GRADUATING CLASS OF 1955 Salutatorian Class History End of A Perfect Day Class Will Class Prophecy Valedictorian CLASS PROPHECY The year is 1965. As I stand here in the office of WRHS looking at the files of former students I happen upon the files of the class of 1955. Let us look at what these people are doing now. Janice Baxter who always enjoyed shorthand in high school is taking dicta- tion from the President of the United States at 199 words a minute. Phyllis Baxter, now Mrs. Kenny Glenn, is living south of Waverly busily raising cows, chickens, pigs, and children. Marge Buehler comes next. Well we had a hard time contacting her because she was out on a cruise in her old tub, The USS Superhomogalatedamphlifier. She is bus keeping all the bolts in the boiler room tightened so the tide won't over take lier. Patty Clavert and her husband own the Waverly Telephone Company. The exchange now covers Sharpe, Halls Summit, Silkville, and Aglricola. Frank Efinger has discovered a new kind of bomb called t e Q. T. bomb, Frank has taken over Einsteins place since the great scientist passed on. Fred Efinger, his twin brother is doing quite well for himself too. He is teaching English at WHS, He got his out-side reading so well that he decided that the En ish profession couldn't do without him. Gerald ifischer now head coach at Notre-Dame is also working on the three minute mile on his spare time. Some say this is impossible but Gerald mastered Physics so he feels he could do anything. Harold Fischer really went up in the world. Harold is now President of the First National Bank of Waverly. He has perfected the latest atomic eye to catch robbers. George French is now living in Melvern, Kansas and is married to the for- mer Janet Korbe, George and anet have a very successful business of running a dance hall called Five Corners . Beverly Gordon is head bookkeeper at the Chewy Chomper chewing gum factory. The figlures get rather gummed up at times but she always manages to get them straig tened out. Professor Robert Grounds a well established Historian is teaching American History at Waverly High School. Jack Hamilton is returning to the United States from a lion hunt in Africa. Jack is well known for his abi ity to hunt. But What? ? Gerry Howe owns a fleet of rockets that go to the moon twice a month. ' This is a thriving little business for Gerry and he made quite a haul out of it. Jimmy Hughes has climbed Mount Everest for the very first time back- wards. Jim was always a backward boy in school. , Vivian Long is the only old maid in the class of 1955. She is teaching Kinder arten at Agricola. The reason poor Viv never married is because she never gaund a man who would pick up his socks. Nellie Markham is still looking or a man or rather an unsuspecting sucker. Good luck Nell I hope you catch one soon or you may get too old. Mary Massey just filibustered in Congress for t ree days fifteen hours thirty minutes and two seconds against the Filibustering Bill. She now holds the Worlds record. That wasn't hard to understand because Mary always enjoyed talking to an extent in school. Betty McKinstry just won the championship race at the Indianapolis speed- ways. Betty was one of the be st and the fastest drivers when she was in school. Karen Northcott is now the box office favorite on the Grande Old Opery in Nashville Tenn. She is co-starring with Ernest Tubb. She's the tub and he's Ernest. Shirley Rickman took over the Sundry store in Waverly and now owns a chain across the country. Just look for Shirley's Sundry Shop for the best re- freshments the world over. Frankie Schmid is a famous New York Model. She is featured on the cover of Country Gentlemen wearing her Bermuda shorts. LeRoy Steward owns all t e cattle in Coffey County and his Ranch is widely known. As I was driving to Waverly I passed LeRoy in his new 1965 Caddie, 62 cylinder, with a hinge in the middle, car. Lee is so rich that he has installed in the rear of his car a shower, T. V. set, and all the conveniences of home. Bessie Lee Vesey finally found the one and only man for her an African Pygmy. They met while Bessie and Jack were on a game safari in deepest Africa It was love at first sight. Georgia Lea Ward, better known as Gorgeous Geor ia the famous Lady wrestler is now appearing in Madison Square Gardens. georgia always was a muscle gal when she was in school. The last name on my list here is Rev. Jim Williams. He is preaching in the Presbyterian Church in Waverly. After his experience at Preaching in t e Variety Show his Senior year Jim decided to make this his profession. It looks like all the Seniors of 1955 did rather well for themselves doesn't it? CLASS HISTORY In September 1951 twenty-seven ambitious but frightened Freshmen entered the halls of W,R, H, S, During our first year we gained Major Buehler and Paul Cornwe l. Later in the year Leonard Fisher and Jack Gillow left us. At our first class meeting on September 14 the following officers were elected: President-Janice Baxter, Vice-President- Karen Northcott, Secretary-Treasurer-Shirley Rickman, and Reporter-Mary Mas sey. Student Council mem ers were George French and Ne 1 Markham. On Initiation Day, in burlap sacks, dunce caps and carrying milk buckets, we were under the control of the Seniors. School started in the next September with the same eager students with Mr. Ben Tice as our sponsor. The following were class officersg President-Gerald Fischer, Vice-Presi- dent-Karen Northcott, Secretary-Treasurer-Janice Baxter, Reporter-Vivian Long and Student Council-George French and Nell Markham. We selected purple and white as our class colors and white carnations as our flower. Our motto was Truth Gives Wing to Success . The Sophomoregirls