Miss Samson graduated from Waverly High School in 1934 and obtained her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. She also attended Wilmington College. Miss Samson has been an English teacher at Waverly High School for numerous years. With her patience, guidance, and understanding, Miss Samson has helped and will continue to help entering freshmen adjust to their new life. We also extend our thanks to Miss Samson for her efforts in aiding with the installation of the Robert LucasChap-ter of the National Honor Society at Waverly High School, and for the time she has given as advisor. When we think back to our high school days, we will always remember Miss Samson and encouragement which has inspired us to ever greater achievement. We dedicate to Miss Samson her favorite poem: Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year. He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flakes. The woods are lovely, dark, and deep But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. 4 From COMPLETE POEMS OF ROBERT FROST. S. degree from Wilmington College in 1916 when he was 19, and began his teaching career in a one-room school in Adams County where he taught for one year. He spent the next ten years in professional music, appearing in theaters and with such musical organizations as the San Antonio Symphony and the Houston Municipal Band. In 1927, Mr. Shelby arrived in Pike County where he was employed as the first full-time music instructor. In 1947 he accepted the position of director of music for the Waverly District Schools. Music became an avocation In 1954 when Mr. Shelby became principal of Waverly High School. He is a member of the O. E. A., N. E. A., Ohio Principals' Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. On June 30, Mr. Shelby will retire. He has guided the students of Waverly High School to fuller, richer, and more productive educational lives than would have been possible without his innate interest in his students. We, the students of Waverly High School, thank you, our principal, for the guidance you have given us. You have our sincerest and heartfelt best wishes for the best of luck In your future endeavors. Mr. Shelby, this is only farewell - not good-by! A Journey Through Waverly High This is our school! We are proud to be a part of it! Bach little event added to the big moments makes our school life an industrious and happy one. We invite you to leaf through The Novel and take with us a journey through our school, a journey that we hope shows all the facets of life in Waverly High School from the classroom to the football field, from the organization meetings to scholarship tests, and from the beginning of the freshman year to the climax of the senior year. We, the Senior Class of Waverly High School, elected the above officers in September, 1961. We have been guided by these competent officers throughout the year. In October, these officers helped to launch the Senior Magazine Sales Campaign. Because of the urging of President Larry, the Seniors became ambitious and sold nearly three thousand dollars worth of magazines. This is just one example of the effort on the part of the Senior Class Officers. 14 WILL ACORD SANDRA ARNETT MARY LOU BAUER Seniors 1962 CYNTHIA BEALL ROSALYN BELL MARY BELLAW 15 FRED BICE WANDA BLAIR FOREST BLAKEMAN ROBERT BLYTHE DARRELL BROWN JERRY CASH EDITH CHASE PAUL CISCO MURREL COLBURN OSCAR COLBURN 17 WILLIAM DARST DINAH DAVIS ROGER DAVIS JOHN EVANS ORVILLE EVANS SHARON FREY SYVILLA HARRIS EUGENE HATFIELD JUDY HAYNES BETTY HEFFNER DALE HINE MYRTIA HORSLEY ORVILLE HOWARD BETTY JEAN HUGHES VIRGINIA JENKINS NANCY JOE KIBLINGER JEANNIE KROTH FLORA LAWSON FOREST LAWSON NORMA LAWSON SUSAN LAYMASTER ERMA MALOY GERALDINE MARBURY a. The constitution was written by a committee of juniors under the supervision of two faculty sponsors, Miss Johanna Samson and Mrs. Edith Dawson, and was approved by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Standards of eligibility are high: members must be in the sixth semester of high school, must have maintained a scholastic average of B plus, must have attended Waverly High School for one year, and must be chosen by a faculty council on the basis of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Notwithstanding these high qualifications, twelve seniors were accepted in April of 1961. __£ National Honor Society Members elected for the 1962-1963 year are: Gordon Bevens, president; Kay Oyer, vice-president; Scarlett Williams, secretary; Tom Skinner, treasurer; U-Dean Cisco, news reporter; Rita Copeland; Dace Dikis; Tom McConkey; Edna Montgomery; Evelyn Moxley; Dave Thompson; and Cynthia Beall. 