Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1968 volume:

2 September was a beginning of studies, activities, and good times. It was organization--Student Council, class officers, marching band, cheerleading squad . . . September was lost freshmen, proud seniors and hustling football players. With expectation the students of Waverly High completed the first chapter of 1968. October and November were months of homecoming, happy faces, and hectic rehearsals. In October, the sophomores and seniors spent hours to build their winning floats. Queen Emma smiled despite the rain while our boys played a muddy game. GREAT CAESAR'S GHOST, the senior 4 class play, was a hilarious hit. Then in November, W.H.S. got its first glimpse at psychedelic art at the art dance given by the art department. October and November were calamity and commotion, surprises and suspense. December was dances and basketball games to usher in a new year. It was the month when W. H. S. received the Reading Lab trailer. Also former Honor Society members, as a panel, answered the questions of the college bound students about their various schools. Although Christmas was in the air, the semester was closing and studies continued. 7 Co-captains, Jeff Schmitt and Dave Howard, led the Tigers to victory after victory. For the first time, the Tiger mascot helped the cheerleaders lead the fans. Coach Hawhee stirred the players to do their best. December brimmed with school spirit. In January and February the new semester began with basketball tournaments. After an outstanding season W.H.S. was disappointed by its loss to Northwest. A new course, Driver's Education, was added to the curriculum. In the latter part of February Kris Gardner reigned at the annual F.H.A. Sweetheart Dance. January and February were months of anticipation and anxiety. 8 9 10 March was the month of the Democratic and Republican mock political convention held at Capitol University. Also in the month Coach Hawhee accepted the Coach of the Year award at the annual S.O.C. assembly. Jeff Schmitt, David Howard, and Denny Thompson received honors. With spring came a shower of bake sales, too. March was especially sleep and spring fever. n April was spring sports, the 1968 Prom and the induction ceremony for the National Honor Society. This spring the track team began its successful season. In the last weeks, the juniors scrambled to get ready for the Prom before April 27. During early spring The National Honor Society inducted seventeen members on April 4. April was races, rush, and rain. 12 May was the Junior Class Play, a victory in track, and scholarship tests. The Junior Class presented One Foot in Heaven , after weeks of preparation. Interested spectators watched the track team place third in SOC. The golf team had its second season at WHS. M 15 May was also the end of the year for some. For others it was the beginning of a new way of life. May was graduation and the last chapter of 1968. 16 Because he sets a constant example of integrity and devotion to duty; because he reveres the necessity of music for worthiness;because he exemplifies in his own life the courage and purpose which he teaches; because his years of teaching at Waverly High School have given thousands of pupils a chance for a fuller life through music enjoyment, the members of the Senior Class dedicate the 1968 edition of THE NOVEL to WILLIAM E. His accomplishments both in Waverly High School and at Ohio University were responsible for some rewriting on the record books. Later, as a coach, as a genuine sportsman, and as a citizen, he fulfilled all his early promise. Always a staunch competitor and a generous adversary, he wages perhaps his finest battle in his losing struggle against cancer. The WAVERLY NOVEL is proud to dedicate this athletic section to the memory of Dirk Moore.
