The sixtyfthree passengers, somewhat awed by the enormity of the undertaking but none the less determined, were on their way, the beginning of a long journey-the joumey of a Higher Education. They knew the flight was a long one, that it would grow monotonous at times, that concentrated effort and hard work was the fuel needed by the craft, The Old High School, but were willing to endure their hardships to reach their goal. Miss Fry was the pilot of the plane, Charles Lowder was chief mechanic fpresif dentj, Norman Studier was ,second mechanic fvice presidentl, Norman Studier was radio operator Qsecretaryf, and Paul Gallagher reporter Qtreasurerj. The first stretch of the journey, over the land called Freshman, was made with surprisingly little difficulty. The only mishap was an electrical storm, commonly known as Algebra, but this was braved by the hardy Knowledge Seekers under the guidance of the pilot. By the fall of '26 the dirigible, Old High School, was abandoned, for it was no longer considered safe. Some beams were decaying and the floor shaky and was too small to comfortably accommodate the large number of passengers. The new craft, The New High School, had all the equipment lacking in the old one. Mr. Leatsler consented to pilot the new ship. Norman Studier chief mechanic, Elda Walthers second mechanic, Ruth Holmes radio operator, and Harold Broderson reporter, made up the rest of the crew. On this trip the country of Sophomore was safely passed. For a time the dirigible was lost in a dense fog in the form of Geometry, but, with many breathftaking risks and daring exploits, the propositions and theorems were mastered and the ship again sailed in clear sky. To celebrate this event a picnic was held in Brooks' Woods. During the third year the settlement of Junior was left behind. Mr. Leatsler, because of his great success in helping to conquer the fog, was again chosen as pilot. Charles Lowder was chief mechanic, Ann Leary second mechanic, Lloyd Bevans radio operator, and Beth Hill was reporter. For the amusement of the passengers, and others, a few of the talented gave a play, What's in a Sign. It was hugely enjoyed by all, the citizens of the various countries coming to see it. Looking down from the heights the only thing which marred the beautiful scenic landscape below was a curious combination of what looked like a mixture of curves, circles, half circles, dashes and straight lines. It was later discovered that this phenomenon was Shore hand. As the ship neared the edge of the junior Settlement a huge banquet, the juniorfSenior Banquet, a connecting link between the two divisions, was justly celef brated and a gala time was had by all. Students from Sophomore served as waitresses and waiters. Now, at the close of the fourth year, the giant dirigible is nearing its goal, Graduation. The path of the plane, Education, is almost completed. Flying over the huge ocean, called Senior, the aircraft is piloted by Miss Rice, with Norman Studier chief mechanic, Ann Leary as second mechanic, Hildegard Frese as radio operator, and Jerry Sullivan as reporter, making up the rest of the crew. The band decided to make a record of their trip, as well as other points of interest among the other colonies, so the Annual Staff was appointed and the Periscope of '29 was published. As we recall our trip during the past four years we remember the good times we have had in both the Old and the New High Schools and are glad, indeed, that it was our privilege to attend and take part in all the features. Our only regret is that on our next journey of Life we must go alone on separate trails but we shall always carry and cherish our memories and ideals obtained on our flight of Higher Education. On this day I was careful to be punctual, as I did not wish fPage 271 to miss seeing the great inventor whose famous works, such as the electrical mouse trap setter, pancake turner and clothesline stretcher had become household necessities. But he was still trying to harness atomic energy. The maid ushered me in and I found the inventor dozing in an easy chair. He started up at my approach, greeted me cordially, and immediately began to recall the days when we were home townersn together. We had not been talking five minutes when the maid announced that a Mr. Sullivan had called. The inventor sprang to his feet. Not jerry Sullivan? he asked. Did he give his first name? I don't know, sir, replied the maid. I'll see. A moment later she ushered in a man and a lady, accompanied by two little girls with bright red hair. Of course, we recognized Jerry at once, but it took a few moments for us to make certain that the lady with him was Martha Kennedy. jerry told