The annual staff has tried to capture the essence and spirit of the past year to help you remember its many events. We hope that you enjoy our Reflections of 1977-78. Dedication Versatility is one ofthe most important qualities of a teacher. During your many years of service at Waxahachie High School, you have served as coach, teacher, counselor, and friend. You have always been willing to help students with any problems they have and to lend a hand whenever an unexpected emergency arises. lt is with the utmost gratitude and pride that we dedicate the 1978 CHIEF to you, MR. EUGENE HEAD. 3 'hs The faces of Waxahachie High School reflect a variety of thoughtsg yet, they show that although we are different, we have a common denominator-each other. f 4 , L! 1 5 Each individual must reflect his own image. That image can be expressed through being participants or spectators, leaders or followers, gi vers or receivers, dreamers or doers, as well as through conversation or solitude. The good ones stay within the mind foreverg while the bad ones slowly fade away. A reflection is like an inner self that only comes forth before you when you wish. 10 A reflection is like staring at a sanclcastle on the beach. Though the water may soon wash it away, the memory of the figure lingers on, U y my ' 3 xi .K25 5- E 3 JY ' -af. Q Nl- M- 'P' 3 X. .K L Ai'-1 'HN' sl sg' I ,Vg new 'K ,MR 3 . .W X -J v v 1 A, 3 ,Lg . This defeat led the Waxahachie Indians to the eleventh rank in state. As the season proceeded into October, many victories were achieved. The Indians now had a 5-0 record with still half the season remaining. On October I4, an upset to all Indian fans occurred, when the Indians were defeated by the Ennis Lions. After this defeat, the Indians hoped for victories in the following four games. A victory was achieved for the Waxahachie Indians against Lancaster, but with the McKinney Lions upsetting the Indians in the next game, the Mean Green finished the season with two additional victories. After a super year, the Indians tied with three other opposing teams forthe All District Title. But still, it all amounted to a flip of the coin. The surprised Gainesville Leopards won the title of All District Champs on the first flip, leaving the Indians being District Co-Champs. We all agree this was an out- standing year. Basketball Team Makes Strong Impression With both youth and inexperience to deal with, the WHS basketball team made an impressive record. lVlany people thought of this team as the team of the future, but our team proved themselves to be a team who was aggressive and exciting in i977-78. They gave us many unbelievably good games, and never quit fighting irregard- less of the opponent. They were in the race all the way. With every single member of this fine team returning, we look forward with anticipation to the season next year. 114 Darrel Byrd Ken COX Vance Hughes Larry Washington and Dan lVIcNaughton show the hard work that made the Indians a great team. One of this year's happiest reflections for our cheerleaders is that, while at camp, the girls won a superior ribbon each of the five days and also brought home a spirit stick. They placed third in a field of 60 schools with two Dallas schools placing ahead of them. The CHIEF staff congratulates these lively, spirited stu- dents for bringing this honor to them- selves and to WHS. The cheerleader sponsor for this year is lVliss Davis. We express thanks to her for her leadership and guidance in working with this most important group of girls. 433' 1977-78 Varszty Cheerleaders we fi - ' ,Q Lf. , ww F: x U Q39 i Q-Q-wx S53 ,, . Taking pictures, writing copy, drawing layouts, and trying to meet deadlines are all familiar problems to anyone who has been an annual staff member. Out happiest moment, however, is the day when we can proudly present the annual to the WHS student body and faculty. This moment makes all our bad memories fade away and makes all our efforts worth- while. Acknowledgments Reflections can be accomplished in many, various ways, but a reflection of a high school year is most often accomplished through the yearbook. A yearbook is forever, and in the years to come as you reflect upon the l977-78 school year, we know you will turn often to the pages of this book. We have attempted to preserve for you the history of a school year which is unique and interesting. We could not have accom- plished this task without the help of many people. First of all, we wish to thank you, the student body of WHS, for it is for you and because of you that this book exists. We hope that each of you will enjoy some aspect of our effort, for you are our most important critic. If you are pleased with this work, then we have accomplished what we set out to do. We also would like to thank our administration and faculty for their kind, understanding patience as we worked on this book. We express thanks to Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Barger for allowing us to photo- graph class favorites in their beautiful home. We would like to express a very special thanks to Mr. Hubert Davis, upon whom this year, as always, we depended so much. We acknowledge with appreciation the class pictures submitted by Henington Studio, The Wright Studio, and the Photographer's Company. We are grateful to lVlr. Allen Otto and the Henington Publishing Company for providing us with helpful guidance during the days that have preceded this one. lt is our hope that the moments cap- tured in this book will make it possible for you to reflect with pleasure upon this school year we have shared together. Happy memories make for a brighter future!
