E., not present Alan R. E., Baritone. music makes the world go ’round On March 30, 1979 at 7:00 A. M., WHS band left town on charter buses to visit our friends in the BHS band. We stopped in Le- Mars, Iowa for morning lunch and at Worthington, Minn. for dinner. When we arrived in Bricelyn we practiced our eleven numbers for the concert that evening. Follow- ing the concert the BHS band hosted a dance in the school gym for our band. We stayed over in the band members' homes that night. The next morning we left at 8:00 P.M. We spent Saturday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We visited the Children's Zoo and went shopping in the Empire Mall before dining at the First Edition, where we ate by candlelight and fireplaces. After taking in a mov- ie we started homeward, playing cards and discussing the good time had has. We all enjoyed the trip very much. homecoming 1978 . . . Our school had the following par- ticipants : Shelley Rosen and Daryl Frevert in informative public speaking; Kevin Lind in original public address; Jane Dittmer and Shauna Olson in oral interpretation of prose literature; Teresa Erickson and Kim Whaley in oral interpretation of poetry; and Bill Eldorado and Mike Bums in After dinner speaking. 17 the first day of the The Wausa High School Commencement Exercises were held in the High School Auditorium on Sunday, May 13, 1979. The Commencement address was given by Dr. M.L. Anderson of Wayne State College. The class was presented by Mr. Johnson and the diplomas were given to the Seniors by Dr. R.L. Tollefson. Scholarship awards and honors were presented by Mr. Wamberg with Mrs. Schmitz assisting. Jodi Moseman was chosen as valedic - torian, while Penny Suhr was chosen as salutatorian. All- Around Girl and Boy Awards were presented to Beth Wa- keley and Mike Bums respectively. The title of the play was 'Breaker Calling Cinderella', written by William Gleason. It was a two act comedy based on the fairy tale, Cinderella. The story dealt with the use of C.B. radios in Upshaw County, Texas. In this play the Silver Princess was Cinderella and the Cattle King was the handsome prince. The two met over the C.B. radio and were later married by the C.B. Godmother. The play was directed by Mr. Story with Shelly Rosen as the student director. 22 desperate ambrose This year's Senior Class play was called 'Desperate Ambrose' by Donald Payton. It was presented on March 27, 1979. The play is set in the 1880's in a frontier town, Dead Man's Gulch. Am- brose and Bert, two vaudville per- formers, are stranded there and are mistaken for frontier heros. They are able to save the town and some lady hotel owners from the clutches of a crooked sheriff and his gang. The costume wom by Audie Elsberry was originally his grandather's. It was made in the late 1890's. Audie also used an old family Bible. The play was directed by Mr. Lundberg. too much heaven The 1979 Senior Class of Wausa High was honored by the Junior Class on Friday evening, April 27, 1979, at the banquet and prom which was held at the City Auditorium. The theme, Too Much Heaven'' was carried out in pastel colors. Craig Mainquist served as toastmaster. Alan Erickson, Junior class president, gave the welcome and Penny Suhr, Senior class president, gave the re- sponse. Mr. Johnson gave the faculty response. Too Much Heaven'' was sung by Myrna C., John S., Donna P., Gary M., Julie M., and David B., accompanied by Miss Vondracek, Craig M., and Alan E. Darcy Seger gave the dinner prayer. The fol- lowing Sophomores served as waiters and waitresses: (L to R) Vem A., Christi B., Mike E., Val B., Roger K., Jackie S., Randy E., Barb O., Jeff F., Janet G., Steve K., and Joan G. Mr. Timm was the after dinner speaker. The class prophecy was read by Cathy F. and Doug N. Joy P., Darwin S., and Lora H. gave a skit. John S. concluded the program by singing ' 'We've Got To- night. '' The Prom followed the banquet with Patch'' providing the music. Faculty FACULTY academic art Miss Meyer is the academic art teacher. The purpose of this class is to inhance individual creativity. Drawing, painting, sculpturing, and designing are some of the pro- jects that the students partake in besides various other crafts. Miss Meyer teaches the students to use their abili- ties and imagination by stimulating their creativity. Miss Meyer also teaches the Special Education courses. industrial arts The purpose of the Industrial Art class is to prepare the students for vocational schools. It is for those who want to study engineering. Mr. Dittmer teaches this course. He teaches the students basic manipulative skills with various tools. The students work on engines, work with various woods, make model houses, besides a variety of other projects. The other classes Mr. Dittmer teaches are Auto Mechanics, Furniture Construction, Welding, Power Mechanics, Girls Shop (Crafts), Car- pentry, and Drafting-Architecture. 29 general business .ER POSITION EVALUATION The business education courses are taught by Miss Erick- son. The courses include Accounting, Typing, Advanced Typing, Office Practice, Shorthan, and Bookeeping. Each class is an aspect to introduce students into the busi- ness world. In the General Business course the students learn about advertising, balancing checkbooks, how to set up and balance each of their budgets, and a variety of other business interactions. The Accounting Class also focuses on federal income tax forms. home economics Miss Arent teaches Home Economics to 7-12 students. This class has many purposes. It prepares a person for better living in the changing world. The students leam how to handle various problems in life. The girls first matches were against Osmond when the A team lost 15-13, 15-13. The B and C teams recorded victories. The next matches were against Coleridge when the young Vikettes A team won 15-9, 15-1. The B team found going a little tougher as they lost. The final matches were against Osmond when the Vikettes recorded three wins. The A team won 15-3, 15-5, the 1 'B'' team won 15-11, 15-5, and the C team won 11-5, 11-5. A good way to complete a season for these promising young gals. In the Lewis G Clark Conference meet, Mike Bums set a record, 4:55.8 in the 1600 me- ter run, which broke the previous record of 5:00.6. Mike also broke his own record in the 3200 meter run, 10:52.9, by running a 10:44.2. Mike Erickson qualified for the state track meet in the pole vault at Dis- tricts by leaping a impressive 13' -3 . This also broke the previous school record of 12'-6'1. Out of twenty tracksters there were fourteen lettermen by the end of the season. The team finished first place at the Creighton Dual and the Freshmen-Sopho- more Future Stars Meet. They also re- ceived a second place trophy at the Lewis G Clark Conference meet. Both the boys and the girls came out on the short short end in a dual against Creighton but competed very well in the major meets. The boys placed second in the Cedar County Relays while the girls finished third in a field of six teams. At the Osmond Invitational the boys claimed the runner up trophy while the girls finished sixth in the eleven team meet. In the final meet of the year, the Know County, both the girls and the boys finished sec- ond. A few junior high records were rewritten this year. Scott Frevert set a new record in the pole vault, a 9' - 0 , Joel Hoyt tied the high jump record at 51 - 3'1, David Wamberg lowered the 1320 yard run to 3:53.2, David Olson extended the triple jump mark to 33' -4'', and the mile relay team of Fre- vert, Hoyt, Olson and Wamberg lowered the record to 4:22.5. For the girls, Kathryn Kumm lowered the 880 yard run record to 2:52, Jodene Finck ex- tended the discus record to 81' -5 , Jodi Gillilan set a new 440 yard run re- cord with a 67.9 and the shuttle hurdle relay team of Gillilan, Kumm, Wil- beck and Deb Johnson lowered that record to 1:08. The golfers shot a sea- son low of 347 at the Plain - view Invitational. The highlight of the season was winning the first place tro- phy at the Wausa Invita- tional Golf Meet. In this meet the following people took medalist honors: Dan and Ned Blankenship and Robert Koehler. The Viking team also set a school record of 171 strokes for nine holes.
