Kicking off the week ' s events, the students had fun by dressing up, acting crazy, and just getting involved in spirit week. The float competition this year was very competitive. With an honest effort, the Seniors placed 4th, the Freshmen ended up with a 3rd place, and the Sophomores captured 2nd. It was a hard deci- sion for the judges to make, but the Juniors managed to steal their first 1st place with their theme Give Us Liberty, Give Them Death. The annual snake dance through town was held Thursday evening and was followed by the bonfire and Good Luck, Let ' s Win speeches. Friday evening brought the event that the whole week ' s activities had been leading up to — the football game against Liberty Center. The pre-game events included a showing of the floats and the queen and her court. As the band played the coronation march the 1982 Homecoming Queen, Miss Tracy Cole, and her court were escorted by their fathers out onto Harmon Field. As last year ' s queen, Dawn Stutzman, crowned Tracy, Tracy ' s court, Senior attendant Michelle Friedhoff, Junior attendant Bren- da Alig, Sophomore attendant Diana Bogosian, and Freshman at- tendant Jill Neuenswander, pro- udly watched. The football team defeated Liberty 34-22, giving us our 7th victory of the season. The Homecoming dance took place on Saturday evening. In their long gowns, the queen and her court danced with their escorts to the only slow song that the band ' Ruby Jones ' managed to play that evening. Even though there weren ' t many opportunities for slow dances with your date, the dance was a memorable ending to just a fantastic week. The Senior class of ' 83 brought the phrase, Juniors — Dead Meat! to life on Oct. 10, 1982. The Junior gridders caught on to the toughness of the game, and the result was a hard-hitting, com- petitive hour of football. The Senior strategy of scoring early proved that they had more experience as they posted an 8 — victory. Senior Kelly Stites scored the only touchdown, with quarterback Jill Moden taking the ball on a bootleg for the two-point conver- sion. The game provided funds for a new sound system for the WHS gym. The game ended with Junior and Senior girls knowing they had a few sore muscles and lots of laughs to deal with on Monday morning. This year, WHS Thespian Troupe 827 decided to broaden their horizons and go a different route for the fall play. In September, Mr. Perry, director, announced that the rumors were true. The Thespians would be producing A MAN CALLED PETER in-the-round in the cafeteria. On November 16, 18, and 20, the theatre-in-the-round became a reality. The story of A MAN CALLED PETER is quite a simple one. It is of the Reverend Peter Mar- shall, his wife Catherine, and son Peter John, and the youth group from the New York Avenue Church where Peter was minister in Washington, D.C. While pastor of the church, Peter faced many problems in his family and church life. There are the dilemmas of the youth group members, like Susan Grant who is engaged but is afraid of marriage after seeing her parents ' for so many years. And there is Allan Talbot who is constantly hampered by his Aunt Judith Bickle. It is the same Judith Bickle who con- stantly criticizes Peter and builds unbearable pressures on him. And it is Judith Bickle who has restricted her sister Jesse in her spoken thoughts for many years. There is Senator James Knox Polk who fights Peter in Dr. Marshall ' s attempt to reform a young thief from the youth group. It is Sen. Polk who is arguing with Peter the night Dr. Marshall suffers his heart at- tack and it is Sen. Polk who ultimately nominates Peter as Chaplain of the United States Senate. There were nine students mak- ing their stage debut in the two regular and one dinner theatre performances. They and the ten veterans, the stage crew, Mr. Perry, Mrs. Schnitkey, and all the crews involved did a wonder- ful job. They all deserve a round of applause! CAST OF A MAN CALLED PETER Rev. It included a fine variety of enter- tainment such as the unknown pillow people, the best legs in the high school , won by Robbin Vasvery and Dave Rohrs, Wau- seon ' s own Professor Richie Sim- mons — alias Flaky Baker — with his famous butterscotch cake in- cluding a little butter and a little scotch. The intense sound of rock was provided by the groups Ram- page and No One, while more mellow chords were sung by Mar- sie Menchaca and Danny Rashley. As the afternoon came to a close with Mr. Perry performing The Creation, the audience was told to stay tuned to next year for another episode of ' The WHS Talent Show. SWEETHEART DANCE Tom Glanz King for the Day. 24 Soft music, dim lights, and a color- ful gymnasium set the scene for this year ' s Sweetheart Dance. Reigning over the events of the evening were King Tom Glanz and his escort Michelle Friedhoff. Senior Troy Fraker was chosen as Duke with Dara Stutzman as his escort. The Knight was Junior Tabb Gype, escorted by Jill Moden. Lynette Boyers escorted Troy Darcy, who was chosen from the sophomore class as Squire. Freshman Desi Stutzman, who was selected as Page, was escorted by Krista Roos. As this year ' s Valentine ' s Dance drew to a close, people