Yes, Seniors at last, and it is hardly believable that it was only twelve years ago that forty first graders entered the rooms of Mrs. Yahraus and Mrs. Brown. How exciting it was for the third jgrade to present a Christmas play, directed by Mrs. Clark and Miss Penniston, with the whole school attending. When we were in the fifth grade, many of us started our school-band career under the supervision of Miss Samson. That same year, Mrs. Hoeckh organized the Junior American Citizen Club. During the sixth grade, basketball was our major interest, and it has extended to the present time, and was climaxed with the winning of the Southern Ohio Conference, Pike County Tournament, and the Sectional Tournament. Nothing could have been more thrilling than to enter junior-high—new building, new teachers, new customs, and manners. Schedules, bells, halls and rooms were at first surely confusing, but we soon learned. Reaching the eighth grade was a real acheivement, and we worked harder than ever before as the teachers urged us on to that special goal, the eighth grade examination. Each step of the way had become a succession of thrills. We felt so big , and were probably so green , as freshmen. Four subjects, which had sounded so easy, were much harder than all of those we had had before we entered high school. Yet, these difficulties did not lessen our ambition. These were our last four years, and we wanted to do our best. Entering our sophomore year was a turning point in both our school life and our social life. We were now better prepared to participate in more extra-curricular activities. Leaving our first two triumphant years behind, we entered the exciting junior year. Learning to publish the Hi-Lites was one of the big events of the year. Class rings arrived, and we proudly showed them off . Following the junior class play, Let Me Out of Here , we Joined forces with the seniors and started to prepare for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Thus ended the junior year in a continual round of activities. And, now, we are SENIORS! We've enjoyed the work of planning Hi-Lites, dances, chapels, class meetings, and finally the Waverly Novel. With the support and guidance of our teachers, we have reached our destination, Commencement. We, the Seniors of 1953, say thank you , and with our motto 8 in mind, A quitter never wins, a winner never quits , we say farewell to Ema Arnett Ruth Bandy Alan Baughn Edith Colley Fred Conkel Martha Colburn Nancy Daily Greta Davis Jerry Dutcher Ronald Evans Donald Diamond Keith Davis Fred Edelmann Pauline Elliott Doris Kennard Ina Lawson 14 Elouise Kitchen Rubv Loonev Janet Moats Gary Marhoover Dale McCoy Jerry Miller Nancy Redman Marvci Smith Sondra Smith Betty Snyder Leticia Stevens William Stubbs James Tackett Joe Wittkugle Viola Trent Thelma Woods 18 Virginia Ward Violet Woods Prophecy May 15, 1968 I received my invitation to a party given by Donna Booth, Waverly's top party giver. After an interval of fifteen years, she is planning a reunion of the class of 53 . The evening finally arrives, and I arrive early. No one is here yet. I'll just go in, sit down, and wait. The door-bell is ringing, and there are Ema Arnett, Sondra Smith, and Greta Davis, the movie actresses. Next come Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Dutcher, nee Madalyn Keechle. They own the two largest theaters in Waverly. The people are still coming, and, since I can't see them all, I'll walk around the room to see who is here. • On the stage is the orchestra—which is the finest in the country—composed of Johnny Baughn, Fred Edlemann, Janet Moats, Patty Schauseil, and Linda Blaum, who, I might add, is married to the director, Tom McFerren. Over there I see Lola Mae Noel who owns a chain of restaurants all over the U. S. There are a number of professional men here. Among them are Earl Knight and A1 Rhoads, the football players, and Gary Marhoover, professional baseball pitcher. Oh, myl there is the lover boy of the screen, Donald Diamond. With him is his wife, the former Nancy Daily. Upon the stage I see Nancy Redman, Virginia Newton, Ruthie Bandy, and Viola Trent getting ready to sing. There is Doris Kennard, the owner of an exclusive dress shop here in Waverly. With her are her three top models, Sylvia Hibben, Elouise Kitchen, and Pauline Elliott. I see the Dean of the University of Waverly, Fred Moore. Along with him are the professors, Ronald Evans, Jim Tackett, Reva Boylan, and Eleanor Gary. Eleanor teaches dramatic art at the university. Ruby Looney and Jerry Miller are the editors of the Waverly News of which I am a reporter. Ralph Guckenberger and Joe Wittkugle own a large service station in Waverly. The great comedian of television, Frank Ferguson, is also here. The owners of the exotic night club, The Owl , are here, William Stubbs and Keith Davis. With them is their manager, Lavada Cisco. A special feature of the club is The Blotter Spots Quartette , Don Brown, Fred Conkel, Dale McCoy, and Rodney Fultz. The mayor of Waverly, Leticia Stevens, is talking to her council, composed of Betty Snyder, William Branham, Marva Smith, and Virginia Ward. They are planning a new highway through Waverly under the engineering of Delano Beasley. Ina Lawson, owner of the Fifi Beauty Salon, is here. With her are her assistants, Thelma Woods, Martha Colburn, Violet Woods, and Edith Colley. I must leave the party now and get back to the paper and write this up.
