H igh School Administration XI r Ei' ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Jimmie Ray ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Finis Turner You Know Youyre a Teacher Wlzen. .. You are able to help a student attain his potential in areas of study. You get excited about a stu- dent's idea and realize the best part of it is the idea came from an inter- ested student, not a teacher. Initia- tive, interest, and creative thinking on the part of a student gives me a real sense of truly teaching, rather than a manager of students. An ex-student comes back from college, the service, or a job and says 'I surely appreciate what you taught me in .High School' . When I can see students learn- ing. The majority of your students strive very hard to learn the subject matter you are teaching and suc- ceed because you are an under- standing and efficient teacher. You can see on a student's face that he has at last understood what you have been explaining. You've had your first parent conference . You see a former student fol- lowing an example you set. A student gets turned on to look- ing for more information. A student finally grasps a con- cept you've been teaching for days. A student asks you for further information . ' ' You start being concerned about students learning and not the amount of material you are cover- ing. 20 QR FS .vm RONALD APPLETON teaches Agri- culture and sponsors the FFA . Don't teach school unless you feel you must and love to work with kids. To keep cool no matter what happens. To just be myself. You can't seem right to any, unless you seem wrong to many. The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. Always be honest and fair. To know myself through sincere examination of life. Life unexa- mined is not worth living. Forget most of what you learned about teaching when you were in college. lt's useless! Anything worth having in life is not easily gained, but requires hard work. Take people as they are. To go back to school and get a teacher's certificate . Live life one day at a time, liv- ing each day to its fullest potential. Love thy neighbor as thyself va -- Do the very best job you can in every endeavor you undertake. ln order to teach you must teach the individual. crafts, sewing, bicycling, and Wat Has Teaching Taught You? To expect the unexpected. That I know so little. Teaching is by no means an easy job, but one of the most rewarding occupations a person can have. That there is good in each stu- dent. That loving ideals and living by them is all there is that is good and worthwhile in life. I have been made to understand the enormous responsibility of par- ents to instill the right attitude toward learning in their children. Teaching has taught me toler- ance, love of people, how to be one's self, how to make decisions, how to see both sides of a particular problem, and that teaching is truly a dedicated profession. To be tolerant of peop1e's mis- takes. That you learn more as a teacher than as a student. It has often made me question the WHY behind what I teach and caused me to open myself to chang- ing, new ideas. Too often I think we all tend to rely on what we were taught as being automatically the thing we need to pass on to others. When my students give good reasons for change, I listen. To take 1 day at a time, to not expect change overnight, and to keep my cool in a crisis. That you never stop learning. 24 WILLIAM LEWIS teaches Small Engine Repair and sponsors the club for that class. His hobbies are fish- ing, Deep Sea, and travel. Q.,- IRBY MARTIN teaches Band. A teacher to me is a very spe- cial type of person that is concerned more for the students' well-fare than for his own. He is dedicated to his profession and is concerned if he is not getting his material across. If a person is not concerned about these things, then he or she should not take on the role of a teacher. In counseling, the best results often come not from giving advice, but from learning to be a good lis- tener. The most common complaint I hear from students is that they feel their class or work is dullg although the instructor can set the stage for an exciting educational experi- ence, there must be a desire from the students for such success to be achieved. Teaching is a lot more fun than cleaning house. I love it! CMost of the time .7 Teaching is a very draining pro- fession. Sometimes Qquite often I might addy you feel as if you can't go on. You wonder what it would be like to have an office job where you can leave the problems until you return the next day. However, since you are continually replenished with the strength to go on you know this is your destiny and Someone is tak- ing care of you. Teachers are guardians of our moral and intellectual heritage - What a charge to keep! Teaching pupils is the most rewarding occupation . I'm grateful for the opportunity of working with students because it keeps me 'young' and 'on my toes' in my thinking and actions. Teachers - Students - You can't be one without being the other. wx ,gr I X. ' Q 1. CECIL