who were brought together for an evening of dancing and romance, slowly went their separate ways. All of these add up to create one of the best theatrical productions Mr. Perry and Thespian Troupe 827 have ever attempted — THE KING AND I. From tryouts in January until performance time April 14- 17, well over 100 students from WHS and Elm Street worked diligently, learning lines, dances, music, and creating scenery and costumes. When the guest star — WHS alumnus, Emery L. Kedocia — arrived, everyone from cast to orchestra was ready to give their all! THE KING AND I is based on a true story about Mrs. Anna Leonowens and her son Louis. Mrs. Anna is an English schoolteacher who has been hired to teach the Siamese Royal children. She meets not only the King and Crown Prince Chululongkorn, but also head wife Lady Tiang, the Kralahome ( a prime minister of sorts ), Tuptim (a present from the Burma Prince), and Tuptim ' s lover, Lun Tha. Mrs. Anna slowly brings about changes in the King and in- troduces him to new concepts, such as the polka. It was evident that a lot of hard work, both on the part of Mr. Perry, Miss Czajka, and Mr. George, and on the part of the cast, crews, and orchestra, went into this show. It was an experience no one is likely to soon forget. MAY 7, 1983 . . . HOLIDAY IN HOLLAND I don ' t know what to say. — L. Boyers 28 PREPARATION: The Juniors this year used a frantic, last minute Friday to prepare for the prom, while the Seniors enjoyed their day off. Lots of hard work by the Juniors and the Junior-Senior parents provided a beautiful Holiday in Holland, and a night full of games, boothes, a spookhouse, and prizes. All the months of planning and weeks of labor paid off with yet another very special evening. PROM: It was a big night for more than 300 Juniors and Seniors who attended the Saturday evening delight. It was a highlight of our school career, that chance to don tuxedos and formal dresses and escort that someone special. Good times till dawn began with the banquet in the high school gym. The students were escorted to their Dutch dinners while they en- joyed the scenic view of tulips, baby ducks, and an awesome sunset. Prom Queen Lynette Boyers and her date reigned over the dance and entertainment for the evening. ALL-NIGHT: The all-night party was truly a success. With plenty of games and prizes in the fun house, including the Kissing Booth, mystery booth (beware of pin-the- tail-on-the-elephant!), and bingo, you couldn ' t help but have a good time. The spookhouse was as gorry and wet as ever, sending chills down your spine. The movie The High Road to China was really a wet trip as it rained throughout the rest of the morning. Only the die-hards made it to the friendship circle at Burr Road to enjoy good food, good company, and the end to a great Prom. The Honors Day assembly recognized many efforts and talents including scholarship, perfect attendance, and athletics. Nineteen seniors were recognized and given Senior Awards in areas such as math, science, audio visuals, art, agriculture, service, and many other areas. Outstanding athletes Julie Matheaus and Tom Glanz were given the Sterling Awards. Many in- dividual scholarships were given and recognized. Top: Triple W recipients. One hundred and twelve graduating seniors bid farewell to WHS at the ceremony. After processing in to the tones of Pomp and Cir- cumstance from the WHS band, Father Hug presented the invoca- tion. Rev. Reese was the Bac- calaureate speaker. He was fol- lowed by a senior ensemble singing Silver Wings. Chosen to speak by their classmates were Lynette Boyers and Tom Glanz. They each expressed their feelings about the Class of 1983. After the awarding of the diplomas, class president Arnoldo Hernandez led the class in the turning of the tassels and then gave an enlightening speech. The class donated an amplifier to be used in the gym as their class gift. The program closed with the sing- ing of the Alma Mater and, then the benediction was given by Father Hug. After the Commencement exer- cises, a few of the graduates took time to go to the cemetery to honor a former classmate, Buffy Ross. A memorial was placed on her grave from the Class of 1983. 36 Bottom right: Kent leaves a year early! Bottom left: Thanks Mrs. Barber! The tradition of outstanding bands was again continued this year at WHS. The marching season started in June with the Fireman ' s Parade and the Freshmen ' s first public ap- pearance. On August 15 over 100 band members left Wauseon with apprehensive feelings about the long week ahead. One of the highlights of Band Camp hap- pened at 5:00 Wednesday morn- ing, when the Freshmen were awakened from their deep sleep to take part in this year ' s initiation. At the annual closing bonfire, tears appeared in many Seniors ' eyes as they realized how much band meant to them and that it would soon be over. As the band marched across the field at the first football game, everyone realized that all the hard work at Band Camp had paid off. As the season went on, the band con- tinued to dazzle the audiences with their spectacular shows, and in return received many standing ovations. Everyone from