 THE SCHOOL It looks like any building When you pass it on the street, Made of stone and glass and marble, Made of iron and concrete. But once inside you can ride A camel or a train. Visit Rome, Siam, or Nome, Feel a hurricane, Meet a king, learn to sing, How to bake a pie, Go to sea, plant a tree. Find how airplanes fly, Train a horse, and of course Have all the dogs you’d like, See the moon, a sandy dune. Or catch a whopping pike. Everything that books can bring You’ll find inside those walls. A world is there for you to share When adventure calls. You cannot tell its magic By the way the building looks, But there’s wonderment within it, The wonderment of books. THE HISTORY OF WAUSA PUBLIC SCHOOL In 1877, the first school district was organized and the first school house was built. The total enrollment was 12. As years went by a larger school was necessary, so in 1890 a four- room frame building was built. In 1895, one year of high school study was added to the curriculum. In 1898, it became a two-year high school. In 1907, the third year was added, and in 1914, the fourth year was added. The first 4-year high school graduation class was in 1915. The present brick school house was built in 1913, which included all grades through high school. In 1960, the grade school rooms were completed making adequate room for the redistricting program. Then in 1964. there was an addition to the school which included a shop, li- brary, home economics, administra- tion offices, and science rooms. A new gymnasium and locker rooms completed the present school in 1975 and was dedicated as the W.H. Johnson Gymnasium upon his re- tirement in 1980. Wausa High School has always been a fully accredited school. The num- ber of Alumni that have graduated from Wausa High School in 1855.
