Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1956 volume:

D. H. FRANCIS S eluceitco t R. O. McFERREN 2 GEORGE DIXON CLARENCE COOPER J?te Pt vit4UPi j V Mr. D. Stull Moore became a member of the Board of Education on January 20, 1928, and served faithfully the school and the community until his death in October 1955. The following resolution, taken from the minutes of the Board of Education, expresses the feeling of all who knew Mr. Moore and who were privileged to work with him in any way. For more than a quarter of a century he has sat at the council table of this board, representing the best interests of the public in the great field of education. To serve the youth of this community was uppermost in his heart and mind at all times. It is the feeling that in recent months he has sacrificed his own best interests in order to help to bring to the Waverly Community the very be st in public ed- ucation. He has been a vital part of an expansion program that has taken Waverly from a small village system of schools to a large community institution serving the educational needs of hundreds of children throughout wide areas. He was a profound friend to the teachers as well as other employees of this board. His business ability was an asset at every board meeting. He was honest and sincere in his convictions and yet co-operative in all his relationships. It is with deep regret that we must thus note the passing of an outstanding citizen and fine public servant, and that this board must write finish to the long and excellent service of our friend and esteemed co-worker. 3 TPCr. 'rtytetony In September, 1944, a group of excited children entered the rooms of Mrs. Yahraus and Mrs. Brown at Waverly Grade School to begin their first year of working toward a high school diploma. There were forty-nine girls and thirty-five boys. Some of those first students are still with us. They are Joyce Heibel, Wilma Lef-fler, Roger Andre, John Boyer, Maryanne Patterson, Bucky Downing , Robert Hickman, Mary Jane McCoy, Joyce Reed, David Brown, Robert Holsinger, Mary Jane Teichert, Judith Sue Ward, Betty Jo Stulley, Betty Lytle, Steve Hartmus, Wanda Thompson, and Robert Klinker. It didn't take us long to adjust to this new life, as our grade school days passed swiftly by with many exciting moments. Some of these moments were: The operetta, under the guidance of Miss Samson; tonette training, which began in our third year and was replaced by band in the fourth; cheerleading try-outs in the fifth grade; a basketball game every year which was refereed by Mr. Scott; and our sixth grade picnic at Lake Caldwell. The most unpleasant memory of grade school was the diphtheria epidemic. With our grade school years behind us, we entered junior high and a new building. The first few days were a little embarrassing because we just couldn't remember what classes were in what rooms. During these two years we had our own cheerleaders, a basketball team, and a track team. In 1951, we took the eighth grade examination and made an outstanding showing. The eighth grade commencement exercises soon followed. As freshmen, we began to copy the habits of our upperclassmen. The boys began to try out for sports, and four of our girls were elected as Reserve Cheerleaders. Three of them became Varsity Cheerleaders for three years. Our float for the Homecoming won us 24 first place and a prize of $5. During our sophom ore year we gained quite a few new students. The last of this year we ordered our class rings. At last we became Juniors, and thus began the two most exciting years of our high school career. We published the Hi-Lite for the last semester of school. Many of our boys were in athletics, and four of our girls were Varsity Cheerleaders. We had students participating inband, chorus, and scholarship tests. Our class rings arrived during this year. We presented our class play Spring Fever and finished the year as hosts for the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. Our theme for this was an old Southern Plantation Scene. Finally we began the year we shall always remember. We were SENIORS. We rushedfrom one activity to another. Six of our girls were Varsity Cheerleaders this year. We gave dances after all the ballgames. Our Homecoming Queen was Nelda Palmer, and Carlene Barrett was her senior attendant. We began work on our annual, participated in a high school radio program, and sold magazines. In the Senior Scholarship Tests we took five of the first ten places in the county. At the time that this history is being written, our Senior year has not been completed. We are planning a Senior Carnival which will aid us in our plans for a senior trip. Having returned from our trip, we will present our class play, be guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, and finish the year with our Commencement exercises. We will then face the future with this thought in mind: Today we follow; Tomorrow we lead . 25 ee 4 i TCcii og 956 We, the grinners of Waverly High School, will our grinnership to the following boys: I, REV. Frank Shelby Fred Bauman Charles Shrader 27 (Pitted. 'PtofiAecy While on my way home from graduation, I came upon a railroad station which seemed to have appeared from nowhere. I heard someone announcing that the Train of Tomorrow was ready to leave. The strange name aroused my curiosity to such an extent that I purchased a ticket and boarded the train. I had no sooner sat down than I found myself in an elaborate ballroom which I immediately learned was owned by DEANNA SHEETS and BETTY JO STULLEY. The present occasion was the annual banquet for the outstanding citizens of the year, with ROLAND TERRELL, who had become a famous radio commentator, as master of ceremonies for the evening. It is the responsibility of the teacher to take these children and help to prepare them to be useful citizens in a democratic community. In the old elementary school, the teacher was required to teach only the basic skills and knowledge, reading, writing, and arithmetic. Today, he or she must teach much more. The parents send their child to school to learn not only these skills, but also how to get along with others, an appreciation of the finer things of life, 40 and wholesome attitudes toward social groups and institutions. The Elementary Teacher has a great responsibility because she is laying the foundation for the future success of these children. Within her classes she may kindle the spark which will inspire a child to develop a life-long interest in science, art, medicine, law, or religion. Mastery of the basic skills is the initial step in the laying of the foundation. Upon this she continues the construction of the building by teaching the child an eagerness for life which will inspire him to further his education and to seek greater knowledge as a result ofhaving been a student in her class. The strength of this foundation will determine the permanence, durability and utility of the completed structure. M. O. The English department, therefore, initiated a contest which every English student entered. After several day s of class discussion on the meaning of courtesy and its application in school, the home, and the community, everyone wrote his theme. These were judged by a committee of teachers, who chose three winners in each of the high school grades. 64 GROUP FOOTBALL-ROW 1: Manager, Jr. Ealey, J. Knight, B. Ross, S. Hartmus, R. 'fye zn$ao s4dvcd vi We, the Seniors of Waverly High School, would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Charles Shrader, our class advisor, for the aid he has given us throughout our entire senior year. Mr. Shrader has donated freely of his time and effort in all the activities we have undertaken to raise money for our trip to Washington D.C. Among the many activities he has supervised are: dances, carnival, bake sales, annual, radio shows, and class plays. Without his advice and supervision these activities would never have been completed. Throughout our careers in life we shall always remember Mr. Shrader for his kindness, sincere interest in each student, and wise guidance. SeKuyi 119 ROGER LAMAR ANDRE ROBERT LEE HICKMAN Roger Lamar Andre and Robert Lee Hickman of the Class of 1956 were killed in an automobile accident, March 10, 1956. Bob and Roger had those qualities which endeared themto their classmates and which won for them the respect of all who knew them. Both boys were honor students; both were interested in almost all phases of school activity; both boys were blessed with a sense of humor, a natural cheerfulness which won for them many friends. Bob and Roger will be sorely missed during the final weeks of school. ,The graduates of 1956 are grateful for the privilege of having known these two outstanding boys. They are, however, saddened by the realization that two friends are gone,-that two of the most promising young men in the class were taken before they had an opportunity to fulfill the role in life for which they were so richly equipped. 120 m ihObSI