us that he had been a True Story writer now for sometime. Charles a.nd I didn't wonder at that, because we remembered that he could write notes better than any one else in school. It came out that he and his wife and children were on their way to a summer resort where jerry could find something to write about because he had run out of scandal and really didn't know what to buy his new car on. Finally, I felt impelled to tell some news, so I said, I hear the Class of 1929 is going to have a reunion at Waverly day after tomorrow. Is that so? said Charlie. I haven't seen the old town now for seventeen years. Oh, I'd like to go! exclaimed Martha. ' How can we? asked Gerald. We've got to get hold of some scandal for that next confession of mine. Scandal! I exclaimed. You'll find just as much around Waverly as you'll find at any summer resort! I guess you're right, said Charles. Let's go! You remember Bruns-Richie Bruns? Well, he's got a flying field near here. I'Il bet he'd take us to the reunion. As he spoke he picked up an umbrella from the table, quickly opened it and motioned for us to be quiet. I had to ask, VVhat's that? Some new kind of radio? Radio! said Charlie scornfully. Nothing so oldffashioned as that! This is another invention of mine-a bumblegraph I call it. He quickly got in touch with Bruns who said that he was feeling just a little homesick for Waverly himself and said that he guessed he could easily spare a few days to take the gang up. After a frenzied hour or so we were all ready to go. We all met at Charles' house before we went to the field. We were just ready to leave when Charles gave a jump and ran back to his bumblegraph. We waited and listened while he said, Hello, Marty, I almost forgot all about you. The gang is here ready to go to Waverly to the class homecoming. Can you go? Rush along then and we'll meet you at the flying field. On the way to the field Charlie told us about Marty. It seems that after Marty graduated she went to Chicago and joined a show. They were making a great success, when the manager ran away with all of the receipts and left them, stranded. After that Marty had joined a night club as a dancer. She and Charles had been married soon after that, but she wasn't around home much, as she spent a lot of time at the cabaret teaching girls to dance. We arrived in Waverly six hours later. Richie Bruns had already wired con- cerning our coming, so we were not surprised to find a group of people out at the field to see Richie's powerful 120fpassenger plane. A very young woman, or at least she appeared as such, whom we recognized as Eleanor Beyer, was introduced as the mayor of Waverly, and made a short speech of welcome. She later told us that she ran a beauty parlor as a pastime besides performing her duties as mayor. On the way to town we passed a mammoth roadhouse. We were told that it was run by Arlean Luesenhop. She had been married four times, had been divorced four times, and was planning on making Had Broderson, the town's most popular tonsorial artist, husband number five. After so much information, we stopped to I:Page 28:1 see her, partly for jerry's sake, as he said he wanted to see what she looked like after having so much matrimonial grief. The first people we ran on to were Stew and Bert, who were roadhouse entertainers. Bert sang and Stew did sleightfof-hand tricks. We ate some sandwiches while Stew and Bert danced an Apache dance for us. , As we passed through the huge traffic jams on Bremer Avenue we noticed a skyscraper with a large sign Ginther E? Gallagher Packing Co., Inc. It was later learned that Paul had finally married Ann Leary after a romance lasting five years. Roger Ginther was still waiting for Grace Miller to get over her broken romance with Glen Woodruff. They further elucidated the information that Glen was running a wallpaper factory in town and was still the town dandy, although it was suspected that he wore a wig. As we went past the State Bank of Waverly, we noticed a sign, Harold Albright, Cashier, although he was much more interested in the doings of the Rotary Club, which was now putting on a campaign to reduce the city smoke nuisance. We went to the new Hotel Clevenger for rooms and were astonished to see Wendell Ormston and Kenneth Pape rush up and grab our grips. Wendell said that ever since he had been elected High School cheer leader he had never been com fortable out of a uniform and so turned bellhop permanently. He told us that Florence Babcock owned the hotel and that Ellen Rew was one of the chamber maids. The next morning we went to call on Wynona Nolte, who had become im- mensely wealthy by her invention and sales of Flapper Fannie Face