A. GRESHAM is the T. J. These 12 students were chosen from ninety applicants. For the first time in the history of W.H.S. a class period was designated for annual use. Frustration is common when one pic- ture will not fit into its place and so a whole section must be redrawn. Tact is necessary when disagreements arise over the setting for a picture or the page on which it is to go. When some- one simply will NOT hold still for one more picture, patience is difficult to find. When the annual finally arrives at W.H.S. in its final form, pride is the only word to describe the feelings of the annual staff, plus the eagerness to begin work on the next year's book. I ---'L-:,-Q., - The Key Word - Spmtf Even though the season's record shows 4 wins and 6 losses, our football team provided Waxahachie High School with many exciting moments during the 1975 season. The state champs - Ennis Lions - lucked out and beat us by 1 point. Remember Hallow- een night when even OUR fans thought Lancaster had beaten us, and we came back in the last few seconds to win? Who knows what might have happened if those 3 games we lost by 1 point had been reversed? Our team was enthusiastic, and they inspired all of us to join in their enthu- siasm. The team, the school organi- zations, as well as the entire student body, joined together to create the best spirit Waxahachie has seen in a long time. J 170 Indian Basketball Team Wins 2nd in Statefff The 1975-76 basketball season started on a fantastically enthusiastic note. All of Waxahachie had a dream of ending the eason in Austin, and somehow all of us really believed it would happen. The regular season went by quickly, much as everyone qcpected, with the Indians compiling a remarkable 25-6 record. We were undefeated in district competition, thereby capturing e zone championship. We met Waco Moore in Corsicana for the district championship and won by the unbelievable score of 7-39. It was never to be that easy again. On the following Tuesday night, the Indians met the Daingerfield Lions in Greenville d defeated them by a score of 57-56. On Friday night the game was had anticipated for months became a reality as the Indians ced the South Grand Prairie Warriors at Loos Fieldhouse in Dallas for the Regional Championship. SGP had been ranked top in e state all season, and getting past them was no small task. With only a few seconds left on the clock, the Indians took the Ead and pandemonium broke loose as everyone realized that our WHS Indians were really on their way to Austin! It was a great ctory indeed . , On March 5 the Indians along with more than a thousand fans met in Gregory Gym to mark the beginning of our part in the 'ate tournament. It was the 6th time Waxahachie High School had stood on that floor, and it was a fine team of young men who d brought us there. In that first game we met Silsbee, and the Indians came back time and time again to finally defeat this od team in the final seconds of the game. And then it was Saturday afternoon, and the game that all of us knew was in fact hat all the others had been played about was drawing near. When the officials opened the doors, thousands of Waxahachie fans gan to fill that old gym. It was estimated that of the 7 ,200 seats available, nearly 4,000 of the seats were filled by Waxaha- ie people. This within itself was a tribute to the team and coaches - not only for being a championship team, but for being e true champion people that they are. The game with the Odessa Ector Eagles was everything a state championship should be. more thrilling game has never been played. At the end of the lst quarter, the score was tied. At the end of the half, the score as tied. At the end of the 3rd quarter, Ector was ahead by six, but the Indians came back fighting. With 1:34 left in the game. arrell hit a short jumper to tie the score, and seconds later Archie's basket gave the Indians the lead with 1:18 left to play. tor made a free throw to put the score 75-74 with 36 seconds remaining, but Waxahachie had the ball! Thirty-two seconds . . thirty-two seconds to go and the Indians were in control, ahead, and with the ball. A slip on a wet floor, a stolen pass, Ed the fleeting look onto the golden throne was gone. CBuddy Thompson - THE WAXAHACHIE DAILY LIGHTJ Ector made the -ahead bucket with 15 seconds left, and with 1 second on the clock the Eagles hit two free throws for the final score of 75-78. As one coach in the crowd noted, 'The Indians didn't lose, they just ran out of time, because that's the type of game it was. th teams played outstanding basketball' . CBob Howard - THE WAXAHACHIE DAILY LIGHTJ All of WHS and all of Waxaha- ie is extremely proud of how our Indians and coaches- represented, Waxahachie, our district 8AAA, and our Region in Austin. e could not be prouder, even if we had won it all. Our Indians are champions in the truest sense of the world. The WHS cheer- aders expressed the sentiment of us all when they wrote, WHS basketball team, we love you and thank you for letting us walk hind you on your 'road to glory' .
