Let us cite a few examples. IN THE FALL OF 1911 There were twenty teachers including Mr. Painter, who taught civics the first semes- ter and U. S. history the second. MR. HIRSCH To the Students of the Wausau High School Dear Boys and Girls: The dollar is not the sole yardstick by which true success should be measured. A life animated by high ideals, guided by practical common sense, and devoted to service, exerts far more permanent influence for good than one which is interested only in the accumulation of material wealth. Economic independence, however, is very desirable. This can only be realized, under the fiercely competitive conditions of today, when the individual is properly prepared to do the work for which he is best fitted This is an age of specialization. Choose your life work as early as you can then prepare yourself to efficiently carry on this work. Let nothing dis- courage you from securing adequate preparation. Preparation, persistence, and service are the foundations upon which true success rests. I Sincerely yours, EVERETT C. l-llRSCH Superintendent of Schools Page 9