Cream. She agreed to accompany us to the banquet late that afternoon. When we arrived, we found that Bill Coffin had come from Chicago under protection of three of the best gunmen in America, to serve as toastmaster. After Bill had taken Scarface Al Capone for a ride in 1945, he had held complete sway over the liquor racket in the Windy City. We had barely gotten our hats hung up when Lydia Becker had already cornered a group and was reftelling them all the gory details of her operation. Bill Coffin had just begun a speech and was telling a joke when Jerry broke into a loud laugh and started running down the length of the hall. We watched and saw him grab Bill McHugh's hand and then slap him on the back. We were told that Bill was professor of sociology up at Wart' burg and that he and his colleagues had just returned from a long expedition to the South Seas, where they studied the sleeping habits of the Fiji Islanders. Among the speakers of the evening were Beth Hill, state superintendent of pub' lic instruction, Marie Dettmer, who was a returned missionary from India, and Wil- liam Quibell 3l IIDl7fI1, the famous comedy team who were cofstarring in Warner Brothers' new AllfTalkie, The Stinging Fool, which was being directed by Marie Benedix, who had to refrain from all violent exercise after a lion chewed her ear off while hunting wild game in East Congo. Charles was to have talked, but he excused himself, saying that he had sunburned his tonsils while gazing at the tall buildings in Waverly. After the banquet they elected Alumni officers for the next year. Helen Anhalt was elected president. I forgot to tell you that Helen had finally made the editorship of The Waverly Democrat. Fern Blodgett was elected secretary and treasurer. After this Jerry and Bill spent a long time discussing the time Mrs. Lennen took 20 per cent off their grades for wearing their hats in the building. just then someone came up and gave me an awful wallop on the back. I turned and saw Hildegarde Frese, wearing an aviator's helmet. She had just flown up from Mexicci where she was private secretary to Portes Gil. She spent a long time telling us of her revolutionary experiences. She had also brought Ruth Morrill and Mabel Med' ders with her, who had been teaching in Arizona. just then Bill McHugh began to laugh and pointed to the opposite side of the room. There were Carl Meyer and Lorenz Brandt in overalls. They were still farming and are known all over the world for their doublefpointed carrots, which they are raising in addition to keeping the slaughter house of Gallagher E? Ginther supplied with livestock. Paul told us that fPage 291 Norman Studier could not come because he didn't even have a suit to wear, after losing his entire fortune in Radio-Keith-Orpheum which went broke after its head- liners, Ruth Holmes and LaVon Bachtell were both murdered the same night by Arthur Noel, the ventriloquist, who couldn't stand to see either one of them go to night clubs with a different millionaire every night. By the time the banquet was over it was time to attend the big dance. The orchestra was none other than the famous seven-piece ladies' orchestra led by Edna Lambert. Helen Quibell played violin, Ruth Barnes played the sousaphone, Laura Bauer the saxophone, Dorothy Bills the clarinet, Helen Chambers the drums, Edith Green the cornet, and Viola Hall the piano. Someone yelled, Let's have an old-fashioned square dance! Edna Lambert called upon Lloyd Bevans, who was in the airplane business at Plainfield, to call the dances. Then Leonard Stacy, who was coach at Wartburg, said that we would then be entertained by a few songs from the famous Melodious Blue Quartette which was composed of Erna and Esther Westendorf, first and second sopranosg Ardith Wheeler, contralto, and Elda Walther, alto. They then sang several numbers which were composed by Erwin Wedemier, who is known the world over for his songs and poems of country life. Ruth Cooper then read a chapter from her new novel and after we joined in the l'Loyalty Song we started for our own homes. Dress-Up Day The Senior Class enacted a clever advertising campaign. The Cold Dust Twins, Aunt Jemima Pancake Flour, Old Dutch Cleanser, and Georgie Porgie Breakfast Food were but a few of the interesting ads impersonated by the Seniors. Herr Louie's Hungary Five rendered many pleasing selections during the course of the day, which was accredited as being one of the most successful Dressfup Days ever put on by a Senior Class. H. The story deals with three pals who live together and adopt a charming girl as a sister. She keeps house for them and wins the admiration of everyone, but the boy she loves does not reciprocate, so