SEMOBS ■ MISS LENORE VALLERY During the past twenty-five years your time has been generously given to the Waverly High School seniors. Your advice in our journalistic pursuits, your supervision and direction of our class plays, your outstanding success as a classroom teacher, and your unfailing loyalty and friendship have contributed more to our lives than you would perhaps believe. In your absence, we have tried to carry on as you would have wished. The 1954 Waverly Novel will reflect your planning and the supervision which you so willingly gave at the beginning of the school year. It is therefore the wish of the senior class of 1954 that you be especially honored in this edition of the Novel. In deepest appreciation for what you have done, and with all best wishes, we dedicate the Waverly Novel to you, Miss Vallery. 3 MR. JOHN R. TEICHERT Excessive construction and rapid growth of enrollment have kept our Superintendent always occupied. Nevertheless, he has performed his duties well. MISS DORIS KENNARD Having only begun her duties the second semester, Doris has very capably managed the office despite the increased enrollment, correspondence, MR. JOHN CALDWELL Mr. Caldwell, our principal, and friend, who has done a remarkable job during our increasing enrollment problems, has found time to advise and aid us in our school projects. Everyone looked forward to these gala events, from the Friday night after-game dances, to the Homecoming dance, the Christmas formal, and most exciting of all. the Spring Prom. The after-game dances, sponsored by the Seniors, offerred the students opportunities for enjoying their friends together, celebrating the many Tiger victories, and dancing. They were a part of the school life that will never be for- gotten. The football season was brought to an appropriate climax with the Homegaming game and dance. The traditional coronation ceremony was the outstanding highlight of the dance as Joyce Lump, the queen, and her court made up of Erma Jean Cisco, Alice Ferguson, Kathy Dixon, and Joyce Rinehart, reigned for the evening. Amid the hustle and bustle, the holly and cheer of Christmas vacation, was the Christmas formal. The pictures on these pages show better than words, how pretty the girls looked and how much fun everyone had. The Prom was centered around a lovely theme, and enthusiasm for this annual affair was high and bright. Sparkling eyes and floating gowns, dancing to the rhythm of the band, all created a fairy-tale atmosphere. Music and laughter are such an important part of youth. There will be more music and more laughter, but that which we knew here, among our teen-age friends, will always be most precious. 1. Is this on the level? 2. Our job, to tell it. The facts are taken from the files of Waverly High School. The names haven't even been changed to protect the innocent. Dum-De-Dum-Dum The time, 8:47 a. m., September, 1942. The place, Waverly Grade School. Those found on the scene were a group of child prodigies, Connie Booth, David Roberts, Claire Dixon, Gary Whaley, Wilma Beekman, Joyce Lee Jameson. Elizabeth Ann Johnson, Betty Lou Jordan, Ella Jane Ferguson, Tom Martin, Donna Lump, Dorothy Cisco, Charles Helman, Mary Ann Fleser, Jim Butler, Norma Jean Smith, Joe Heibel, Bob Haubeil, Bob Crabtree, Dean Overman, Naomi Kemper, Irene Leatherwood, Clara Ann Whitaker, Ralph Stewart, Charles Newton, and Bob McCoy. The ring leaders were Miss Jackson and Mrs. Yahraus. This was just the biginning. Dum-De-Dum-Dum Time—second grade. Another culprit was added to our gang, Johnny Martin. Our band increases. Third grade—Dorothy Russell, fourth grade—Maxine Mustard and Reva Prater. Fifth grade and the inevitable—talent. Junior American Citizen Club, Mother's Day Play, basketball team, and cheerleaders. Added, Karl Vance and Bob Harbin. The facts, just the facts. Sixth grade—biggest outside job was a picnic at Caldwell Lake. Dum-De-Dum-Dum Promotion to a higher racket—Junior High. Ed Smithson and Shirley Shopshire made a tricky addition to our gang. The past years of training paid off when we took the eighth grade tests. Dum-De-Dum-Dum Time—Freshman year. Place—topsy-turvy school house. Suspicion is laid on the freshman class. Joanne Bloomfield, Joyce Lump, Delores Strickland, Shelby Sharp, Helen Leeth, Erma Jean Cisco, Frank West, and Paul Pollard joined the group. Sophomore year. Our gang goes all out for organizing—Latin Club, F. H. A., F. F. A., band, athletics, chorus, and class officers. Wimpy Frederick was added. Time—Junior yeai Sarah Loel, Patty Hammond, Ruth Bandy, and Ronnie Carson joined the class; Hi-Lites, spring prom, class rings, continual activities including the class play, One Wild Night . Solved with sleep gas. And then the big pay-off—we