the ma- jorettes and drill team to Kevin and the musicmakers themselves contributed to the great success of the 1982 Marching Indians, but we couldn ' t have done it without Mr. George, who was always reminding us to get our knees up and point our toes. Dur- ing this event, students are able to display their talents in several dif- ferent areas, either art, industrial arts, home economics, or music. During the first part of the festival, the year ' s projects were the center of attention. Rod Cheney was given the honor of be- ing the year ' s Industrial Art Stu- dent of the Year, and Tom Day was recognized as Art Student of the Year. The attention was turned toward the musical talents during the second portion of the festival. During this portion the bands and choirs presented an outstanding performance. Fritz Whitcomb was presented the Na- tional Choral Award, Kevin Ladd and Mary Jo Rossman were honored with the Arion Award, and the John Philip Sousa Award was presented to Dave Garbers. This evening proved what a fine art and music department our school has and all of the students who participated should be con- gratulated for a job well done! Playoff picture slips by Tribe for second straight year. 66 Who wants a touchdown? — We want a touchdown!! was often sounded across Harmon Field. The 1982 Varsity Football team responded to the spirited voices of the crowd by scoring point after point on their way to an awesome 8-1-1 record. Despite the frigid temperatures, the tremendous support of the student body and townspeople lifted the team ' s spirit to an ultimate high as they tackled victim after victim. Under the fine Senior direction of Larry, Tony, Tom, and Jerry, the varsity Tribe tallied up many points to become one of the best offensive teams WHS has seen in several years. Although the team was small, quick, and few in numbers, many players made all-league honors and Larry Fruth and Jerry Richer made all-district and all- state teams. MVP Lyndon Nofziger and MIP Rick Metzger of the reserve team will surely aid in the future of an outstanding varsity team. With a deceiving record of 3-3, the reserve team shows promise for the future of WHS football. Below: WE ARE ff ONE. They finished their season with the best overall record in Wauseon history, setting up 20 wins to only 6 losses. Led by all- leaguers Jill Moden, Jamie Knox, and Shelly Ricker, and honorable mention Dawn Leupp and Joni Warncke, the team finished sec- ond in the league with a 6-2 record. The Indian spikers captured the Sectional Championship for the second consecutive year, advanc- ing them to District competition where they fought their way to an impressive second place finish. Their successful season was due to the hard work and dedication of the whole team, under the in- fluence of MVP ' s Jill Moden and Jamie Knox, and MIP ' s Diana Bogosian and Kellie Norris. Hustle! Starting out with four sophomores and eight freshmen, the team bumped their way through the schedule losing only two league games. After only a few games, Kellie Norris was graduated to the varsi- ty team. This left a spot to be filled by a freshman, and Jacque Shadle showed how qualified she was with an awesome first year spike. Shari Fruth, Rena Clausen, and Michelle Huber led the team holding the sophomore starting positions, followed by freshmen Lori Creager, Jacque Shadle, and Selina Day. With her height, Chris Cole found a place in the front row as a blocker with Rita McQuillen blocking and passing at her side. Andrea Crew substituted into the back row as a dependable server and passer. Debbie Rupp and Chrystel Blosser were the back-up setters. 74 Top Left: But Coach, it was Michelle ' s set. With team unity and great leadership on their side, the Indians pulled second place in both the league and sec- tional tournaments and also third place in the districts. Another of the highlights of the season was Coach Schneider ' s 100th win, a credit to his leadership ability. During the year, certain team members showed their leadership abilities and were established at the top of the squad. Among these were: team captain, MVP, and four-year award winner Tony Schneider; state qualifiers Chris Menchaca, Allan Lane, and Dave Day (who placed fifth in the 119 lb. weight class); the up- perclassmen including MIP ' s Allan Lane and Troy Weber; and the Gut Award winners Larry Fruth and Tony Schneider. 