Murray, Julie Piclcard, Judy Piclcard GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL 'L I zflfl-lElNl the new gymnasium is completed and there will be available two floors for practice, one for the boys and one for the girls, it is anticipated that both teams will be able to show marlced prog- ress in the game. As it is, to dovetail sufficient time for practice for both teams has been a problem. But in spite of that handicap, Wayland is proud of the records made this season. Winning four of its six games, the girls, baslcetball team closed a success- ful and highly commendable season on March 4th. The first and third games were played against Winnebago Lutheran l'ligh School, of fond du Lac. They proved to be stiff competitors for they had been trained in boys' rules. Une-half of the games were played with boys' rules, the other half with girls' rules, Even with this handicap, Wayland topped Winnebago, Q7-90, and Q8-9. Qur second and fourth games resulted in defeats by the Milwaul4ee Lutheran l-ligh School, The scores were QQ-26, and T8-26. So far as we l4now, never before in history have the Academy girls played College girls. This year Page 54 it was done most successfully. Qur first game with a colle e resulted in Wayland slcilfully defeating Beloit Eollege girls, 35-30. Qur final game of the season was against Ripon College. Again we were victorious, winning 48-34. The first team for T945-46 was ably captained by Joan Richie, who served also as right guard. Judy l3icl4ard, center forward, Julie piclcard, left forward, Laura Mae Baddalcer, right guard, Marion Austin, center guard, and Dorothy Whitfield, left guard, made up the team. Members of the second team were: Nancy Maccallum, forward, Miriam Sager, forward, Millicent Maccallum, forward, Ruth Audrey Murray, guard, Betty Grace Jannasch, guard, and Carol Swanson, guard, and manager, l'ligh scorer for the season was Judy piclcard with a total of 88 points to her credit. l-ler sister, Julie, followed with TO points. All in all, we had a team to be proud of not only for its ability to play the game, but also for its fine spirit. Congratulations to them and to their coach, Mrs. Peter l3asl4olvWayland Greetings

Baddaker, C. Swanson Tl-lE VARSITY CLUB 'HE girls' Varsity Club, familiarly known as the V Club, is the feminine counterpart of the boys' Club. To be eligible for membership a girl must prove her ath- letic ability and good sportsmanship by winning a red in athletics. The club is one year old, and in that year it has become a progressive, influential organization under the sponsorship of Mrs. Pasko, girls' athletic director. Two of the officers are charter members ol the club Julie Pickard, president, and Dorothy Boothby, secre- tary-treasurer. The vice-president, Joan Richie, is co- captain of the girls' basketball team and president of the riding club. Julie and Joan are star basketball players and Dorothy has been a member of the gym team. The purpose of an athletic organization of this type is to promote good sportsmanship and encourage par- ticipation in athletics all for the betterment ol the school as a whole. The Varsity Club has done just that. An evidence ol school spirit was the selling of pins at the Homecoming game. Another project of the group was the Varsity Canteenx' held in the fall. It ,,P,,h,M,,..- ,..-qmw-.-s......,.... g was the First dress-up occasion of the school year and started a lad of Floor shows with its entertaining exhibition of Varsity Club talent. Many Varsity Club girls are members because of their work on the gym team. This group worked long hours practicing forthe exhibit which they gave in April. lt featured tumbling, tap dancing, Indian club drills, and a dance littingly entitled The Blue Danubey' done in formal clothes. Other V Club members participated in the tennis and badminton tournaments which were a feature of the spring athletic program. As does the W Club, the Varsity Club holds an annual inception of members, accompanied by weird attire and a day of servitude which begins in the early hours of the morning. The actual initiation takes place after classes and is kept a Varsity Club secret. But the words MVarsity Club hold such magic that the new members will go through anything to become lull-fledged members. The Varsity Club is looking forward to another year as a Wayland institution. GIRLS' HOCKEY 'l'lE Laura A. MacDonald Athletic Field lor Girls was a busy place during the lall Field hoclcey season. Mrs. Eldon Mayer, who is lond ol sports and enjoys teaching Wayland girls the line points of the game, coached the teams. This is the First year Wayland has had Field hockey as an athletic activity, but it proved very popular in its First season. Early in the fall girls tried out lor positions on the teams, the Red and the White. lwo captains were chosen, Judy Piclcard and Dorothy Whitfield. The teams, ol twelve girls each, played three games lor the championship in addition to their regular practices. The girls, with Julie Piclcard as captain, played teams ol Lawrence, Wheaton, Ripon and Beloit at a play-day held at Beloit College in the iall. Most ol the members ol the other teams were experienced players in comparison with the Way- land girls, but the team played well and had a good time doing it.