1961-1962 OFFICERS - FIRST ROW: Mary Haldane, news reporter; Sam Niece, president. The Student Council Question, answer, motion, debate, vote: these are the principles upon which a free government is based. At the Student Council meetings these principles took shape. These principles were not only confined in the Student Council meeting room, for the rest of the student body participated in them when they selected their representatives to the Student Council. The Student Council plans many activities throughout the year. Among the many activities this year was the Homecoming Dance and the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, the Teachers' Appreciation program, the movies for entertainment, and other similar programs. JOHN NOBLE On October 13, John Noble, author of the books 1 WAS A SLAVE IN RUSSIA and I FOUND GOD IN SOVIET RUSSIA told the student body of his having been trapped in Germany during World War II and arrested by the Soviets in 1945. Deported to the dreaded Soviet Arctic slave camps, Mr. Noble spent nine and one half years in brutal, satanic present-day Soviet Slavery. Mr. Noble, one of the few American citizens ever to see the true and undisguised face of Communism in Russia, warned the students to keep their country strong. Mr. Noble’s informative talk was one of the factors that helped to interest the Honor Society in conducting morning Americanism programs. MAGAZINE SALES Once again the Senior Class of Waverly High School sold magazine subscriptions in order to make money for the the class trip to Washington D.C. This year’s class broke all previous records with an all time high in the amount of subscriptions sold. The leaders in this sale were Larry Robertson, Katie Roe, and Barbara Russell. Brain vs. Brawn I’m confident! Each year the Political Science Club of Capital University conducts a program in some form of political representation. This year, 1962, the club held a Mock Congress. Each student who was chosen to attend was given a position as a secretary, page, lobbyist, representative, senator, or governor. The Mock Congress was held on March 31. The activities lasted for the entire day. The highlight of the Congress was the speech given by Senator Miller of Iowa. The copy was written and rewritten. The advertising staff sold ads in and around Waverly. The art staff began to plan the division pages and the two business managers held tag days to sell the yearbook. By the last of December the yearbook had taken definite form; in fact, a third of it was completed. Working steadily day in and day out, the staff produced the 1962 yearbook, The Novel. The 1961 fighting Tigers of Waverly are proud of another tremendous grid season. The Tigers have brought the championship back to Waverly after only a year's absence, the last championship being in 1959. Led by two great coaches, Coach Hawhee and Coach Pobst, the Tigers lost only one conference game and one non-conference game. With the team's losing only eight graduating seniors, the chances for a repeat in 1962 are bright. 72 VARSITY SCHEDULE New Boston Northwest Portsmouth East Portsmouth West Minford (Homecoming) Notre Dame Lucasville Valley Piketon Wheelersburg (Dad's Night) Jackson WE 32 27 36 6 56 14 50 56 56 8 THEY 14 September 8 September 15 September 22 September 29 October 6 October 13 October 20 October 26 November 3 November 10 Football •A Above: Dave Hall, Dave Henry, Terry McCoy, Tom Paridon. The humorous plot is built around the fair exchange of an Ohio honor student for a New York honor student. The swapped young men are to escort the young miss honor students to the schools' proms. However the plan creates havoc, headache, and hilarity instead of the romantic fairy-story ending anticipated by flighty and gushy Appleeyed Agnes, the teacher who arranged the trade. Troubles reign supreme for a time, but the situation is saved by the timely interference of the two holy terrors, Diana and Carol, who discover the real identity of Ched, the debonair imposter. Fair Exchange” was under the direction of Miss Janive Lowe. Netted! The entire school, especially the senior class, has been proud of them all four years. COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES May 24. 1962 8:00 P.M. It stands, long and lonely, for some of those who have left it will never return. They have gone to take their appointed places in the never-ending procession of life. Without them, the hall will never be the same. Yet it seems to be awaiting those who are yet to enter Waverly High School, a gateway to higher education and a stepping stone to guide the footsteps of those who seek an education and a richer life. m 101 HERFF JONES CO.
