Reverend Olin Belt addressed the members of the gradua- ting class of 1976. Commencement Exercises for the Wausa High School Seniors were held on Wednesday evening, May 12. There were thirty-seven Seniors in the Class of '76. The Commencement address was given by Dr. William Anderson, Superintendent of the Sioux City Public Schools. Valedictorian of the class was Laddy Carlson, salutatorian was Dave Enquist. Four year honor students were Cindy Wrick, Ron Carlson, Connie Prather, Gail Barnes, Bob Mittan, Pa- trice Elsberry, Robert Carlson, Carlene Lind, Denise Munter, Kathy Wachter, and Jill Wakeley. Seniors who received scholarships and awards were: Laddy C., Dave E., Ron C., Patrice E., Judy D., Tom C., Gail B., Connie P., Kim J., Bob M., Stan W., and Cindy W. The All-Around Girl award was presented to Nancy K. and the All-Around Boy award was presented to Robert C. Class Prophecy May 12, 1996 Can it be twenty years since the class of '76 graduated from W.H.S? Well, it must be time to return to Wausa and see what the '76'ers are up to. As I cruised into town, 1 spotted what used to be the Bowling Alley, now boasting a sign saying 'Kathy's Enter- tainment Emporium.1 I was in the mood for some entertaining and 1 had an idea that 1 might find some old friends there, so 1 dropped in. Sure enough, there was Kathy W. introducing the entertainment: Frank L. and Gene L. Sit- ting at the counter were Doyle F., Dave S., and Roger C., in town to kick up their heels after a hard day's work on the farm. After leaving Kathy's, I met Dave E. and Tom C. on the steps of the bank, discussing atomic livestock feed- ing. Kyle N. drove by in his Peterbilt and gave us a friendly honk. Stepping into the bank, I saw many familiar faces. Judy D., Nancy K., and Cindy W. were behind the coun- ter, sorting checks and balancing the books. In his plush office, Ron C. was conducting a business transaction over the phone. When I stepped in to chat, he said he had Bob M. on hold. He was trying to arrange an advertising agreement with him for Paul B. 's and Stan W. 's construction company. Back on main street again, I noticed two familiar business places: Peters Hardware now run by Murray P., and Johnson's Place, Kim J.'s establishment. Although I didn't have time to stop in and see, I hoped that business was good. Having incurred a severe hang nail on my toe, I decided to go down to the doctor's office. As I limped past, I was nearly run over by Tim A., who was backing out a car of a mechanics shop. Inside the building 1 noticed Will S. and Marty M. working on Bill T.'s 40 20 tractor. Finally reaching the medical clinic, Sharlene T. caught me as 1 fainted in pain. Gail B. dragged me into an examination room where Denise M., LPN, sterilized my toe. Patrice E. with the help of Connie P. and a smJl toe nail clippers performed minor surgery. On my way out, Laddy C., who had set up a take-out prescription center, prescribed a mild pain killer. Feeling much relieved, I sprinted up to the school house on the hill and noticed the old middle section had been condemned and tom down. Ed R. and Brian B. were busy laying bricks for this and also for a new Special Ed. sec- tion, which was headed by Carlene L. 1 walked in and was greeted by Cheryl M., who is the new administrative assistant. Mary C. was the bookkeeper for the system. While I was walking down the hall, I ran into Jill W. who was visiting Robert C., the industrial arts teacher, during parent-teacher conferences about one of her sons. Leaving the building, 1 heard a plane fly over which had a sign on it reading 'John R. Commercial Airlines.' Rande R., one of the passengers, was flying off to his next assignment in the Army. 1 was glad to learn that all the members of '76 had succeeded so well in their life goals. 16 To Whom It May Concern We, the Seniors of 1976, being of questionable minds, unsound bodies, and biased opinions do hereby submit the following wills before our days come to an end in Wausa High School: Tim Ray Albrecht—I will my locker, IB, to Duane Carlson. The scoreboard on page 72 reveals the crush- ing details--five conference victories, no defeats, only three touchdowns by opposing ball clubs. In addition, Coach Dittmer's squad downed Niobrara and Bloomfield in non-conference action. Losses were at the hands of tough Hart- ington Cedar Catholic and Laurel. Coach Hageman's reserves played a five game schedule and were victorious in three of their contests. Running back Curt Seagren led Viking ground gainers with 462 total yards on 98 carries. Laddy Carlson and Kim John- son both logged over 200 yards from scrimmage. At quar- terback Kim J. completed 49 passes for 738 yards and six touchdowns. Top pass receivers were Gary Skalberg, 27 receptions and 471 yards, and Roger Claussen, 27 recep- tions good for 369 yards. Dave Enquist led defensive stat- istics with most tackles; Roger C. was runnerup in that category. Wausa was well represented on this year's all- conference team, with Kim J., David E. , Gary S. and Paul Bloomquist filling spots on the offensive squad, while Roger C., Curt S. , and Brian Blair were named to the defensive unit. Norfolk and Omaha sportswriters also honored Kim, Roger and Gary for their accomplishments. Seniors were disappointed in that the Class C playoffs in November deprived them of their chance to participate in the conference playoff. 61 Gail B. and Nancy K. were selected as members of the All- Conference team. Gail B. made the first team and Nancy K. made the second. Congratulations to these girls for this noted achievement. Wausa Volleyballers After getting off to a slow start, the volleyballers finally got it together, ending their season with a Knox County Championship and Croft on Tourna- ment Championship to their credit. They placed second in the C-5 District which was held in Bloomfield. This year's team was coached by Mary Hansen and Charlotte Lane. Student managers were Pa- trice E. and Cheryl W. Since the gym was not yet completed, practices and games were held in the City Auditorium. Those girls receiving letters at the Athletic Ban- quet were Gail B., Nancy K., Carlene L., Con- nie P., Sharlene T., Pam B., Jane G., Shari J., Sandy K. , Julie N., Terri R., Tammi C., and Lisa M. 65 Basketball The Vikes may have won ten games while sustaining eleven losses, but game scores and won-loss date give only a partial accounting of the season. The team main- tained a good level of scoring throughout their schedule (as in a 75-74 overtime loss against Verdigre); they man- aged victories over such traditional rivals as Coleridge and Hartington; and in Class C District play they reached the final round before being downed by Laurel. For the basketball reserves a 42-29 win over Verdigre closed out a satisfying nine and four season. Two Viking regulars, Kim Johnson and Roger Claussen, gained all-conference recognition this season. Kim J., Roger C., Bruce F., Kevin L., Curt S., Gary S., Roger W., Meril F., Steve H., and Dan O. were basketball letter winners. 66 67 Girls Basketball This year was the first year for girls basketball in Wausa, and seventeen girls decided to give it a try. Betty B., Susie B., Jane G. , and Linda S.; Freshmen—Terri C., Kim D. Stacy H., Paggy K., and Kristine K. Nine girls received Letter Honors at the Athletic Banquet on April 20. Those receiving letters were Gail B., Nancy K., Pam B. , Jane G. , Sandy K., Tammi C., Deb F., Lisa M., and Linda S. 69 Tracksters have a good year! This year's track team had a very successful campaign, winning six of their nine meets. Mr. Dittmer coached the team and Mr. Rorvik assisted. Kyle N. and Gary S. were student managers. The guys worked hard and came home with the Knox County and Conference Championships to their credit. Six school records were bettered during the season.
