PATTERSON, PRESIDENT As the present year i954 started, Wayland came under the leadership of a nevv president, Mr. Raymond A. Patterson. Mr. Patterson succeded Dr. Weimer K. Hicks, who is novv the president of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Nlr. Patterson has long been associated with Wayland. He came to Wayland in T936 as a Freshman and graduated in l94O. He participated in dramatics, the choir, student activities, and was one of the best athletes in the history of the school, taking part in football, basketball, and track. His high iump record has not yet been broken. Mr. Patterson then went to the University of Wisconsin where he gained fame as one of the greatest basketball players to attend the University. ln T944 he was named to the All-American basketball team. ln T948 Mr. Patterson returned to Wayland as head basketball coach and science and biology instructor. He also did work in the public relations department. Mr, Patterson is a well-established member of the Beaver Dam community. He is a member of the Rotary, a deacon and trustee of the Baptist church, a member of the Wisconsin W Club, the Wisconsin Alumni Association, and the Wisconsin Memorial Union. Mr. Patterson has the support of the entire student body and the faculty in his iob as headmaster of Wayland. It is with confidence and great respect that we look to our president, Mr. Patterson, for his leadership as we approach the lOOth anniversary of Wayland Academy. Page Eight Mr. Tucker came to Wayland in l947 with many years of experience living in prep schools. He completed his preparatory school work at Lake Forest Academy of Lake Forest, Illinois, and returned to the school later and served as an instructor for fifteen years. He served as assistant headmaster during his last nine years at the academy. Before coming to Wayland, Mr. Tucker served as head of the Latin Department at Culver Military Academy. After obtaining his Bachelor's Degree from Princeton, Mr. Tucker did graduate work at Grenoble, Heidelberg, the Sorbonne, and the American Academy at Rome. He has also traveled exten- sively in Europe, Africa, South America, and the East. At Wayland, Mr. Tucker is head of the Latin Department, a member of the Athletic Board, and Dean of Boys. lt is as Dean of Boys that most students will long remember Mr. Tucker. His understanding of boys and his excellent guidance make him one of the finest friends the students have. Mrs. Foster attended Fairmont Preparatory School in Wichita, Kansas, and Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. Fol- lowing this, she attended Smith College in Northampton, Massa- chusetts, to receive her Bachelor's Degree, and Columbia University to receive her Master's Degree. Mrs. Foster has a double life here at Wayland. She is both head of the English department and Dean of Girls. The girls know her as a very understanding person, much like their own mothers, her pupils know her as a fine teacher, eager to help them prepare for their college work. For ten years Mrs. Foster has been a very active and necessary part of our Wayland life. She helps us through her expert guidance to grow morally into respected adults, and scholastically to grow into intelligent and thinking people. Page Nine ever since. graduation from Wayland. place every two years. Mrs. Pihlstrom, a favorite among the students on campus, is teaching for her ninth year at Wayland. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lawrence College and did graduate work at the University of Colorado in Remedial Reading. Last spring she completed work on her Master's Degree at the Uni- versity of Wisconsin. Besides the regular teaching routine and conducting special courses in Remedial Reading, Mrs. Pihlstrom fulfills the position of Assistant Dean of Girls with a sense of understanding and friendship that the girls of Warren Hall appreciate. In addition to this, Mrs. Pihlstrom has undertaken the important iob of Dean of Studies, advising the students about schedules. She is respon- sible for the arrangement of the curriculum. Although she has many responsibilities, Mrs. Pihlstrom never fails to possess a spark of enthusiasm and a cheerful smile. the president. that he has had at Wayland Page Ten Mr. A. E. Wichman, Waylands historian toastmaster and Dean of Guidance, came to the Wayland campus in 1925 and has devoted himself to the students and faculty of Wayland Mr. Wichman obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Carrol College. Since then he has done graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago Mr. Wichman was Dean of Boys from 1934 to 1942 At pre sent he is Dean of Curriculum and Guidance and Director of the history Department. He is also Dean of Vocational Guidance and helps many students decide what goal to strive for after Mr. Wichman has served as golf coach and recently coached his team to an undefeated season He is also a frequent speaker in chapel and his inspiring talks are an important part of our campus religious life. Mr. Wichman also is in charge of the Historical Field Trip to Washington D C which usually takes Mr. Wichman has become an important member of our faculty. His constant good humor and patient guidance have made him one of our most popular faculty members Mr. Simpson came to Wayland in 1944 from Nassau New York, where he worked for a fuel and oil company Previous to this he was graduated from Hightstown High School New Jersey, and later continued his studies at Duke University During his ten years at Wayland he has held the positions of Director of Public Relations Publicity Director and member of the administrative staff. In 1952 he became the assistant to Mr. Simpson has left for Kalamazoo College with Dr Hicks where he will continue his role as assistant to the president We wish him the same success and happiness at Kalamazoo g.CUl+ NL...