she disapf pears. The landlady and her husband, of whom she says, Aggravatin' as he is, ya can't help lovin' the ould fool, furnish an abundance of Irish wit, while the Amer- icanization of Emmy Mopupus is a revelation in humor. The situations and clever lines with which the play abounds, make it deservedly one of the best comedy hits of the decade. MISS DUKE, Director. fPage 301 Commencement Program Processional .... ..... L' 31 LAPORTE CITY 29-VJAVERLY 4 Uanuary 18, 19291 A smoothfworking aggregation from LaPorte City clearly outplayed the home team all during the game, not allowing them a single field goal. Waverly's play was far below par as it was, while, with their greater experience and teamwork, the visitors ran wild to ring up twentyfnfne points. NASHU.A 13-WAVERLY 12 fFebruary 2, 19291 Nashua nosed out Waverly by a onefpoint margin in a game which showed how really poor a friendly athletic contest can be made. The affair, played at Nashua. was very rough and was of the variety that a team should not feel bad to lose. The score was close, however, and not until the final gun was the game decided. WAVERLY 14-JANESVILLE 12 fFebruary 4, 19291 In a close and exciting contest Janesville was nosed out by two points in a game at the Waverly High gym. The score was tied at 5 to 5 at the half with the visitors playing an aggressive game. The home team was more cautious and attempted to work in for surer shots but managed to gain an edge in the last few minutes. OELwE1N 274W.4vERLY 8 QFebruary 13, 19291 Oelwein's classy teamwork and rangy players proved too much for the home team. The losers showed improvement but were unable to snap out of it and play basket ball. The less experienced players got a chance to taste battle and showed up so well that they were assured of more play in the future. LAPORTE CITY 27fWAVERLY 12 fFebruary 8, 19291 Waverly High School gave LaPorte City a tough battle at LaPorte City. Fref quently they held a lead on the home team and threatened continuously. The entire first half was quite even but in the second, LaPorte pulled away to gain a safe margin after pulling the Waverly defense out of position. SUMNER 254WAvERLY 14 fFebruary 11, 19291 For three quarters the Waverly team put up a good brand of basket ball but blew up in the fourth quarter to lose by a decisive score. The score seefsawed back and forth, and at the end of the third quarter stood at 15 to 12 in Sumner's favor. The winners went hot in the last few minutes to push up the score. SUMNER 17-WAVERLY 10 fFebruary li, 19291 Sumner defeated Waverly for the second time during the season. Both defenses worked well and long shots were necessary for the scores. The game became rough at times and a lastfminute rally by Waverly fell short when it seemed the opponents might be overtaken. The visitors chalked up their tries with too much regularity, however, to be beaten. CEDAR FALLS l8+W.AVERLY 15 fFebruary 19, 19291 The Waverly High School cagers played another close game at Cedar Falls, At the end of the first quarter they held a cnefpoint lead and also at the half. But the Lawn City cagers came back with grim determination to outs:ore Waverly by four points in the second half and taste revenge for the defeat they suffered earlier in ,the season. WAVERLY ZZYOELWEIN 21 fFebruary 20, 19291 The Old Gold cagers upset predictions to turn back the strong Celwein team on the latter's floor. Leading 15' to 10 at the half, the Waverly team held to their lead tenaciously, working the ball in for close shots and tossing through distant tries with disheartening effect on their opponents. Oelwein's brawn failed to cope with Waverly's fight. COUNTY TOURNAMENT AT SUMNER WAVERLY 'ZSYDENVER 19 QFcbruary 22, 19291 The local squad went through the first round of the County Tournament by fPage 54:1 downing Denver. Playing against probably the fastest team in the tournament, the Old Gold players were taxed to the limit to come through with a win but settled down to basket ball and defeated the smooth, fastfworking Denver team. TRlPoLl 23fe'W.xxfERLi' 10 fliebruary 23, 19291 The team showed the effects of its strenuous game the night before. Shots ref fused to connect and the Waverly aggregation failed to score enough points to offset the highfscoring Tripoli offense. In a lastfminute spurt the visitors forged ahead still further to pile up the score and eliminate Waverly from the finals. VJAVERLY 17djANEsv1L1.13 15 fFebruary 23, 19291 Waverly won the right of third place in the county run by defeating Janesville in a thrilling encounter. They started slow but as the first half drew to a close the score was tied at 7 to 7. Waverly slipped and at the beginning of