To thee, our glorious Waverly. We'll strive to keep thy honor high, Build up thy fame into the sky, Thy Red and White, We'll make the sign Of inspiration, pure and fine. As willing servants of thy power, We'll strive to strengthen it each hour, And with our knowledge newly gained Uphold thy well earned, noble name. So hail, all hail our Waverly We'll ever more be true to thee, Our ALMA MATER and our Queen, In everything thou art Supreme. W. H. S. BUILDING ERECTED IN 1939 FOREWCDRD The theme of this year's Carantouan is our Centennial-- the people, their lives, and their progress througha century. In our yearbook we shall try to show some of the land- marks of Waverly's life from 1854, to this, our Centennial year. The yearbook is a tribute to these people, past and pre- sent, who have made Waverly what it is today. EQUMJWMMEJL THE TOWN CLOCK ERECTED IN l874 DEDICATION The Class of 1954 takes great ptide in being able to grad- uate ina year that marks a century of progress for the com- munity of Waverly. Towering above the village, the town clock serves as a symbol of time spent by the citizens of Waverly in building this community. With each passing hour, they have learned to benefit by past experience and have turned many a dream into reality. Like time, progress in our community has marched on from the organization of an admirable school system to the completion of a modern hospital. Therefore we feel it very fitting to dedicate this year's Carantouan to the citizens of the village of Waverly, who have been re spon- sible for the high standing of our community. X 2 :if T o ?'sb-'Y U , , OUR UPERI TE DE T IN l937 To The Class of 1954: The publication ofyour class annual in the year of our community's Centennial Celebration should have a special significance for you. lt is not only the time to become familiar with the history and achievements of your home town during the past one hundred years, it should be the occasion for much self evaluation. It is relatively easy to point out how much better the way of life is today, both in school and out, than it was a century ago. Butit isn't quite so easy to sense that this progress is the result of great vision, much hard work and many sacrifices on the part of succeeding generations during this time. We,who enjoy thisheritage, must be sure that we are worthy of it. We can best do this by availing ourselves of the vast educational, industrial, professional, and civic opportunities all around us. Thus we will be enabled to contribute to the continued progress of our community. You are about to graduate fromhigh school and you are thereby taking the first step in fitting yourselves for effective citizenship in the world of today. H. S. Class of '54. As you probably already know, we have gatheredi together here on Waverly Hill in the ultra-modern restaurant designed by Dawn Abbott for the successful manager, -Tess'eO'Brien. Although it is dark across the valley, Jim Marshall and Fred Van Nest, famed lighting directors for MGM, have com- bined talents to illuminate the valley for us tonight. Glancing over the dining oom, I see the officers of our class who are seated with friends. There is Don Bidker, Secretary of Agriculture: Jerifyi Eine, Secre- tary of the Treasury: and Rosemary Uirnbn, Vice-President of the U. S. and Sec- retary of State. 'X lv f ' t ff ' More people are a riving all the time. Here comes an attractive young man about town, Ted Hg, It d, surrounded by a cluster of attractive young ladies. The team was confronted with two obstacles even before playing their first game . The first was the loss of such outstanding players as Fred Lincoln, Stub Terwilliger, Bill Creedon, and Bill Rolls. The second, was an unavoidable delay which cost many boys an invalu- able week's practice. Just ten practices after the last football game, the boys, under the coaching of Ray Miller, played a game which will be remembered in this valley for years to come. Trailing Johnson City, a team classed out of our lea- gue, 20-l7 at the half, Waverly bounded back to put on an even greater display of basketball skill. The score being tied 36-36 at the end of the fourth quarter, a five- minute overtime period was played. Waverly finally netted a crucial 3 points to their Zand emerged victors with a score of 39-38. This game set the example of the type ofteam work which Waverly displayed through- out the entire 1953-54 basketball season. This kind of spirit was what won the fifth consecutive Valley Cham- pionship and clinched the class A Section Champion- ship in the 1952-53 season. , Victor Prinzi, Royce Hugo 49 l FIRST ROW: Kreh, Jackson, Leary, Hammond, Masteller, Sullivan, Hagerman. SECOND ROW: Griffin, O'Toole, C. O'Toole, Burlingame, Grinnell, Gibbs. .ILINIQR VARSITY BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity Basketball team followed the same schedule the Varsity played throughout the 1953-54 season and experienced many thrills due to trick shots and close scores. The local crowds were gratifying with their excellent support which led the way to high team morale and boosted the spirit of Waverly High School as a whole. l 1 HOME GAMES f A, 3 yfvyi December 5 Johnson City yjfflffsfq 1, y X I XA December 8 Towanda ' ,' f ' fm y December ll Elmira Heights 4 January 8 Horseheads I J. The Lettermen's Club is comprised of those persons who have earned their W in one or more of the major sports of the school. The membership reached a total of 36 when new members were initiated during an assembly in early November. Officers of the club this year are: Victor Prinzi, President: Royce Hugo, Vice President: Jack Terwilliger, Sec- retary: Tom Ross, Treasurer, and Coach Miller, Adviser. The main function of the club this year was to raise money for the purchasing of sweaters for the senior members. The Lettermen's Club also attempted to improve the student cheering section at basketball and football games by centering it in one particular part of the stands, The cheerleaders, advised by Miss Reynolds, are a group of seven girls selected by the faculty and a limited num- ber of students. The student body, under the leadership of these girls, maintains the spirit and morale of WHS and cheers the athletic teams on to victory. The cheerleaders, however, do not confine their activities to the athletic field alone. During the year they spon- sored refreshment sales in the corridors. The proceeds of these sales were used in the purchase of cheering jackets and flowers which were given the visiting cheerleaders. This year the Board of Education gave the cheerleaders new uniforms of red corduroy dresses trimmed in white.
