Speech The 1942 forensics sea- son further established the Wausau record as one of the outstanding speech squads in the Wisconsin River Valley. At the W. R. V. meet, which was held at Antigo, March 23, the Wausau forensics squad won highest individual team honors by capturing three firsts and two sec- onds. Iames Abegglen, Rosemary Zirbel and Betty Wolman represented Wau- sau at the district meet at Wisconsin Rapids, March 26. SPEECH WINNERS Row 2---Genrich, Wolman, Freeman, I-leinrichs, Delaney, Abegglan, Zirbel. Row le Lenz, Mr, Marquardt, Miss D. Anderson, Miss Elstrom, Miss Pedersen, Miss Thomas. The above activities are coached as follows: Oratorical and extemporaneous speak- ing-Mr. E. C. Marquardty extemporaneous reading and serious and humorous declamation mMiss Thomas, Miss Elstrom, Miss D. Anderson, Miss Pedersen and Miss Wiese. Externporaneous Reading Oratory Humorous Declamation Dramatic Declamation Betty Wolman Rosemary Zirbel Dorothy Heinrichs Io-Io Ruder Virginia Genrich Ioe Freeman Bill Lenz lack Delaney IANE LEWIS Extemporaneous Speaking Iames Abegglen Speech ln the American Legion original oratorical contest, Wausau maintained its record as the outstanding school in Wisconsin. In this field of competition, lane Lewis won the unanimous de- cision of the judges in the regional meet held at Marshfield, March l3. This makes the fourth time that a Wausau orator has been in the top rank in the regional contest and the third time a W.H.S. orator has participated in the state legion finals. The Wausau high school remains the only school in Wisconsin that has ever entered a national finals. IO Radio Club The Radio Club, one ot the youngest in the school, is comprised oi twelve boys interested in amateur radio. One ot the purposes ot the club is to teach the meni- bers the theory ot radio and the Inter- national Morse code, so that they may pass the Federal Communications exams tor their amateur licenses. ln an ettort to bolster national morale, a program ot Trainee Message handling was success- fully carried out. Two amateur stations, WQIIB, with Merritt Olson, operator, and WQSMP, with George Weible as operator, handled over 250 messages tor the stu- dents and teachers, to their friends in the various army camps throughout the na- tion, including all United States posses- sions and posts. Since the war, however, all communications have been prohibited. At the present time, club members are studying the Morse code, theory, and working out some very interesting experi- ments on high voltages in vacuums. Row 3-Klostermann, Will, Baker, Swanson, Kass, Kane. Row 2-Grcibel, Rudell, Glirnrn, Dernbach, Plantiko, I. Schubring, Mr. Burton. How l--G. Sohubring, Nimz, Pruess, Beasa, Burson, lohnson, Pepper. Passow, Glasbrenner, Bugbee, Olson, Finken, lehn. Conservation Club l think that I shall never see A poem as lovely as a tree. To the Conservation Club should go the deepest commendation from all lovers ot nature tor the splendid service they performed last summer-that of helping to plant over 27,000 trees in newer parks of Wausau. The club has obtained a piece of land three miles south ot Rilo Mountain from the county on a 99 year lease. This spring in the month ot May, while the rest ot us will be autographing Wahis- cans and taking those horrible tinal exams, all the club members will be busily planting about 25,000 trees and anxiously await- ing summer when they contem- plate on building a Conservation Club cottage on their land. Con- servation is not conversation to them. They do it! Senior Gregg Club At any of the Wausau High High School basketball games, which are most exciting, the Senior Gregg can always be seen, sell- ing their delicious ice cream bars to a happy but exhausted crowd of spectators. This is the club's way of raising money. Girls who have sold ice cream bars are feted at a large banquet given at the end of the year. The club members who are in their second year of shorthand or bookkeeping, attend many delightful luncheons, at which a prominent speaker on business affairs speaks to the girls. They proved to be an alert eleven, whom spectators pointed to with pride, and oppon- ents, with respect. The season was opened with only a few lettermen on the l94U cham- pionship football team as a nucleus, but Coach Brockmeyer molded out a title-winning combination, in spite of the strong and clever gridiron competition. The team, in general, was quite green, and lacked the polish of ptr vious teams. They were a willing lot, however, and their desire :pit hard work, will to win, ability to al sorb coaching, and expert executip: of blocking and tackling funds- rnentals, made them the undefeated champs. The squad started slowly, gaining momentum as the season progressed, so that its ways surprised the coach and supporters as it brushed aside seven foes. This year the work of the Student Council centered about two main projects. The first semester the council conducted the customary, annual Doughnut Drive, which went over the top. A highly successful Book Drive for our boys camp and at the fronts, with net returns of over 4000 books was the highlight of the second semesters business. Every year, besides the regular services performed by the five commissioners whom the student body chooses tc head vitally important committees, the council sponsors four all-school parties: the Doughnut dance, the Turnabout, football hops, and the senior class picnic. To make these events more enioyabie and picturesque the decorations committees dressed these occasions in bright attirep the first football hop was represented by an autumn scene, moon and all, the crowning of the Doughnut Duke and Duchess took place aboard the good ship, U. S. Doughnut, and the Turnabout Dance featured our comic favorites L'ii Abner and Daisy Mae. ll2 The United States at war faces the problem of preserving our American democracy. As a people we recognize that the foundations ot our democracy are the youth at America and how they develop into the citizens ot tomorrow. Stu- dent government has become a distinctive practice at W.H.S. and we retain as sacred this original habit of managing our business. Today we practice selfgovern i ent in preparing for victory and for continuing the American wav t life to follow the victory hXPCUTIVE COMMITTEE Ruth David Pres Second Semester Charles Sippl Commissioner of Frnan Elatn Radu Commissioner of School Affairs Launie Zieb ll Comml sloner of Publi ity Geraldine Skinner Secretary Second Sernest r Ruth Dvorak S cr ta y F1rst S mester Mario Manecke Commissioner of Social Activities lane Lewis Pres First Semester and Stanley Stool s Vic Presldent First Semester ww r absent when the pictures were taken I , X A C H , T ' ' ll?