the fourth quarter the score stood 13 to 8 against them. With a final rally they scored nine points to the opponents' two in the last quarter and won the contest. WAVERLY 26-SHELL Rock 13 flsebruary 26, 1929, For the first time of the season the Waverly basket ball team showed offensive power. The first half was quite even with the score 6 to 6 as the half ended. But in the second period the home team worked the ball in for repeated setfups and found little trouble in running up the score. SECTIONAL AT CEDAR FALLS WAVERLY l7A-CLARKSVILLE 10 QFebruary 28, 1929, Waverly advanced to the semiffinals of the Class A division by defeating Clarks' ville with little trouble. It was a scrappy affair all the way through, with the victors having the upper hand continuously, but never a more than comfortable lead. Clarks ville staged a final rally but was unable to offset Waverly's margin, leaving the latter to advance to the semi-finals. WEST VVATERLoo 15-WAVERLY 13 QMarch 1, 19295 In the last game of the season the team came through with a fine exhibition of basket ball. Both defenses functioned perfectly and neither team was able to work the ball in for setfups. Both teams resorted to long shots for scores and the outcome was a tossfup from beginning to end. The opponents, however, simply got the lucky basket. ,-.Y -WQELYF. Coach Smith Expresses His Opinions Captain Charles Lowder QCharleyj, performing in his final year, played his usually consistent game at guard which has featured his play for two seasons. He showed unusual defensive ability and was always in the way of the offensive team. Stuart VanDorn fStewj, the other graduating regular of the squad, was a valuf able member, playing center and running guard during the season. Stew was especially fond of setups around the foul circle. Clarence Morgan fMorgj, playing his second year at forward, proved to be the nlongfshot artist of the squad. With two more years to play Morg should be one of the best men ever turned out at Waxierly High. Leland Hutchinson fHutchj, handicapped during the early season, made a ref markable record during the latter part, especially at the tournaments. Hutch will be back again next year. Lester Boorom, playing his first year on the hardwood floor as a regular, showed fPage 551 1435 III il.. IOUI H1 I -x xum In t It -XX DOIN I 1' Q IIIXS IPAQ QIINI HESINL N a c.. mf 1- , I- I I I L . SUMNER 23frhere-WAVERLY 28 Playing Sumner High for the first time the Waverly squad was at a loss to know their style of play. The opposition proved plentiful, however, and the game was never won until the gun cracked. A healthy lot of rooting kept the excitement at a high pitch and the Waverly squad was forced to its utmost throughout in order to leave for home with another scalp. OELWEIN 24'fh6T6-WAVERLY 23 The Old Gold and Black pointed for Oelwein as another victim but was nosed out in a very close, lastfminute spurt by the home team. Sickness had taken its toll during the week and the regular team was not in fighting form. The shopftown led at the half by 3 points but a determined comefback in the second period found Wav' erly in the lead a few seconds before the final whistle. Then another basket, in the nick of time left the visitors on the small end of the count. Su MN ER 11-he-re-WAVERLY 12 The Sumner aggregation came with the intention of stopping with nothing but victory. Their determined spirit kept the Waverly basketeers in hot water the entire game. Both teams displayed nice teamwork, with excellent guarding being good reason for the low score. The visitors got the jump in the first half and led by a two-point margin, while the Old Gold came back to lead by one point in the end. SHELL ROCK 11--here-Waverly 25 Waverly girls' team wound up the regular season by defeating Shell Rock for the second time. The winners were at no time pushed to the limit and the contest gave an opportunity for the inexperienced players to show their stuff. The veterans got going in fine style with their usual good play, but easy going prompted many substitutions. TOURNAMENT AT HAMPTON CHAPIN 19-WAVERLY 18 The team went to the Sectional with high hopes, only to lose the first contest by a disheartening onefpoint margin. It proved to be a great game from the spectators' standpoint and was hardffought from the opening whistle. Waverly held a four-point margin at the half but the winners outfscored them in the second period and eliminated Waverly from the tournament. It is with honest appreciation that the student body of Waverly High School looks upon that squad which so loyally stood up for W. H .S. And to those players who graduate, we hope that they may carry on their game of life with the same earnestness that they put forth in their basket ball. W the one Great Scorer comes to write against-your name, He writes not alien s you won or lost, butqhowb you played the game. a.