Sort of hard and embarrassing to think about those frosh daysl fThe less said the betterll We were about the greenest, most confused, and least inconspicuous class that had ever startled the faculty at W.H.S., I guess. Go-Hawk Town was one maze of confusing halls after another, all leading to the wrong room. Remember? lNow we could find our way around blindfo1ded.l Our Frosh year is still more or less a confusion to me - I remember almost nothing about that awe-ful year except Rose Kepler's rendition of The Little Fishies - I'll never forget thatl Pete Koch, our present Cassanova, was just another chubby fellow from a farm and the inimitable Soup Heist was just another of the Heist boys. Ah, but then we became Sophomoresl We were no longer confused, indeed, we felt ourselves extremely smoothl That was the year Dot Becker joined our merry throng. We really started doing stuff 'n things then. There was Milly Bartlett, our wonderful soprano, and many of our gals were drum majorettes. Then almost the entire golf team was sophomores and it was a mighty good team, tool That was the first year our marching band got one in the National. Even though Jeep Boedecker fell down and sprained his ankle, we marched on to victory! But as Juniors we really came into our own. Remember the Carnival - how could we forget it? Spending the entire Saturday putting up booths and rehearsing the side show, etc. I won't ever forget that side show, will you? - especially that barber shop quartettel And how we all escorted Mr. Cogswell down to the bank in the wee hours on Saturday morning. Then there was the Junior-Senior Banquet. I still see stars every time I close my eyes and I probably shall for the rest of my life - all the cutting and pasting silver stars on blue streamers. The best part came when the two oh-so-cynical seniors told us it was the best everl And then last summer, one of the saddest things that ever happened to this class - Kurt's death. We've all missed him so much this yearl He was always the life of the party! Remember last fall how we argued and bickered about the annual? They were fun, though, all those debatesl Next came the work on the annual this year and finally the thrill of having the last copy go off to the publisher. Remember all those Saturday morning confabs when we got such a kick out of some of the features. And now we're through. Commencement's coming up, and high school is over for us. Daily as you go down the halls, you hear some one say, How will they ever get along without us? Strangely enough, they will, they always do, but I honestly don't see how 1- I CAN YOU Paul Koch not mouthing off in any class Art Zahn beating the tardy bell by more than 3 seconds Dorothy Becker not in a hurry Eleanor Montgomery without gum Myrt Strotman not flirting Mildred Bartlett without 7-up Grazian without her knitting Helen Simmons stepping out Harm twins not together The cheerleaders getting to class on time Ed Ford not bragging Penny Swenson without make-up Jim Strotman wearing rubber heels The annual staff getting anything done - especially featuresll Verla Schoof not arguing herself clear IMAGINE Shirley Chandler not sitting beside a boy in speech class Hazel Knepper without a stack of library books Orville Oltrogge playing the piccolo Kasemeier not laughing at his own iokes Phyllis Holley not being jealous Davie Fangmeier without a nick-name Hanna Knappe not lugging a torch Charles Uecker thinking himself wrong Stieger and Shirmer quiet at basketball games Donald Baker not having trouble with his love life Kam not teasing someone Corrine Luloff without half socks Miss Hamil without her blue slips. -16.. The Brain Derby found them represented by Nadine Osincup, Wilma Arns, and Paul Bruns. Dick Leslie was their member of the Student Council while Geneva Bergman was the candidate for Carnival Queen. To lead them for 1942 they elected Eugene Bowdish, president, Nadine Osincup, vice president, Paul Bruns, secretary, Ed Ford, treasurer, and Miss Harding and Mr. Clatterbaugh, advisers. Their Student Council representative is Jim Strotman. The B basketball squad, composed mainly of Sophomores, won the Northwest Iowa Conference with an undefeated record. They adjusted quickly to their new surroundings and chose officers and sponsors as follows: Dick Morton, president, Shirley Strotman, vice president, Don Brandt, secretary, Bill Engelbrecht, treasurer, Miss Schirmer and Mr. Hammerer, sponsors. Most of the freshmen took part in as many activities as the upper classmen and many of them received recognition as a result of their efforts. Don Brandt received his varsity letter in football after only one year experience. The freshmen were also well represented on the B basktball squad. A FOOTBALL The 1941 Go-Hawks won 3, lost 5, and tied 1 of its regularly scheduled football games, under the leadership of their new coach, K. L. Clatterbaugh. Although this year's season could not be classed as very successful, hopes are high tor a good season next year. Of the eighteen letter winners on the squad, only sevenare seniors. Consequently there will be a wealth of material to build a squad for the coming season. Those lost to the squad by graduation are John Parson, .lack Tegtmeier, Don Bailey, Dick Wiederanders, Charles Uecker, Glenn Koepke, and Keith Koch. The outstanding game of the season was Waverly's upset victory over a previously undefeated, untied squad from Cedar Falls. Keith Koch was named honorary captain of the squad for the season. Team Record 0 NEW HAMPTON - WAVERLY 0 Although Waverly outplayed the heavier New Hampton team, they tailed to cash in on their opportunities to score. ' 0 DECORAH - WAVERLY 6 Waverly Won its first conference game at the expense of Decorah. Hard blocking and tackling were evident throughout the game. This win gave Waverly an even break in conference competition. -256 6 CRESCO - WAVERLY 0 A strong Cresco ball club stopped the Waverly attack completely while scoring once themselves, to defeat the Go-Hawks 6 to 0. 39 OSAGE - WAVERLY 0 Waverly stopped Osage's line plays but could not stop their devastating end runs. During the second half, Osage scored almost at will. 6 CEDAR FALLS - WAVERLY 12 With Eggleston pitching the passes and Strotman, Parson, and Droste catching them, Waverly bounced back from their defeat of the week before to defeat a previously undefeated, unscored upon eleven from downtown Cedar Falls. 26 CHARLES CITY - WAVERLY 0 The Go-Hawks disappointed the fans from home by letting the Comets outcharge and outfight them throughout the entire game. 7 TEACHERS' HIGH - WAVERLY 0 The Go-Hawks lost a heartbreaker to the Little Tutors from Cedar Falls. One sustained drive, climaxed by crossing the goal line with less than a minute to play, gave them the deciding edge. 0 REINBECK - WAVERLY 12 Waverly finally got back into the win column. Reinbeck did not have much to offer in an offensive way, but were stubborn on defense. 39 OELWEIN - WAVERLY 0 Oelwein climaxed a great football season by drubbing Waverly 39 to 0, and thus gained undisputed possession of the conference crown with a record of 5 wins and no losses.
