not have to speak to the student body this year. So far, I've got by without it, BUT there's got to be an understanding about these student accounts. You may think that you can just let things take care of themselves, that you can let your obligations slide. You may, but we don't. These notes I have in my hand are not all of the fruitless promises I've accepted, they're only a small part. These, I notice, were given by the seniors of 1940 and most of them have allowed their obligations to fade into oblivion. Leitha Lowe, who is still working for me in the office has paid off her debt to the school. No here's one 34.29 give by Dallas Alford. Dallas was a fine boy-but his knit shop just isn't paying its way. I have nothing against Tabor Alford. The undertaking business is so good, he made his last payment yesterday. Mary Wilson Hicks got rid of her responsibility in an easy way. She married Coach Vernon Jackson, here, and he's now paying out her account a dollar down and a dollar a month. Herels a note for 36403. It's signed by Elzie Gayle. I heard that his latest song hit Upsy Daisyn was No. 1 for the ninth consecutive time on the Hit Parade, but we consider that a poor investment. Jean Knoohuizen owes us 3135.64 which we do not expect her to pay. She is washing dishes at the Mexican Inn. She set her aim too high and just couldn't make the grade. This note, I expect, will be paid if Doris Jordan will quit whirling about so fast. She's the premiere danseuse of the Ballet Russe. I suppose we'll never collect this one. Poor Douglas Tibbets, he's recovering from an airplane crack-up. Now this one isn't so bad. We owe a balance of 3.06 to Florrie Conway. She's doing missionary work among the penguins in Antarctica-with Admiral Byrd's permission, of course. People still look up to Reginald Rodgers but that doesn't make his cold check worth one red penny more. Here's one that ought to be paid. Charles Fleming is editorial cartoonist on the Wash- ington Post, but I'd like to see his signature on a check for a change. Buddy Jones and Reta Hix decided that Wayland College needed some basketball players, so they're raising some. Now when you assume responsibilities like that, we give up. Alton Weeks and his orchestra is touring the country with the Queen of Blues Singers- ,Ioyce Swan. This note of his for 3.75 will probably never be collected. Here'e a note for 36.41 given by Betty Gose. The last time I heard she was caught between the Franco-German lines. We'll probably never see her or the money either again. John Henry johns probably will never be able to pay us. I-Ie spends all his money making trips to Canyon. Will he never give up? Truett Smith finally paid off his note, but he'll never be able to pay off his debt to us- he found Marie Embree here. Betty Brandon finally paid her note too. Shels just finished starring in the Goldwyn Follies of l950. Whew! Did any of you boys see that show? Wow! Tommie Allen has been too busy playing Hamlet to think about his obligations. Never- theless, he is quite a family man. He is married to Evelyn Hicks and they have six promising young actors. By the way, here's Fontilla Mangum's note for 329.655, She's the prima donna of the legitimate theater now, you know after the untimely death of Katherine Cornell. Preston Lucas owes us 31.69. He ought to be able to pay that. He's the Young White Hope who finally defeated Joe Louis last month. Lena Mae Nelson-the old maid school teacher--is making regular semi-annual payments on her note for 33.4-4. O. C. Edwards has just paid up. He still keeps children five months to eighteen years- preferably eighteen year-old youngsters, if they're feminine. Mark Gordon has just started his own radio program called Fibber Gordon and Nellie. He should be able to take care of his note shortly. Mildred Floyd, lion tamer, for Ringling Brothers Circus, still owes us 3.41. W. C. Carpenter, bakery chef, promised me that he would pay this 31.13 but he hasn't yet. He specializes in wedding cakes-they're so inspiring. A. A. Bratcher is soda jerker at the O. K. Drug. He's taking care of his note right along. Opal Botts, first lady of the White House, doesn't owe us a penny. Her husband? Oh, we never heard his name. Eli Turner studied for the minstry here-and he's still preaching at Podunk Junction. He also met Ima Lee Sowder here. I-Ie still owes us 310.915, There's many more here, but those are the outstanding ones. I cannot allow you to get by like that. Its gone far enough! I thank you.