-l4:,.,. Mary Farina, the Mascot Mary Farina was an important figure during the basket ball season. At every game one was sure to see this negro doll, pigtails tied with brilliant red ribbons and wearing a basket ball suit made like the ones the girls on the team wore. A large was resplendent on the front above the buckle of her old gold belt, while a num' ber 6 on the back of her tiny black suit distinguished her from the rest of the players. Her black e es rolled every time a basket was made, you could see them if you watched Y closely. Our little mascot was beloved by all, but especially by the team. MARY LADAGE, Guardian. l:Page 611 Vanity F air Vanity Fair was an Athletic Musical Comedy written by Mary O'Connell, and was presented by the Girls' Physical Training department, October 15. The money raised went towards buying basket ball suits. When the curtain was drawn a hat shop was seen and this was Vanity Fair as gay as could be. The various characters appeared in the hat shop looking for their type of hat. Florence Babcock and Ann Leary were the two salesladies and were certainly upftofdate salesladies both in manners and costumes. The owner of the shop was a distinguished-looking lady and the character was portrayed by Lorena Schiefelbein. The cash girl, who did justice to her part, was Ada VanDorn. The following came to visit the shop: College Graduate-Thelma Burton Movie Star-Margaret Taylor High School Girls-Irma Smay, Beulah Webster Young Widow+Rosella Sager Mother-Juanita Scott Child-Arlene Buhrow Society Girl-Hermoine Selensky Artist-Mary LaDage Irish Woman-Grace Miller BrideftofBe-Dorothy Tegtmeier Customer'-Esther Frese Russian Girl-La Von Bachtell There were ten choruses and they wore very clever costumes and were repref S6DtHt1V6 of the various characters: Amaryllis Body Beautiful Cash Girl Review School Days RahfRahfCollege Girls Artist Chorus Clown Dance Emerald Isle Russian Stamp Dance At the close Bonnie Miller did a Hat Box solo. The Prologue and Epilogue were read by Hildegard Frese. You see I was right, it was Vanity Fair, You will find the same scenes acted here, acted there. For my lady must dress in the fad of the day Though foolish the fashion that reigns in full sway. The curtain must fall, but you lift it at will, In each shop that you pass it's enacted there still. KP f . ffj ' Normal Training Club Diary TUESDAY, SEPT. 18, 1928 Our N. T. Club was really organized today for this year. When Mrs. Lennen mentioned it yesterday all the girls began to feel for their pins. You should have seen them all this morning. We left our election of officers until next Tuesday because we want the Junior girls there too. TUESDAY, SEPT. 25, 1928 We elected our officers today. Ada VanDorn, president, Kathleen Casper, vice president, Beth Hill, secretaryg and Florence Winzenburg, treasurer. Mrs. Lennen is our advisor and maybe you think we aren't glad she is. We're going to have a program soon. OCT. 12, 1928 Our Columbus program was given today. It was one that all the girls could use when they teach. Sure was good. Mrs. Lennen was tickled with it. DEC. 12, 1928 We had our Christmas party today. We've been planning and working on it for weeks. As usual we had little kids from the lower grades, on our program, and they surely did enjoy it. It seems good to think that we're having programs like this every Christmas, and then regular Celebration programs about twice a month. FRIDAY, MARCH 15, 1929 We had a St. Patrick's Day program today. It was one that could be worked out in a school. We had the cutest opening exercises. Ada and Bertha sang the cutest little song about St. Patrick. Every one thought it was so funny and I guess they thought so, too. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 1929 Seeing the Junior Class play tonight made one think of the play the Normal Training Club girls and Football boys gave last year. That was a great success, too, and we surely made a lot of money, I'll bet not all of the clubs could put on a play like that. MAY 31, 1929 I saved this page to write on the last day of school. All the kids feel so blue about leaving. And to think that we aren't going to plan any more programs for our club. But at least we know how to plan them. All the N. T. girls said today- Will you ever forget those programs we used to have? That used to sounds so long ago. But we won't ever forget all those good times, and especially what a brick Mrs. Lennen is. fPage 761 Munir fll' if ., s l P I in .if gf ., L gl! 3?