were awarded the honor of serving the Junior-Senior anquet. As Juniors, with Mrs. Doris Harder and Mr. Paul Bowersox as sponsors, we were now enjoying an upper cla'ssman rating. Our officers for this year were: Presi- dent-Jim Williams, Vice-President-Gerald Fischer, Sec- retary-Janice Baxter, Treasurer-Karen Northcott, Report- er-Shirley Rickman, Student Council-Vivian Long and George French. On December 4th we presented 'Our Miss Brooks , our Junior Play. It was a big success! The first big highlight of the year was the day we received our class rings. We dug deep in our pockets to pay for them but they were worth it. The second and biggest highlight was the Junior-Senior Banquet on April 22. We picked as our theme Hawaiian Cruise . To relieve our minds of our heav school work we had a scavanger hunt and hamburger tyry. After being stuffed to the brim we went on a hayrack ride. As our final year rolled around we started out with the same number of students. Later on we lost Lester Arb and gained Betty McKinstry. With Mr. and Mrs. Ted Harder as sponsors we elected as officers: President-Jim Williams, Vice-President-Gerald Fischer, Secretary-Shirley Rickman, Treasurer-Karen Northcott, Student Council-Janice Baxter and George French. Again on October 12 we dug into our pockets to pay for our enior pictures. To increase our ankroll we had two paper drives to pick up magazines we had sold our Junior Year. Another chance at acting came on December 3rd when we presented our Senior play Finders Creepers . The yearbook staff was appointed and began work on the second Bulldog annual. On April 26, dressed fit to kill, we were guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet. Bright and early the next morning we loaded ourselves into the bus and were off to Rockaway Beach. On Thursday, May 19th our high school days were brought to a close by the Commencement Exercises. Thus leaving twenty-five graduates each going' their own way. ., ,, .U 1 fe fitffizkff ffl' ,Q -wi: -ge? , ,.,.... , .,,.., .,,. , ,,.,, N., ...,,,. A ,,..,,,,,,,. ' f J f if 213 I'- SENIORS TAKE TRIP T0 OZARKS At 5:45 o 'clock Friday morning, April 29, twenty- five sleegly but eagxir seniors alongllwi Mr. and rs. Borg- na, r. and Mrs. Harder and Joe Rogers left dear old Waver- ly for a week end trip in the zarks. Our main pastime was keeping each other awake un- til we got to Harrisonville, Mo. , where we ate breakfast. After a stop of thirty or fort five minutes, we headed south over Missouri winding, hilly roads. At Bolivar we stopped for about ten minutes to rest our cra mdped legs. Then in Springfiel we stopped for gas. All along the way tpleople craned their necks at e us to read what was written on the side, Finally, many hills la ter we dpcgpped around a curve and lan e right smack dab in the middle of Rockaway Beach. We found our resort and af- ter hauling our numerous suit- cases into the cottages we set out to find something to eat. After satisfying ourhunger pangs we scattere to look e town over. Several of the kids made it for the boats while others went back to their cottages to rest their weary bones. The cottages were built of natural Ozark mountain rock and the inside ofmost ofthem was decorated in cedar. All the appliances and the furni- ture were modern and they afforded very comfortable liv- ing while we were there. The girls were in two cottages, the boys in two, and the sponsors in one. After seeing the prices of food in the cafes, the grocery stores were raided and the smells of many rare delica- cies issued forth from the open doors of the cottages. After the sun went down several weird noises could be heard. Some came from the ducks on the lake, some from the boats, and others from the mouths of those peo le who were having pranks pllayed on .thern. Things finally quieted down until six o'clock Saturday morning when we were awak- ened by' the sound of motor- boats. hat day was filled with boating, h o r s e b a c k riding, swimming, and sunbathing, and ended when most of the kids went downstream ten miles to Branson on the Show Boat where some went to the show and others went shopping. The boat returned at te n o'c1ock and everyone was back in Rock- awayxby eleven. Saturday nig t wasn't much different from Friday night except that it was a little later when every- one gilt to sleep. Sundaryl morning found some of e early birds out on the lake by sixo'clock. The rest ofthe morning was spent packing and cleaning up the cotta ges. Most everybody found that his suitcases were a little fuller than when he had last packed them. Finally at nine thirty all twenty five were piled into the bus for the long trip home. We headed for Cassville and Roar- ing River and after many hills and curves arrived at the fish hatcherty at Roaring River. Many o the boys probably wished for a fishing pole when theiy looked down into the water an saw that it was black with trout. Once more into the bus and once more out on the road. Fin ally about one thirty we arrived in Noel where we ate dinner. Since we were so close to the Arkansas state line we drove over to Sulpher Springs, Arkansas, where we too a drink from each of the three M S 'li M :fe-fn ,r K . . Q - - all - mineral springs. Back to Noel again and we were off to Grove, Oklahoma. After driving over several rough roads we sighted Grand Lake. On north to the Buffalo Ranch near Afton, Oklahoma, where several of the kids saw their first live buffaloes. Off we were once again and it wasn't too long until we were back in good old flat Kansas. Finallly at five minutes after eight Sun ay evening we arrived in Waverly--twenty-five be- draglgled, dirty, ti re d people eac with a sunburn, bruise, or ache all his own. By--Vivian Long V ' J .
