Ill seniors SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Janet Moats Secretary; Fred Moore President; Tom McFerran Vice President; Linda Blaum CLASS HISTORY OF WAVERLY SENIORS OF 1953 SENIORS! Yes, Seniors at last, and it is hardly believable that it was only twelve years ago that forty first graders entered the rooms of Mrs. Yahraus and Mrs. Brown. How exciting it was for the third jgrade to present a Christmas play, directed by Mrs. Clark and Miss Penniston, with the whole school attending. When we were in the fifth grade, many of us started our school-band career under the supervision of Miss Samson. That same year, Mrs. Hoeckh organized the Junior American Citizen Club. During the sixth grade, basketball was our major interest, and it has extended to the present time, and was climaxed with the winning of the Southern Ohio Conference, Pike County Tournament, and the Sectional Tournament. Nothing could have been more thrilling than to enter junior-high—new building, new teachers, new customs, and manners. Schedules, bells, halls and rooms were at first surely confusing, but we soon learned. Reaching the eighth grade was a real acheivement, and we worked harder than ever before as the teachers urged us on to that special goal, the eighth grade examination. Each step of the way had become a succession of thrills. We felt so big , and were probably so green , as freshmen. Four subjects, which had sounded so easy, were much harder than all of those we had had before we entered high school. Yet, these difficulties did not lessen our ambition. These were our last four years, and we wanted to do our best. Entering our sophomore year was a turning point in both our school life and our social life. We were now better prepared to participate in more extra-curricular activities. Leaving our first two triumphant years behind, we entered the exciting junior year. Learning to publish the Hi-Lites was one of the big events of the year. Class rings arrived, and we proudly showed them off . Following the junior class play, Let Me Out of Here , we Joined forces with the seniors and started to prepare for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Thus ended the junior year in a continual round of activities. And, now, we are SENIORS! We've enjoyed the work of planning Hi-Lites, dances, chapels, class meetings, and finally the Waverly Novel. With the support and guidance of our teachers, we have reached our destination, Commencement. We, the Seniors of 1953, say thank you , and with our motto 8 in mind, A quitter never wins, a winner never quits , we say farewell to