90 Top right: Well, I think this match will be a cake walk. — Mr. Schneider. They pushed themselves to the best of their ability with many of them eager to pin a spot on next year ' s varsity team. Some outstanding performances were given by MVP Brian Banister, and MIP ' s Mike Willis and Wes Precht. BOW AND ARROW . . . NOW SQUEEZ IT This Was Just My First Year. — Dave Rohrs 93 . . . GYMNASTICS ' 82- ' 83 Cindy . . . Frame By Frame . The Wauseon gymnastics team had a very successful season. The team was young this year. Five out of the eleven team members were freshmen. With experienced senior leaders Cindy Drummer, Julie Matheaus, and Sandy Frankfor- ther, they led the determined team through a vigorous and com- petitive winter season. The graceful girls finished third in a triangular meet at Columbus Grove. The gymnastics team ac- complished a number of goals and had a lot of good times doing it. The team is looking forward to the young, experienced members for their hard work and dedication to produce another excellent season. SWIMMING 82-83 The Indian swimmers splashed in- to their rewarding season, but not without a lot of long hours looking at the black lines on the bottom of the pool. Early mornings and team spirit helped the team to shatter many of the school records. New school record holders included: Jill Neuenschwander, Kelly Fritz, Dara Stutzman, Mike Head, Emily Hurst, Gregg Zimmerman, Brett Pelok, and Steve Nowicki. Because of key finishes from everyone on the team, the girls tied a strong Findlay team and then went on to place 4th in the Findlay Invita- tional. Wauseon boys had several fine performances individually and also placed 4th in Findlay. Although injuries plaqued the team and a few of the members didn ' t last the season, the team finished well in Districts. Times improved greatly throughout the season. The girls finished 6th out of 31 teams; the boys finished 14th out of 26 — the best results in WHS history. Award winners for the 82-83 season were as follows: Capt. Steve Nowicki, Emily Hurst; MVP Gregg Zimmerman, Dara Stutzman; MIP Sue Murry, Gregg Zimmerman: Gut Award Emily Hurst. The young team will be see- ing lots of wave action in the com- ing years at WHS. 95 Right: Yes David, we see that hand! Up, Up, and Over . . . 96 The boys ' varsity track team, led by field MVP Jerry Richer and runner MVPs Dave Rohrs and Mike Head, finished a fine season. Although Mother Nature put a damper on the track season and forced the cancellation of three meets, many individuals managed to improve their previous times. The team did exceptionally well at the Findlay Relays and won the meet. Two teammates brought home special honors. Jerry Richer won Outstanding Field Event Per- former and Mike Head won Outstanding Running Performer. It was quite an honor for both awards to go to people on the same team. With runner MIP Kevin Hite and field MIP Tim Yackee and many experienced, young tracksters, the team is looking for- ward to a super year next spring. The boys ' team was also proud to be able to send Jerry Richer down to Columbus to compete in the State Track Meet. He placed third in discus. Jerry has shown great success in both the shot-put and discus. Congratulations Jerry! JERRY RICHER ... 3rd AT COLUMBUS 1983 . . . Crowed Buses, Crowed Track, Long Meets 97 GOLD MEDAL YEAR — 1983 Lady Thinclads Triumph at O.G. The 1983 girls ' varsity track team started out their season on the wrong foot. They lost their first dual meet on a very cold and rainy afternoon to the Napoleon girls. Despite the unfavorable condi- tions Julie Matheaus broke the record in the high jump and Rob- bin Vasvery broke the record in the hurdles. But once they got started, the WHS track fans saw excellent things start to happen. Led by seven seniors, field MVP Dawn Leupp, distance MVP Marlene Dieringer, sprint MVP Kelly Stites, and MIP Rena Clausen, the varsity girls finished a 3-2 dual meet season. The team won the Ottawa-Glandorf Gold Metal Meet out of 17 teams and tied for first with Springfield at a very exciting Whitmer Invitational Relays. They placed seventh out of 22 teams at the Blade Relays. The WHS thinclads broke five records this year and sent seven girls to regionals. It was a super year for the tracksters and they performed well in this year ' s new uniforms. The girls ' track team would like to wish Mrs. Funk farewell because it is her last year to be assistant coach. The track team will miss her! 98 Top left: The little Free puts the Streak in the dust. They fell just short of the Sectional title as Paulding came out ahead in the last few minutes with a 4-3 score. Outstanding individuals for the team were MIP ' s Hal Cassidy and Kevin Schloneger, MVP Tom Glanz, and MVP and Batting Award winner Jack Warncke. They will lose only two seniors, so with many returning, it looks like they will again be a contender next year. RESERVE BASEBALL This year ' s reserve baseballers were always trying to do their best even though their final record was not indictative of this. Up against the inexperience of a freshmen majority and adverse weather con- ditions, the JV baseballers never gave up. Special awards winners for the team were Batting Award Winner and MVP Troy Darcy and MIP Dave Metzger. Next year ' s outlook is hopeful now that they have a year ' s experience under their hat! 101 RAH! RAH! Spirits were raised as W.H.S. supporters showed pride in red and white co lors. 102 The spirited cheerleaders did another super job this year. They worked hard in preparing for Cheerleading camp. While there, they acquired a plaque for 4th place overall. (There were 13 squads who attended the camp.) They also received a special ribbon for their dance routine. Kristen Spengler was outstanding by receiving a plaque for being in the top ten of the most spirited girls at camp. The cheerleaders also learn- ed about 20 new chants and 8 new floor cheers to psych up the students at WHS. They