Text from Pages 1 - 55 of the 1962 volume:

EDICATION There are no two people more important in our lives than our Mother and Dad. Our lives are placed in their hands when we are born and there we re- main all during the formative years of our lives. Their best years are devoted to providing for our material and spiritual needs and to seeing that we grow up to be worthwhile citizens. Regretful as it may be, we do not often stop to think of the many things which they sacrifice so we can have more. For all of this, Mom and Dad, we are extremely grateful. To try to show you in some small way just how grateful we are, we dedicate this 1962 Hornet to you, our two most important friends. 2 Principal’s Message May I extend my sincere appreciation and congratulations to the 1962 sen- ior class. Your future success will depend on the knowledge which you ac- quired in the twelve years of schooling. Remember that the future holds something for the pqrson who keeps his faith in it. Good luck to all of you. Even though we are only lowly freshmen. The freshman year brings with it the opportunity to participate in Senior High sports, music, class organization, and other groups such as Future Teachers of America. Also, as freshmen, we are faced with the choice of many elective subjects; and, for the first time, our class members take separate paths as they follow the various academic programs. Pres.--Don Evans Sec.--Nancy Stult2 Treas.--Theresa Stock we 11 Reporter - -Ronny Keedy Our sophomore year promises to be a busy one. For the first time, we think seriously of money, realizing that the next two years are going to be expensive ones. By now, most of us have ideas as to what our future occupations will be; and we choose our subjects accordingly. Some of the class members are beginning to compare the advan- tages of various colleges and universities and to work even harder in hopes of possible scholarships. It is hard for us to believe that at the end of this year we will be half way through high school. FRONT ROW--Ruby Thomas, Ted Whitecotton, Patty Miles, Jennifer Grimes, Don Brewer, Elsie Smith. Class History The Start of a Long Journey Begins with the First Step” On a bright, sunny, September day in 1950, the Waveland Big Top took its first step on a long journey. There were twenty of us performers under the direction of Virginia Moore, our ring- leader. It was through her many times of shaking us that we became better performers. In the second year of the Big Top we gained nine new performers from the town of Byron: Gary Morgan, Dennis Curry, Gary Swank, Barbara McCampbell, Mary Harvey, Wanita Tague, Larry Long, Lyle Sosbe, and Ronald Banta. We also lost two performers, David Hayes and Thomas Ellis. Our ringleader for this year was Rose Glas- cock, who taught us how to be even better per- formers on our long journey. It was in the third year of performing that the ringleader position was given to Hazel Machledt. During this year we were sorry to lose Larry Long, Lyle Sosbe, Dale Calvert, and Larry Moody. The Multiplication Act was hard for all of us this year and required many extra hours of practice. In the fall of the fourth year we got out our equipment and new costumes and arrived at the tent with enthusiasm, since Norma Mitchell was to be our ringleader. Carol Apple joined us and Gary Swank and Ronnie Wendall left our group. 34 One of our performers, Marilyn French, left us for a day to participate in a Spelling Contest at Waynetown. In the fifth year of the Waveland Big Top, David Hayes was hired to fill the vacancy left by Carol Apple and Gary Morgan who gave up circus life for another job. On this the fifth step of our journey, Doris Grimes was our ringleader. Mary Overpeck, our ringleader for the sixth year, greeted Robert Cronin and said farewell to David Hayes, Paul Cooper, and Judy Huxhold. During this year we held a top position in the Operetta Act and supervision of beginning per- formers, which we had never held before. We changed agencies in our seventh year. Upon entering the Junior High Agency, Mary Good became our ringleader. Although Robert Cronin left us and sought life in another circus, we made up for this loss by adding to our trapeze act David Jolly, David Rafferty, Danny Howell, and Bruce Clevenger. Because of the new agency with its new quarters, rules, and assistants, we became confused for awhile. Robert Gooding set the circus off to a big start the eighth year with no loss of performers, but we gained Larry Grimes and Beverly Wall. In our ninth year we started our last four years of performing. We were under the direction of Walker and Pike during this year. We were given an Initiation Party by a Senior Agency, which we will never forget. In spite of everything else we lost many of our performers to the Turkey Run Big Top. We were happy to have Deanna Nixon, Ronnie Hall, and Alan Franklin join us. Thompson and Pike took over the circus in the tenth year and advised us to sell concessions. We took a short trip to Crawfordsville that year and added Donna Meadows to our circus. Beverly Hester and Dennis Curry left us to join another Big Top. Several of the performers bought rings alike that year. 35 Kathy Pittman joined our Big Top during the eleventh year which was under the direction of Pike and Thompson. The Russellville Bee Circus took two of our performers--Danny Howell and Larry Grimes at that time. We took time out that year to present a play, The Smart Boy. In the last step of our journey we didn't gain or lose any performers, which made it a perfect year. Also as added attractions this year, Gwenith Bowers received the D.A.R. award, and Linda Coleman was given a trip to Girls' State. Seven performers were given sweaters for their band performance, too. In this year we presented another play, The Custers' Last Stand. Mr. Collins, our ringleader, would now like to present the performers of the Waveland Big Top. The performers are: Dick Watson, Strong Man; Earl Staggs, David Rafferty, and Donna Meadows, Trapeze Flyers; Kathy Pittman, The Gabber; Deanna Nixon, The Fat Lady; Tom McCarty, Magician; Marilyn French, Trained Rat Act; Alan Franklin, Unicyclist; Ray France, Knife Thrower; Linda Coleman, Bareback Rider; Maurice Brewer and Glenn Miller, Tightwire Walkers; and Gwenity Bowers, Twirler. We received diplomas for being the best performers of 1962 and we closed the Waveland Big Top by taking a trip to Washington, D. C. We hope that the memories of the long journey with Waveland Big Top will be cherished by all. 36 BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF 1962 FROM CRAWFORDSVILLE BUSINESS FIRMS MEADOW GOLD DAIRY Crawfordsville, Indiana PERRY LEWIS COMPANY Ford Authorized Sales Service UNION SAVINGS LOAN ASSN.