- lw Mfaylanclb wine! Starting as Freshmen we were led by George Maye Through a great first year. Who could ever forget The Ski Jump, or the Rouland show Good News? With Spring came The Com- mencement play, Boy Wanted, and again The Freshies stole The show. S We chose Dick Sterr to lead us Through our Sophomore year. Our first concern was Home- coming, and for our skit we pictured the Home- coming of 1951 through the eyes of the class of 2001. Later we presented the Snow Ball and then the Carnival. We again were well rep- resented in Rouland, This year's production being Oh Suzanna! This year, as well as the previous one, we swelled the ranks of the Honor Roll and every athletic team. ln addition to the class activities, the Hutchins house girls put on Chicago. For our Junior year we again chose George Maye to be our leader through this big year. For Vice President we elected Jim Burgess, Secretary, Mary Jensen, and Treasurer, Sukie Fisher. Early in the year we undertook the Tackle Turnabout, and later the Hayseed Hoedownf' Our really big project was the Junior Prom. We chose Evening in Paris as the theme. It hasn't come to an agreed decision as yet to whether it was more fun decorating the gym or CLASS actually dancing in all its glory to the heavenly music. Miss Porter and Commander Mayer de- serve our sincere thanks for their vital assistance and guidance through the year. Finally our dream of achieving the status of a Senior was reached. After four years for many of us, or three and two for The rest, it is a worth while goal. Our last year at Wayland was led by Jim Burgess with Dick Neuman, Vice President, Ticky Nason, Secretary, Dick Kimberly, Trea- surer. Sponsored by Mr. Mayer and Miss Browne our class capably handled its duties during the year. ln the Homecoming skit we acted out Drag- net and took second place for it. For our effigy we played on the fact that it was Hal- lowe'en and our opponent's colors were black and orange, and came up with They Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance. This year for activities we staged Crazy Man Crazy, and let down our hair and danced to the latest rhythms. Next came the Highland Fling and the Scotch in us had its moment of glory. ln December we danced through the Candy Cane Cotillion. Rouland's Gay Nineties per- vaded the class and soon. afterwards our thoughts turned to a more serious aspect with Pomp and Circumstance. When all the farewells are said, we will still cherish the memories of some of The most wonderful years of our lives. Along with this advancement have come many wonderful new faces. Early in the year we elected our class leaders of T953-1954, chosing as our President, Roberto Fernandez, Vice President, Bill Adams, Secretary, Mousie Gundersen, Treasurer, Dick Pingel. It was not long before we were working hard on our Homecoming proiects. As our skit's theme we used Homecoming at Wayland for which we won third prize. As our effigy we built a giant argyle sock using the saying, Argyles sock 'em for which we won second prize. Soon, after, we put on Bums BalI requiring every- one to dress accordingly. The gym was true to the evening's title having railroad tracks and park benches. Their activi- ties were highlighted by Sadie Hawkins Day, which they will put on until their graduation. Before the dance there is an old fashioned race in which the girls try to catch their escorts for the dance. On arriving there the couples are wed by Marryin' Sam . FQ ll + ll OUq'1 Mfayldncrs wincfo The 1953 football season was an im- provement over previous seasons in all respects. By exhibiting fine football and excellent team play, the team ended the season with a A-4 record. The boys played good tough football all the way, and could have had a much better record with the elimina- tion of a few bad breaks. In the opening game of the season, the Redmen were hosts to Blake Acad- emy of Minneapolis. Blake, conference champions of the Minnesota confer- ence, was too powerful for our boys, and managed to take home a 14-O vic- tory. The Redmen opened the conference season by slamming down Northwest- ern Preps 34-O. The Redmen were in complete control of the game as they built up a 27-O half-time lead and coasted to victory. Touchdowns were scored by Maye, Nisbet, Kimberly, and Kenniger. On the following Saturday, the Red and White lost as Milwaukee Lutheran scored twice in the final period to win, 12-O. The following Saturday, still angered over their loss to Lutheran, the Big Red smashed North Shore, 47-6. The Red- men dominated play all through the encounter. Pingel, Kapelle, Kenniger, and Maye did the scoring for Wayland. 5 THE BIG Back Row-Coach Boya, Ronny Schmoller, Dick Kimberly, Dick Pingel, Fred Kapelle, Dale Schoon, Bill Leslie, Bob Holter, Keith Anderson, Coach Larrimore. S. as they ran up a 32-O score for their third conference victory. The highlight of the game was a sixty-five yard touchdown run by Dick Neuman. Ken- niger, Maye, Kapelle, and Nisbet did the rest of the scoring. The Redmen came up against unde- feated Country Day the following Sat- urday, and lost a T2-O battle after playing the first three quarters on an even basis. In the Homecoming game against Lake Forest, the eventual league cham- pions, the Redmen outplayed the visi- tors throughout the entire game but lost a 14-13 decision as Kapelle's try for a second conversion was wide by inches. George Maye scored the first touchdown, and Dick Pingel scored on a pass from Kapelle with less than a minute remaining in the game. In their final game, the Big Red dumped the favored Racine, Maye and Nisbet scoring touchdowns in the first quarter. The Redmen held their lead for the rest of the game and won I3-7. Dick Snyder and Gene Kenniger were elected the team's co-captains. At the end of the season, Gene Kenniger and George Maye were named to the All-Conference first team, Dick Snyder, Ray Little, and Chuck Nisbet were ap- pointed to the second team. SEGA. The season started slowly and the team had trouble playing together, but after several weeks of practice, the team started to click and play the type of ball it was capable of playing. Mr. Patterson was coach until after Christmas vacation when he took over his full duties as Headmaster. Mr. Boya then took over as head coach and did a fine iob keeping up the Way- land tradition of having top notch basketball teams. The team played its best ball in the last halt of the season as it won six of the last eight encounters. The highlight of the season was the 74-32 victory over Mil- waukee Country Day. Anderson broke the conference Page Eighty and gym scoring record for a single game by scoring thirty-six points. Anderson alone outscored the entire Country Day team. The most satisfying victory was the 64-45 victory over Milwaukee Lutheran as the boys avenged an earlier one-point defeat. Anderson turned in one ot the finest performances ever seen at Wayland as he topped nearly every scoring record in the school. He was selected on the All-Tourna- ment squad and was also named to the All-Conference First Team. ln the tournament, the Redmen won their first round game over North Shore, 51-39, but lost the second round game to Racine, conference and eventual tourna- ment champions.
