' 4 V f 5: HISTORY or THE f l cLAss OF 1955 On a sunny day in September, 1943, a group of little tots came to school for the first time. Some of us were bashful and uncertain, but our teachers, Mrs. Yahraus and Mrs. Brown, soon helped us to over- come this. Twenty-two ofthe original class still remain with us. They are Margaret Rader, Roy Preston, Larry Smith, Donnie and Ronnie Annis, Verlin Kritzwiser, Nancy Landrum, Hilda Butler, Betty Martin, Diane Douglas, Barbara Burdett, Susi Leever, Jack Jameson, Paul Kemper, Gene James, Ed Crabtree, Barbara Blaum, Jim George, Rose- mary Evans, Marilyn Dixon, Ethelanne Oyer, and David Boyer. Grade school dayshurried by quickly with the usual cuts and bruises occuring on the playground. Some of the highlights were listening to the radio once a week an Indian play in Mrs. Matthews' class, and a Betsy Ross play in Mrs. Edlemann's Class. Junior high was really achange because we were in a new building and we were changing classes. Occasionally someone would wander intoasenior room and really be embarrassed. These two years we had our own basketball team and cheerleaders. In the seventh grade our team gave us a big thrill by winning the Junior High Pike County Tournament, ln the eighth grade we took the dreaded eighth grade exam. We all passed it, and then we had Eighth Grade Graduation Exercises. . Several new students from rural districts joined us in our freshman year. When we were sophomores, we began to join in more activities and this was the year that we ordered our class rings. At last we were juniors. Many of our boys were on the athletic teams, and five of our girls were cheerleaders. We were also well re- presented in band, chorus, and on the scholarship team. We were all very proud when we received our rings. This year we printed our first Hi-Lite and our float won the Homecoming parade, We presented our play, 'NO MORE HOMEWORK , and we finished this exciting year with the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Finally we reached that one glorious year that every student says almost with reverence--SENIOR! This year was full of many hours of hard work and twice as much fun, Our football queen was Betty Martin, with Alice Ferguson as senior attendant. We published our final edi- tion of the Hi-Lite, sold magazines, took Senior Scholarship Tests, worked very hard on this annual, had a class play, and were feted by the juniors at the Banquet and Prom. At last came graduation and our farewells. Good-by to W. H. S., to teachers and to friends. From this moment on, we are individuals, each taking a different path which will lead him to his position in life. In the gym which was decorated with stream- ers and balloons, Bonnie Sue Butler and Dickie Jameson rolled out a white carpet for the Queen.
