CLASS COLORS CLASS FLOWER Deep Rose and Silver Red ROSS Twelve years ago a graduation was held in the Waverly High school auditorium, an unusual one, for it was a kindergarten graduation, After this unique beginning, the class continued its way through grade school, junior high, and high school, and on May 23, 1960, graduated a second time. Miss Martens, the teacher of the class at the time of their first graduation, sent her best wishes and congratulations on their high school commencement, The class of 1960 was indeed an active one. Among their achievements as juniors was the production of the play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, and the sponsoring ofa Junior-Senior Banquet and prom, Chez Parcel' The style of class rings was also changed through their efforts as juniors. The varied talent in the class has been displayed in many ways this year, The Broadway production Craig's Wife was presented as the senior class play, Many outstanding records were compiled in areas including sports, music, and dramatics. The original cover on this year's annual was designed by James Carver,Ourhigh academic standing was observed at commencement when it was announced that 13 in the class had maintained a B plus or higher average through four years ofhigh school, About 45 of the 98 graduates will enter college this fall, As a gift from the class this year, a Stereo-l-li-Fi console was presented to the school to be used at class parties and later transferred to the new school, We, the Senior class of 1960, take this opportunity to thank our parents teachers, and friends for their guidance in preparing us to take our places in society. 5 , 1 JU IOR CLASS Mr. Sovereign, Mr. Thompson, Dillon. At 2:30 in the afternoon the student body, along with many parents and alumni, met in the auditorium for the assembly, at which,T eff Cleveland, mayor of student council, crovmed Mary Monaghan, a senior 1959 Home- coming queen. Laura Marsh, a senior, and Sandy Rosenau, a junior, were the queen's attendants, with Sandy Gam- baiani, Sandy Larson, Marjorie Jensen, Kendra Mueller and Sharon Dewey making up the remainder of the queen's court, The stage was done in a beautiful silver-blue court scene, Don Berry was guest speaker for the event and Jerry Sullivan was team speaker, The parade was held following the assembly. Junior class took first place with their float, with Masquers and FFA second and third places, 'I'he football team came through with another 44-26 victory over Decorah to make the day complete. Following the game, 'the dance was held at Irving featuring the Esquires. Because of the many hours of planning by our student council and the cooperation of each student and faculty member, 1959 Homecoming was a success in every way, 41- ir IM HARVEST B LL It was a cold snowy evening the night of November 14, but the atmosphere at the Harvest Ball was warm and friendly, The decorations of corn shocks, bales of hay, and r,eal log fences truly made the setting au- thentic for the evening of square dancing. During the intermission, Bonnie Stufflebeam was crowned 1959 Harvest Ball Queen. Other entertainment was also provided during the intermission. Under the capable leadership ofMartBrandes, assisted by Herb Thompson, the Go-Hawks rolled to a 7-1 season record. Off to a running start the Go-Hawks trimmed Marion 25-6 in the opening game. In the following weeks they ran their record to 6-0 with winning scores of 26-0, 39-6, 27-0, 44-26, and 39-O, Then, when trying to go for the conference champion- ship and their seventh straight win they ran into a tough Charles City team. On a rain-soaked and muddy field the Go-Hawks lost to the Comets by al2-O score, Not to be outdone, however, the Waverly team trimmed Columbus High of Waterloo the following week by a 44-O score, The last game of the season was cancelled due to a heavy snowfall. In the course of most football campaigns a team playing at home field is traditionally tougher than a team playingaway from home. The Go-Hawks disproved this theory when they outscored their opponents 136 to 0 while playing away from home. At the end of the season Mike Carver, Bill Westendorf, Jim Carver, Gerald Sullivan, Monte Briner, Dave Rowray, and LenAcker- mann were named to the all-conference team, Sullivan and Brimer as repeat selections. Mike Carver was named to the 2nd all-state team and Bill Westen- dorf, Gerald Sullivan, and Monte Briner received All-State honorable mention. Mike Carver and Bill Westendorf were also named to the WMT-TV All Collegian honor roll.