kept busy running the cake raffles at the home basketball games and selling I love the Indians bumper stickers. All the WHS cheerleaders joined forces to sponsor spirit week in October. During that week, each day was designated as to what the student body should wear. Among the favorites were Clash Day, Grub Day, and the traditional Red and White Day. The cheerleaders did an excellent job of decorating the lockers of both the football and basketball teams and making inspirational hall signs. Once again this year the cheerleaders did a wonderful job of leading the school spirit. Yea team!! Below: Hey. our dates |ust pulled up! The memories of the skits Rice pudding, take seven! and Doctor, doctor please come quick, my darling daughter and dog are sick! will linger in the spirits of the WHS students for years to come. The pep band also did a wonderful job to boost the spirits of the Indian supporters by playing The Horse and Across the Field. The pep assemblies this year were very entertaining and colorful and each one uplifted the WHS students for the big game that evening. Top: Follow the yellow brick road. Just the other day we were the dumb little freshmen. We didn ' t know where the classrooms were and wandered around like we were lost. It was hard fitting in and making new friends. Somehow, we made it and became sophomores. We thought we were hot stuff when that driver ' s license was put in our hands and we got a set of keys to the family car. Finally as Juniors, we started taking hold of our potential. It wasn ' t just a building, but a place to experience life to the fullest. Our teachers are really our friends and they give us more than knowledge; they give us an outlook that is unique. As Seniors, we took the initiative and became leaders. This year has been a success thanks to every talented senior. We ' re going to miss you, WHS, but it ' s time to move on. Senior Class Officers: Front, L-R: M. Friedhoff, T. Fraker. Back: C. We had fund-raisers like the Jr. Talent Show, the Jr. Basketball Night, and the coat check at the basketball games. All this was to make the dream of the Jr.-Sr. Prom come true. We use to play foot- ball, basketball, baseball, and go bowling together. We had a lot of classes together this year and we had a great time in all of them. — D. Sperry Burt and I had been good friends since the summer before fifth grade. I remember we would get some of our friends and go throw snowballs at cars. We all used to have great fun. — P. Fraley I ' ll never forget the time we took Burt up to our cabin in Canada and he caught his first fish — 27 , 5 3 lbs. When he reeled that thing in and I netted it, his facial expression was worth a million dollars. — B. Pelok Robb taught me the very first song that he had ever learned on his guitar. He never showed anyone else. — B. Frank Robb was quite a comedian. He always made my friends and I laugh whether we wanted to or not. He was quite a guy. — D. Rashley Our band, even though we weren ' y great, was Robb ' s favorite thing. When we would jam on Saturdays, I would get tired and stop, but he always wanted to keep going. That ' s the kind of guy he was: when he wanted something, he strived for it. — S. Tanner Who knows the pain and agony, Who knows of their despair, Who understands this suffering, These parents now must bear. We cannot know their sorrow, Without tasting of their cup; We cannot know their tragic loss, Lest we should drink it up. Precious Teenage Boy There is Someone Who understands, Someone Who ' s lost a son, Someone Whos ' s watched in anguish, As His life on earth was done. God understands each beating heart, Each breath, each step we take; He knows each troubled soul and mind, Each agonizing ache. Because He gave His only son, On Calvary ' s cruel tree, Through life comes death, through death is life, Yes life! Eternally. We ' ll cry because we ' ll miss him; We ' ll wish that he was here. Our eyes will mist with memories That linger through the years. Our tears be more for us than him, For he knows peace and joy. There were many new experiences for us, including learning to respect the outstanding Senior class, building our first float, coping with homework, our first taste of study halls, and the opportunity to join different clubs and organizations. It ' s not meant to look back at what we seniors were or even are now in high school, but to look at what we will be in the future as we begin to separate and travel our individual paths, which will lead us to our eventual goals. While still in high school, we have many different ideas of what we will or would like to become and do with our lives. This section ' s main purpose is to show what our goals were while we were still seniors. Within the next few years, most of us will probably change our minds many times but there will be those who stuck with their are well headed present choice and follow towards our , ifeti h ntll ' tl T sf 11 ' Mfe occupations, we will be achieved. In ten years, M able to look back and when most of us see how wel , we knew where we were going when we chose our Senior Occupations. Medicine: Front Row, L-R: L. Cady. D. Double. B. Lillich, A.
