Class History On a cool clear day in the year 1942, the race for our education began. Mr. Clifford Hallett was our pace setter and Miss Moore was our flag starter. The racers were: Richard Armstrong, Stanley Sehhman, Alan Francis, Joyce Johnson, Don Baldwin, Gerry Lucas, Linda Howell, Mary Ellen Miller, Shirley Richardson, Claudie Price, John Walker, Jackie Bayless, Sidney Shanks, Richard Marshall, Sarah Thornburgh, Tcrrv Evans, Dale Moody, Patricia Hester, Irene Handley, Diethelm Hessel, William Jeffries, Dwayne Sewell, Mary Grenat, Jon Foster, Charles McMurrav. Donald Chappell, Charlene Pittman, Wanda Rose Hess, Edward Grenat, Melvin Kelly, and Max Gentry. After turning the corner going in to the second lap, Mrs. Glascock took over the Hags. Otto and Ottis Reynolds joined us that season, along with Jerry Johnson. We lost a lot of our team: Richard Armstrong, Stanley Sehhman, Alan Francis. Gerrv Lucas, Shirley Richardson, Claudie Price, Richard Marshall. Sarah Thornburgh. Diethelm Hessel, Dwayne Sewell, Marv Grenat, Donald Chappell, Charlene Pittman. Edward Grenat, and Melvin Kelly. Tlien, into the third lap we turned with Mrs. Patton picking up the flags, and once in awhile her shoe. Our race had too many entrants so Mrs. Glascock had to start a new race that year. Linda Howell left us that year. On our fourth lap Mrs. Grimes was the Hag caretaker. We gained back our old track team with some new racers added: Shirley Briggs, Marv Sailer. Clara Wilson, and Bill Wendall. The fifth year Mrs. Hallett picked up the flags, and the race was run smoothly that year. Vera Reynolds joined and left the same year. Linda Howell joined the race again in the latter part of the year. Our flagman in our sixth year was Mr. Miller. The track got pretty rough that year but we made it. We gained Donald Hunt, Richard Tolliver, and James Jones that year. The next year we took on a new pace setter. Mr. Gale Grimes. In our seventh lap we picket! up Lodell Barker. Mary Martha Simms, and Marianna Chappell. We slowed down on “Eighth Grade Curve to pick up Paquita Douglas and Jack Day whom we last the same year. Mary Martha Simms. Lodell Barker. Don Baldwin. Joyce Johnson, and Jim Jones also left our race. We were given the red Hag on the ninth lap so we could be given a welcome party by the “Seniors . We were then joined in our race bv Elinor Apple, Delores Hutson. Lois Pitcock. Warren Brewer, and Bilb Fuilenwider. Jack Walls and Junior Staggs also joined us. but left the same vear. Sm

We then went to the “Sophomore Corner” where we picked up Darrell Meihls. We lost Donald Hunt and Dale Moody in the last lap of this race. We acquired our third and last pace setter who was Mr. Victor Pence. in our Junior home stretch we gave a successful play “The Campbell’s Are Coming” to make money to buy gas and tires to continue our race. We also sold refreshments to the other racers on our pit stops. We then gave a reception at the Municipal Club House with “Harbor Lights” as our theme. Jerry Lou Joiner started her racing career with us at the beginning of September, and Otto Reynolds retired from racing ending his career. We made pit stops and then continued our race on to the “Senior Victorv Lane”. We gave our plav “The Ghost Parade”, and published a race form of our great escapade. We attended a beautiful reception given in our honor bv the small midget racers following us. We are now entering the home stretch of our last lap and are planning our own races in life, but we shall never see a greater flag than the one with WHS waving at us as long as memories last. As a final celebration to our having won the twelve year race of WHS, we are planning a trip to Washington. D.C. and New York shortly after the closing of school. The class has worked hard the past two years to obtain funds for this celebration. Now in 1954 as we are coming closer to the checkered Hag, we know that no particular person is the victor, but we also know that we are all victorious in the race for our education. Vow Seven
