FIRST ROW: Hugo, Prinzi, SECOND ROW: Blakeman, manager, McLean, Waite, Kinney, Van Horn, Myer,Line,Van Der Karr, Terwilliger, Hartford, Geppert, Bodine, manager, VARSITY BASKETBALL Congratulations to the Waverly High School Varsity team that did such a tre- mendous job during the 1953-54 basketball season. The team was confronted with two obstacles even before playing their first game . The first was the loss of such outstanding players as Fred Lincoln, Stub Terwilliger, Bill Creedon, and Bill Rolls. The second, was an unavoidable delay which cost many boys an invalu- able week's practice. Just ten practices after the last football game, the boys, under the coaching of Ray Miller, played a game which will be remembered in this valley for years to come. Trailing Johnson City, a team classed out of our lea- gue, 20-l7 at the half, Waverly bounded back to put on an even greater display of basketball skill. The score being tied 36-36 at the end of the fourth quarter, a five- minute overtime period was played. Waverly finally netted a crucial 3 points to their Zand emerged victors with a score of 39-38. This game set the example of the type ofteam work which Waverly displayed through- out the entire 1953-54 basketball season. This kind of spirit was what won the fifth consecutive Valley Cham- pionship and clinched the class A Section Champion- ship in the 1952-53 season. , Victor Prinzi, Royce Hugo 49
