Printed by Greenfield Printing Publishing Co. Greenfield, Ohio 1940 THE 1940 WAVERLEY NOVEL EDITION PUBLISHED BY . FORTY THREE SENIORS L OF WAVERLY HIGH SCHOOL OF WAVERLY L OHIO. L PROPERTY OF Donated By Dr. Johnson I L L The WAVERLEY NOVEL 1940 DEDICATION • We, the Senior Class of 1940, dedicate this, “The Waverley Novel,” to Miss Anna Smith, our first teacher. She taught us how to work and how to play. How well we remember those holiday parties! She is beloved by us, her last class, for her sympathy, kindness, sincerity, and helpfulness. HONORING Anna Smith was born May 22, 1872, and reared at Jasper, Ohio. She secured her elementary and high school education in the Pike County schools and her professional training at Ohio University and at Wilmington College. She has devoted most of her spare time to church work, especially in Sunday School services, where she, at present, teaches a large class of boys and girls of high school age. However, she has also found time to take active part in various worthy organizations and to travel. Twenty-six years of her life have been spent in the schools of our county. Inasmuch as she was a splendid elementary teacher she has left indelible impressions on the minds and hearts of those fortunate enough to have had her as a teacher. Among her pupils, in addition to the graduating class of 1940, are many teachers of the present system and many outstanding citizens of Waverly and elsewhere. Donated By Senior Class of 1940 • The Waverley Novel is a book which has for its purpose the recalling of those memories of friendships, classes, honors, organizations, and happy days that we have earned and shared with our fellow students. Locan W CO Donated By Junior Class History Juniors EaRLY in the fall of 1929 the class, which is now the junior class of 1940, started to the Waverly Grade Schools under the supervision of Miss Gehres. In the fourth grade they presented the play, “The King Sneezes.” In the fifth grade they organized “The Sons and the Daughters of America” under the supervision of Mrs. Hoeckh. In high school they have been very active in sports, dramatics, and also in school work. In the freshman year they produced “Old Aunt Juresha” under the direction of Miss Kathryn Shy. In the sophomore year they produced “Miss Billy From Texas” under the direction of Mr. Bigony. Several students placed in the district elimination tests. In the junior year they produced “Nathan Hale” under the direction of Miss Shy. We are hoping that our junior class play will be a great success. Sophs History of Sophomore Class Our SOPHOMORE class of Waverly High is very aggressive. We have more straight A students in our class than in any other. Two of us are regular players on the varsity basketball team. Many are members of the band and Glee Club. Many hold scholastic records. Those remaining from the first grade are: Katherine Moore, Dave Way, Esther Mae Keiser, Earl Litterst, Charles Haynes, Jake Kalfs, Virginia Barch, Jane Ewing, George Armbruster, George Diley, Imogene Moore, Eileen Miller, Eugene Oyer. We sit quietly by and study while the juniors rush around upsetting everybody as they get ready for their class play, “The Fixer.” We are watching out of the corner of our eyes the seniors working madly on the yearbook. But just wait! Our day is coming! Donated By Pauline Oyer, Mary Way, Elizabeth Arnett 1 1 ] I 1 I J I ? ! J 1 I ] I Freshman Class History Frosh’ THE FRESHMAN class of 1940 is the largest class in the school, ninety students to be exact. The upper classmen called us “green” at the beginning, but now they can take that back. During the year, we had several boys on the basketball and football teams, and as for class work — well! Our scholastic teams were all on the top of the lists. Why, there is no limit to our abilities. We wish the freshman class of 1941 loads of luck while we’re breaking records in our sophomore year. Eighth Grade History Eighth E HAVE a total enrollment of seventy-one pupils in the eighth grade. The eighth grade students have contributed their talents to the George Rogers Clark, Betsy Ross, Clara Barton, and Admiral Byrd patriotic organizations; to A and B bands; and to basketball. James Sparks, June George, Kathleen Eggers, and Rachel Carter have withdrawn. Our new pupils are Virginia Ingram and Zelma Davis. Grade Seventh Grade History Seventh In SEPTEMBER of 1939 fifty-nine boys and girls anxiously entered the high school building for the first time as students. They have enjoyed being here because they have worked hard and have always had a friendly rivalry in all of their class work. Ambitious students always succeed. Mrs. Hoeckh directed the organization of two patriotic clubs: “The Virginia Dare” and the “Columbus” clubs of Junior American Citizens. Responsible program committees have presented interesting programs at each meeting. Mary Ewing and George Dixon took part in the Flag Ritual rendered at the regular D. A. R. meeting held in January at the home of Mrs. Myrtle Johnson. Grade New students who entered during the year were: Phyllis Hartmus, Ivan Hoyer, Juanita Claytor, and Earl Leeth. Those who withdrew were: Clyde Carter, Minnard Keiser, Junior Campbell, and Jane Helmintoller. Donated. By S. B. Donated By Mr. Bigony The Hi-Lites have