DASELER DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT AND PRINCIPAL ISupe1'intendent's Message February 3, 1953. Deer friendsg ' , During the past few months we have been through a few trying times, and have experienced the feelings of happiness as well as those that accompany the feeling of disdouragement. They say that nothing ' of value in life comes easily. If this be true, then it becomes very clear to us how valuable the feeling- of peace and contentment is to our school. At the present time, the future still holds the door closed for me. However, not'looKing ahead, but back, I can see the more pleasant happenings and the very fine friendships that I have enjoyed with both students and parents during my two years as principal at Waverly. c Our difficulties have, I believe, impressed upon many of you as never before, the importance of sound administration and sincere, open-minded governing board members. The fate of your schools are very much in the hands of these individuals, and the contribution your school will make toward bettering citizens, both student and adult, is determined by the policies and enthusiasm of your administration and board. . With the experiences of the past helping to make all of us the wiser, I hope that none of you, whether student or parent, will forget the importance of the school to you. ' 'Q- .3 Q: . OUTSTANDIM GRADUATE AWARD Our award to the outstanding boy and girl graduate was initiated last year. The I selection of those two being made by the eelbers of the seventh and eighth grade class. Students were asked to .name the boy and girl from tho, graduating class that had contributed the most to the school through leadership, scholarship, good sportsmanship and good citizenship. Last years awards went to Wilma Bindi and Richard Benetzlz. If' xy Elementary Sports SPOFTS SUMMARY The school year 1952-53 saw us trying an experiment at Waverly in our sports program. We began basketball earlier than usual in the hopes that we might make a better showing in our competition than we did last year. Because of the fact that only outdoor facilities were available to us during most of the season, we attempted to make up for this by beginning our season earlier, competing against high school 'CW and 'DW basketball teams Owho play during the regular football seasonj, and thereby being in a better position to offer more even competition to the larger schools that we play during the regular basketball season. Scores of our games will show that our plan succeeded. While this was in operation, Mr. Rovetta formed a touch-football team to play some of the smaller schools in our area and to give some of the boys who would not otherwise experience competition on the field, an opportunity to play. Though outmanned, they managed to defeat Collegeville, Greenwood and Linden. They lost to Glenwood and Linden, and in a third game tied Linden. In the meantime, the basketball team played Oakdale, Lodi, Linden Ripon and Escalon. While scores were kept, we counted these games as practise sessions, inasmuch as the teams we played were all high school students. Our beet effort was against Lodi when the grape town boys eked out a two point win over our NA's. During the time when the boys were playing touch-football and basketball, the girls were playing volleyball. Mr. Ward coached his 7th and Sth grade girls to victories over Linden Elementary and Linden High freshmen, while they lost one close contest to the Linden frosh and two to Stockton High girls. Since the close of these seasons, all of the students, both girls ,and boys have been looking forward to softball and track. Our primary purpose in providing these extra-curricular activities is to give the upper grade students some worthy activity to occupy some of their leisure time. After the touch-football season, the Waverly School Citizens Committee sponsored out sports program, when restrictions were applied that would have otherwise eliminated them entirely. The students of Waverly sincerely appreciate this, and have dedicated this annual to the Committee in hopes that it might show our lappreciation to them.
