Keith, Roger, and Marvin rebuild stage backing Page Sixteen Our Director Suzy Darling Me and Mv Teddy Bear Margie Mv Bonnie Lassie Little Girl In the fall of 1947, 27 frightened, but excited, youngsters began their SCHOOL DAYS. Sam Canine went to the girls’ restroom by mistake the first day. (That’s how scared he was!) One of the most frightening experiences of the year occurred while Miss Moore was out of the room. We began throwing modeling clay and Kent Evans got it in his hair. Miss Moore had to wash it out. We spent several recesses inside for that. Even though they were JUST YOUNG, Charles Atkison and Marjee Priebe had a big romance. In the second grade we returned to the LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE. We lost Mary Lowery, Carolyn Hunsicker, James Collins. Richard Cooper, and Samuel Canine. This year the first and second grades, Miss Moore, and Mrs. Glascock made a tour of Crawfordsville. We were the only classes who ever made this tour. We always looked forward to Halloween and a party at Tommy Milligan’s. As the AUTUMN LEAVES fell, we entered Mrs. Mach led t’s room minus Shirley Smiley and Charlene Williams, but we had gained Nancy Lou Ellis. James Tavlor, and Lana Murray. Lana, however, proved to be a bad influence because she and Tom Milligan had to spend recess inside for playing cards! A most embarrassing moment for Sandy Bavless was when Mrs. Machledt read her LOVE LETTERS to the whole class. When we started the fourth grade, we missed Roger Johnson, Nancy Lou Ellis and James Taylor. John Fulhvider was with us the second semester. Upon entering the fourth grade. Mrs. Ratcliff introduced us to “ain’t and the paint bucket.” We improved our English greatly. Both the girls and boys had physical education. Miss Porter taught the girls and Mr. Davis taught the boys. Page Twenty When we entered the fifth grade, we gained the Byron kids,” Sharlie Felkner, Judy Harvey, and Rdy Hutson. We also gained Bonnie Curry and Tom Caldwell, but lost Keith Hess and John Fulhvider. We all remember the day Bonnie Curry cried when she was telling a story. Several brought AN APPLE FOR THE TEACHER, Mrs. Crimes. Mary Margaret Jeffries was very embarrassed when she wore her apron to school one morning! Carolyn Graham, Marjee Priebe, and Lana Murray carried on a running feud this year. Starting our sixth year of school, we lost Joanne Miller and Joan Weaver. Bob Wills joined us. This year we studied under the guidance of Mrs. Overpeck, who was teaching for the first year at Waveland. It was also the first vear of the Safety Patrol. The boys had their physical education class again this vear. The big news was the SECRET LOVE of Sharlie Felkner and Steve Sewell. It was one morning this year that Charles Atkison wore his pajama shirt to school. Our first year “upstairs” we missed Tom Caldwell but we gained Maurice Dav. TILL THE END OF TIME well remember our first class party which was a supper and a 3-D movie afterward. Mr. Brown was our sponsor. Mr. Haffhaus held some rousing ciphering matches this year in arithmetic. Mr. Brown was our sponsor again in the eighth grade. One of our class parties was a weincr roast at Turkey Run. Several of the girls went to the fresh- man and sophomore class parties this year—this was quite a thrill. Page Twenty-one As fres'nmen, we missed Jerry Johnson and Maurice Day. The biggest event of the year was our initiation. Now we were really in high school. We were constantly being repremanded for WHISPERING and DREAMING in the study halls. Mr. McCauley and Mr. Walker were our sponsors. Our sophomore year we lost Brenda Linton and gained James Fry and Jerry Johnson. We had our first experience with the concessions this year. Our sponsors were Mrs. Beeson and Mr. Dingle. As we chose our buff and brown class sweaters, we began to realize HIE END was drawing nearer. This year we presented a radio program on WBBS and had a pizza party afterward at Lana Murray’s. Our junior year we were sorry to lose Charles Atkison and James Fry but we welcomed Charles Spencer. We prepared for the prom under the guidance of our sponsors, Mr. Hall and Mr. Williams. If the orchestra hadn’t gone home at 12:00, we COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT. Mr. Williams coached our play, “Deadly Ernest.” Now we were real actors, JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIES. Page Twenty-two Everyone, including the Freshmen, enjoyed the initiation day, and we enjoyed having so much authority lor a day. One of the most important events of our senior year was our magazine sales. Since we went over our goal, the salesman, Mr. Johnson, washed our dishes at the turkey supper. We prepared a float for the Christmas Parade at Crawfordsville with the theme “From the Manger to the Cross. Three-cornered Hat I m Sitting on Top of the World I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles (Bookkeeping?) Belief is just a Swallow away (Speech?) Tliis is a typical senior day with lots of hard work and a lot of laughs! Happy Birthdav Eleven of the original twenty-seven are left and we have many MEMO- RIES. As GRADUATION DAY draws near, we, the Class of 1959, are ready to take our place in the world, convinced. They can con- quer who believe they can.” We join hands before the HALLS OF IVY and bid farewell to our SCHOOL DAYS at Waveland. Tin Juniors of ’59 are at last on their way to the moon in a super-duper, super-sonic rocket ship, built and designed by the nation’s leading rocket expert. Professor Winston Thompson. It is said that he de- signer! this ship while