were seniors. The new atomic plant brought us Melvin O'Brien, Larry Ward, Linda Barrett, Nick McKinney, Vanessa McGowan, Ray Crisler, and Dale McFarland. Dum-De-Dum-Dum After standing trial for 12 years before many teachers, we received the verdict that we were guilty of studying our lessons sufficiently. Our sentence was commencement and a long and happy life filled with memories ot high school. Dum-De-Dum-Dum, Dum-De-Dum-Dum, Dum Claire Dixon Joyce Lump In a quaint little country, In a quaint little town, In a quaint little hut. In a quaint little gown, Sits a quaint little woman, In a quaint rocking chair, With a pillow 'neath her feet, And a blossom in her hair. Her old-fashioned beauty, And her old-fashioned charm, Lend a warm, pleasant air To the quaint little farm. This trim little lady Has quite nothing to do But to say lots of nice things, All the day, about you. She said that limmy Butler Is a multi-millionaire, And that our Miss Shelby Sharp Teaches girls of child care. Nick McKinney finally settled On a ranch in Mexico, Where his utmost pride and joy Is his super rodeo. And she whispered in my ear That Mary Ann is keeping house. Then we cringed together when She told me Karl trains a mouse. Bob McCoy makes atomic aids So everyone can hear. Joyce Lee psychoanalyzes To find what causes fear. Tom Griffith is a doctor. Erma Jean Cisco is his nurse. Dale McFarland traded in his Packard And now he drives a hearse. Larry Ward and Linda Barrett Started working at the plant. Every year they visit Europe Where they go to play and pant. The little lady told me Of our record-setting friends: Connie Booth, first woman patrolman; Ronnie Carson, most eggs from hens; Shotty Schauseil swam the Channel In eleven minutes flat; Wimpy Frederick hits them all When he goes up to bat. Wilma Beekman takes dictation. Sarah Loel types and files. Charles Newton is an archer. Bob Crabtree lays orlon tiles. 69 CLASS PBOPBECr Reva Prater is a florist. Clara Ann, an office girl. Ella Jane and Dorothy Cisco Sell atomicated curl . By this time, the day was passing, And the dinner hour had come. For our meal's entertainment We heard From the Vine the Plum . Then she filled us full of muffins, Tarts, and cakes and roasted pear. And we ate upon a table That was spread with utmost care. After all the food was eaten And our stomachs satisfied, The lady told of other jobs Our classmates occupied. David Roberts is the Speaker Of the House in Washington. E. Ann Johnson's giving concerts From New York to Galveston. Charles Helman now is singing With the Metropolitan. Archie Patrick is a gangster— On TV—does he have fun! Betty Lou is head professor For Ohio State Home Ec. Helen Leeth is the chief cook For the kids at Georgia Tech. Donna Lump is now the owner Of the Alma Kroger Store. Gary Whaley is the maker Of an automatic door. Johnny Martin is a football pro. He's playing with the Rams. Tommy Joe's a deep sea diver Getting rich diving for clams. Delores and Naomi run A millinery shop. Bob Harbin has a stand out East For selling soda pop. Ray Crisler runs a factory In the eastern part of France. Norma Jean and Vanessa Have a lovely school of dance. The president of our senior class Of nineteen-hundred fifty-four Is now distinguished president Of Smithson Steel Ore. Frank West and Pal Paul Pollard Are the rulers of Siam. All the natives marveled At their antics and their ham . 70 Families in South Africa Are happier than before. Patty Hammond, missionary. Seems to help each village more. Shirley Shopshire also helps The people of another race By transmitting radar messages To men in outer space. Scotty Owens is a farmer On a hill in Kentucky, Where his bosom friend, Frank Bennett, Helps him lie beneath a tree. In the mornings they sip cider. They are happy, there's no doubt, And they have to sleep all day long 'Cause by noon they're tuckered out. Joanne Bloomfield is a waitress In the Stork Club in New York. She's so famous they presented her With a platinum plated fork. Irene Leatherwood is a singer. Maxine Mustard teaches school. Bobby Haubeil owns a farm; Melvin O'Brien, a swimming pool. Claire Dixon is the founder Of the Grandview Hospital. Her greatest operation Was on a marsupial. Mistress of ceremonies, Joyce Lump, fulfills ambition, For now she has her very own show On colored television. Frank Colegrove and Ralph Stewart Run the U. S. Government. Secretary of Tax Collecting and Secretary of Unemployment. Just one left, Dean Overman, Handyman of every trade. You must ask him, he can tell you Of what everything is made. Quaintly now the little lady As retiring for the night, Rearranged an old quotation To make things all clear and right. All these things are only hear-say, So the little lady said.