completed seventeen years of service in Waverly High School. The staffs have always tried to create and maintain a sympathetic relationship between the home and school by mirroring Waverly’s many activities in our columns. We exchange with twenty papers and have gone beyond the boundaries of our state, even as far as California. Unless directly connected with a school publication, one does not realize the magnitude of the project. However, the Business, the Circulation, and the Editorial departments, working together in perfect harmony, have made this project a success. We have received fine cooperation from everyone, especially in emergencies. The members are unanimous in wishing to express appreciation to the entire school and community for a successful year. They also have produced many others for experimentation and for pleasure. Photo Club This club is composed of members of the Freshman and Sophomore Latin classes. The members must be enrolled in vocational agriculture and receive a major vote of the chapter. The purposes for which the organization is formed are: to develop rural leadership, to create a love for country life, to encourage cooperation, to promote scholarship, to improve home surroundings, and to aid rural recreational activities. Our chapter was organized November 19, 1934, by R. O. McFerren. Under our present advisor, Robert D. Campbell, the enrollment numbers 32. We willingly assume our duties and are justly proud of our club. The club is organized for the purpose of keeping abreast with the current topics of the days. The meetings are held at the home of our history instructor, Mr. Helman. We use as a basis for our study “Our Times” and the “World News of the Week.” Our discussions have been both profitable and pleasant. Donated By Charles Shrader The choral organizations in Waverly High School consist of a girls’ glee club, boys’ glee club, and mixed chorus directed by Mr. Shrader. Each club has two weekly rehearsals; the two clubs are combined to form a mixed chorus for one weekly rehearsal. These groups are available for school functions at all times. Membership is open to all high school students. All three groups are represented in the County Music festival. The combined clubs make their final appearance each year at the Baccalaureate Service. The Waverly High School band, under the direction of Mr. Shrader, is rapidly developing into a well balanced group. With the cooperation of the Board of Education and with money which the band has earned, several new instruments have been purchased in the past two years. Many capable students are now coming into the band from the elementary school, and are replacing the vacancies made by graduation. All instruction in school is given free. During the past year, several ensembles and soloists have been trained, all of whom made a creditable showing in the district contests. The band has appeared at numerous athletic events, the style show, and the Hallowe’en parade sponsored by the Retail Merchants’ Association. It will furnish the music for all commencement week activities, and will close the year with its annual appearance in the Memorial Day parade. One of the joyous events of the school year was the presentation of the merry farce, “The Fixer,” by the junior class on April 25. The Fixer “fixed” things with a vengeance. When his victims told him the truth and begged him to undo his “fixing,” he simply laughed and continued to “fix” until they were smothered under an avalanche of perplexing conditions. THE GRID SEASON . . . • PHILIP BARTRAM — Half Back Philip was the fastest man on the squad; a regular for three years and a hard driving runner who will be hard to replace next fall. Phil was Co-Captain. • DAVE JOHNSON — End Dave was a hard tackling and blocking end. He was always in the thick of battle. Dave will be missed next year. He was also Co-Captain. • HENRY MURPHY — Half Back Murphy finally found himself this fall and played a fine game of football both on offense and defense. We are sorry to see him go. • HOWARD ANDERSON — Tackle Howard also found himself and developed into a real aggressive lineman. A hard charger and sure tackier. His place will be hard to fill next year. • OLLIE DEACON — Tackle This was Ollie’s first year as a regular. However, he proved himself to be a real player and will be missed next year. • CHARLES HOFFMAN — Although Charles did not make the first team, he was a hard loyal worker and gave his best. Wish he could be with us next year. • JIM SCOTT — Center Hard luck seems to follow Jim, but when he plays he is a fighting player you like to watch. Better luck next year. •IVAN SCOTT — Guard Ivan playing his first year developed into a real guard, proving that hard work will always be rewarded. He should be a stone wall next fall. • KARL SCHMITT — Guard Smitty was the heaviest man on the team and was full of chatter on the field. He kept the boys in good spirits; will be a big help next year. • HENRY LOGAN — Tackle Henry will be a great help to the team next year. He has plenty of the old scrap. • JIMMY McCOY — Half Back Jim should prove to be a real half-back next year. He really likes to play. Good luck to him. • ORVAL ARNETT — Quarter Back Orval will be a big help next year. With one years experience he