teaching math and physics at Wavcland High School. As the rocket soared upward from the nationally famous Waveland Testing Grounds, the stewardess approached us with a pillow and some magazines. Much to our surprise, we discovered that sue was Marianne Hester, a former student at Waveland High. Marianne informed us that the pilot was also a former Waveland student, Ace Charles Spencer. He qualified for this job bv his “rocketing” around Waveland. Looking across the aisle, we noticed the world- renowned orchestra conductor, Stephen Sewell. Steve told us that he and his solo trumpeter, “Hot Lips” Clifton, were on the way to join the rest of the orchestra. They invited us to attend their opening concert to be given on the moon. We thanked them and leaned back to enjoy our magazines. While looking through them, we noticed on the front of “Esquire,” a picture of a model vaguely familiar to us. Looking inside, we read that the model was Carolyn Graliam. who had just been voted “Miss Moonl eam of Outerspaee.” We also noticed that the new editor and publisher of the magazine was Mr. Ralph Williams, a former English teacher at Waveland. The stewardess informed us that we were about to land and told us to fasten our safety belts. The rocket slowly descended, and soon we stepped out to take our first look at the moon. Across tnc field we noticed a touring moon bus. and decided to board it to get our first glimpse of activity on the moon. Stepping into the bus, we recognized the driver as Robert Gooding. He told us that driving a moon bus was very mild compared to the driver training classes at Waveland. He then told us he would take us on a special tour of interesting places. Our first stop was at a multi-million dollar factor)’, owned bv Evans Milligan. Inc. They specialize in making live-pound cigars for heavy smokers. Kent and Tom conducted us around the plant, and at one table we saw Jerry Johnson, the champion to- bacco twister and filter inserter. After bidding them good-bve, we re-entered our moon bus and were carefully driven by Mr. Gooding to “Alice’s Palace.” Here we enjoyed a delicious meal of green cheeseburgers, a moon delicacy, pre- pared for us by tin owner, Mrs. Ring, a former home economics teacher at Waveland High. Our food was served bv a petite little waitress whom we recog- nized immediately as Sandy Bayless. She certainly has come up in the world since she graduated from Waveland. As we enjoyed our meal, we were entertained by the sensational singing sextette, “The Solar Six. We were surprised to see that the group consisted of “Jinny” Foster, “Rosie” Glascock, “Mitch Mitchell, “Jeannie” Patton. “Dorrie Grimes and “Mary” Over- peck, former faculty members of Waveland. They had fled to the moon to escape playground duty. We hated to leave “Alice’s Palace” because we met many acquaintances there, including the cashier, Bonnie Currv, who gained her experience in the business world by juggling figures and decimals in a prominent store near Waveland. When we left the restaurant, we noticed a poster announcing an All-Star basketball game, featuring Coach Walker and his Fabulous Five.” We knew that Mr. Walker’s fame as a basketball coach was world-wide, but we didn’t dream that he was also famous on the moon. We hopped into the bus and directed our driver to take us to the sports arena. As we prepared to enter, we recognized another Waveland resident, Mrs. Helen Mine, in the ticket booth. Mrs. Mine was al- ways a faithful and capable ticket seller at Wavcland hallgames. The loud speaker blared forth the starting line-up as we made our way to our seats. We were happy to hear the voice of Victor Pence, a former principal at Waveland High. His assembly announce- ments did pav off after all. Immediately following the starting line-up, a special welcome was given by Gerald Robison, president of the moon. As the team roared onto the floor in their space- stvled long-johns,” we recognized three of them as former faculty members at Waveland — “Hustlin’” Hall, “Ramblin’” Reed, and following behind, “Pokey Pike. Looking toward the scorer’s bench, we were greatly surprised to see Florence Servies as the storekeeper. Teaching bookkeeping at Waveland really helped ncr in this work. We were just settling back to watch the game, when we heard a voice yell, Get your pizza right here!” We instantly knew that the voice belonged to John Reynolds, another graduate of Waveland. He always was fond of pizza. Half-time entertainment was furnished by Mrs. Owen and her Marching Martians. The star attrac- tion was a twirling exhibition performed by Lana Murray. She is the only person who can twirl four batons at the same time wnile walking a tight rope. When the game ended, we went to the “Double W” Hotel. We later learned that the proprietors were Mr. Bruce Williams and Mr. Homer Walters, former custodians at Waveland High School. Entering the lobby, we recognized another familiar face. Suanne Gronkhite. She is now the switchlward operator of the Inter-Planetary' Communication Bureau. As we rested in the lobby, we heard the latest recording, “You Ain’t Nothin’ but a Spaceman,” by the top rock n’ roll” stars on tlu moon. We recog- nized their voices as those of Marjee Priebe and Mary Margaret Jeffries. After spending the night at the “Double W” Hotel, we returned to the rocket base, just in time to catch tlu next rocket to the earth. We lx arded the rocket and bade farewell to all our Waveland friends that we had seen. We settled back just as we heard the last part of the count-down. Five-four-three—two-one! Blast off!
