i ff ff .121 I 5. iix,'laA,ix iff 'ie' 5, DIA This word sends a thrill up the spine of every real American recalling the color, romance, and adventure of our original natives. Roamers of the forests and fighters of the plains were the redmen. On the very spot where our city of Wausau now stands, an Indian village once prospered. They paddled their canoes and fished peacefully on the river. In the fall they would gather on the lake and harvest the wild rice for the winter. The Norway and Wfhite Pine forests that edged the river were filled with game. This peaceful scene became shattered, however. when lumbermen discovered the possibilities of the .xY4'1 locality, and set up a logging camp. The camp grew to be a small village, and as the Indians moved on to wilder places, the city of Waiisati was being born. Now, little is left of the lore of the redmen. The Indians, on the whole, are different from their ances- tors, and few have retained the customs and crafts of their fore-fathers. Seeing the Indian thus fade out of the picture, we felt that we should bring him back for a fleeting instant.