should really go places next fall. • BOB KEISER — End Bob has been a regular for two years. He is a real tackle and blocker. Good luck to him next year. • EMERSON ARGABRIGHT — Full Back Duke, the full back should really travel next fall if he doesn’t step over a com row. We expect great things of him for the next two years. • CHARLES HAYNES — Center Doc, the handy man played all positions in the line. Should be a big help for the next two years. • DAVE WAY — Half Back Dave should develop into a fine kicker and passer next year. He also has two more years and we are exDecting a lot from him. • EVERETT EGGERS — Guard Rusty was a fine lineman. We are sorry to lose him. Wish him luck in his army duties. • ROBERT CUTLER — End Bob should develop into a real player next fall. • PAUL DURHAM “Bull” should develop into a fine lineman next fall. Glancing quickly over the front page, I was attracted by a silvery lake nestling among wooded hills. Surely I must be seeing things, “Lake White, Ohio’s most exclusive playground and home of Richard Sines, the new U. S. Ambassador to Argentina.” Familiar places and faces flashed through my mind. Eagerly I now began to scan the front page of the Waverly Daily, edited by Henry Murphy, for more familiar names and places. “Charles Clark, philanthropist leaves $500,000 gift to the new hospital — Mabel Shaw, world’s most famous surgeon, head of the institution — Dr. Bill Deacon — nurses, Pauline Rider and Virginia Miller —.” I turned over several sport pages to look at — Ah! Philip Bartram, looking more handsome than ever. So Phil was still making football history in the professional field. Surely the society page would bring forth revelations: “Misses Merle Lytton and Lavina Ford, lovely models show latest creations by designer, Emma Howard, at a tea for famous attorney, Bessie D. Moore — hostess, glamour girl, Joan McGowan.” I’m holding my breath as I read such items: “Whirlwind to Mars — pseudo-scientific novel — Orson Wells, interviews author, Edith Pope — In field of non-fiction — Wallace Yeager — The Nazi Corpse—I thought we burned that “guy” long ago in Mr. Helman’s class. “Mr. Robert Brown — recently from Edinburg — research work of historical background of Macbeth — recognized by Oxford University. Georgia Nichols publishes new textbook on foods.” So the world still loves its orchestras: “Marie Peery, featuring her beloved trombone — captivates audience.” Another pleasant surprise! “Nick Lazar and his Hawaiians — the new Mexican Supper Club operated by Dick Stahler.” Perhaps he got the idea from the class play we gave. More thrills and trills: “New score made in musical world — Helen Woods, soprano — Metropolitan. — Judy Guth warbles nightly, Bringing Back Memories over WHST —.” Delighted I read on. “Marilyn Jackson’s new musical comedy — Doris Williams, song bird sensation — Mary Cofer fills vacancy left by Ethel Watters — Esther Steward, tragedian — eventually to local playhouse Latest creations always attract me. “New slenderizing lines — at Claud:a’s — Georgianna selects these intriguing models from Paris, London, New York ___ All the world loves a columnist. Opal, true to past history, “Sees All. Hears All, Tells All.” Does she ever miss? “Howard Anderson, head of Waverly Business College — to Anna Stanton, his secretary. Mary Ann Givens holds long distance — from Miami to Ollie Deacon, mine prospector, Sitka. Divorce — soon by Cathern Rapp against Joe Patterson — cruelty. Bill Scott, Chas. Miller, and A. Lawson, in full cowboy regalia,—singing, No more Roamin’. Dave Johnson, big game hunter — complains of scarcity — in South Africa. Charles Hoffman, manager of local theater brings back our own talent, Bernice Mahone, “Mousie,” who was able to pull tricks out of an empty bag even during her high school days — magician —.” “Pardon me, Miss Whitten, but you seem to find my Waverly News very interesting.” Startled by hearing my own name. I looked up. There stood my pilot, Virgil Trainer. We always said he should have wings put on his car. I returned his paper to him and we took off. Back to Hollywood again — Homeward bound at last. Henry Murphy Class Colors — Black and White Class Motto “We are conquerers of all things” The class of 1940 started its school life under the supervision of Miss Anna Smith. The following students were members of the original class: Richard Stahler, Jean Whitten, Helen Woods, Bernice Mahone, Judy Guth, David Johnson, Charles Hoffman, Henry Murphy, Bessie D. Moore, Wallace Yeager. The teachers throughout the school years were the following: Miss Anna Smith, Mrs. Ethel Greenbaum, Miss Isabelle Miller, Miss Helen Armbruster, Mr. Oscar Raidiger, Mr. Earl Corn, Miss Dorothy Andre, and Mrs. Louisa Hoeckh. Four years ago the class of 1940 entered Waverly High School as freshmen with an enrollment of sixty-six. Last year under the supervision of Miss Katherine Shy, they presented the Junior Class Play, “Beyond Reason,” which was their means of getting money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. This class has been very active in music, athletics, and scholastics. By hard work, persevran-e. and determination the goal has been reached. May we always hold sacred the memories of the Class of 1940 and may we all strive ever to advance.
