The 1953 football season was an im- provement over previous seasons in all respects. By exhibiting fine football and excellent team play, the team ended the season with a A-4 record. The boys played good tough football all the way, and could have had a much better record with the elimina- tion of a few bad breaks. In the opening game of the season, the Redmen were hosts to Blake Acad- emy of Minneapolis. Blake, conference champions of the Minnesota confer- ence, was too powerful for our boys, and managed to take home a 14-O vic- tory. The Redmen opened the conference season by slamming down Northwest- ern Preps 34-O. The Redmen were in complete control of the game as they built up a 27-O half-time lead and coasted to victory. Touchdowns were scored by Maye, Nisbet, Kimberly, and Kenniger. On the following Saturday, the Red and White lost as Milwaukee Lutheran scored twice in the final period to win, 12-O. The following Saturday, still angered over their loss to Lutheran, the Big Red smashed North Shore, 47-6. The Red- men dominated play all through the encounter. Pingel, Kapelle, Kenniger, and Maye did the scoring for Wayland. 5 THE BIG Back Row-Coach Boya, Ronny Schmoller, Dick Kimberly, Dick Pingel, Fred Kapelle, Dale Schoon, Bill Leslie, Bob Holter, Keith Anderson, Coach Larrimore.
