But once inside you can ride A camel or a train. Visit Rome, Siam, or Nome, Feel a hurricane, Meet a king, learn to sing, How to bake a pie, Go to sea, plant a tree. Find how airplanes fly, Train a horse, and of course Have all the dogs you’d like, See the moon, a sandy dune. Or catch a whopping pike. Everything that books can bring You’ll find inside those walls. A world is there for you to share When adventure calls. You cannot tell its magic By the way the building looks, But there’s wonderment within it, The wonderment of books. THE HISTORY OF WAUSA PUBLIC SCHOOL In 1877, the first school district was organized and the first school house was built. The total enrollment was 12. As years went by a larger school was necessary, so in 1890 a four- room frame building was built. In 1895, one year of high school study was added to the curriculum. In 1898, it became a two-year high school. In 1907, the third year was added, and in 1914, the fourth year was added. The first 4-year high school graduation class was in 1915. The present brick school house was built in 1913, which included all grades through high school. In 1960, the grade school rooms were completed making adequate room for the redistricting program. Then in 1964. there was an addition to the school which included a shop, li- brary, home economics, administra- tion offices, and science rooms. A new gymnasium and locker rooms completed the present school in 1975 and was dedicated as the W.H. Johnson Gymnasium upon his re- tirement in 1980. Wausa High School has always been a fully accredited school. The num- ber of Alumni that have graduated from Wausa High School in 1855. ANNUAL STAFF m, Ir: Karen Kddie. adviser. Julie Youiik. The Vikings had a very successful basketball season as they finished with a season record of 17 wins and only 5 defeats. The Vikings won championships in the Wausa Invita- tional Tourney, the Knox County Tourney, and the Lewis and Clark Conference Tourney. This was the first time in the schools history that they had won all three champion- ships, “Great Job Vikings”! The Vi- kings placed Ken Claussen and Lance Lundberg on the All-Confer- ence Team and Mike Thorell re- ceived Honorable Mention Honors. Ken Claussen was also named to the Norfolk Daily News Top 20 Basket- ball Team. Ken was also named to the Omaha and Lincoln All-State Teams. Ken Claussen closed his ca- reer with 1302 pts. Leadership was provided by Ken, Darren, Todd, Mark, Mike, Bob, and Jim. GIRLS BASKETBALL Front row: 1-r, Kendra Tucker, Carrie Lundberg, Amy Creutz, Colette Anderson, Nicolle Wylie, Regina Throener. Back row, Coach Greg Conn, Jon Baue, Chris Seagren, Bob Hoppe Jim Sanders, Brian Sanders, and Gerry Hoppe. The 1988 boys track team turned in a very fine performance this year. Wausa won two first place trophies and two runner up trophies. This was twice the number of medals won over last season. Three records were broken this season: the shot put, 1600m relay, and the 3200m relay. Lance Lundberg threw the shot 52’ V’ to wipe out a 20 year old record which was 51’ 11 V-T . The 1600m relay of Todd We- ber, Darren Vanness, Ken Calussen, and Mike Thorell set a new mark in that event with a time of 3:32.6, erasing the old mark of 3:34.5. The 3200m relay Jim Sanders, Mike Thorell, Todd Weber, and Darren Vanness, set a new mark of 8:29.1, erasing the old record of 8:33.0. The greatest trophy of the year won by these young men was when they won the District Meet. Wausa had not won a district since 1977. Wausa qualified seven young men to the State Track Meet. GIRLS TRACK Girls track members were from 1-r: Toni Cunningham, Kendra Tucker. Nicolle Wylie, and Coach Dave Green. At the start of the season Kendra had a knee injury and was out for the rest of the season. This left only two girls on the team, which was a big disappointment. Toni usually placed third or fourth in the shot put, and Nicolle usually placed third or fourth in the discus. Track basically is more of an individual sport which takes individual discipline and effort. I would like to thank these three girls for their perseverance and hard work. Coach Green JR. A bare stage becomes the setting for murder, as twelve jurors gather to decide the fate of a lovely young girl. Did she stab her uncle in cold blood? Elev- en jurors say yes. One, a student actress, says no. Finally, impatiently, they agree. Furniture is re-arranged, props are brought in, including the real murder weapon. The actress becomes the accused girl. The fore- man impersonates the murdered man. Sev- eral jurors provide comedy as they try to adjust to being “actors. There’s plenty of physical action as the events leading up to the murder and the murder itself are brought to life onstage. But which version is correct? Play-acted murder threatens to become real murder. The verdict and the climax of the play arrive together in a sin- gle smashing finish. We did drive out of it by Norfolk. Our first stop was Happy Chef for a potty break. Then we stopped at Glenwood, Iowa for breakfast. Then we reached the wonderful limits of Kansas City. We stopped at the Regal 8 Motel to unload our stuff. Then off to the Green Mills Candy Factory. After smelling all that candy, we went to The Crown Center for shopping, food and fun. Later that night we ventured off to the Royals game, which they won 13-1. The next day we spent the whole day at Worlds Of Fun. We left at 5:30, but no one wanted to leave. We stopped at Bonanza in Coucil Bluffs and ate the worst meal ever. We reached Norfolk at 2:00 A.M. Our fun filled exciting trip had came to an end.
